We bought our 76 Westy about 5 months ago. It was in great shape but I made a list of some things I wasn't comfortable doing myself and brought it in to a VW restoration shop. Everything that was worked on had a surprise along the way and we still don't have out Bus back. Working on these often opens up a Pandoras Box. In all fairness there are few places to get work done on these old classics in the Northeast so it's just the way it is. Watching this video was very therapeutic as it's now winter and I miss our Bus. Thanks for the ride.

Ein wunderbares Fahrzeug. Mein 1. Auto mit 18 war ein T2 B mit 66PS Flachmotor. Im Laufe der Jahre immer mal eine Pritsche und weitere Busse. Damals immer für recht kleines Geld und alles T2 B. Zufall, aber er soll das bessere Fahrwerk gehabt haben als der T2 A . Ich hätte soooo gerne wieder einen. Ein schöner Film, wirkt aber im Innenraum wie ein Käfer durch den Weitwinkel.

I hit 80mph in my 1977 2.0L FI, but really had to trash it. Changed to Rotella 15w40; much quieter/smoother, but maxes out at 75mph.

Neunzig ist den anstaendige geschwindigkeit.
Jede 10.000 km bestimmt oelwechsel wegen schnelle oelzersetzung durch hohe oel temperaturen. 1.6 liter motor haelt etwa 100.000 bis 150.000 km, danach ist den kompression im eimer. Design ist naemlich aus 1969. Gute farhrt!

Oh Gott ich weiß genau wie er sich fühlt mit dem Ding über die Autobahn zu fahren 😂 hatten mal einen t2 Westfalia und sind damit in den Spreewald gefahren. Sind dann ein kleines Stück über die Autobahn gefahren, was ziemlich heftig war da man immer schiss hatte das die Karre umkippt wenn ein LKW an einem vorbeifährt

What is your top speed and did you feel a noticeable difference in performance compared to the stock engine?
@@blas9520 I drove around 82mph on the 91 freeway in LA for a good clip. And yes, much peppier. Felt safer really. Regular servicing and tune ups are key.
@@lukedorny Damn thats fast for a vw bus. I just upgraded my stock 1600cc with dual carbs and exhaust. Kind of disappointed with performance (Although it runs great), only 52mph as a realistic cruising speed. Never tried the fully stock setup as i restored adding the upgrades and didnt run previously. Any advice for more top speed? (maybe gear ratios?)
@@blas9520 i completely redid the transmission and all new wheel bearings, etc., etc., and this all adds up to easier rolling. I definitely wouldn’t drive that fast all the time but you know Los Angeles. Sometimes that’s just keeping up!

I never tried topspeed, but over 100 kmh engine is so loud and vibrate lots. With full throttle engine will be overheating because bad cooling on old cars and quick broken
@@TESTDRIVEFREAK okay I can understand you there is model safari it's the name with double carburetor it can cruze on 140 kmh no problem still air cooling system and high rpm don't go well together

you shoudln't drive with lights on on these old cars, their alternators aren't built for this excessive use of electricity and it will eventually drain the battery. but other than that, lovely car :)
its mandatory turn on lights in switzerland (other country in europe as well).

@@FreFa-ch i just googled it, its says before 1970 is not mandatory, since 1. january 1970 must light on, so this vw bus is 1971
@@TESTDRIVEFREAK Okay i checked it, and you're right. There are several sources stating '74 (40 years or older in the year (2014) lights became mandatory) is the limit, but in the legal text it says 1970. However, I wouldn't turn them on nonetheless as it helps preserving the cars electrical system, which was by the way designed before 1970 ;). And 40 CHF really isn't alot. I've been driving without lights for the last 7 years and haven't had to pay a single fine :) And my actual cars are 1989 and 2003.
But yeah, im not critizising you, just telling you and others who read this comment that its not a good idea to use too much electricity in older cars :)

So they literally cannot travel 70 mph (113 kmph). I've always wondered if the person driving one of these was just scared to go over 60 mph (100 kmph). Now I know they just can't. And the fuel economy! 17 mpg (7 km/liter) I've never seen something so great!
You can travel 70 or 80 mph but you will hear high engine rpm and sounds like it wont hold or last long. Best travel speed is 50-60 mph
When you hit a hill in these busses I remember you have to downshift, and there is not a lot of power. Speed of 60 is what I remember was the max. Also, I remember mom had to replace the engine three times in 90,000 miles on her 1971 Bus because the valves would get sucked into the crankcase.
I remember mother was getting 22 MPG for fuel economy on her VW busses. At the time the fuel economy was unbeatable on a van.
