Like the additions to the workbench! Vice gives just enough opening to get a 2x4 in plus the dog holes and securing to the top! Nice! Yea, stop motion is tough and one of the reasons why I admire Frank Howarths' video work!

really wish you would have put this video out like 6 months ago when I bought mine and had no instructions lol. I got it up though, but now see where I went wrong. Thanks for the video on it.
Generally speaking, the tops of the wooden jaws would be installed slightly higher than the benches top & planed down to an exact match. This would result in a increased dog height as a result too. Generally, the top metal edge of the rear jaw would be mounted just a hair beneath the bench top edge. Once this is achieved, it is time to install the wooden jaws in whatever thickness one desires. In this instance drilling a 3/4" dog hole I would use approx. a 1.5" thick block of wood or thicker for the wall strength, however this is a light duty work vise, so I assume you will be OK. Looks like a nice functional setup, good job.

This is the vise I purchased to be my first, sturdy, inexpensive, uncomplicated, a good learning vise in my opinion. I will eventually get a larger own, but that is a ways down the road.

Great video! I have a question....I have the same kind of vice (but it's metal screw and the two other round metal things ... are way longer). I inherited it from my Dad, tried it once and now when I screwed it back in , it is crooked. Now it is kind of stuck and won't go in nor out really. Any ideas why it got crooked, and how I might tackle fixing it? THANKS. :)

That looks like the same vise I have on my bench, even the oak liners. All i need is the dogs lol. I notice that their made of plastic do you think that it will shorten there life span too much or is it not really anything to worry about?

Just saw your video and thought (to me) it would be a good idea to put a piece of wood as a backer on your movable jaw on the vice, just in-case you apply a little too much pressure to the work piece in the set-up between the dogs ... just a idea I would do to be safe or at least not have a piece come out ...

Nice Addition to your table. I have few questions. I noticed that there is a substantial gap between the affixed jaw and the table edge. Why didn't you chisel out the wood to make the jaw flush with the edge of the table so that the red oak is against the edge of the table? Also, the hole you drilled in the red oak for the movable jaw for the dog hole is quite big and it looks like there is maybe a 1/8 of an inch of wood on either side. Doesn't his make the wood very weak in this area? Does it have enough support when you tighten down on the vise? Are you going to add an additional piece of red oak to the back of the jaw to give it some more strength? Just wondering? Thanks for posting the build.
+Jean-Marc Labonte Thanks for watching and commenting first of all. The vise was a simple solution and easy to install. I just used the mounting holes on the vise to screw it to the table. This is my assembly table and the vise is only for a helping hand. The dog hole drilled in the oak board was done knowing that there wouldn't be much material left. So far I haven't had a problem. If I do in the future it's very easy to replace. The traditional style workbench I plan to build will have a more substantial and stable vise solution. Again, thanks for watching.

I think I'd drill holes for the dogs at each corner of my bench to allow me to hold table tops and other large pieces for planing or hold them off the bench for staining, etc.

So yeah it worked out pretty good! I used two vises, lined the center of each vise up with the two rows of dog holes running down my bench and used walnut as the vise jaws. You have to operated the handle's and the same time so it doesn't rack but it holds down the stock very well. Great for dovetailing/planning and whatever else I can think up im sure. Thanks for the inspiration and congrats on 10K subs! you deserve it.

I've used oak in a vice before and sometimes it stains the material but this was European Oak, not red oak which I presume is American, This only happens when their is moisture around it stains like ink but very difficult to sand out,

I used poplar as my jaw liners. Do you think that's strong enough or should I swap out for oak? And what type of mounting screws did you use?
Poplar would be fine. I would actually prefer a softer wood than oak so the liners wouldn’t mar my workpiece. I used simple deck screws to attach the vise to the table.

I should also ask: how thick is your wooden jaw on the moving piece where you drilled the dog hole? I have a 3/4" thick piece there now, and that's exactly the diameter of the Kreg dogs (which I also own). I thought about making a 1/2" wood dog out of an oak dowel just for the jaw, but I don't know if that will be strong enough...

you may want to add some support to the back of the dog hole in the vice as there is not alot of wood there. Nice vice i had a similar vice it was my grandfathers.

great video. I think thw only thing I would change is maybe for the stationary side of the vise use a thinner pice of wood as 2 3/4 pieces use a lot of vice opening space.

It seems like it would be really easy to blow out the face of that backplate. Looks like 1/8" of wood on either side of the dog.
