I feel the same way-so much so that I ended up writing a ridiculously long comment on this wonderful video about it, because it triggered my Kanej feelings.
To me, Inej is the heart and soul of the books and the TV series.
I need to see her with her family again. I need to see them cope with the fact that she was stolen and trafficked and exploited, that she’s not who she would have been if that hadn’t happened. Also where TF is her (non-book) brother???
Yes this is the only thing that bothers me SO MUCH about the Crows storyline in the entire series😡. I don’t know if the show runners thought s3x trafficking of minors was too “dark” but cutting out the horrible things of Inej’s backstory and only showing her dreaming of Kaz felt incredibly disrespectful. Maybe… in season 3 and with SOC spin-off they will finally do her character Justice 🤷🏾
All I can say and hope is that we get her backstory in the spin-off🤞🏼 because I feel alot of people easily overlooked that scene where Pekka sends the madman over to Inej; and in an interview where and Amita and Freddy reacted to it. Amita stated something that I was pleased to hear as she validated how that man got on top of her symbolised the trauma Inej had gone through at the menagerie and her past [s*xual abuse and human traff*cking]. I definitely want her backstory in the spin-off.
i kind of like it cause it feels like they're emphasizing how deep her trauma truly goes because she cant think about it without disappearing so all she can focus on is surviving and finding her brother but hopefully we do get to see more of her past soon 🙏🙏 i know amita's going to slay it
Amita Suman mentioned in an interview that deep diving Inej's backstory was cut due to time constraints, but they WOULD put them in S3/Six of Crows spinoff if they get the renewal. We NEED that renewal!

Kanej nation were literally crying, screaming, dying, throwing up, giggling, gasping and so much more this season! Freddy and Amita were amazing, the emotions on their face and the deep eye contact. They make me melt. They are the perfect Kaz and Inej.

4:13 “Was there no one to protect you?” This moment meant a lot to me. In this season, and perhaps throughout the general fandom, the focus is more often on Kaz’s traumatic history than on Inej’s.
It’s easy to assume that’s how Kaz feels, too. I’m not so sure. In the books, he doesn’t just think constantly about her but about keeping her free, protecting her from Tante Helen and being trafficked again.
For understandable reasons, it’s easier to illustrate and think about what Kaz endured as a kid-far more challenging to do so for Inej, the child who was enslaved, trafficked, and systematically exploited for years. What happened to Inej is more common. It’s happening to millions of girls and women, in particular, around the world, right now. (And global lockdowns made things worse, by triggering economic catastrophe and driving parents in developing countries to sell children, particularly girls, into slavery and forced marriages.)
But Kaz doesn’t forget, even when he’s hell bent on destroying Rollins. Kaz never stops trying to protect Inej, free her, and give her back her family, all while grappling with the understandable fear that he isn’t good enough for her, that he’s too broken for her.
She doesn’t have to “fix” him the way women do in older tropes. He makes himself the man she deserves, with incredible difficulty. At the end of the season, he’s helping other trafficked girls at the Menagerie escape and offering them an alternative. He’s continuing her work at sea. They’re still working together, even apart.
Inej is never second in Kaz’s thoughts. She’s the heart and soul of his life.

Inej is asking out of genuine concern if anyone to protect Kaz while he went through his obvious traumas, and he responds with essentially his angsty equivalent of "you're one to talk". He tells Inej, "I know there was no one to protect you. Why would there be anyone for me?"

I think when Kaz repeated what Inej said back to her in the tomb scene he was essentially saying no in a defensive way. I'm pretty confident in this because both we (and kanej) know that there WASN'T anyone to protect Inej, that she had to protect herself. And I think that's what Kaz is trying to say to her. That their similar in that way, that on some level he relates to her, but he's emotionally constipated to just say the damn words!

So I need to read the books but I watched Shadow and Bone all because I read snippets of the kanej bathroom scene, and that doesn't compare to the scene we got i agree!! I didn't realise it was the walmart version of it cause I thought it was like another scene or their own madeup scene for the show 😢😂 cause that bathroom scene was INTENSE in the books???
