My favorite example is when he starts to date the blond lady who is also a veteran and they have the whole conflict with his kid, and then like a few eps later they break up and she’s like “this isn’t the last you see of me” and then she completely disappears form the show and it’s never mentioned again
I cannot believe they were like "oh our actress is pregnant. Whoops guess they have to be together now" GIRLIE YOU HAVE TWELVE SEASONS LET THIS POOR WOMAN TAKE A BREAK 😭
THANK YOU!! I sooo wanted to see the alternate reality where the actress doesn’t get pregnant and then they get together in a proper payoff of 6 seasons of romantic tension
@@ordinarydream3r AND THE FACT THAT WAS THE NIGHT THEY FINALLY BONED TOO 😭 the tonal whiplash had me dying, no way it took killing my boy to hook those bozos up
I always felt like it was more of the fear and toooons of work Brennan had to do due to her childhood & abandonement. While I never judged her back in the day, boy did growing up clear out A LOT of what it meant to deal with motherhood. I can see how damn scary it is now that friends are starting to try purposefully to have children. I'm with Brennan. My career means my world and, in academia, it's rutheless. No kids, but if something change my mind, there'll be definitely a ton of stuff to work through
@@crizmeow8394 well, it does happen. That biological clock is no joke, and once it kicks into "last minute" gear, it can be hard to resist. Women do just change their minds seemingly out of nowhere. But it would be nice to see the media represent a woman who does not change her mind, and is completely chill with childlessness.
Everyone else watching this show: “idc about the science stuff, I only care about the slow burn” Me: “idgaf about the slow burn, I wanna know about the murders and the science😭” I still like their relationship but I feel like I’m the only one that also like the crime solving stuff
I loved both, as someone who knew nothing at all about the science of things (which honestly probably saved me from being irked if / when they got something wrong, as I might have been if this was my field of study) and would still listen to them go on for forever about it. My ship was Angela/Hodgins, though, so I was in a way better place.
no but i totally get that, i took some anatomy and physiology classes in college and whenever they’d say science stuff i’d point at the screen and be like “omg i know what that is” lol
I’m a bit like you although I often don’t care about the B-plot in case-by-case shows. So like I really love the forensic aspect of Bones, it’s super cool but I found myself often skipping trough the personal side stories to get back to the bones (unless Angela and Hodgins were on screen, my favs). Even though I like Brennan and Booth as characters! This is why Lie To Me is one of my favorite shows. It really feels like every moment of the episode is focused on the A-plot one way or the other and the personal stuff is trickled in way more lightly.
My family and I were obSESSED with this show. We were watching it as it came out, and when I tell you I will NEVER forgive the showrunners for killing off Vincent Nigel Murray JUST to have Bones and Booth sleep together? Who thought that was a good idea?
You are *so accurate* when you point out Bones is terrible at sticking the landing, including the start of their relationship and all the bad guys. I re-watched it a couple years ago and I forgot *how badly* they fumbled the reveal of Gormagon, just some rando!! With sharp teeth, lol. Some stellar tv and characters, excellent lay-up, but trash at resolutions, lol. The Gravedigger episode where Brennan and Hodgins are buried is still one of the best episodes of tv of all time tho.
Dude yes, gormagon was the most interesting plotline and the corruption of Zach (which brought me to tears), but then it was just some DUDE that died the same episode?? Lame as hell. Gravedigger as a character irked me but the crime/plot around her is utterly re-watchable.
this show drives me crazy because booth is… so emotionally immature?? he cannot imagine a multiplicity of experience? “this is how love works, I’m right, you Will agree” idk… also just. when he goes hard interrogating someone, and then he throws a tantrum to get out of it anytime he has to be questioned 🙃 that man could not handle half the shit he puts sweets through. but he truly is a bush era ~hero~ ……anyway, you are So Right, they really squandered all the tension they built up!! and for what!!
Yup. I just wrote this down: Brennan was smart and logical; they made Booth opposite, so emotional and stupid. I would've gone with "complementary" and "emotionally intelligent and intuitive". They infantalized him to a degree that wore on me, man.
Better pregnancy trope idea that keeps the slow burn alive I came up with like 2 seconds after learning why they did it: Brennan decides falling in love with someone first shouldn't prevent her from being a mother and gets artificially inseminated after she realizes she wants a kid. Booth, being one of her closest friends that will stop at nothing to take care of a kid, helps her prepare for the baby and whatnot. The slow burn tension comes from them going through the motions of being new parents together but not actually being together.
And that would link back to when they sort of played with that idea in earlier episodes where she was considering becoming a parent and even asked Booth to be the donor.
This is one of the shows where I actually did want them to stay "just" friends. I hate to say "just" about friends and you should still be friends when you're together -- but I never thought he was right for her as a life partner. He was always trying to correct her socially and change her.
I liked the show in the beginning. I HATED how they destroyed her later. Especially when they reconciled religion, married her off to Booth, who was absolutely not right for her and then even gave her kids, which she was adamant she was not interested in. It's... annoying.
Yes. I admit the first time through the show I did all right for the most part but I believe a lot of that was because I watched it first with my mom (who liked Boreanaz and passed away before the show finished and then watched with stepmom). But the second run through...I remembered how much Booth actually frustrated me and how mad I was that Brennan became this "oh kids, yes, I love them, how could I do anything else?" ...being compared to Brennan, and later Sheldon...having that character do that 180...pissed me off... because I've been childfree for a long time and to switch an attitude...because you got pregnant...sounds like you're trying to put a band-aid on the situation. Incidentally I also hated what they did to Penny in Big Bang.
I related to Bones in the earlier seasons - It was dissatisfying to watch the parts of myself that I saw in her disappear, as if they were being “fixed”.
Honestly for a copaganda type show, its actually pretty left leaning esp the earlier seasons. Isnt there like a s1 ep thats like anti Iraq war, and about a coverup of soldiers killing civilians. Which is wild af for 2004/5 a show tackling an issue like that.
And the episode with the trans victim all the characters were correcting booth cause he kept saying "he/she" when it was "she" then at the end of the episode the partner of the trans character had an amazing speech that the victim's identity was valid and he loved her. Had me blubbering
The fact that the john wilkes booth thing only came up in season FIVE??? and Brennan was like "yeah- your face bones and things told me" like- go home Bones you're drunk
OH GOD THIS SHOW WAS MY CHILDHOOD I LOVED IT BUT EVEN AS I KID I WAS LIKE This slowburn is some bullshit GLAD TO SEE SOMEONE TALK ABOUT IT Also not related on this ship but SPOILERS!!! still not over sweets dying fuck this show
@@ordinarydream3r HE WAS MY FAV (also loved cam) AND I RELATED TO HIM AND HE WAS FUN AND HHHHH I WILL NEVER NOT BE SALTY IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE AND AFTER HE DIED THEY JUST ROLLED IN THE OTHER AGENT WHOSE NAME I DONT REMEMBER. FREAKING SWEETS 2.0 AND I COULD NOT LIKE HIM CAUSE HE WASNT SWEETS
My fave thing about david boreanaz is that he really puts his whole body language into booths character. Even in ending scenes with dialogue we cant hear, he always leans into her, etc. the acting he does in this dynamic is amazing
Honestly, they totally would've continued the slowburn if Emily hadn't gotten pregnant and they thought that they should write it in. There were so many other points in time they could've gotten together, but it only happened then. After Vincent Nigel Murray died. And then when she said she was pregnant, I was so confused, even though there was clear hints through that season finale episode that she was, with her sense of smell and the comment she made about if she and Booth/Buck had a kid. It felt like it came out of nowhere. I like how even Emily herself is like, "yeah, I didn't think they were going to write my pregnancy in".
I think they could have used her pregnancy as a way to keep them from getting together for longer. It could have been Sully's kid. Like, Booth was off with Hannah and Brennan could have been sad about that and Sully was in town and they hooked up and then later she could have had the scene with Booth and it could have been a question hanging over them, like "Who's the daddy?" and who actually fits with her better. And they could have had a better landing, with Brennan choosing Booth before knowing who the father is, and then Booth saying it doesn't matter if it's his or Sully's and later on finding out it's Booth's and both have their happy ending. Would have been more earned than the left-field-relationship we got.
Also Hodgins and Angela would totally read the fanfic to their perspective victims under the guise of settling a debate of if the characters are in love. The fanfic would be Bones and Booth’s real life interactions, relationship , and overall life saving moments. Booth would immediately say they are in love. Bones would not jump into conclusions and say “love is a combination of endorphins and other chemical reactions that create repetitive positive emotions toward an individual. However, I do concur her work partner does appear to be a trustworthy and consistent mate. Actually it was not until the Romans that rituals of marriage between individuals included an emotional aspect.” Then Hodgins and Angela would actually reveal the fanfic is them as a “We gotcha so kiss already” moment.
I was so into this show in hs. It was one of several murder shows I watched all the time. The inability to resolve plotlines also applied to the Jeffersonian team as well. The most prominent one to me is when Hodgins has all his money taken by Pilant cause he used the SAME PASSWORD for ALL his accounts and Angela could only save kids from a missle or his money. (Which is an insane sentence I'm now realizing). Also Angela going from very hippie esk artist to full on computer savant able to do snything related to computers instantaneously is never not funny to me. When pregnancy plotline first played out I thought I somehow missed an entire season and had to triple check I didn't cause it was so out of nowhere. Like they were slow buringing along and then BAM pregnant and together??
I just want to preface this story by saying that there are no Autistic people who are the exact same. If you've met one Autistic person, then you've met one Autistic person. It's called The Spectrum, not The Scale. So, I watched this show as it was coming out while I was a kid. I was diagnosed as Autistic when I was eight years old, but the area I grew up in didn't have any productive information about it. They just knew how to diagnose a person (mainly white cisgender males) if they were Autistic. The only explanation my parents were given about Autism by the doctor after I was diagnosed was, "I think it means he's different. He thinks outside the box"........These were actual statements given to my parents and I by a "medical professional. " With so little information about Autism, my family and I were forced to figure it out as we experienced each new situation. Years later, after a few of my other siblings were diagnosed and I married an Autistic black woman with ADHD, I can confidently state that we are now way more educated than we were when I was a kid, but while I was growing up I didn't have that confidence. A continuous question went through my mind. "What will it be like when I'm an adult?" All of the information and cute (sometimes traumatic) little videos we could find online were about Autistic toddlers. These vdeos occasionally had tidbits of helpful information but more times than not they were running the line of treating Autistic children like they were a "gift from heaven" or a "curse from hell." We were meant to be on a pedestal or looked down upon as helpless burdens, but either way they were not to be treated as equals to the "normal person." So through all the mostly unhelpful videos, there was nothing about Autistic 12 year old boys, let alone about Autistic adults. But, this all changed when my parents sat down to watch a show that had been going on for a while at that point called Bones. This show was crazy to me. Not because of the murder mysteries but because they had an openly Autistic adult female character on screen. Not to say the depiction was without faults, but it was the first time I got to see a system, a space that worked with a person like me. They never confirmed it, but I saw aspects of myself, traits I would find out later were Autistic, in the interns and other side characters that would pop up on the screen. They had created a safe space that allowed people like me to learn and thrive. I have never had an interest in forensic science but I remember as a young teen boy wishing that I could work there because these were the people that would understand me and if they didn't understand me they would try to. Sine then, I have created a similar safe space and system for my parents, siblings, my partner, and myself. I have grown past the little kid who didn't understand why he felt so overwhelmed after a day of playing with his friends, and I will attribute a lot of it to the work the me and my family put in to educating ourselves, but I will always remember this show for giving me my first vague reference of what I wanted for myself as an Autistic adult in a romantic relationship with the goal of becoming a parent.
As someone who was obsessed back in the day with Bones and later got into The X-Files, you can tell how big of an inspiration the latter was. Especially for the main characters' personalities and their dynamic. Brennan and Booth are basically a remix of Mulder and Scully. They even reference The X-Files a couple of times and point out their similarities.
Immediately subscribing because of your correct Bones opinions. I feel like you should watch Elementary. Vastly superior procedural mysteries, and Sherlock and Joan are the best platonic m/f relationship on TV. It's like a slowburn friendship, it's great. Also, the character arcs are SO STRONG. The plot isn't always amazing, but the character writing is 10/10.
"developed a gambling issue" Me: okay "because he k*lled people" Me:????????????? - context: I left the room for a bit and came back to hear this bit with no real context -
I used to love this show as a kid, specially the main character, but rewatching it filled me with so much rage, I think they did not any character justice and I despised Booth with my entire heart from the moment he’s on screen, he’s overconfident, a fed, he’s condescending with the scientists like he’s better than them, and annoying with his military propaganda bs and I despised how the show had to change and compromise Brennan’s character to make her end up with him, I hate they made her have kids when she didn’t want them at the beginning, and that they felt they needed to make her “warmer”
I'm having the craziest tension headache right now and I only figured out it got better when my jaw dropped at 17:50 (I've never seen Bones and now I'm invested purely for the remainder of this video) OMG NOT THE DANNY MOTTA LINE IM CRYINGGG
I used to watch Bones when I was younger and forgot all about it until much later. When I visited my parents last year for the holidays, a cable network was doing a run of the full series. I ended up watching multiple episodes at a time, starting from season 5 onwards. The formula of the episodes is so predictable but I was SO seated. Bones and Booth are so fascinating together.
*sigh* as someone who was obsessed with this show as a teenager and was there every step of the way, this video made me ugly laugh. Like girl I get it. I was actually cackling as I watched. This was beautiful. Thank you.
this is so validating for someone who was gripped by this show BECAUSE OF THESE TWO. that painful type of slowburn that reminds me of mulder and scully from the x files
I still cant believe that they Ross and Racheled this ship (Sorry about spammin i have not been able to talk about this show in years and now all my memories just hit me in the face)
The beauty of a Bones retrospective with an intro using Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl from a fellow Capricorn with impeccable taste just… called to me. Bones is my special interest of an early 2000s TV show where like…half of the episodes are pretty useless but the characters will pull me through every SINGLE TIME
PREACH GURL!!!!!!! This topic has been on my mind for YEARS!!!!!! I love Booth and Brennan together, they have such a great building and communicative relationship (like you said!) but they always fumbled it! Like my guys let it make sense! Let them be happy! No one else has ever understood my frustration (my love-hate relationship if you will) with this show. It is so nice to hear it put into words! Amazing job! Amazing video!
Bones, Criminal Minds, and Ghost Whisperer hand me in a CHOKEHOLD!!!!! Happy to know my past middle school and high school obsessions are now being properly spreading.
Watched every episode of Bones as it aired. Every time a main cast or recurring cast member from the Jeffersonian died, it was because they got a job on another show as a lead or in Sweets' case was pivoting to more behind the camera activities. Emily's husband makes a cameo as the priest who is walking them through their (Booth & Bones) ceremony. There is, in fact, a Sleepy Hallow crossover as they were on the same network. Criminal Minds is a CBS show while Bones belongs to FOX(with no producers in common), so they wouldn't have been able to cross. (The only crossovers over two different networks were shows in the Dick Wolf universe, aka Law & Order & FBI)
am currently watching supernatural, another old long tv show and am not even half way through but u gave me courage after u finished 12 seasons of bones lol used to find bones on tv when i was really young but idk sht about it, but am sat for your recap
Loved ur energy reviewing this. Grew up watching it air on tv but fell out when I hit college. Secretly been wondering this whole time how it ended but was too proud to look it up.
Ok but who among us *hasn't* had the experience where you have a romantic dream about a friend that leads you to be really confused until the limerence wears off a couple hours later?? 😂 Also Josh Keaton jumpscare as I play WoW on my other monitor. Love it.
Kathy reichs wrote dr Brennan with inspiration from and person with Asperger's she knew. She said in an interview in 2013 that basically Brennan is not an aspie, she's just a "bit different" on tv ... Which gives off wierd vibe (I can see how she meant well by not openly saying she wrote an autistic character but in this economy it's preposterous)
This show was my obsession when I was in Uni. I loved Booth and Brennan so much but after a while I fell off because of school etc. I didnt watch the last few seasons, but I will one day. Being a part of the fandom in the early days was amazing. We were rabid. If you read a Cam/Zack fanfic from back in the day it was prolly mine.
I totally feel they had to rush Booth and Brennan’s relationship because they chose to write the pregnancy in. And like I know Brennan contemplates children before that so it’s not like the motherhood change completely changed the character, but I totally agree with you on the writers didn’t know how to pull off the big climatic over arching things in the show. They should have totally hidden it instead to let the relationship grow more without the rush of a kid. Those first few seasons had the best chemistry.
when i was 20 and a girl broke my heart, i went into a 3 month depressive episode and did NOTHING but go to class and binge Bones. the waY THIS SHOW STILL HAS ME FUCKED UP
The period of me watching bones lastet longer than my two relationships. Here are some of my thoughts: - i took a long break after them getting together cause it was anticlimactic - every case the murderer/perpetrator is the 1 or 2nd person they contact - sweets 😭 - Im yet to find a show that can hold up this well as background noise - I actually love hodgings and positively tolerate Angela - bro I didn’t even notice how much the actors matured over time 👀
Lance Sweets means so much to me and when he dies I was devastated. Then when booth and Brennan had to tell their daughter that her uncle sweets wasn’t coming back I was forever changed and broken.
I still adore this show bc I love the characters + it's something me and my mom bond over, but some of the choices they made story-wise... Were insane 😬 Bones is my ultimate "I know it's not very good but I'll still love it" show
I was SOOOOO into this show, but after they wrote Brennan getting pregnant I never watched another episode. I legit didn't know how this show ended until now, lol. It made me so mad because I was just like, this is not the carefully planned and curated life of Temperance Brennan and I refuse to accept it. They probably had time before Emily started showing to at least have ONE episode where she kinda goes, "You know what, kids with Booth would be okay" and then like give us a bit of a time jump- they had done that before. I'd legit have been less mad if they jumped the show a year or two ahead and worked backward to tell us how they decided to get married and have kids. OR....they could have had her stand behind tables all season like How I Met Your Mother, LOL.
They hooked people in for 12 seasons because we literally had enemies to lovers elements and friends to lovers. Bones is “logical” and Booth is conservative in some aspects like religion so they bump heads. However, they grow to appreciate their differences when they realize both of their skills are needed to bring justice to the victims and give them a voice. Bones learns people skills like empathy and compassion is important to help those who are left behind. Booth learns behind that stoic intelligence is a deep desire to help those who were literally silenced. Superficiality differences but values and core is the same. (AKA BAMON = Bonnie and Damon sorry I am still seething decades later.)
I used to watch this as a literal child, and the only things I remember are them getting stuck in an elevator together, and that someone has a literal whip at some point during a really emotional scene
I'm just here to say I'm here and to boost this video to make Ordinarydreamers second video post-return as dramatic and impressive as it deserves to be.
I whole heartedly agree. The best part of a slow burn is the scene when they FINALLY get together and they decided to just NOT do that???? We also then missed the whole shift from friends to lovers because the next episode is the start of the new season and they set it like a year later. THE WHOLE POINT IS GETTING THE HONEYMOON PERIOD AND THE AWKWARD MOMENTS!!! PUT A BOX IN FRONT OF EMILY! HIDE HER BELLY SO WE COULD HAVE THAT!!
I love how you went from "Not gonna watch all TWELVE seasons of Bones" to "I'm now watching Criminal Minds" which has 17 seasons out (15 of the original run, 2 new ones on Paramount+) 😂 I loved watching both because of how long they were. I didnt have to figure out what to watch for months at a time!
the way i watched this show Twice and stopped BOTH times in season 10 when booths gambling addiction comes back. hopefully one day i finish and get to seasons 11 and 12 but like i just couldnt do it idk why. after 10 seasons of them going thru all the partnership development, that arc specifically feels like theres such a wedge btwn them bc booth is hiding his gambling obv but with the addition of them now having a kid and everything it feels like theyre less of a unit. and them being a unit is half the draw of the whole show so 😭
I don’t understand why they bothered having big bads building up in the background and they dropped every one of them and chose to do the addiction storyline instead, like why
this show practically invented the whole “slowburn is better than the relationship” problem 😭 edit LMFAO NOT THE VOLTRON REF i guess i have to sub now over this shared trauma edit 2 I WAS ALREADY SUBBED? hi glad i found you again 💕
You are extremely entertaining! I’ve tried to finish this show so many times, literally just to know what happens to them! I couldn’t do it, so thank you for the summary!
I was obsessed with this show when I was in highschool. Stopped watching it when the hacker threaten to end people if Booth accepted Bone's proposal. Apparently that's where I drew the line at stupid tropes.
I used to watch this show, and I liked it a lot while it was a slow burn. But when they got together and had a baby - it immediately became very boring very quick
The wildest part of the pregnancy plot is that they waited so long to incorporate it into the story that Emily was very visibly pregnant long before Bones should have been. I remember watching her tell Booth she was pregnant and I was like yeah sis, we know😭
A couple of decades ago my husband bought me the Bones DVD boxset and I was like "thanks...but why did you buy me this?" and he said "because its your favorite show" and I was like "......no, it is not. I don't care about this show at all" and he was like "why do you watch it all the time then?" and so I absolutely must have loved it? I don't know, but I get your confusion.
I don't care how badly some things were handled, or that they rushed some arcs while dragging out others, I still love the show just the way it is. Well except for the fact that them finally making a move on each other was just a fade-to-black ambiguous scene, I will NEVER forgive them for that lol. It would have been magical. I want to believe there's a timeline where that scene actually happened. Giving the writers the benefit of the doubt, maybe they did that because their bond was so strong that we didn't actually need to have a physical demonstration that they do love each other, but girl, we NEEDED that. I think I started watching it around season 3 with my mom as it was coming out, and we would watch it together whenever we could. We just made it about halfway of season 5 though, because I was too busy with college. A few years later I decided to watch the whole show (it still had one season left) and it had me on a chokehold. I actually saw the final season as it was coming out and bawled my eyes out when it finished. It was mainly nostalgia tears, but I have rewatched the whole show a few times over the years and I still love it, even if my perspective has shifted on some things. Also this show will forever remind me of my mom, she passed away a few years ago.
lmfao honestly, procedural crossovers are always the most fun. they're practically tailor made to intersect! my favorite is a criminal minds/grimm series that tragically got abandoned art way through the second fic 😭
At the very least, you saved an internet stranger another month of a Hulu subscription because I couldn't get through it all for a rewatch, thank you!! But also, excellent point you made about how the characters trust each other. It's something I didn't realize I appreciated about the writing!
the way i have been watching so much Jenny Nicholson, Athena P, Li Speaks, Frootbats' "Fraggle Rock: Season 1" video, Caitlyn McKillop ship-breakdown series, Dominic Noble, Jase I Think's "Dork Diaries" video, Quinton Reviews, and MORE while i work that i did a surprised double-take when you got to season 1, episode 15 THAT quickly lmao rip (for the record, i absolutely would listen to you do an episode-by-episode summary review of any show. but you can also Not Do That and id listen to that too ✌️)
also bc of how you ended this: i would like to confirm that i know "Bones". i watched it. i watched this video for you and "Bones", i enjoyed my time here, not a waste of time (the following is an essay to confirm why i forgive so much of "Bones" fumbling. you dont have to agree with me. i just realized "oh, i could talk about the parts i know regarding this industry and reaults in why this era of tv has writing problems Like That, which then annoy everybody watching" + "this could result in engagement". so i wrote the essay about what i know about the industry, about how romances in shows like this genre that are also from this era (that i have seen. i might be missing something. but out of what i HAVE seen lol) unfortunately dont get better than "Bones"'s shot. then i (and my family since we all watched "Bones" together) kind of recommended you some shows "that are like 'Bones' and 'Criminal Minds'" out of what we have seen. but also this was so long, i had to cut it up lol BUT AGAIN: you dont have to agree with me, you can still say you feel like you wasted your time, you dont have to watch any recommendations any of us make. no pressure lol) also i would like to confirm that my parents are serial-watchers of drama copaganda with 10+ seasons (aka: no "Brooklyn-99" or "Psych", i had to watch those with my brother/a lil bit solo. my parents just watch a lot of the "NCIS" connected-multi-show-universe and those like it. such as "Bones" and "Criminal Minds". by far "NCIS" was their favorite for at least a decade until Abby left (i spoil that bc "NCIS" explictly falls onto being zionistic propaganda after they bring in Ziva to the main cast. so. you wont wanna watch it. bc zionism, Israel, you get it). been this way since i was in middle school, at least. maybe as early as 5th grade?? idk. ive been either watching with them in living room (if i liked the show) or (if i didnt like the show:) trying to distract myself on my phone, while im laying down on the couch and theyre in their recliners (with my brother too, hes in the same boat as me. but he's older and im sickly, so hes away on/off more and im home more. im on gap year from college as docs try to figure out how to treat me and make shit sustainable. so. lots of me being home, no work or school, bc my health is too much of a roller-coaster for me to maintain even an online job/class. booooooo) i digress tho. i just wanted to state my credentials lmao ●●● and (1) hilarious how opposing we are. i found "Bones" the easiest to watch bc it didnt give me nightmares, i always was going "aw, sweet, their dead body doesnt look enough like a dead body for my scaredy-cat senses". so now im wondering if they actually DID look realistic and i just didnt get uncanny valley bc MY INDIVIDUAL brain went "that looks enough like a skeleton for me to associate it with Spirit Halloween instead of a corpse now, hooray!" even tho said skeleton may have still looked like a corpse.. whereas other shows' realistic dead bodies DID give me nightmares, like "Criminal Minds" and "NCIS" and so on.. ●●● and (2) i personally still enjoy my time with "Bones" bc im very used to long-running shows like this having to have the writers apply irl shit into the narrative. like, Sweets only died bc his actor wanted to leave (to become a director). same with Nigel-Murray, really (for a different show, "Alphas", i never watched it, but i remember snorting bc ABO fics. then i watched it. and uhm. ill give a short review after i get back on track. but yeah, thats why he was killed off too). anyway. i think they couldve handled Emily Deschanel's pregnancy a LOT better too, but i forgive it for all that stuff. i still consider it to be the best romance, by FAR, out of the shows my parents have watched (which, remember, have to be dramas. so. "B-99" doesn't count here lol they WOULD be "Bones"'s only rivals in terms of romance if my parents' copaganda shows would include "primarily comedy with drama" and not be limited to "primarily dramas with some comedy") but yeah, to continue what i mean about the industry and whatnot of these LONG running shows: (part 1 of essay comment)
(part 2) but yeah, to continue what i mean about the industry and whatnot of these LONG running shows: "NCIS" has lost its core cast-members a few times over bc they wanted to leave (and now two of them are coming back??? with "NCIS: Tony and Ziva"???¿? a show which nobody should watch when it does release bc, even tho the actress isnt even Jewish, Ziva is EXPLICITLY and OFTEN BRINGS UP how she is an Israeli Jew and ergo this show is an Isn't-Real-propaganda of zionism??? pardon?? change Ziva to a Palestinian Jew or something at least, itll maybe make up for how islamaphobic this show is with having so many of their big baddies be Muslims hating America like wtf upon wtf upon wtf). most of them end up writing in pregnancy plots bc they cant afford to give actors that long of maternity leave (i wish they could/would tho. studio-heads could but wont; showrunners would but cant. so we are at an impasse where we need to smack the studio-heads with a baseball bat) but they cant give them a maternity leave or easily put the show on hiatus for a year. in no small part bc, back then, thatd mean theyd risk all the actors having new multi-season long commitments (bc theyd have to be, i guess, "on reserve maternity leave" for Emily Deschanel's maternity leave??) and they'd lose the cast and crew. hiatuses for a year or longer only really happen bc they basically pay everyone for "making us a priority" (which is not enough for rent) and only doing small jobs during rhe hiatus or otherwise longer jobs that theyre okay with leaving (and that's actors ans big "head writers", "director", "cinetography/lead camera" position. they say fuck off to the smaller positions usually ans just replace them. theyll re-hire if the person applies again, but no "new pls stay money". and ive only heard that happening a few times?? and i dont even know a specific show that has done that, i just heard one of my "i work as a background character crowd-hire thing" talk abit how that happens a rare time or two if you have studio-exec heads who LOVE the show (specifically: love the show more than money). waaay more often, its a "hiatus and we pay no one, everyone is on their own until we can allign the stars to have The Most Important People come back" and it is up to the actors/writers/other-important-roles-within-the-crew themselves to be courtesous enough to not sign onto a long-running show. or sometimes they have to bc of a contract, but not bc theyre given pay or anything for the hiatus to incentize them bc everyone is basically on freelance. nobody's hired for a long time (that includes animation, as we are seeing in Animation Strikes rn, support the animation union), nobody's tied to a studio, theyre all only there for as long as the show is being made (and actors also get paid pennies any time cable re-runs their show. they dont get money for how many times their series gets seen by people paying for streaming; bc streaming claims "we're still so new, we dont know if we will be successful" garbage. its part of why there was that Actors & Writers strike). anytime the show isnt being made?? theyre all next-to-unemployed and looking for work elsewhere (i say "next-to-unemployed" bc, if theyre part of a Guild, then that union pays them a lil while they are between shows and keeps their insurance an open option. but only if they can get cast enough to "earn it". that's why you probably saw Josh Keaton. and why there is a joke about everyone everywhere being on "Law & Order" for an episode or two. voice-actors and other types of actors (of all sizes) will take these one-off roles to help keep the Guilds happy so they can keep getting money and insurance while they search to get cast for roles that are more main-character-y or side-character-but-still-main-cast-y. and stuff like "Law & Order" needs a ton one-off characters, there isnt too often overarching stuff, so its a good place to go for that) really, the only other option they had, if not to write in the pregnancy plot, is the same one they have right now: write around it. have Brennan wear baggier clothes, have the cameras do more shots of her from above the stomach or with creative angles to hide her stomach, try to do as much filming as they can before she starts showing, and then everyone does their shots out of order so that those 12 weeks of her leave are filled with the rest of the cast and crew doing scenes without Brennan's characters (so, for "Bones", that'd be a lot of the Hodgkins' lab scenes and the Angela's lab scenes that don't involve Brennan, as well as any side-plots without Brennan). shows have done it before, theres some fun compilations of "characters where you didnt realize their actor was pregnant". Zooey Deschanel herself is one such example, and "New Girl" got lucky that Zooey didn't look too pregnant thanks to a mix of her genes + costuming in the end of season 4/beginning of season 5 (plus, she warned them ahead of time, so they were able to schedule everyone to film intensively for the latter half of season 4 and to start filming season 5 IMMEDIATELY after they were done with filming season 4). but idk if they were paid to stay available during Zooey's maternity leave, im kinda surprised they seemed?? to have? halted filming? a bit?? not a lot, bc apparently Zooey Deschanel allegedly worked UNTIL her daughter was born?? (maybe i misunderstood the articles back then tho) i remember they brought in Megan Fox as (cue me realizing i dont know if youve watched "New Girl" or if im confusing you with a diff youtuber)... a character who dates one of the guys in the apartment that was "obviously in end-game" with another main-cast-chatacter (which i say bc by season 5, you wont know if it is any of the guys, bc all three, i think, have met/started dating their end-game match). they did this so they could both spend show-time focusing on Megan Fox's character × [insert Winston, Schmidt, or Nick] relationship yet had her be "just a girlfriend" so she could also eventually leave. but her character was well-written and im glad she stayed so long! so thats how they excused Jess being in season 5 less, and just did as much of Megan-Fox's-character-scenes-without-Jess as they could. and just had any scenes involving Zooey Deschanel wait until her return. but like. again, even with all that planning, Zooey Deschanel worked UNTIL her daughter was born, then activated her maternity leave???? but yeah. overall? studios manipulating all these people to only be able to freelance? for just one show?? instead of hiring them to the studio's retainer, and re-organizing things a bit so they could temporarily having actors guest-star/do one-offs or have the crew play support for other shows within the studio for a year while Zooey Deschanel was with her baby? just. yeah it's messed up, for sure older Hollywood where actors and crew WERE signed on to studios was not better though. back then, they had it so if you signed on 3 years with a studio, that meant they crammed you in to as many movies and shows and commericals and whatnot as they could within those 3 years. that'd part of why so many black-and-white film-era actors were addicted to cigarettes and drugs, they had trouble staying away and memorizing lines while filming for multiple things in tandem. one of the most bittersweet examples of this was from this actress whose name escapes me rn. but she was on so many films at the same time and having trouble memorizing all her lines and what went to which that she sobbed as she vented to her co-star in one of them, Jimmy Stewart, after she'd been yelled at earlier that day for forgetting her lines and reciting the wrong script. the next day, she was on a different set, in-costume, about to flub another line, when she heard whispers from above. and these whispers were telling this actress her lines?? baffled, she looked up to the source and realized Jimmy Stewart was up in the rafters, where the light-crew normally goes and fiddles with things, holding her script for this movie he was not even in, and telling her what her next line was. she almost cried with relief and gratitude for him. they were good friends. a sweet story, but definitely wtf kind of circumstances to have so normalized, for sure. actors of that era and their unions fought hard for their contracts to be changed from "signed per year" to instead be "signed per movie" or "signed per season of a show". and studio-heads found a way to weasle an unsustainable enviroment out of that too another bittersweet story is how kind it was for Cole and Dylan Sprouse to agree to do "Suite Life on Deck" so all the cast and crew that didn't have a job lined-up after "Suite Life of Zack & Cody" could still have a job for a few more seasons. all so said other cast/crew could better plan to make savings for when that show ended if they couldn't find another job asap/had another timeline to go find a new job lined-up asap afterwards, bc the Sprouse twins were so grateful for how well this crew and their co-stars took care of them when they were children and wanted to help take care of them back so, again, shows of the early 2000s and nowadays aren't much better, and Hollywood from before then definitely also didnt have a handle on the right way to film things. plus, now we have streaming making a further muck of things. i wish studio-heads could allow actors (and crew) a fucking steady, sustainable career, jfc (part 2 ended. next is part 3)
(part 3) but yeah. so, circumstances for Emily Deschanel's pregnancy were already against the show in terms of what the writers could accomplish. bc, unlike "New Girl" where we have other romances to get absorbed in with Schmidt, Cece, Winston, and Nick when he is outside of Jess; "Bones" doesn't have that as much?? maybe they couldve done something with Sweets/Daisy, Hodgins/Angela, (maybe they couldve introduced Arastoo earlier for Camille or) Camille and Michelle, Booth and Parker and/or Rebecca (but Booth and Rebecca would feel weird bc noooo Booth/Brennan forever, dont maybe tease Booth and his son's bio-mom?), Zack, maybe Angela and her dad??? all of these im shaky on except Zack, bc they kinda did all they reasonably could?? idk how theyd make Michelle relevant to the Jeffersonian since she is just a kid to get the cast equal screentime but without Brennan, they did a LOT as is with the sub-ship of Sweets/Daisy and Angela/Hodgins. i guess id also always love more on Camille and Sweets and Hodgins family backgrounds (even tho Sweets' parents are long-since dead) (im ngl tho, i think Daisy is fine but i dont have an interest in her. i could be fine with going into her backstory more. but id rather not), or about Angela's unnamed mother, i could perhaps see something with Angela and her dad but they cast THE Billy Gibbson as him (if you dont recognize him, he's a rock musician though i know him for his blues rock stuff specifically. he did a lot of solo stuff and was in multiple bands, but his most famous band is probably ZZ Top who was Gibbson made his debut alongside. but dude has an expansive rock legacy from the 70s on) (therefore he was busy with touring and music-making and probably also was $$$ to get when we did see him. thats my theory why we got the quick gag about Hodgins having an Angela tattoo in the desert and all those random "Hodge saw her dad in the distance as he got stalked" shots; instead of that PLUS a confrontation and/or with Hodgins waking up to the tattoo with Angela's dad still there to issue more punishment. idk if it was a "let's pitch him this so it is a guarantee to works with his schedule/within budget" or if it was "well he said no to the og pitch but we can do this absurd hilarity instead since he is able to give us x-amount-of-time" kind of chicken-or-egg situation, but im sure his fame played a part in that one-episode gag specifically). and... i guESS they couldve introduced Aubrey earlier, had him work under Sweets or something (it couldve worked! but i wouldve hated it bc i dont like Aubrey. mostly bc i dont like it when any dead character is quickly replaced, so ill admit it isnt ALL Aubrey's fault.. but also i just didnt like Aubrey himself. plus i find it unreasonable that a museum/the government would be so quick to find a replacement, ive worked a bit in both and had loved ones make careers there, neither re-hire people quickly, they make their current workers overloaded for a year at minimum and THEN re-hire; i wouldve liked Aubrey better if theyd had his debut delayed at least few episodes with "i keep trying to hire someone new for Sweets old position but the higher-ups are dragging their feet!" so i could recoup enough first. or if Sweets never left at all, and Aubrey was just HIS intern or secretary or something they made important, idk, Sweets actor didnt HAVE to leave to go become a director, he couldve directed some episodes or maybe worked in Sweets having a sabbatical again?? i wish Sweet had had stayed until the end). but all of that buys up time. it doesnt excuse Brennan's absence in Booth's cases, it just means Brennan couldve had less scenes Bc We Are Focusing On This Instead. so idk. i dont think they HAD a ton of warning with Emily Deschanel's pregnancy?? thats me assuming things tho. i think the tone of her quote about "idk about the pregnancy plotline for Brennan/Booth either" was just her being surprised they couldnt think of something else or didnt try to edit her pregnancy out. as, if they did have warning, hopefully they couldve used: ● "fuuuuck, i have loose ends out in the jungle i have to go back for, hold up (Brennan is out for a while excuse) (maybe, tangential to that, she could have been doing airport drama for a while with "this flight got cancelled and they put me on a new one for lay-away but now im in CANADA" mayhem of being in different places while she tried to be back in time for a specific event), ● upped a pre-existing dynamic of Brennan's to take prominence (i already discussed why the others wouldnt have worked; they just take up time for Brennan to have less scenes, not explaines Brennan's absence) (the only Brennan-focused-recurring-character-plotline i could think of even just MAYBE working out was this. i wouldve very much bought Brennan being with her brother for something that resulted in Brennan being on the run with Russel; and then had her absence in the lab/with Booth result in the upped presence of her dad's as he and Booth team-up for a while while they try to figure out Brennan's clues she's leaving. like let them have more of their dynamic and further repair any aspects of that, bc Booth caring for Brennan's dad is an extension of his love for Brennan. plus itd be kinda funny with him potentially going "Lord? When I said I was swearing off women as my partners, that was not an invitation for you to help and also I did nOT MEAN MY WORK PARTNER" in a prayer scene comedy bit in a church (he's praying more bc hes THAT worried abour Brennan) (maybe make a nun or priest a recurring side-character for Booth too. have him go to church a lot to further "show, dont tell" us how worried he is for Brennan by having all his prayers be for Brennan and have people say "Youre at church more than usual"/"Yeah, someone I lov-- know is going through something really awful right now, and... I'm helping in all the ways I can, y'know??" and it would make sense for the church to basically disappear from the show once Brennan returns bc!! well yeah!! Booth is doing his regular once-a-week or however much, i forget how much he went before ngl, bc Brennan is back!!! so obviously the church would be involved less! duh! or maybe have a villain be from the church idk) and have "LET US GO JAM PACK FILMING SCENES WITH BRENNAN AS EMILY" be green-screen and costumes of her in different rented phone-booths, all in extreme close-up to only give limited view of where she is with her brother while she tries to keep Booth informed while also not too informed bc "theyll take you off this case bc of how important you are to me, Booth, and i need you here. i need you and my dad not to be in the dark about this, and i need to keep the FBI in the dark, so this is what i have to do to so the FBI will let you both be as in as you can get with my influence. even if they just think its bait to trace where this call is coming from. i have to go, my time's up") (but also id feel so bad doing that to Russ bc he just got out of prison, idk. and i have NO CLUE what possibly Russ could need Brennan for so long for, but i think they probably couldve had it made sense with him being like "i dont want to abandon you again" and her issues about being left behind or something as a significant part to help curb the believability of An Actual Reason. idk what tho) (maybe Loren Dean was too busy at this point?? idk what he was up to back then. maybe things clashed. i wouldve bought a re-casting style "plastic surgery" thing though, long as they made the crime/cause of Russ' running and thinking on "how could plastic surgery have fixed this" believable. bc, with Brennan, they could just be like "Well, I thought it would work maybe! That I could sacrifice some cash and make this work, make the problem go away all by myself, not cause you any trouble! "/"Obviously, it didn't work! If you had told me all this was happening, Russell, AS it was happening, I could've told you that of course that wouldn't work!!" maybe take it a notch further and make Russ a transwoman who, hey, might as well transition while all this is/was going on and gotten feminization facial surgery, idk. maybe Russell just wasn't out yet to Brennan and used "my old voice from before I took vocal training" over phone-calls with Brennan, and then this all happened and "hey sis so i have some news.. and also i need help/for you to run with me for a season" bc they did end up doing one okay episode about trans-binary people ans being as respectful as couldve been expected of the time (...less so that trans-nonbinary episode buT SHHHH as a they/them myself, i like to ignore that episode) (i duNNO, IM SPIT-BALLING, but even then!! even then! (part 3 has ended. next is part 4)
(part 4) how the hell would Brennan make it not being an accessory ans be able to work in the Jeffersonian/with Booth in cases after?? idk. i especially dunno how court-cases in the 2000s worked APPARENTLY bc i saw a re-run of the court-episode where Brennan's expertise was DISMISSED ENTIRELY bc she was seeing a therapist. JUST THAT. i could rant more about that, and i will, in a sec, but after i finish this overall point about the industry. my point here is: i can see why they didnt go with a route like this even if they DID think to involve Russ and Brennan's dad and maybe even a church somehow. the consequences would take a WHILE AND A HALF to resolve and itd take some serious brainstorming to come with "why would Russel involve his sister??" AND hopefully "how can we keep Russel out of prison after this" bc he just got out, let him not go back 🥺) (and like.. i know i suggested having maybe Zack. but it still wouldnt work for the same court-reasons. but like. i could kinda see Brennan being involved if BOTH Zack and Russel were involved?? maybe Zack and Russell know each other somehow and like "Brennan is a common surname and I assumed any sibling of yours would be named Merit or Justice or something matching with Temperence"/"Your brother didn't use his real name" and that's why Brennan would be involved...??? idk, man. again, i can see why they couldnt go this way if they thought to even GO this way) ● or be like "New Girl" with Megan Fox and insert a new main-cast-but-still-side-character for a while?? a similar "LET US GO JAM PACK FILMING ALL SCENES WITH BRENNAN WHILE EMILY IS STILL HERe okay she's gone so let's do scenes with xyz a new temporary-but-still-important-character" maybe something with a new intern? .....yeah, it'd have to be a new intern, ughh (and ill be honest with you: idk which interns were of prominence before Brennan's pregnancy except for, OBVIOUSLY, Zack, Arastoo, and Jessica. but i LOVED Finn and Wendell; i really liked Clark, minus a couple of his awkward moments; i liked Fisher, Nigel-Murray, and Starret a lot too) (i also wouldnt have minded a return of Daisy (tho i like her off-team re-appearances better than when she worked with and annoyed everyone, even tho i thought she was fine enough, i just didnt like everyone else's complaining. that i found annoying and therefore wanted her off the team so everyone else would shut-up since it was clear that the show wouldnt have everyone else Be Less Judgey), Brinkley (who changed to prarie dogs, and i get if they couldnt afford to keep Betty White), The Science Dude (even tho he wasnt an intern.. still loved him so much), Gordon (who was Sweets mentor and not even an intern, but he said he wanted to try new things!!), or Sully (again! new things! but would be weird if that's how he came back)) (i wouldve been okay with them bringing back a changed Rodolfo, Wells, or Sammy. i wouldnt find it believable if Zack could ever come back, that feels a bit as absurd as all of the Jeffersonian tech, and i dont like all the too-futuristic tech lmao) (if they were to ever add a new intern, id want her to be punk-goth rockhead in giant platform boots who was inspired from Abby of "NCIS" or else have another fat intern be quirky and not-just-parroting-everybody (like Sammy) more inspired by Penelope of "Criminal Minds". either way, id like an eccentric woman p much if they were going to give a new hypothetical intern main-character-y status) (hypotheticals with bullet points over now) at any rate. i can see why they didnt pick any of the options they had. i just also think the option they DID PICK was one that STUNK regardless tho?? most copaganda shows i've watched don't have really good central romances ("NCIS" particularly, every romance that isn't from within the main cast? if that person from the main cast is dating someone not from the team?? probably are a cheater or will die, so said main-character can be single again so they can have their romance be a plot of another season) (part 4 has now ended. part 5 continuing)
My favorite way of dealing with a protagonist's pregnancy was Will and Grace, she is sitting or behind something all season, they even wrote in a joke about her being sitting and eating all the time
i hate hate hate the "ok im moving on" "wait i actually do like you" "well i have a girlfriend now" trope like get a new tropeee
SO TRUEEEE
"well im taken now" is so dumb 😔😔
My favorite example is when he starts to date the blond lady who is also a veteran and they have the whole conflict with his kid, and then like a few eps later they break up and she’s like “this isn’t the last you see of me” and then she completely disappears form the show and it’s never mentioned again
its beyond irritating like stop dragging an innocent into the mix 🙄
@@crizmeow8394 yeah that was dumb. She was a journalist though.
The chokehold this show had on me as a child and teen was crazy
Same?? Like what was 5th grade me doing watching this show
@@GT-yl7sq no same T-T
It was played constantly on free TV channels 😔 It was always the plan to put Bones in our hands
The choke hold this show had on my WHOLE family bro
@@Feed-Me-Lore real I would watch this with my parents
I cannot believe they were like "oh our actress is pregnant. Whoops guess they have to be together now" GIRLIE YOU HAVE TWELVE SEASONS LET THIS POOR WOMAN TAKE A BREAK 😭
Im SO ANGRY ABOUT IT THEY WRITE HER PREGNANCIES SO BAD
THANK YOU!! I sooo wanted to see the alternate reality where the actress doesn’t get pregnant and then they get together in a proper payoff of 6 seasons of romantic tension
Yes, THIS. The slowburn was supposed to be an even longer slowburn but then the writers were uncreative and BAM
RIP Vincent Nigel Murray, high school me sobbed my eyes out in public and drew goofy ass memorials on my geometry homework
LMAO ur so real for that tho 😭 his death legit had me crying bc what was the reason
@@ordinarydream3r AND THE FACT THAT WAS THE NIGHT THEY FINALLY BONED TOO 😭 the tonal whiplash had me dying, no way it took killing my boy to hook those bozos up
Vincent Nigel Murray was my sweet, baby angel. I loved him so much.
He never got to see Avatar 2 😭
I still skip that episode bc i cant handle it
I hate how mean they where to bones for not wanting kids in the begining, they acted like it was the worst thing ever
I’m still mad they just had her say : ok I want a baby, out of nowhere, when she clearly did not want to
and she ended up being one of the best TV moms
The way "I'm pregnant" brought the ancestral African HEY! gasp out of me. Not Booth's trauma repeating 😅
LMAOO IM SCREAMING 😭 so real tho ajsjskks
Everyone else watching this show: “idc about the science stuff, I only care about the slow burn”
Me: “idgaf about the slow burn, I wanna know about the murders and the science😭”
I still like their relationship but I feel like I’m the only one that also like the crime solving stuff
Same, I really liked the crime show aspects about Bones especially since it leans more to the forensics side. The ex STEM kid in me was happy
@@altakugirl1257 OMG same😭gotta love the ex STEM effect😂
Who thought that was a good idea?
bruh my sentiments exactly!!! like it was so cheap imo like vincent nigel murray deserved more than a memory plaque of him in the building fr 😭
Fr why can't they let anybody on this show just move to Seattle or something when their contract is up 😭
You are *so accurate* when you point out Bones is terrible at sticking the landing, including the start of their relationship and all the bad guys.
The Gravedigger episode is amazing.
I believe the gormagon thing was rushed because of the writers strike happening at the time.
i go back and rewatch that gravedigger ep all the time. its so good!!
YES YES YESSSSSS
Yup. I just wrote this down: Brennan was smart and logical; they made Booth opposite, so emotional and stupid. I would've gone with "complementary" and "emotionally intelligent and intuitive". They infantalized him to a degree that wore on me, man.
Better pregnancy trope idea that keeps the slow burn alive I came up with like 2 seconds after learning why they did it:
Brennan decides falling in love with someone first shouldn't prevent her from being a mother and gets artificially inseminated after she realizes she wants a kid. Booth, being one of her closest friends that will stop at nothing to take care of a kid, helps her prepare for the baby and whatnot. The slow burn tension comes from them going through the motions of being new parents together but not actually being together.
That would have been better honestly
And that would link back to when they sort of played with that idea in earlier episodes where she was considering becoming a parent and even asked Booth to be the donor.
This is one of the shows where I actually did want them to stay "just" friends. I hate to say "just" about friends and you should still be friends when you're together -- but I never thought he was right for her as a life partner. He was always trying to correct her socially and change her.
It would have been fine if he had developed and grew and changed, but the only person who changed was Bones
@@roelin360 Right.
@@CLJlovesmalI pretty much fell off the show after they get together because it felt unrealistic. She was also the only one changing.
@@donotme8061 yes, I noticed that she was the only one changing, which felt very fake and unrealistic to an actual romantic relationship.
I related to Bones in the earlier seasons - It was dissatisfying to watch the parts of myself that I saw in her disappear, as if they were being “fixed”.
@@ivoryphoenix7 yes. EXACTLY. I was so sad bc of it
This show being my special interest in SECOND GRADE really said something 🫠
second grade??!!? i feel like ur entitled to some kind of compensation bc holy what 😭
LMAOOO mine too only bc my mom watched when I was growing up (also the same reason I love criminal minds)
SAME! I have vivid memories of 8 year old me playing with my American girl doll and reciting lines along with the characters from watching it so much
i get you bc like why was this my favourite show from like the ages 5 to 13??
never seen bones clicking cause its nadia
Same!
Aay me three!
You are so real
hearting this comment bc it’s divya 🫶🏽
Honestly for a copaganda type show, its actually pretty left leaning esp the earlier seasons. Isnt there like a s1 ep thats like anti Iraq war, and about a coverup of soldiers killing civilians. Which is wild af for 2004/5 a show tackling an issue like that.
And the episode with the trans victim all the characters were correcting booth cause he kept saying "he/she" when it was "she" then at the end of the episode the partner of the trans character had an amazing speech that the victim's identity was valid and he loved her. Had me blubbering
It wasn’t perfect but it was leagues better than a lot of other shows in that respect.
The fact that the john wilkes booth thing only came up in season FIVE??? and Brennan was like "yeah- your face bones and things told me" like- go home Bones you're drunk
oh my god as a bones fan, the slow burn was TORTURE after one point but i was still so obsessed.
OH GOD THIS SHOW WAS MY CHILDHOOD I LOVED IT BUT EVEN AS I KID I WAS LIKE
This slowburn is some bullshit
GLAD TO SEE SOMEONE TALK ABOUT IT
Also not related on this ship but
SPOILERS!!!
still not over sweets dying fuck this show
Like i need my slowburns start burning faster at some point. Maybe its the aroace in me. I cant handle allos not getting their shit together
bro do NOT get me started on sweets 😭😭 he was one of my favorites
@@ordinarydream3r HE WAS MY FAV (also loved cam) AND I RELATED TO HIM AND HE WAS FUN AND HHHHH I WILL NEVER NOT BE SALTY IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE
AND AFTER HE DIED THEY JUST ROLLED IN THE OTHER AGENT WHOSE NAME I DONT REMEMBER. FREAKING SWEETS 2.0 AND I COULD NOT LIKE HIM CAUSE HE WASNT SWEETS
I loved Bones, the drama was so complex for no reason! But the crimes were interesting 🤣
I tried to binge it and by the end I was so tired of every character I skipped the plot and just watch the murder part
I love this lmho! All the while, they’re discussing this next to a gruesomely decayed corpse 🤣
Discovering that they got together off screen is such a traumatic core memory for me it's like you plucked this video out of my head XD
From the title alone I am SO seated.
"Maybe you don't care and you just need some background noise".....Got me😅🤣🤣🤣
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKING ABOUT BONES
I SPENT FOUR MONTHS WATCHING IT, OFC I HAD TO TALK ABOUT IT 😭
i watched this show from age 8 to like 12 and what it did to my psyche was indescribable
my mom actually got mad at my dad and I for how much we made fun of the prius product placement
lmaooo no but like it was actually so funny tho once u noticed it xD
As soon as she said "F*CK *SS SHOW!!"
I WUZ SEATED!!!!! 🤣🤣💀💀
Honestly not surprised about the irl pregnancy thing considering what they did when Sweet's actor had scheduling conflict with a different show/movie
Beautifully written 🥲 I grew up on this show with no concept of what autism even was but I’ve always identified with Brennan
I ADORE Elementary!

That's me with the X-files
Scully and Mulder got me on episode ONE
I'm having the craziest tension headache right now and I only figured out it got better when my jaw dropped at 17:50 (I've never seen Bones and now I'm invested purely for the remainder of this video) OMG NOT THE DANNY MOTTA LINE IM CRYINGGG
Booth and Brennan, Hodgins and Angela are the blueprint for love but yeah, they had the best slow burn in television and dear god they fumbled it
I used to watch Bones when I was younger and forgot all about it until much later. When I visited my parents last year for the holidays, a cable network was doing a run of the full series. I ended up watching multiple episodes at a time, starting from season 5 onwards. The formula of the episodes is so predictable but I was SO seated. Bones and Booth are so fascinating together.
The chemistry of those two is what kept the show GOINGGGGG.
*sigh* as someone who was obsessed with this show as a teenager and was there every step of the way, this video made me ugly laugh. Like girl I get it. I was actually cackling as I watched. This was beautiful. Thank you.
I’m sooo glad I finished cooking just as Nadia dropped this because now I know what to watch while eating
this is so validating for someone who was gripped by this show BECAUSE OF THESE TWO. that painful type of slowburn that reminds me of mulder and scully from the x files
ALSO 1X15 WAS LIFECHANGING LMAO
Same and I felt the exact same way as her when they finally got together that was the most unsatisfying conclusion to that amazing Slow Burn
I still cant believe that they Ross and Racheled this ship
(Sorry about spammin i have not been able to talk about this show in years and now all my memories just hit me in the face)
Oh no… you’re watching criminal minds for the first time?
I’m waiting for a video on the mistreatment of Reid
As someone who was irrevocably shaped by Spencer Reid, I need this vid dESPERATELY

Love it.
favourite youtuber talking about my favourite show WEEEEEEE
Kathy reichs wrote dr Brennan with inspiration from and person with Asperger's she knew. She said in an interview in 2013 that basically Brennan is not an aspie, she's just a "bit different" on tv ... Which gives off wierd vibe (I can see how she meant well by not openly saying she wrote an autistic character but in this economy it's preposterous)
I'm not a random series watcher, so this is my first intro to Bones and no better person to listen to than Nadia ❤
The Danny Motta edit at 18:05 is crazy lmao
This show was my obsession when I was in Uni. I loved Booth and Brennan so much but after a while I fell off because of school etc. I didnt watch the last few seasons, but I will one day. Being a part of the fandom in the early days was amazing. We were rabid.
If you read a Cam/Zack fanfic from back in the day it was prolly mine.
You can fall in love with the potential of the characters and the actor's portrayals and still be critical of the writers.
Those first few seasons had the best chemistry.
when i was 20 and a girl broke my heart, i went into a 3 month depressive episode and did NOTHING but go to class and binge Bones. the waY THIS SHOW STILL HAS ME FUCKED UP
that’s all. that’s all i have to say.
The period of me watching bones lastet longer than my two relationships. Here are some of my thoughts:
- i took a long break after them getting together cause it was anticlimactic
- every case the murderer/perpetrator is the 1 or 2nd person they contact
- sweets 😭
- Im yet to find a show that can hold up this well as background noise
- I actually love hodgings and positively tolerate Angela
- bro I didn’t even notice how much the actors matured over time 👀
I have never been more affected by the death of a character than the death of a specific character from this show. SPOILERS IN REPLIES
Lance Sweets means so much to me and when he dies I was devastated. Then when booth and Brennan had to tell their daughter that her uncle sweets wasn’t coming back I was forever changed and broken.
I can never listen to the coconut song the same

The chokehold this slow burn had on me was diabolical
I used to watch this as a literal child, and the only things I remember are them getting stuck in an elevator together, and that someone has a literal whip at some point during a really emotional scene
last time I watched bones I was like eight years old so I think this is a good re intro personally
I haven’t finished this stupid ass series yet i will see you in six months ig😭
lolll see u then 🫡
I'm just here to say I'm here and to boost this video to make Ordinarydreamers second video post-return as dramatic and impressive as it deserves to be.
EXACTLY! I miss real tv! I would even take 4-6 seasons w 15 episodes only over what’s currently in place 😔💀
I’ve been searching for a good recap/analysis of this show since finishing it thank GOD you made this video, EXACTLY what I was looking for
They could never make me hate you bones ❤
I whole heartedly agree. The best part of a slow burn is the scene when they FINALLY get together and they decided to just NOT do that???? We also then missed the whole shift from friends to lovers because the next episode is the start of the new season and they set it like a year later. THE WHOLE POINT IS GETTING THE HONEYMOON PERIOD AND THE AWKWARD MOMENTS!!! PUT A BOX IN FRONT OF EMILY! HIDE HER BELLY SO WE COULD HAVE THAT!!
My mom used to watch this show when I was little, so seeing that title felt like a nostalgia jumpscare lol
31:18 Thank you, I was indeed drawing.
Me knowing absolutely nothing about Bones lets get comfy!!!
That no-camera voice over section is such a mood frfr
the way i watched this show Twice and stopped BOTH times in season 10 when booths gambling addiction comes back. hopefully one day i finish and get to seasons 11 and 12 but like i just couldnt do it idk why. after 10 seasons of them going thru all the partnership development, that arc specifically feels like theres such a wedge btwn them bc booth is hiding his gambling obv but with the addition of them now having a kid and everything it feels like theyre less of a unit. and them being a unit is half the draw of the whole show so 😭
but actually im glad to hear the series finale was satisfying maybe thatll make me get thru it 😭
I don’t understand why they bothered having big bads building up in the background and they dropped every one of them and chose to do the addiction storyline instead, like why
this show practically invented the whole “slowburn is better than the relationship” problem 😭
edit LMFAO NOT THE VOLTRON REF i guess i have to sub now over this shared trauma
edit 2 I WAS ALREADY SUBBED? hi glad i found you again 💕
You are extremely entertaining! I’ve tried to finish this show so many times, literally just to know what happens to them! I couldn’t do it, so thank you for the summary!
I used to watch this show with my Godmother. The nostalgia I have on this is insane... but not as insane as that godforsaken slowburn!!
I was obsessed with this show when I was in highschool. Stopped watching it when the hacker threaten to end people if Booth accepted Bone's proposal. Apparently that's where I drew the line at stupid tropes.
I appreciate this recap cause it killed the urge for me to watch this show fully
I tried to do it and it’s unbearable
I used to watch this show, and I liked it a lot while it was a slow burn. But when they got together and had a baby - it immediately became very boring very quick
The wildest part of the pregnancy plot is that they waited so long to incorporate it into the story that Emily was very visibly pregnant long before Bones should have been. I remember watching her tell Booth she was pregnant and I was like yeah sis, we know😭
Grew up watching Bones. They mishandled so many subjects but it is the one thing that you could put on any episode and I'm sat.
I was OBSESSED with this show in middle school. I binged it all, but couldn’t even get through one episode when I recently tried to rewatch it.
lmfao honestly, procedural crossovers are always the most fun. they're practically tailor made to intersect! my favorite is a criminal minds/grimm series that tragically got abandoned art way through the second fic 😭
At the very least, you saved an internet stranger another month of a Hulu subscription because I couldn't get through it all for a rewatch, thank you!!
But also, excellent point you made about how the characters trust each other. It's something I didn't realize I appreciated about the writing!
Oh my gosh you are talking about bones I Stan this show ❤❤❤
I agree with everything you said but also you reminded me that I loved this show and want to rewatch it, flaws and all
the way i have been watching so much Jenny Nicholson, Athena P, Li Speaks, Frootbats' "Fraggle Rock: Season 1" video, Caitlyn McKillop ship-breakdown series, Dominic Noble, Jase I Think's "Dork Diaries" video, Quinton Reviews, and MORE while i work that i did a surprised double-take when you got to season 1, episode 15 THAT quickly lmao rip
(for the record, i absolutely would listen to you do an episode-by-episode summary review of any show. but you can also Not Do That and id listen to that too ✌️)
speaking of: wild to have heard and recognized Danny Motta's voice in this video lmao rip
also bc of how you ended this: i would like to confirm that i know "Bones". i watched it. i watched this video for you and "Bones", i enjoyed my time here, not a waste of time
(the following is an essay to confirm why i forgive so much of "Bones" fumbling. you dont have to agree with me. i just realized "oh, i could talk about the parts i know regarding this industry and reaults in why this era of tv has writing problems Like That, which then annoy everybody watching" + "this could result in engagement". so i wrote the essay about what i know about the industry, about how romances in shows like this genre that are also from this era (that i have seen. i might be missing something. but out of what i HAVE seen lol) unfortunately dont get better than "Bones"'s shot. then i (and my family since we all watched "Bones" together) kind of recommended you some shows "that are like 'Bones' and 'Criminal Minds'" out of what we have seen. but also this was so long, i had to cut it up lol BUT AGAIN: you dont have to agree with me, you can still say you feel like you wasted your time, you dont have to watch any recommendations any of us make. no pressure lol)
also i would like to confirm that my parents are serial-watchers of drama copaganda with 10+ seasons (aka: no "Brooklyn-99" or "Psych", i had to watch those with my brother/a lil bit solo. my parents just watch a lot of the "NCIS" connected-multi-show-universe and those like it. such as "Bones" and "Criminal Minds". by far "NCIS" was their favorite for at least a decade until Abby left (i spoil that bc "NCIS" explictly falls onto being zionistic propaganda after they bring in Ziva to the main cast. so. you wont wanna watch it. bc zionism, Israel, you get it). been this way since i was in middle school, at least. maybe as early as 5th grade?? idk. ive been either watching with them in living room (if i liked the show) or (if i didnt like the show:) trying to distract myself on my phone, while im laying down on the couch and theyre in their recliners (with my brother too, hes in the same boat as me. but he's older and im sickly, so hes away on/off more and im home more. im on gap year from college as docs try to figure out how to treat me and make shit sustainable. so. lots of me being home, no work or school, bc my health is too much of a roller-coaster for me to maintain even an online job/class. booooooo) i digress tho. i just wanted to state my credentials lmao
●●●
and (1) hilarious how opposing we are. i found "Bones" the easiest to watch bc it didnt give me nightmares, i always was going "aw, sweet, their dead body doesnt look enough like a dead body for my scaredy-cat senses". so now im wondering if they actually DID look realistic and i just didnt get uncanny valley bc MY INDIVIDUAL brain went "that looks enough like a skeleton for me to associate it with Spirit Halloween instead of a corpse now, hooray!" even tho said skeleton may have still looked like a corpse.. whereas other shows' realistic dead bodies DID give me nightmares, like "Criminal Minds" and "NCIS" and so on..
●●●
and (2) i personally still enjoy my time with "Bones" bc im very used to long-running shows like this having to have the writers apply irl shit into the narrative. like, Sweets only died bc his actor wanted to leave (to become a director). same with Nigel-Murray, really (for a different show, "Alphas", i never watched it, but i remember snorting bc ABO fics. then i watched it. and uhm. ill give a short review after i get back on track. but yeah, thats why he was killed off too). anyway. i think they couldve handled Emily Deschanel's pregnancy a LOT better too, but i forgive it for all that stuff. i still consider it to be the best romance, by FAR, out of the shows my parents have watched (which, remember, have to be dramas. so. "B-99" doesn't count here lol they WOULD be "Bones"'s only rivals in terms of romance if my parents' copaganda shows would include "primarily comedy with drama" and not be limited to "primarily dramas with some comedy")
but yeah, to continue what i mean about the industry and whatnot of these LONG running shows:
(part 1 of essay comment)
(part 2)
but yeah, to continue what i mean about the industry and whatnot of these LONG running shows: "NCIS" has lost its core cast-members a few times over bc they wanted to leave (and now two of them are coming back??? with "NCIS: Tony and Ziva"???¿? a show which nobody should watch when it does release bc, even tho the actress isnt even Jewish, Ziva is EXPLICITLY and OFTEN BRINGS UP how she is an Israeli Jew and ergo this show is an Isn't-Real-propaganda of zionism??? pardon?? change Ziva to a Palestinian Jew or something at least, itll maybe make up for how islamaphobic this show is with having so many of their big baddies be Muslims hating America like wtf upon wtf upon wtf). most of them end up writing in pregnancy plots bc they cant afford to give actors that long of maternity leave (i wish they could/would tho. studio-heads could but wont; showrunners would but cant. so we are at an impasse where we need to smack the studio-heads with a baseball bat)
but they cant give them a maternity leave or easily put the show on hiatus for a year. in no small part bc, back then, thatd mean theyd risk all the actors having new multi-season long commitments (bc theyd have to be, i guess, "on reserve maternity leave" for Emily Deschanel's maternity leave??) and they'd lose the cast and crew. hiatuses for a year or longer only really happen bc they basically pay everyone for "making us a priority" (which is not enough for rent) and only doing small jobs during rhe hiatus or otherwise longer jobs that theyre okay with leaving (and that's actors ans big "head writers", "director", "cinetography/lead camera" position. they say fuck off to the smaller positions usually ans just replace them. theyll re-hire if the person applies again, but no "new pls stay money". and ive only heard that happening a few times?? and i dont even know a specific show that has done that, i just heard one of my "i work as a background character crowd-hire thing" talk abit how that happens a rare time or two if you have studio-exec heads who LOVE the show (specifically: love the show more than money). waaay more often, its a "hiatus and we pay no one, everyone is on their own until we can allign the stars to have The Most Important People come back" and it is up to the actors/writers/other-important-roles-within-the-crew themselves to be courtesous enough to not sign onto a long-running show. or sometimes they have to bc of a contract, but not bc theyre given pay or anything for the hiatus to incentize them
bc everyone is basically on freelance. nobody's hired for a long time (that includes animation, as we are seeing in Animation Strikes rn, support the animation union), nobody's tied to a studio, theyre all only there for as long as the show is being made (and actors also get paid pennies any time cable re-runs their show. they dont get money for how many times their series gets seen by people paying for streaming; bc streaming claims "we're still so new, we dont know if we will be successful" garbage. its part of why there was that Actors & Writers strike). anytime the show isnt being made?? theyre all next-to-unemployed and looking for work elsewhere (i say "next-to-unemployed" bc, if theyre part of a Guild, then that union pays them a lil while they are between shows and keeps their insurance an open option. but only if they can get cast enough to "earn it". that's why you probably saw Josh Keaton. and why there is a joke about everyone everywhere being on "Law & Order" for an episode or two. voice-actors and other types of actors (of all sizes) will take these one-off roles to help keep the Guilds happy so they can keep getting money and insurance while they search to get cast for roles that are more main-character-y or side-character-but-still-main-cast-y. and stuff like "Law & Order" needs a ton one-off characters, there isnt too often overarching stuff, so its a good place to go for that)
really, the only other option they had, if not to write in the pregnancy plot, is the same one they have right now: write around it. have Brennan wear baggier clothes, have the cameras do more shots of her from above the stomach or with creative angles to hide her stomach, try to do as much filming as they can before she starts showing, and then everyone does their shots out of order so that those 12 weeks of her leave are filled with the rest of the cast and crew doing scenes without Brennan's characters (so, for "Bones", that'd be a lot of the Hodgkins' lab scenes and the Angela's lab scenes that don't involve Brennan, as well as any side-plots without Brennan). shows have done it before, theres some fun compilations of "characters where you didnt realize their actor was pregnant". (maybe i misunderstood the articles back then tho) i remember they brought in Megan Fox as (cue me realizing i dont know if youve watched "New Girl" or if im confusing you with a diff youtuber)... a character who dates one of the guys in the apartment that was "obviously in end-game" with another main-cast-chatacter (which i say bc by season 5, you wont know if it is any of the guys, bc all three, i think, have met/started dating their end-game match). they did this so they could both spend show-time focusing on Megan Fox's character × [insert Winston, Schmidt, or Nick] relationship yet had her be "just a girlfriend" so she could also eventually leave. but her character was well-written and im glad she stayed so long! so thats how they excused Jess being in season 5 less, and just did as much of Megan-Fox's-character-scenes-without-Jess as they could. and just had any scenes involving Zooey Deschanel wait until her return. but like. again, even with all that planning, Zooey Deschanel worked UNTIL her daughter was born, then activated her maternity leave???? but yeah. overall? studios manipulating all these people to only be able to freelance? for just one show?? instead of hiring them to the studio's retainer, and re-organizing things a bit so they could temporarily having actors guest-star/do one-offs or have the crew play support for other shows within the studio for a year while Zooey Deschanel was with her baby? just. yeah it's messed up, for sure
older Hollywood where actors and crew WERE signed on to studios was not better though. back then, they had it so if you signed on 3 years with a studio, that meant they crammed you in to as many movies and shows and commericals and whatnot as they could within those 3 years. that'd part of why so many black-and-white film-era actors were addicted to cigarettes and drugs, they had trouble staying away and memorizing lines while filming for multiple things in tandem. one of the most bittersweet examples of this was from this actress whose name escapes me rn. but she was on so many films at the same time and having trouble memorizing all her lines and what went to which that she sobbed as she vented to her co-star in one of them, Jimmy Stewart, after she'd been yelled at earlier that day for forgetting her lines and reciting the wrong script. the next day, she was on a different set, in-costume, about to flub another line, when she heard whispers from above. and these whispers were telling this actress her lines?? baffled, she looked up to the source and realized Jimmy Stewart was up in the rafters, where the light-crew normally goes and fiddles with things, holding her script for this movie he was not even in, and telling her what her next line was. she almost cried with relief and gratitude for him. they were good friends. a sweet story, but definitely wtf kind of circumstances to have so normalized, for sure. actors of that era and their unions fought hard for their contracts to be changed from "signed per year" to instead be "signed per movie" or "signed per season of a show". and studio-heads found a way to weasle an unsustainable enviroment out of that too
another bittersweet story is how kind it was for Cole and Dylan Sprouse to agree to do "Suite Life on Deck" so all the cast and crew that didn't have a job lined-up after "Suite Life of Zack & Cody" could still have a job for a few more seasons. all so said other cast/crew could better plan to make savings for when that show ended if they couldn't find another job asap/had another timeline to go find a new job lined-up asap afterwards, bc the Sprouse twins were so grateful for how well this crew and their co-stars took care of them when they were children and wanted to help take care of them back
so, again, shows of the early 2000s and nowadays aren't much better, and Hollywood from before then definitely also didnt have a handle on the right way to film things. plus, now we have streaming making a further muck of things. i wish studio-heads could allow actors (and crew) a fucking steady, sustainable career, jfc
(part 2 ended. next is part 3)
(part 3)
but yeah. so, circumstances for Emily Deschanel's pregnancy were already against the show in terms of what the writers could accomplish. bc, unlike "New Girl" where we have other romances to get absorbed in with Schmidt, Cece, Winston, and Nick when he is outside of Jess; "Bones" doesn't have that as much?? maybe they couldve done something with Sweets/Daisy, Hodgins/Angela, (maybe they couldve introduced Arastoo earlier for Camille or) Camille and Michelle, Booth and Parker and/or Rebecca (but Booth and Rebecca would feel weird bc noooo Booth/Brennan forever, dont maybe tease Booth and his son's bio-mom?), Zack, maybe Angela and her dad??? all of these im shaky on except Zack, bc they kinda did all they reasonably could?? idk how theyd make Michelle relevant to the Jeffersonian since she is just a kid to get the cast equal screentime but without Brennan, they did a LOT as is with the sub-ship of Sweets/Daisy and Angela/Hodgins. i guess id also always love more on Camille and Sweets and Hodgins family backgrounds (even tho Sweets' parents are long-since dead) (im ngl tho, i think Daisy is fine but i dont have an interest in her. i could be fine with going into her backstory more. but id rather not), or about Angela's unnamed mother, i could perhaps see something with Angela and her dad but they cast THE Billy Gibbson as him (if you dont recognize him, he's a rock musician though i know him for his blues rock stuff specifically. he did a lot of solo stuff and was in multiple bands, but his most famous band is probably ZZ Top who was Gibbson made his debut alongside. but dude has an expansive rock legacy from the 70s on) (therefore he was busy with touring and music-making and probably also was $$$ to get when we did see him. thats my theory why we got the quick gag about Hodgins having an Angela tattoo in the desert and all those random "Hodge saw her dad in the distance as he got stalked" shots; instead of that PLUS a confrontation and/or with Hodgins waking up to the tattoo with Angela's dad still there to issue more punishment. idk if it was a "let's pitch him this so it is a guarantee to works with his schedule/within budget" or if it was "well he said no to the og pitch but we can do this absurd hilarity instead since he is able to give us x-amount-of-time" kind of chicken-or-egg situation, but im sure his fame played a part in that one-episode gag specifically). and... i guESS they couldve introduced Aubrey earlier, had him work under Sweets or something (it couldve worked! but i wouldve hated it bc i dont like Aubrey. mostly bc i dont like it when any dead character is quickly replaced, so ill admit it isnt ALL Aubrey's fault.. but also i just didnt like Aubrey himself. plus i find it unreasonable that a museum/the government would be so quick to find a replacement, ive worked a bit in both and had loved ones make careers there, neither re-hire people quickly, they make their current workers overloaded for a year at minimum and THEN re-hire; i wouldve liked Aubrey better if theyd had his debut delayed at least few episodes with "i keep trying to hire someone new for Sweets old position but the higher-ups are dragging their feet!" so i could recoup enough first. or if Sweets never left at all, and Aubrey was just HIS intern or secretary or something they made important, idk, Sweets actor didnt HAVE to leave to go become a director, he couldve directed some episodes or maybe worked in Sweets having a sabbatical again?? i wish Sweet had had stayed until the end). but all of that buys up time. it doesnt excuse Brennan's absence in Booth's cases, it just means Brennan couldve had less scenes Bc We Are Focusing On This Instead. so idk. i dont think they HAD a ton of warning with Emily Deschanel's pregnancy?? thats me assuming things tho. i think the tone of her quote about "idk about the pregnancy plotline for Brennan/Booth either" was just her being surprised they couldnt think of something else or didnt try to edit her pregnancy out. as, if they did have warning, hopefully they couldve used:
● "fuuuuck, i have loose ends out in the jungle i have to go back for, hold up (Brennan is out for a while excuse) (maybe, tangential to that, she could have been doing airport drama for a while with "this flight got cancelled and they put me on a new one for lay-away but now im in CANADA" mayhem of being in different places while she tried to be back in time for a specific event),
● upped a pre-existing dynamic of Brennan's to take prominence (i already discussed why the others wouldnt have worked; they just take up time for Brennan to have less scenes, not explaines Brennan's absence)
(the only Brennan-focused-recurring-character-plotline i could think of even just MAYBE working out was this. i wouldve very much bought Brennan being with her brother for something that resulted in Brennan being on the run with Russel; and then had her absence in the lab/with Booth result in the upped presence of her dad's as he and Booth team-up for a while while they try to figure out Brennan's clues she's leaving. like let them have more of their dynamic and further repair any aspects of that, bc Booth caring for Brennan's dad is an extension of his love for Brennan. plus itd be kinda funny with him potentially going "Lord? When I said I was swearing off women as my partners, that was not an invitation for you to help and also I did nOT MEAN MY WORK PARTNER" in a prayer scene comedy bit in a church (he's praying more bc hes THAT worried abour Brennan) (maybe make a nun or priest a recurring side-character for Booth too. have him go to church a lot to further "show, dont tell" us how worried he is for Brennan by having all his prayers be for Brennan and have people say "Youre at church more than usual"/"Yeah, someone I lov-- know is going through something really awful right now, and... I'm helping in all the ways I can, y'know??" and it would make sense for the church to basically disappear from the show once Brennan returns bc!! well yeah!! Booth is doing his regular once-a-week or however much, i forget how much he went before ngl, bc Brennan is back!!! so obviously the church would be involved less! duh! or maybe have a villain be from the church idk) and have "LET US GO JAM PACK FILMING SCENES WITH BRENNAN AS EMILY" be green-screen and costumes of her in different rented phone-booths, all in extreme close-up to only give limited view of where she is with her brother while she tries to keep Booth informed while also not too informed bc "theyll take you off this case bc of how important you are to me, Booth, and i need you here. i need you and my dad not to be in the dark about this, and i need to keep the FBI in the dark, so this is what i have to do to so the FBI will let you both be as in as you can get with my influence. even if they just think its bait to trace where this call is coming from. i have to go, my time's up")
(but also id feel so bad doing that to Russ bc he just got out of prison, idk. and i have NO CLUE what possibly Russ could need Brennan for so long for, but i think they probably couldve had it made sense with him being like "i dont want to abandon you again" and her issues about being left behind or something as a significant part to help curb the believability of An Actual Reason. idk what tho)
(maybe Loren Dean was too busy at this point?? idk what he was up to back then. maybe things clashed. i wouldve bought a re-casting style "plastic surgery" thing though, long as they made the crime/cause of Russ' running and thinking on "how could plastic surgery have fixed this" believable. bc, with Brennan, they could just be like "Well, I thought it would work maybe! That I could sacrifice some cash and make this work, make the problem go away all by myself, not cause you any trouble! "/"Obviously, it didn't work! If you had told me all this was happening, Russell, AS it was happening, I could've told you that of course that wouldn't work!!" maybe take it a notch further and make Russ a transwoman who, hey, might as well transition while all this is/was going on and gotten feminization facial surgery, idk. maybe Russell just wasn't out yet to Brennan and used "my old voice from before I took vocal training" over phone-calls with Brennan, and then this all happened and "hey sis so i have some news.. and also i need help/for you to run with me for a season" bc they did end up doing one okay episode about trans-binary people ans being as respectful as couldve been expected of the time (...less so that trans-nonbinary episode buT SHHHH as a they/them myself, i like to ignore that episode)
(i duNNO, IM SPIT-BALLING, but even then!! even then!
(part 3 has ended. next is part 4)
(part 4)
how the hell would Brennan make it not being an accessory ans be able to work in the Jeffersonian/with Booth in cases after?? idk. i especially dunno how court-cases in the 2000s worked APPARENTLY bc i saw a re-run of the court-episode where Brennan's expertise was DISMISSED ENTIRELY bc she was seeing a therapist. JUST THAT. i could rant more about that, and i will, in a sec, but after i finish this overall point about the industry. my point here is: i can see why they didnt go with a route like this even if they DID think to involve Russ and Brennan's dad and maybe even a church somehow. the consequences would take a WHILE AND A HALF to resolve and itd take some serious brainstorming to come with "why would Russel involve his sister??" AND hopefully "how can we keep Russel out of prison after this" bc he just got out, let him not go back 🥺)
(and like.. i know i suggested having maybe Zack. but it still wouldnt work for the same court-reasons. but like. i could kinda see Brennan being involved if BOTH Zack and Russel were involved?? maybe Zack and Russell know each other somehow and like "Brennan is a common surname and I assumed any sibling of yours would be named Merit or Justice or something matching with Temperence"/"Your brother didn't use his real name" and that's why Brennan would be involved...??? idk, man. again, i can see why they couldnt go this way if they thought to even GO this way)
● or be like "New Girl" with Megan Fox and insert a new main-cast-but-still-side-character for a while?? a similar "LET US GO JAM PACK FILMING ALL SCENES WITH BRENNAN WHILE EMILY IS STILL HERe okay she's gone so let's do scenes with xyz a new temporary-but-still-important-character" maybe something with a new intern? .....yeah, it'd have to be a new intern, ughh
(and ill be honest with you: idk which interns were of prominence before Brennan's pregnancy except for, OBVIOUSLY, Zack, Arastoo, and Jessica. but i LOVED Finn and Wendell; i really liked Clark, minus a couple of his awkward moments; i liked Fisher, Nigel-Murray, and Starret a lot too)
(i also wouldnt have minded a return of Daisy (tho i like her off-team re-appearances better than when she worked with and annoyed everyone, even tho i thought she was fine enough, i just didnt like everyone else's complaining. that i found annoying and therefore wanted her off the team so everyone else would shut-up since it was clear that the show wouldnt have everyone else Be Less Judgey), Brinkley (who changed to prarie dogs, and i get if they couldnt afford to keep Betty White), The Science Dude (even tho he wasnt an intern.. still loved him so much), Gordon (who was Sweets mentor and not even an intern, but he said he wanted to try new things!!), or Sully (again! new things! but would be weird if that's how he came back))
(i wouldve been okay with them bringing back a changed Rodolfo, Wells, or Sammy. i wouldnt find it believable if Zack could ever come back, that feels a bit as absurd as all of the Jeffersonian tech, and i dont like all the too-futuristic tech lmao)
(if they were to ever add a new intern, id want her to be punk-goth rockhead in giant platform boots who was inspired from Abby of "NCIS" or else have another fat intern be quirky and not-just-parroting-everybody (like Sammy) more inspired by Penelope of "Criminal Minds". either way, id like an eccentric woman p much if they were going to give a new hypothetical intern main-character-y status)
(hypotheticals with bullet points over now)
at any rate. i can see why they didnt pick any of the options they had. i just also think the option they DID PICK was one that STUNK
regardless tho?? most copaganda shows i've watched don't have really good central romances ("NCIS" particularly, every romance that isn't from within the main cast? if that person from the main cast is dating someone not from the team?? probably are a cheater or will die, so said main-character can be single again so they can have their romance be a plot of another season)
(part 4 has now ended. part 5 continuing)
They also did Cam so dirty with those wigs 😭
My favorite way of dealing with a protagonist's pregnancy was Will and Grace, she is sitting or behind something all season, they even wrote in a joke about her being sitting and eating all the time
That AU bar episode was so fire when I watched it in middle school. I loved that shit
Never watched it but I remembered the guy was Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
