hi guys im from arecibo PR im a fan of your videos. i have a welding shop im arecibo and i have a few gates that i made and im not going to use i would like to give it to you for your laundry/cat house. and if you need some help yo make the gates of your new wall. i can show you how to weld so you can do it yourself. buy a cheap mig gasless welder machine that you can use with a generator. let me know if you like the idea. im Josue by the way.
Matt, place rebar out the edge of the driveway slab you are pouring spaced every couple of feet so the next driveway joint has something to connect to. Actually a smooth steel dowel is what they use in hwy construction. Before pouring the adjacent section put grease on the dowels that are sticking out. This allows the concrete to move a little with the expansion and contraction process but will keep your driveway level at the joints. 3000 psi concrete should be used (formula is five 94 lb sacks of Portland cement per cubic yard of concrete). Depending on how long your driveway is I’m betting you will get some help in the end so I’ll keep watching. Pouring/finishing concrete is young man’s work! Pro tip- start at the end of the driveway down the hill and pour back towards the road. You don’t want 80,000lb trucks driving on your new driveway and cracking it. Also a joint should be placed about every 15-20 ft. Make sure the earth is packed good under where you will be pouring concrete. This keeps cracks from forming in the driveway and it saves you money. The ground will compress under the concrete as it’s poured. If ground is not packed it will take more than 4” depth to fill the driveway forms costing you lots more money! Lack of foundation prep work is the biggest mistake DYI folks make. Good luck and keep filming!
Yes he is! Who else could make a whole video on building a concrete wall and keep it interesting? Matt & Kristen can! Keep it up team, we love you and all you do!
I think I would find some large rocks to put in front of the great wall. Someone will undoubtably find a way to run into it with their vehicle. Put plants in between the rocks and be happy.
I vote Uncle Matty UA-cam man of the year !!! Nobody and I mean nobody that I watch work as hard as uncle Matty 💪🏽💪🏽🤜🏽. Also, my favorite UA-cam channel !! Give this man a beer🍺make that two beers 🍻🍻one for his beautiful wife to be ☺️🤗✌🏼😎💯🇺🇸🇺🇸
You should be very, very proud of your accomplishments. Especially when they last a lifetime. In a day and age where "hardwork" is a swear word, it's a breath of fresh air to see someone taking great pride and giving a damn about their environment.
I would just do the fiber mesh and stone on top to keep the stone from sinking into the clay/dirt. (Give yourself a construction drive access) Dont worry about concrete drive until all of the heavy concrete trucks and delivery trucks have finished that phase of the house build. Once the house is done then start your concrete drive from the house towards the road in sections with expansion joints. You do not want your drive first in concrete because the heavy trucks will crack and destroy it. An adequate stone road at a reasonable grade is what you need under your concrete to begin with. The mesh is expensive but if not used, the clay will pump up to the surface of the stone. Good Luck. This phase will have your job title as.."Stoner Steve"
Good afternoon guys!! Juan here. Mi esposa y yo vamos para Puerto Rico, queremos verlos….can we? Lets us know!!! Juan and Iris, we will travel to Cabo Rojo on the tenth of Feb…
Great job on the wall. If you start the driveway watch a couple of you tube videos. In that type of ground you want to use fabric. It comes in 12’x 300 or for ft rolls. The reason is it keeps your limestone from mixing and sinking into the ground as it gets wet. The other reason you want it is you need a stone base under your concrete. This keeps the stone in place and allows drainage under the concrete. It will save you 50% of the stone you will need to build a base for your concrete. There is a lot of videos about it on UA-cam. Good luck I enjoy see your progress each Sunday.
Fred Flintstone and the Python Cowboy all rolled into one. One stop YouTubing plus the best video and editing on YT. Thanks for the safety glasses demonstration Matt. Looking Good GBU!

Hi Matt, Kristen! I would suggest removing bells from the cats because they are in the wild. The collar needs to be such that in sace they are caught in some plant, it snaps off. The bell is the ringer for predators. So usually wild cats are supposed to be fixed and be let without the bells for their own safety.
Matt - Driveway Engineering -- Consider buying surplus military steel landing mats for your driveway. They are pressed steel and lock together end to end. Two rows with the width suitable for your truck would be ideal. Can be moved if required and prevents sinking into mud and prevents great traction for everything from jeeps to tanks to Huey helicopters Should be fine for Casa Grande Matt
Matt & Christen- you guys are living the dream that so many of the rest of us only dream…. BTW loved the little “break” last week you guys took to post a little bit of sailing content - but I’m still totally engrossed with your new homesteading adventure!
Great job on the masonry wall ,, But safety first use a dust mask around concrete and maybe a little higher scaffolding . Glad you had safety glasses when cutting rebar . We all want to see you build the house without accidents . Go Team Go !
Matt, your ability to learn, adapt, apply and produce results is amazing. As a contractor on large projects, my father treasured employees that had your qualities as they were rare in his day, more so today. As to the wall. Take a moment to choose the correct coating (paint, etc.). Exterior stucco walls hold dirt, moisture, mold, etc.and that leads to a rather tacky show. Some coatings don't allow some of the growth or release it easier when washed with a hose.
Thanks for the update on SV Dead Dolphin. You read my mind. My phone wouldn't let me comment recently but we still watch GBU every Sunday. You guys are great.
Matt I love watching you grinde your pashions out. Weather it's boat projects or yalls property. Ya'll keep it up its amazing on so many levels brother!!

I think you're going to need to cap the entire wall, although maybe you're planning on doing it and just didn't say? I think otherwise the open columns will fill with water and ruin your stucco job over time as it leaches out. Plus it would be a great breeding place for mosquitos. The wall is looking great through, nice figuring it out!
Hey Guys, nice wall. I would suggest 4 inch base of half inch line stone for your driveway and compress it. Your driveway will harden over time driving back and fourth over it.
You are probably the hardest working guy I have watched on you tube. Your work ethic is off the charts. The very best of luck in everything you do. Cheers from Austin, TX
You guy's are certainly not afraid of work! When you have completed everything and you get the opportunity to sit back and look at what you have achieved it will be so much sweeter! Awesome work ethic! Congratulations!
One of my favorite things about Sunday is watching SBU! Hey Matt, you are on a blind corner and someone is going to go too fast and crash into your wall. Get some big boulders and set them in front of your wall.
I love how you answer all the comments in advance Matt. You know your audience. Enjoying watching the old school hard way as well, as long as it's you doing it. Great video and music, as always...
Christen you’ve done a great job on building that block wall! Matt o you have the ability to do whatever you decide to take on, not to mention the knowledge you obtain by doing it!
Guys, I’m enjoying watching the weekly project update; not as much fun as boat life from our perspective, but you are working towards a long term goal. I wish that over engineered fence wall was part of your home, but I know it was for practice. Since you have a Quikrete manufacturing plant on the island, I suggest you look into the Quikrete Quikwall product. This is a fiber reinforced surface bonding cement 50 lb bag you just add water to. With this product you can pour your footing and dry stack your CMU’s. You then trowel a 1/8” coating on each side of the block, 50 sq ft per bag. This gives you a stronger wall than the mortar set wall you are building and gives you a stucco finish that is water resistant in one step. You can core fill as you did on your fence wall, but it can save a lot of labor. Just as suggestion, a spec data sheet will be on the Quikrete website.
lol great video. Reading the comments and realizing that if you bought everything everyone was suggesting, you’ll have bought another house worth of things!
Hello, I don't know if you are going to read this but I give you some advice, "keep the cement mixer running constantly, and when loading the cement buckets too! This will generate a constant flow that you can master while tilting the machine over the edge" they must do it without fear of error, getting used to the action takes a few minutes, it doesn't matter if at first something falls out, you will master it quickly I promise. WATCH YOUR BACK WHEN MOVING THE CUBES! Otherwise in a few months you will be paying for the carelessness. Greetings from Argentina and good job!
My house was build on ‘51 and the block is all hollow. 15” block for basement 12” for walls. When they did some modification to the block wall garage they just put a ‘glob’ of concrete around the rebar as they layer each layer. Block walls do not need filling with concrete. Cheers Warren
Great job on your fortress walll. Keep your Queen safe !! Hey, I raised a baby iguana into a 6' monster like Matt caught, he was my favorite pet. He rode on my back while I biked around Tampa , and later Atlanta Ga. He roamed freely, in and out through a doggy door, sleeping in the bushes outside during the day when I was working, and would scramble down to greet me like any pet does . He loved pizza , even though greens were his diet, and was a very colorful local oddity. I would take him to the library, on my bicycle, so the kids could pet him and see reptiles up close. Dino had a personality, much like a cat, preferred one person (me) but tolerated people well, especially kids. This was long ago , in the 90's, before iguanas became a nuisance pest.
Matt and Kristen, the wall looks great! I think you should just paint it with a concrete sealant paint and grow vines up the wall - preferably something with a waxy leaf to deflect water and provide habitat for birds and other small wildlife.
That's a beautiful wall Matt, and I agree with Matt on the spider's, they keep some of the pests away. Much love you too, I think it's great what you're doing.🍻
On the driveway, make sure it is shaped like a tent with the tip in the center and gutter's on either side so all the rain goes off into the gutter or water catch if you decide to build one. Utilize that free energy of the long slope in SOME way. Cute kitten's
Looking good guys. Quick advice about your small mixer. Get a board under the mixer tip out all your mixes onto it with mixer running. Empties out quick. Then spade into buckets. Don't keep getting cement on your hands you'll get alkaline burns, you'll get dermatitis. Amazing place you've got. Thanks
Hey Matt, get a 4.5-inch diamond wheel for the angle grinder. That would easily score or even cut the block and make for some clean lines. The wheel you used to cut the rebar would have likely done the job in a pinch for a couple of blocks.
I love what you guys are doing. I am a builder, but I can tell you by experience that it is love that builds a house and hard work. Enjoy what you’re doing. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be what you want the most beautiful homes in the world aren’t perfect but they are what people want a home for them and their families may God continue to bless you both and keep you safe in Jesus name.
I trick I learned when doing a grout filled wall is to use your hose to run some water down the inside of the blockwork before pouring the grout in, makes it slide down so much more easily
Love watching Matt learn a new trade, and the last part of video shows when he expertly chips the concrete blocks as any I have seen. If you are stucco the outside , cuts dont matter. I watch this you tube channel Project Portugal. And Nick is the guy for anything! Please add Project Portugal to. Your you tube watches, he has built so much by concrete bricks, stone work, stucco, etc and has an amazing art for it. Helps all the locals, etc. Plus him and Andrea are adorable like you two.❤❤
Love you guys, my wife and I are looking to move to puerto Rico in the near future, and we love to watch your channel. Maybe we ill come across some day ❤ Matt makes us laugh, and the iguana feed it to the cats 🐈 😅
As we say here in Venezuela: “Me quito el sombrero “ Absolutely you are doing things the right way. First you learn and then you do it the professional way. The dessert look for the landscaping is going to look amazing there. Good choice. Great job guys. Keep it up. Love and be safe!😘🤗🌼🇻🇪
Matt, of course you can do the driveway or any other project you two think up. Why? Because you try. And so often when people try to do things, they amaze themselves and actually do it and it turns out very nice... Thumbs Up to you two for doing things even when you have never done them before. That is how we all learn new things... As for wire or rebar sections of the drive way. Just use the rebar or whatever you decide to use in the concrete and leave a good amount hanging out one section to use in the connecting section when you get ready. No reason that wouldn't work...
Hey Matt, build yourself a V funnel by connecting two boards with a gap in between with the same size of that inner block hole- makes filling the blocks much easier and faster - anyway good work man !
A dream & hard work builds a great life! A small suggestion (just in case) - As you fill each column - tap the block to release any trapped air (so no voids)
Never seen those blocks filled with cement before that wall should withstand whatever a hurricane throws at it good job guys cheers from Australia !! You could stone pitch the roadside of wall with riverstones from down below
If you screw a block of wood by the base of the bucket, you will have a handle to grab while pouring the cement. I saw this trick on a video of hard working men who fill post holes for fences. Good work on your new adventure of building your homestead. ❤❤❤
I totally love you guys! Been watching since sailing. I’ve traveled your paths as well! Matt you’re amazing with your personality, work ethic, humor, positive outlook, and willingness to do the work even if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing!😁 Question: where are your gloves?? I never see you working with gloves and maybe it’s time to protect your hands?🤷♀️Be gentle with them!🙂 Kristen is beautiful as well, adorable, sweet and so talented with the UA-cam videos! Drone shots, video are amazing! You’re such a loyal partner. Patient and understanding with Matt’s ideas..I admire that! Bottom line, I enjoy seeing partners work together to create something beautiful for you both. Until next time..Carry on, be safe and God Bless! ❤🙏🏼
You two are both doing great, can’t wait to hear about your future plans on your wedding and new arrival. My guess is that the house will have to wait, time is flying. Great job on the wall Cdn. Dave
Tap both sides of the blocks with a rubber mallet to help the cream bond to the block. You should ram the rebar in each cell to avoid air pockets. Now is the time to buy a compact tractor loader and box scraper or a skid steer..
Before you pour your drive way you should bring in 4"-6" of road base on top of your soil. Road base is 3/4" rock and sand. Laid out and compacted will give you a stable base to pour your concrete on. You'll have fewer cracks.
Hi Matt love you two, just one thing that concrete looks very strong you only want 1 bag of cement to 4 bags of aggregate and fill the entire wall you don,t want the concrete stronger than the blocks. good luck keep up the good work.
Matt to save on concrete use stones from the soil you dug up and from around your land and do it in layers pour some stones in then concrete and repeat, it will be good enough for the purpose of the wall.
Glad that you're such a motivated worker. Nice to be young and strong! Sure saves on the gym membership. I applaud your efforts Concrete Carlton. That mixer was certianly a Godsend! I woulda definitely went the pump truck route. As Always, May God Bless you and yours!
If you're pouring a driveway you will have to dig down and put a layer of gravel down and compact it, then lay your wire. When you pour the next part you need to drill into what is already poured and insert some Rebar to attach the two sections together, and so on until you're done.

I would just do the fiber mesh and stone on top to keep the stone from sinking into the clay/dirt. Once the house is done then start your concrete drive from the house towards the road in sections with expansion joints. Really enjoying you guys. Keep it up as I live vicariously through you 2
From Larry Laminato 2 Concrete Carlton, mad skills, Matt! Looking good! Thanx 4 sharing! 👍❤️
Nobody can make a wheelbarrow filling up with dirt more entertainin to watch than Matt & Kristen. You got this! 🌴😎
You guys are amazing I get tired just watching you work
MATT IT ALL LOOKS GOOD BUT I WOULD OF RENTED A Concrete Vibrating Power Tool for the wall, rock on brother. Things are looking great there.
Great video Matt and Kristen
You can go into contracting! That wall is so well built and neat!🆒😎👍!
Never seen those blocks filled with cement before that wall should withstand whatever a hurricane throws at it good job guys cheers from Australia !! You could stone pitch the roadside of wall with riverstones from down below
if you were interested in salvaging the front building, cleaning it with a beech mix of between 3-5% sodium hyper chlorite would do absolute wonders
Love watching the likes go up as I watch you guys work so hard. Love the cacti.
I never see you working with gloves and maybe it’s time to protect your hands?🤷♀️Be gentle with them!🙂
Kristen is beautiful as well, adorable, sweet and so talented with the UA-cam videos! Drone shots, video are amazing! You’re such a loyal partner. Patient and understanding with Matt’s ideas..I admire that! Bottom line, I enjoy seeing partners work together to create something beautiful for you both. Until next time..Carry on, be safe and God Bless! ❤🙏🏼
well done with cat bells!!!!.......PLUS, you actually look like you know what you're doing as an 'albanil' (The Wall looks fabulous!
We watch your videos with great pleasure. I admire the tremendous hard work and tenacity. My regards to you.👍👍👍👍👍
Much respect for you, Matt at how fast you have picked up laying block. Not an esay skill.
You two are both doing great, can’t wait to hear about your future plans on your wedding and new arrival. My guess is that the house will have to wait, time is flying.
Great job on the wall
Cdn. Dave
Matty the mason should be proud. You are doing a fine job!!
Matt you need one more cat....Bobcat skid loader...hey Christmas is coming ;)
We're looking into machinery, but goodness even a small one is 30grand
Maybe you can get some income from renting the boat
Great Job on the wall-!- Can't wait tonsee what's coming next-!-!- 😼
You two make a great team. Genuinely amazing videos.
Matt to save on concrete use stones from the soil you dug up and from around your land and do it in layers pour some stones in then concrete and repeat, it will be good enough for the purpose of the wall.
Thanks!
Thank you!!
