Great videos. Keep them coming. I'm glad to see real world tests of EV technology for those of us living in cold weather climates. It shows to me that the technology isn't quite there yet for family travel in cold weather climates. Hopefully the car manufacturers and those building the charging infrastructure are also watching these videos from you and the videos from @OutofSpecReviews. We need an honest assesment of what the current EV status in throughout the U.S. It definitely is an eye opener for those of us considering on purchasing an EV.
Thanks. Your misfortune will help me straight, gas, or hybrids for me. I currently have a 2022 maverick hybrid and love it. I regularly get 40-55 mpg in town and I do not have to worry about charging the battery or sitting there for 1-2 hours each time I charge it. Anyway, thanks for the content. Keep it coming
Thanks for showing the real world range in the winter. My results in southern Maryland are much better with this February the warmest on record. EA is just flat out terrible! My experience with them so far is 50% working stations. Is EVgo any better?
I always draft the trucks when its getting tight on range. It definitely helps. So much so that going a bit faster drafting I've found to be more efficient than a bit slower without drafting.
Let’s give Ford engineers a little more credit. At 2deg, an ambient-air heat pump would be practically useless. A Tesla Octovalve system and heat pump could help, by harvesting heat rejected by the motors for heating the interior air (but at 2deg, all bets are off, and resistance heating is the only effective way to heat the Cathedral cabin air). Oh, and remember from thermodynamics class: resistance heating is 100% efficient, in that 100% of the electrical energy from the battery is converted to heat energy in the cabin air.
One of the recent OTA updates was supposed to include preconditioning if you are using the Ford routing to a charger. I wonder if that was why you battery temperature came up to normal while you were driving.
February 1st I drove from Northern Illinois to Kansas City when the outside temperature was -2°F. I hit two frozen gas pumps on the way, triggering an alert on my CC and spent 30 minutes getting my CC back. Then I-80 was closed for an accident and another 30 minutes was spent in a detour. I complained about my trip when I made it home. Good grief, if I had a day like yours that Lighning would have been left at the next dealership and I'd have driven off in something else. Julie (spouse of W0JD)
So what do you do if there is no Greg? Truck rental for the mileage/time necessary to avoid interrupting your work would be a huge expense, right? I think this constitutes not just an inconvenience but a complete failure for F150 cold weather performance and Electrify America.
I’m going to keep burning fossil fuels until they get EV’s figured out. 👍 I’m not hunting battery chargers! I drive 550 miles per tank full!!! I take a 10 minute break fill back up and go another 550 miles if I want to but usually I’m too tired !😂🤣
I have a Tesla Model 3 but I fully understand your viewpoint. In fact, if everyone decided to buy an electric vehicle within the next 2-3 years, it would be an absolute disaster. Dave's video clearly demonstrates that Infrastructure development is already well behind EV adoption. The bright side and the advantage to my Model 3 is that most all of my driving is close to home. I have never taken it on a road trip so all my charging is done at home overnight. I am able to wake up every morning with a fully charged vehicle in my garage waiting to start the day. And the $18 I spent over the last 30 days for electricity has a gas equivalency of about $74 in my area.
@@somemovingpictures very cool! I’m working at a gas turbine power plant right now rebuilding two GE gas turbines. Getting ready to roll over to another unit and rebuild another two GE gas turbines. One of my coworkers has a new Ford mustang E That thing is bad to the bone !!! He works at a lot of power plants nuclear and gas turbine. He drives the car to the job site and charges for free drives home and back to work and plugs in again every day at work that thing is plugged in driving back-and-forth for free!! he has the perfect scenario figured out plus at home. He has a battery bank and solar panels on the roof of his house to charge for free at home. the infrastructure is not ready for everyone to buy agree totally. I don’t know if I’ll ever buy one. I’m Going to retire in a couple years and I’m heading to Mexico. I probably won’t need an EV down there. I’ll be back in the states for a couple months during the summer otherwise I’m spending my retirement dollar in Mexico 👍
Dave unfortunately when the temps get that cold even if there was a heat pump it's COP (efficiency) is so low that it doesn't actually save that much, if any, electricity (thus Range) but for folks where it only gets down to 20-40 degrees it would be great, but unfortunately you can't design a truck for only a small swath of the country and people up north would then be paying for something in the truck that wasn't very useful for them and I'm guessing it would add a considerable amount to the cost of the truck given how big the cabin is. You could do Drive focused heat and bring blankets for the passengers.
Dave, could you mention the interior lights you installed in your Tesla. Bought some junk and & the Tesla puddle lights didn't fit. Also the footwell lights were poor quality 😢.
you are lucky your friend Greg likes in the area and swapped trucks with you. shame Ford has not switched to heat pumps guess they are in too big of a hurry to get trucks on the road with old heating systems that drain the battery rather than using newer heat pumps that are much more efficient. have a safe trip. hope you recap the amount of time you spent sitting at charging stations.
The Lightning has a cap of 162 kW charging, so it can make use of faster than 150 for a time. Perfectly kosher as long as you’re getting that higher speed. Also totally fine in the middle of nowheresville with no other EVs charging. I’m sure if a Taycan or Ioniq5 rolled up they would have moved.
Why would I trade my 600 mile range diesel RAM 1500 for a truck that I have to constantly worry about range? Maybe in 5 or more years IF they ever perfect this EV technology but not now.
Water vapor in the air--Cherokee power plant in Commerce City. That is indeed just steam. It's been making those clouds since 1968 when it was built. I need to download this video and watch it anytime I get the urge to buy an electric car. I live in Wyoming, and take long road trips fairly regularly. I have no desire to suffer through the hassles of electric cars. Turning off the heat so you can stretch out the range a few miles, frosting the inside of your windshield in the process? Am I the only one who finds that unacceptable?
Driving with the hvac off is risky, visibility was very poor and you want some comfort when driving. it's another indicator that the f150 lightning's battery efficiency is inadequate especially for cold conditions and could do with another 50% of range imo. Its a big fat fail for the F150!! Dump it Dave.... Don't worry the Cybertruck is coming!
Wyoming is NOT committed to EVs and charging infrastructure per recent State Legislation being considered to ban all EV sales in WY in 10 years. Real smart cowboy thinking there. Must want to support the WY oil and gas industry at all costs.
Guess Kyle Conner is right about the state of EA traveling in a non Tesla vehicle due to lack and reliable ccs chargers. May help when Tesla opens up their chargers. As a fellow ham I follow all your videos. Be safe and look forward to your next video. 7:00 est.
I respect what you're doing But there's no way I would shut the heat off in the winter or turn the AC off in the summer And the range is terrible and the amount of time it takes to sit there and do nothing while it charges I wouldn't have time to sit around for hours waiting for an EV to charge I would rather go to the gas station spend 5 minutes filling up and back on the road And this is one of the big reasons I would never ever buy an EV
So, Tesla haters who want an EV should heed this warning, It is indeed "The Superchargers Stupid". With the new agreement to open some Tesla Superchargers to CCS EV's, that maywell save Ford's butt. More efficient heating/cooling would also help. Must be embarrassing for big auto to be constantly schooled by Tesla on how to make a non-fossil fueled, energy efficient vehicle. Back to the drawing board boys...
To keep windows from fogging i set my temp to 60 degrees in winter. This may use less energy than intermediatly turning it on.
That’s an amazing trip, Dave. One of the best “real world” tests I’ve seen! Looking forward to your warmer months trips in it.

Wow good data glad you guys are safe keep your coat on Dave.
Thanks for this series Dave. Perhaps by next winter there will be some CCS chargers on this route.
EA chargers are seriously bad.Im glad we got so many other options here in Norway.

I've gotten the active air dam error before. It seems to go away fairly quickly. I suspect the louvers didn't open fast enough when it was told to.
I may never use my lightning for traveling, I bought it to only use locally and charge at home.
Thanks for showing the challenges of charging. 90 minutes to charge during a road trip is an obstacle to greater utilization of ev technology.

The Wyoming part is always my favorite part of the videos. What do you do up there? Do you own a ranch or something?

Cold certainly effects truck and chargers.
Curious, "Did you precondition the battery in the morning before you started your trip today?"
Time to sell the lightning or never use it on road trips to Tesla opens up the superchargers

What was the cost per mile using the Lightning?
Good videos but which would you prefer to travel in the tesla or the lightning. Still undecided which to buy
I hear Tesla will take wind speeds into consideration when estimating range remaining. Does Ford do this?
Was finding out there was no CCS chargers a surprise? Why didn't you just go in your model X?
you are lucky your friend Greg likes in the area and swapped trucks with you. shame Ford has not switched to heat pumps guess they are in too big of a hurry to get trucks on the road with old heating systems that drain the battery rather than using newer heat pumps that are much more efficient. have a safe trip. hope you recap the amount of time you spent sitting at charging stations.
Glad you made it ok young Men
Thanks for sharing. Extended range or standard?
Great experiment. No one should buy a Lightning. Or use Electrify America. The option is to stay above 60F outside temps.
Another great video. Normally, it’s not considered kosher to use your 150kw in a 350 kw charger. But it was desperate.

YOu quit dong the destination SOC when you do your energy checks. ??
I can’t believe you had to swap trucks.
can you imagine pulling a significant weight trailer with the lightning in the conditions Dave is driving. Good Luck with that.
My f250 got 50% range when towing, it’s diesel with 5-8 mpg. The motive power, fossil fuel or electric makes no difference it physics

This seems like punishment. Would the tesla model X trip be more comfortable
Electric F150 production shut down for the second week. Truck fire at factory., More trouble at Ford, huge shocker.

what a joke don't see why any one would want one put some weight in it and will be even worse off for range
Hey I am getting commercials...😢

What a ridiculous waste of time…. Green energy is not perfected yet… Great revelation of current technology and infrastructure… Thanks for the effort

If you lease a Tesla Model 3 who gets the 7500 dollar tax credit........Elon Musk or the leasee ??
I hope I can see you when you are back in wyoming. let me know if you don't know how to contact me, and I will send you my email
