Always a pleasure. I for one appreciate the “real” world view of how much to expect to get done. UA-cam is full of overly edited, make you feel inadequate, 30 minute videos of guys getting a week’s worth of work done… I like some realism.

One trick I learned this year is to also run butyl tape across tops of stringers to keep moisture from getting between your decking and the stringers and getting trapped there and rotting
Doesn't work. Stop repeating this myth.
It's inferior building practice and has the opposite intended effect.
When you install the square cut ends, router them to match the factory profile. Also, should put rubber flashing on top of joists. Serves two purposes, protects joists from water rotting them and also provides a bit of camo looking from above to not see the joists. Nice cabin, I've always dreamed of one for retirement but now I'm fully set on the barndominium!!

@wranglerstar Gracie Vycor comes in a 3 or 6" width for window flashing and we'll just cut into strips for the thinner joists. Also, take that blocking and pitch it slightly down towards the cabin and it'll let water run off. The blocking is thick enough that you'll still have enough nailer even tilted.
Wrap the blocking before you install it too, sorry a lot of details I've gotten in my head!!!

If you run your boards wild, you can come back with a track saw and cut the boards to fit the picture frame.
You can use a round over bit on the ends to make a nice smooth finish for your feet.
Also corner edge fastening lets the wood shine and no popped screws as the wood dries.
The Picture Frame style gives it an extra touch of quality. You will be happy to see it every time you step onto that porch for many years to come. The temporary plywood decking can be a protective covering during construction. Happy VidCon. Cheers.
Plastic decking is HOT when in the sun. As a carpenter, I think cedar is the best if you aren't going to beat on your deck like have tons of stones on your shoes and such. It is naturally rot-resistant, lightweight, and not very dense, so it doesn't hold in the heat. Just my 2 cents, which is probably all it is worth.

I had some of the first generation plastic decking at my lake house and man does that stuff get scorching hot during the summer! Had to hose the sucker down before having company over.
Can't stand Trex, and all of the other recycled plastic decking. My current deck is Cumaru. Hard as hell, dense, will out live me, beautiful color, barefoot surface, and a class a fire rating. Ipe and other Brazilian hardwoods are similar in quality.

@@davidperalta5280 All those ironwoods are the best choice for decking, dense as all hell. just super pricey. If anyone reading this is considering doing a DIY deck with any type of ironwood i.e. Ipe, Cumaru, etc please wear a respirator. The dust particles from most ironwoods can be toxic and at very least can cause a negative respiratory reaction. That said the fact that they have a Class A fire rating (aka the same as concrete and steel) speaks for itself in terms of longevity.

I have just finished an exterior door's architrave all done from scratch based on rough sawn lumber: 3 days in and it will require an extra few hours (4th day). of tweaking so that I am finally satisfied with it... built with time and patience and a source of pleasure ☘

I build decks for a living in Nova Scotia (as about as far east as you can get haha) that cedar looks awesome to work with. We install a lot of composite decking and it does not give me the “fizz” Nice miter’s by the way. 👌🏼
Loved the technique of hand-turning the drill to get the screw below flush.
I'm going to incorporate that. So much care goes into his movements.

I like to put flashing tape on top of my floor joists on a deck, which makes them much more rot-resistant.

You don't want aluminum flashing in contact with any pressure treated lumber including the top of your posts. It will cause the aluminum to corrode and bleed onto your wood.

Love from Sweden! When I build decks like this I usually put the boards first and then the border. That way I can put the deck down and then take my track saw to cut the deck straight. Then the transition from border to deck looks better in my opinion!

Beautiful work, proho! One literally "magic" thing I've discovered over the years is called copper naphthenate if you're really looking to preserve end cut wood of any kind for many many years. Highly recommend it for situations like you have with the perimeter plywood end cuts where flashing alone will tend to only draw water under by capillary action and trapping it. Copper naphthenate is widely used in the utility pole and commercial fence post industries.

Run all deck boards a litlle wild, then come back with track saw to clean it up. Then border it. Leaves you with perfect gapping. You're welcome.
Always mark your spacer with the side your are using.
I'm a Carpenter by trade and a General Contractor. On all your joists you should add some sort of a deck joist tape to protect the tops of the joists. I tend to use some sort of a thicker tar tape used in window flashing and cover the top of the wood and drape over the edges. (for a 1.5" joist i would cut the tape around 3"). What this does is when you put your decking on top of it, with proper spacing, it makes the top of the joists appear black. this helps make the end product looks nicer as well as help not only protect the surface of the wood but help seal the screw holes of the decking. PLEASE READ!!!
Secondary thought and suggestion I think you would like! For the boards inside the picture frame add the same round over, with a router, as the side lengths of your decking to the cut ends that die into your border (I believe the round-over should be 1/4" or 3/8"). It will take the deck to another level! I also appreciate the consistency of screw spacing throughout. You can have beautiful miters, decking material, and even hidden screw heads with plugs but screw spacing is very important for a quality deck's finish look.

Great idea. It was common practice I Australia for years to use a lose plastic damp course flashing on joists and it was a disaster as the water would sit underneath the flashing and rot the joists even faster. A tar or similar flashing tape works much better
Nah, that's one of those bullshit building myths that sounds logical but is actually inferior building practice.
Water gets under the tape and sits. When enough water is on a deck to be of concern; thin tape on top of the wood doesn't keep it dry, it just lengthens the drying time.
If the tape was like 300mm wide and went halfway down the joint and you somehow avoided penetrations in it with screws/nails, it might work.
Otherwise, no. Don't use tape on your deck. Waste of time and doesn't benefit you. Use tar paint if you're that concerned.
I don’t know if it matters, but you can lay your center deck boards down first, then use your track saw to cut off the ends and lay in your picture frame after. It makes it pretty nice.
It is good to see the entire process like this.
The highly edited content out there can give a false impression about how long it takes to do things properly.

I have usually done the frame after the deck boards. I can then use the track saw to cut the deck boards perfectly.

If you have one, use a screw impact driver to drive in long wood screws. If you don't have one, get one. Makes things a million times simpler. Especially in odd angles.
You should definitely put another joist under the PT backing you put in. That will prevent any sagging or flexing where your 20’ deck boards butt against your boarder. I really enjoying watching your cozy cabin build. Looking great!👍🏻

Nice touches on the details, setting up to deck the porch! Is that WRC or Port Ordford (Yellow) Cedar? I really like the increased durability of the Port Orford Cedar. Sometimes it is harder to source though. Great job overall, and any WS production is great no matter how long or short, or the content, it is always top shelf!
I haven’t seen flashing on a deck like that, but we recently had ours done and they covered the top of the joists with sticky flashing tape. Keeping the water off the top of them seems to eliminate most of the rot issues.

Up here in the Pacific Northwest, I would recommend putting some sort of membrane on joist of the deck just to protect it from rot. Out here even treated stuff rots away. But basically the membrane would stop the water from sitting on the wood over the years
you are building on one of the coolest things a man can own.. There is NO RUSH here sir. The out sider channel did an amazing cabin and it took him a good long time to get it done. But the out come is BREATH TAKING. The front door alone was a 2 or 3 part video. Love your hard work brother.
we drill holes through the corners of the miters and glue dowels in to keep them level and strong instead of screw or nails
Some of us ladies enjoy you prescision of work I woodworked with some disabled men on a program making toys,doll houses,rocking horses,cupboards,repairing,draws for elderly people in unit homes simple things,I went to our local school took a woodwork class in the evenings to learn how to use a router,drills power saws,no funding for this equipment,bought my own,we had a workshop in one town with an instructor 2days 2 days in back of a health center first project was to construct a work bench we bought to our health center and put together before that we had a kitchen table the men were satisfied we could use without worring about any damage the program lasted 6 years.thats why I enjoy watching you build we could only work with pine and plywood. Your flashing should have included a “drip-edge” in several different locations around your building and deck. I would always use hemmed, drip edges. Much stronger, less chance of destruction and the rounded edges virtually eliminate any chance of someone getting cut in the future. Your flat flashing will just allow water to run down it and onto the wood. Not so good. Even sealers, stains or paint will be affected in the long run. You can get some drip edge flashing made by a local sheet metal shop. Matching color/material as your existing flashing will extend the life of all your exterior wood and minimize upkeep and maintenance. Fantastic cabin, coming along nicely. 👏🙏✌️

Great job. May I make a suggestion? A chemical bond in the flashing will prevent and ingress at the joints. QUAD makes the absolute best and you can get it in brown, white and clear

If you run a hand saw through that not-quite-right miter, it will match perfectly without having to measure. That said, every craftsman does something differently. There's no right or wrong way as long as it's strong and pretty. Thanks for allowing me to pick my nits here. :D

There is a jig similar to the Kreg’s. It allows you to space the boards while hiding the screws! Brilliant
Your blocking needs to be supported by a 2x6 on it edge under it.... Your decking is now only supported by essentially a 1x1 on the outside edges.... Look it at and think about it for a second... Also, the flashing its not really needed... A simple bead of silicone on the top edge of the trim board that your going to slide up under that flashing would have done the same thing... I think its going to look odd having that flashing showing on the top tread of your stairs...
Whenever I see your side-by-side I have a chuckle because, to me, the rims look like the WS logo. That’s some true style!

He can travel legally with his Glock 19x while using ten round magazines. Flying with a gun is easy. Maybe he can’t carry on the streets there, but having a 10 round G19x on the hotel nightstand makes me feel a lot better in places like that.

It truly amazes me watching him build anything. Just like cutting that backing board and making it fit snug where it literally friction fits.. and he does it quickly. We have seen it unedited before! Dude if I tried that I’d spend like 20 minutes measuring and still completely biff the cuts up and it either wouldn’t fit period or it would be too loose to use. 😂

They sell a special tape for the tops of deck joists to help with water resistance, id consider using it on your blocking at 2:17 since you didn't slope it to allow runoff
Cutting mitres always make me measure 5 times and cut once.
I'm watching this at 11:30a and it's 94 here in central texas. I'm in the middle of staining my tool shed. I look at the weather up where you are and think, perhaps I should move there so I don't melt when working outside. Nice cabin btw. Been watching the build.
Could also use deck tape over that plywood but the metal flashing is a proho touch.
One summer during my college years (1991, 1992) I shaved logs (hand lathe) and helped piece together these custom cabin kits (Meadowlark) in Cheyenne, WY. This was my most physically tasking job I ever worked. I worked lots of construction & roofing to pay my way through college. Good to see they are still around.
instead of flashing use deck tape, its designed specifically for this application.
I like this I’ve done something like that for garden walkways looks cleaner than end grain and where you walk I put aluminium edge to protect it 🙏
I've always been a "good enough" carpenter. Or some may say "a framing carpenter, not a finish carpenter." But after watching this gentleman's work, i have started paying attention to the fine details regardless if they will be seen. It might take longer, but in the end you have something to be proud of. Take pride in your work fellas 💪

FYI. I've placed both miters together, then made one cut. Makes for a perfect match cut. No gaps. You need to compensate for shorting any lengths before you cut. Takes a bit longer but once you've seen perfection ..... Also I placed some biscuits in the joint.

you should use butyl tape on the pressure treated boards so water doesn't sit on top of them. I haven't watched far enough yet to know if you did that or not.
No need to use metal flashing for the joists or outside board. There is joist tape which you wrap the top of your joists. You don’t see if from the side as you will hide from view with trim. But it’s far easier to work with than metal.

As a carpenter (of about 14 years) that's a great deal of faith that the deck frame is perfectly square... I've seen plenty of 43.5, 44, 46 degree miters, etc - even on stuff I helped frame! Sometimes it's mistakes, more often I think it's just the nature of trying for perfection in an imperfect world. You can definitely get close, but do enough trim and you'll learn there's basically nothing built PERFECTLY square, level, or plumb - and there never has been.
