This recording was in fact made in 1971; Henderson reprised her starring role in the national tour from a decade earlier and performed the song as the opening intro for the 1971 Tony Awards telecast.
she was also the last maria on broadwy in like 1962. remember she was in fanny in 1950. oh and for pure cheese listen to petulah clarks sound of music 1981 cast recording.....very downstage cross.....
No...she wasn't. She was never in the Broadway cast of TSOM. But she DID "perform" the role of Maria on Broadway once...the First National Tour Cast of 1961 took over the Lunt Fontanne for one night (day?) in a special performance...for industry people, family, friends, maybe???
"I am qualified to make a psychiatric evaluation because i have seen Next to Normal... twice.. and i have the CD ..and a bootleg.. but the off-broadway version.. slight changes.." haha love it!!
How appropriate is it that I'm watching this before going to a practice for "The Sound of Music"? Not that I'm Maria or anything (not even a singing role)..... Loved this deconstruction Seth, Florence is a better singer than I thought.
OOOH! Were you a contestant or did you host? This is great stuff---how do you get a hold of something like this! Very funny, Seth. And I remember FH singing on the Brady Bunch (we all had to ask Santa for Mommy's voice back), but then saw her BELTING the crap out of something on someone's variety show later.
Obsessed with your deconstructions! Have you EVAH thought of doing one on...say...The Andrews Sisters. OK, yes, I know....they ain’t B’way. Unless you count “Over Here!” Just saying. It would be AH-mazing to hear your take on them! Pretty pleeeeze...
"That's how we liked endings in the old days....BORING" "....so already it's rude" "Amazing back phrasing!....I mean, TERRIBLE back phrasing!" Love you Seth
Few people are aware that Florence started with a markedly different face; you can see it in early T.V. appearances. It simply is not the face of a star or actress, but of a nice small town or farm girl from Indiana. She took care of THAT quickly, nothing drastic or odd, but definitely a move toward highlighting her beautiful features which had not been much evident.
QAFgenius12 The additional of Cousin Oliver was The Brady Bunch's "Jumping the Shark" moment. They were starting to struggle in the ratings and the kids weren't so young and cute anymore. So, they threw in another cute kid to save the day. Problem is he was more annoying than cute and the show was cancelled. Now, the industry refers to any cute kid brought in to save a show as a "cousin Oliver"
That was just wonderful. An amazing version of the song.
Well done! Loved this video.
This is wonderful.
Rip : Florence Henderson (February 14 1934 - November 24 2016)
Seth, your facial expressions kill me. Love.
"Pushing Boundaries" is my new catch phrase

"She sings it like two steps up from Mary Martin so it's already rude..." haaaaa. I seriously didn't know Florence could do that! Crizazy.
Oh how i wish you'd do Linda Eder

When I wrote about Florence in a book, the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization said Florence starred in the 1961 touring company, not 1971...
BradyNut she toured in ‘61 the recording is from 1971
That is correct. What book did you write??
love it!

She didn't.
'as we say in the business...crazayzy'
@somethingradical Yes. Take your shirt off, Seth!
Sounds like a Regine Velasquez singing "Papa Can you Hear Me" ending.
I still prefer Mary Martin’s voice to Florence Henderson.
