The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

What a great performance! I knew John was a great singer but I'm floored by Florence's fantastic voice! From one of the tribute episodes to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. "People Will Say We're in Love" is from Oklahoma which both Raitt and Henderson starred in nationally in a touring company.

They toured with Barbara Cook as Ado Annie and her husband David Lee Grant as Ali Hakim. But when they opened on
Broadway Curly wasnt play by Raitt who made Pajama Game instead and Curly was played By Raid Bond.

Imagine Florence Henderson John Raitt and Barbara Cook instead of Gordon Mc Rae Shiriey Jones and Gloria Grahame in the Oklahoma movie.
I dont know if it would be better but It would have been different not better not worse different. This performance was st the same time than the Oklahoma movie was made 1955.

@@dianaaljadeff2983 Raitt opened Carousel as Billy Bigelow. When he went to NYC to audition to replace Alfred Drake, Rodgers & Hammerstein said we not only have our Curly, but our Billy. Pajama Game was later.

I met Florence Henderson back in 1967 at the Empire Room of the old Waldorf Astoria in NY. She had tea with me bf her performance that night. I fondly remember her kindness and humility as a young high school kid. That particular night the composer Richard Rogers was in the audience! 😊

Henderson was abround seventeen here. When she told Richard Rodgers her age at her audition, he smild and said "You're a little too old for the part." Laurey is supposed to be 15 or 16, Curly around 19 or 20. Henderson and Rait headed the second US touring company.

For those old enough to remember, the Ed Sullivan Show was well-known for how miscellaneous and varied it was. Take a look at this, then a jazz performance, a juggler, a comedian, and every other thing that got on the program for much of the USA to see and hear.
