Percent chance doesn’t equal percent coverage although it does factor it in. If a storm is on course to hit 50% of your city, there is a 50% chance of rain. The storm could divert to miss the city or divert to cover the city, but the EXPECTED percent coverage is 50%. I saw this on someone who’s watched the news before and nothing wlse
I feel like it has to be a combination of both though. Forecast will always have some uncertainties involved which translate to some probability of certain outcomes. For small regions, it will be more like chance of rain, and for large regions (e.g. extreme scenario the entire continent), it will be more like the percentage of region that is raining.

Not true. If we're assuming that it WILL rain, without a doubt, then the chance of rain varies based on your location. If you are in one of the areas where it is hypothetically guaranteed to rain, then there is a 100% chance of rain. Not 50%.
Obviously, it isn't feasible to tailor weather forecasts to each individual person so they just use the blanket 50% and don't bother going into specifics.
Now I don't have any top secret intel into how meteorologists arrive at this percentage, but in order to get an 'average' chance of rain for a generic resident, one would have to adjust for the population density in each area and so on and so forth. But even then, this average percentage is not really accurate. It's just a generalization.
Sorry this is wrong. Probability of Precipitation (PoP) = C x A. C being confidence of forecaster. A being area expected.
Forecaster is 50% confident that 80% of an area will see rain. PoP = 40% chance of rain.

I just watched a couple glad trash bag commercials, and they have the seam on the outside. And that chatter was right that percent chance and percent area are the same, because you only exist in one place, so no matter what, you only have a 30% chance of seeing rain, regardless of how you interpret it.

But if you think about it, a 30% chance of it raining in your specific area is the exact same as saying there’s a 30% chance of rain. it’s 100% going to rain somewhere in that area, but your odds of being in the area it rains is 30% (I paused right before they discussed it lmao, but I agree)
Where do you live that it's always a 100% chance it's going to rain somewhere in your area when they predict a 30% chance of rain? We can have a 95% chance and still end up with blue skies statewide because wind exists

Where is everyone getting this mis info about percent chance or rain??? 30% chance does NOT mean there is guaranteed rain in 30% of the area... there is a 70% chance there is no rain at all and 30% chance the area gets some rain. Just google it, its so easy to find???
