- This series is all about sharing what other modellers are doing in their workshop. In this episode we'll meet John whose building an RC Slingsby T21 Sedburgh glider, a four metre beauty. I'm sure all kinds of models will be featured over the coming weeks and months (and years!) but above all it's going to be interesting with a laid-back approach. With a bit of luck we'll get to see the finished models, if not at the maiden, then in the air, cheers

Thanks everyone for looking at my T21 and of course your comments. Hopefully there will be a happy
conclusion !
We all hope so John 👍
Thankfully there are people in the world who still build model airplanes
Quite a few as well, thanks to the internet we can still enthuse each other and inspire new enthusiasts 🙂👍
Grab a cup of tea or coffee sit back and enjoy sitting in John's workshop as he talks us through his latest his latest build 🙂👍
Thanks Cliff, really enjoying the series, brilliant Idea, giving us a glimpse into other model-builders workshops and their thinking processes. I have a lot to learn!
Glad you enjoyed it Andrew, thanks for watching and the feedback 🙂👍
Builders have so much in common with one another, and much to learn from one another😊
Well said Jim 👍🙂
Especially if you are a biker too!!
I used to fly these in the air cadets, awesome build, brought back so many memories …
Hi Billy, you're not the first to say this is the comments, I wonder if you knew any of the others?, cheers
What a lovely video....and an awesome model!! Definitely updates on his progress needed! 👍
Thanks Mike, John's a clever chap and he deserves a bit of recognition 👍
We had a t21 glider at south cerney when i was in the ATC in the 70s great gliders. i have plan's for a t32 that i will build sometime in the future .nice workshop thankyou cliff.
Hi Gordon, it seems the T21 was an incredibly popular glider for the ATC, John's workshop is nice and tidy isn't it?
Yes cliff a real man cave i have to work in the attic it's a bit cold this time of year.
John seems like a great fella Cliff. I'm really enjoying the series! That will be quite the glider.
Hi Adam, thank you, she's going to be a real beaut that's for sure and John's a pretty good flyer so she'll be in good hands, cheers
In 2022, I had a flight in an historic T21 - just fabulous, love vintage. Next on my board is a design that won the 1936 Swiss gliding championships at 1/5th scale and 3 metres span. Covering: earlier this year I built a control line stunt trainer (Mercury Cobra, 50's design) and covered the wings in nylon. This adds a lot of strength for not much weight......(not sure if you can get clear though). I'll try it on the fin of my big glider and see how I get on. Great project you have there !
What a great experience Dave, what's the 3m glider you're building? This model, built by fellow club member has maidened now, she's a lovely flyer. Do you follow Mark Croucher?, in this video he shows how he uses dress lining material to get results similar to nylon ua-cam.com/video/cezx4jrEF7Y/v-deo.htmlsi=KRNgrDZm7oZF9aUx, 🙂
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes Its a Spalinger S18-2/3 from a Radio Modeller plan. Cliff Evans and Justin from Bristol made a few design changes and made me a laser cut kit. I've invested in a set of electric brakes (French I think) plus a set of construction jigs drawn for me. Thanks for the link. As I'm not a great fan of film covering, I'm always interested in alternatives. We are blessed with many good slopes in the Stroud area too !
@@davecooper5951Sounds like a fabulous build Dave, enjoy 🙂
Very nice.
Spring is coming. I have a small electric L 19 Birddog I built in November & December that's been waiting for warm weather for its trim flights, but sailplanes are indeed my favorite.
Birddog, a classic aeroplane, roll on Spring 🙂👍
Most enjoyable video Cliff. Some great tips for building my Super Sinbad. Used to fly in Sedberghs with the ATC. Don't know how they stayed up, they were so heavy.😂
Just lovely, I remember flying those gliders at Weston super mare with the ATC . And later flying a model of the same glider at crooks peak. Just wish we had hills here in southern Ontario
Hills certainly are lovely to soar on but this one will probably go up on the aerotow, it's a big model to lug to the top of a steep Hill 👍
Hi there. I learned how to fly a glider in a Sedbregh, at RAF Sealand, around 1968 when I was in the Air Cadets!
Great memory Nick, did you pursue the sport?
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes No, my flying career as a pilot ended when I left the ATC. Since then I have flown in RN Seakings with the Sea Cadets a few light aircraft and once on an airliner, a 737 I think, which I wasn't keen on. I preferred the 50 year old Seaking!
@@nickclarke587The older the ship the more character they have 👍
Awesome job so far John, thanks for allowing us into your workshop!.
John will read all the lovely comments you never know it might spur him on to finish it early 😁👍
Really amazing. I like how you say that anything can fly. I am still to get to that level. For sure working the wood is really the best part of it. Thank you for putting it together and for sharing!
Thanks Andrew, you've had some success, persistence pays off!
Great part 2 it is good to see what another people are building thanks for sharing 👍 cliff
Thanks Tunny, it is good to see isn't it, a lot of modellers work in isolation and it's good to know we're not alone in our workshops 👍 ps John tidied his bench before I arrived 😁
Nice pair of guys there across the pond. Very nice build.
Thanks for commenting 🙂👍
Thanks Cliff. Enjoyed that.
Cheers David, it's nice that we know the individuals as well 🙂👍
lovely video cliff , very nice man too , all the best success to John with his maiden flight, thanks again cliff for your videos, 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Tony, we'll see more of the build Ucam sure and definitely the maiden, cheers 👍
John for covering you may want to check out Mark Croucher's use of dress lining that has worked great for his builds. It's light, tough, and cost less than covering. Excellent building skills. Cliff great series, well done Sir. Jeff in LA USA
Hi Jeff, we did actually discuss Mark's method afterwards but then John showed me a covering sample which he may well end up using 🤔👍
Ahh, so this is the Balsa Basher duo Cliff!! and as someone else mentioned below, we do share much in common. Looking forward to your build videos lads!
This is a beautiful build. And very informative too.
Well you certainly can't beat working with balsa George, watch out for at least one more update 👍🙂
@@geoffwhiles8223 I think the finished model is going to be more than beautiful, it's going to be stunning 👍
Great video Cliff, nice cups 😁. Thats a huge glider, hope you show the maiden. 🫡
I hope so too Chris, she'll be towed up on a lovely summer day👍
Really enjoyed watching the video thank you. Beautiful glider 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it, she's going to look fantastic, cheers
Nice one cliff gag the star of the show so you can talk like it the sedburgh brings back memories as an air cadet in the 70s learning to glide at RAF Debden . 4 flights in one day crack on
Yes a chocolate biscuit at just the right moment pays dividends Barry, great story as well 🙂👍
fantastic work.....
Thanks Rave, I'll be filming a follow-up with John soon 👍
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes keep us updated... today we hardly get to see such a amazing work from the current generation...
U r the #1 balsa builder i think😂
John i mean❤😂
John is very skillful indeed 👍🙂
Great video love watching a bit of balsa bashing.
Thanks Mark 👍
This is right in my wheelhouse Cliff. I flew my ASW28 all over last summer at the white horse in Westbury 😊 (In the interests of being helpful rather than unfairly critical, the audio was a little odd with intermittent static)
Never flown at Westbury maybe one day. Thanks for the feedback I know one piece of audio at least had both microphones rendered which made a curious effect but I didn't hear any static! Cheers 👍
Lovely model. Did i miss you saying if its a kit or a plan?
John did mention it was a 'short kit' Oliver, I believe it's from Sarik Hobbies, cheers
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes cheers.
Very nice 👌🏻
It's going to be a stunning model 👍
I'm watching you talk about the wing wires and there isn't any difference between your RC model and a free flight Nordic. My Dad was very involved (designed &manufactured circle tow hooks; AMA hall of fame; NFFS hall of fame) He passed away a Decade ago and his Nordic model box burned up in the CZU fire on Santa Cruz county California. Turning these facts to a positive side and getting back on track ; about the wing wires..
The A-2 glider has about a 6 foot wing span . About a dozen wing wires survived the fire. The front wire was 5/32 piano wire about 7 inches long with material removed on each side tapering from the center (full diameter length same as the thickness of the pylon) each side tapering down to about 3/32" then radius up to full diameter for 1/2" at each end. The rear wire likewise but made from about 5" of 3/32" piano wire. Each wing had alum. tubing glued and wrapped with thread to the s
spars with the root of each wing panel sheeted along with the leading edge to the spar. He also reinforced with carbon fiber thread.
@erichatschek Hi Eric, those fires were devastating, I was just reading about the details on Wikipedia, thankfully only one person died. Your Dad was a clever chap by the sounds of it, thank you for your detailed comment, I'm sure John will find it very interesting, cheers 👍
Id like to build like a balsa delta electric full size.lay down cockpit in wing Cessna like controlls
Sounds interesting, go for it 👍
I have the same t21 kit and plan next on the board. Dreadful plan which Chris acknowledges. No need to glass the wing though.
Hi Adam, I think John just wants to glass the wing because he keeps dinging it, where we fly there are quite a lot of stones 🤔👍
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes Im guessing you fly on dartmoor?
Dartmoor but more likely Little Haldon for towing 👍
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes Ah yes my dad lives not far away from their and went to Haldon a few times. I may visit one day with my scale jobbies!
@@adamchambers5599 You'd be made very welcome Adam 👍
From perspective of free flight seems way over bui
T.
Hi Paul, this model is for radio control and has such a large wing area the wing loading will be pretty low, cheers 👍
animations with 1000 pictures... AI to the rescue!
Oh gosh yes please. 😊 I would suspect that would be in the patreon section but very cool idea 💡.
AI is not the future, good old fashioned video is where it's at 😁
or how about 8mm film? Whilst we're at it, let's go back to log tables instead of calculators :)@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes
Try 1938 for the real one, not a model.
Thanks Ted 👍
