I just earned my unrestricted CDL this past January. At first, I was terrible at parallel parking, but once I studied how the truck moves from an outside perspective by watching the instructors and playing with die-cast 18-wheeler models trucks and learning all my landmarks for the tractor and trailer tires--I finally got it an aced this portion of my CDL test with one of the best examples my CDL examiner had ever seen he told me. I mean, I had that 48-foot trailer in that box in just 3.0 minutes on my test!

This is the best and most helpful instructional video.
I recently failed my CDL test on the parallel maneuver. The school and the test site cones were said to be identical. They weren't. After my first turn, then straightened up, I was taught to straight back until the start cone (with the pipe) is next to my shoulder. Works perfectly at the school every time. I did my steps exactly right, then I was failed. My mistake was backing until the cone was at my shoulder. Because the test site box was set up different. My school instructors said they set their cones up exactly the same. They were wrong. But it's my fault as the driver because it's up to me to notice these things. There were no lines to watch my rear tandems to stop at so I will use my G.O.A.L. and also stop when my cone reaches the fuel tank. I'm watching these videos to learn from my mistake and do better next time.

@@truckerstevecdlinstructor Thank you. Now that I have experienced the exam, I am very comfortable with the process. My rhythm was effected a couple times by the examiner skipping stuff, but my pre trip and In cab were an easy pass. My straight back and offset were executed without any pull ups. I was completely gutted when I executed the parallel exactly the way I do every day, but the exam set up was so different it didn't work. I never hit any cones, but I was too deep in the box after I straight backed in. (before the next step of curving the trailer into the box). Today I told my instructor that he needs to adjust the school set up because all 4 students that tested failed on stuff we do easily at the school. It's our fault. I get that. But we followed step by step instructions to the letter and they didn't work.

You need to know not to go to deep when you back into the space. If the front cone on the left is in front of your tractor, you are to deep. You can also be to deep because you are not center in the lane. Best to you!

@@truckerstevecdlinstructor Thank you. I noticed. I'm ready now.
For over a month I have been taught to back u until my shoulder or steps lines up with the cone. Every single time that has worked perfectly. When I told my instructor and other students the details they were all shocked. I told them all to be careful and focus on the rear axle. Forget the cone because that's a fail. I want to see all of the students in my class pass.

Steve, what if I doing the test with a truck with only one axle on the back of the trailer, when backing up to the box, should the back tire of the trailer be on the line as well before I turn the wheel to the righr to bring the Tractor in?

Center cone is the second. Backing in with the center cone in sight, will help Center the trailer into the alley when you back in
