Well, with that name, he would have to do a War Hound equipped with battle barding as well. And maybe with swords attached to it, to replenish the front line men who have lost theirs. Heck, what a unit.
I love the custom made approach as opposed to shopping around for a 3d stl. I can appreciate the benifits of 3d printing, but really appreciate seeing a process that has this level of creativity and style.
I’ve been a fan for years, and it’s been amazing to see your style evolve-both in your painting and in your videos! Hearing you talk on Trapped Under Plastic about your own ‘Ninjon charm’ and how you’ve refined that bold, unmistakable style was spot on. The unique flair, the skits, the wit-it all makes your channel a true original. Keep bringing the magic!
I love this, and I could see a group that are bound specifically to hold back chaos modeled after the iron skin oni that guard the gates of hell. Exchanging their blades for large Kanabo, they wrap the skin of a Rakshasa (a power tiger type demon) around their waste as a marker of their stafus
The Nippon faction from warhammer Fantasy would fit this theme perfectly, would it not? So this could possibly be a "what if?" Scenario of them coming to age of sigmar
I would definitely, at least, enjoy watching you create this faction. I have similar ideas for my own 40k. I want the "classic" Western Knight turned Shogun.
There is some pretty cool White Scars lore that would fit this. One of the books spends a lot of time on the process of making the blades the white scars use. A kill team of Ronan from this background would be pretty cool.
First man, you have the best painting channel on youtube. You have interesting content, but explain everything simply and have some of the best paint jobs out there. I have learned more from you than the other 10 channels I follow. Thanks for keeping your channel a painting instruction channel while still bringing unique ideas. You should definitely keep making the faction. Would love to see a warband of these guys. Also need an update on your GD entry.
Loved the 80s Retrowave Synth montage in the middle. Thank you for confirming my brown start on the red. I told an acquaintance about that and they didn’t believe me that you could start with a brown and build up to a brighter red.
I to have some of the same interest in Samurai and Ninjas, and would like to add Elves, Super Heroes and Kaiju's. Love what you do here. Although I don't do the Warhammer thing, I already have to many hobbies, I would like to see more of this...
Jon seems genuinely cool. Add on top that he’s gone from a pretty good painter to a great painter. Video editing has gotten dialed in as well. It makes these videos a joy to watch.
Dude, I would LOVE to see a video where you deep dive on your underpainting style. I don't have an art background, and unless I were to copy what you do exactly I'm not sure how I'd go about choosing colors, etc. Showing a few models with a few different underpainting color choices and detailing your thought process on each would be incredibly valuable. Thanks for another awesome video. Your content is some of the best around.
Love the Shogun vibes. You could go through all the traditional sengouku era warriors. An onna-bushi, as the muscle of the group. A sohei monk who's ironically enough, the hothead and maybe a ninja, but a more traditional one who wears spikes on his palms and heels to help in climbing.
I absolutely want to see more of these models--and Warcry seems like the perfect place to do it. The warband is a manageable size for a force and it feels like a place where the character you could give each model won't be lost amongst a sea of others like in a full army.
Awesome result! Please, continue! As a dedicated Mishima player of Warzone, I'd suggest you look for some ideas in the miniatures of this Megacorporation in the Mutant Chronicles universe! A typical example leaning towards the Japanese extreme of this "Eastern-culture" continuum were the Mishima Suicide Warheads: human-like robots dressed in traditional Japanese clothing and hats, that would just reach the enemy to detonate!
Another one to consider is Hibou Khan, from the White Scars HH range. Anvil Industry in the UK also make some 'cyberpunk katanas' that you could use (which would be less impressive scale-wise than the one Jon made, but easier).
Alright, name suggestion. Guardians of the Iron Way. An order of warrior-monks sworn not to a god or a realm, but a creed, something pretty rare in the AoS world to be honest, and it would give them both a different sound to the 2-long-name GW format (e.g. Soulblight Gravelords, Kharadron Overlords, Ossiarch Bonereapers). The idea of them being warriors but also guardians ties very deeply into old japanese ideals of honor and protecting one's homeland. The Iron Way could be your easy in to add a sort of Bushido to your epic samurai. And having them be potentially nomadic could work in some interesting tie-ins with other factions. Maybe they don't discriminate with their allies so long as their goals align with their creed. Hope that at least gets the creative juices flowing, and I love to see this stuff from you so keep up the good work! P.S. more Infinity content, now. Operation Sandtrap has cool samurai and you need to paint them
I love it, this ronin samurai barbarian faction that has yet to be. Sometimes kitbashing is the only way forward unless you have amazing skills with 3D rendering and 3D printing.
I mix apoxie sculpt and greenstuff to get the rigidity of green stuff with sandability of Apoxie sculpt (to round out edges, blend into the plastic, etc). Cool model, I really love the look
Man-made artistry beyond my comprehension. I couldn't do even 1% of what you did in this video; hand-eye coordinaton in the gutter, was always the dunce in not only arts & crafts class, but also technical education class too. I know there's a lot of experience, patience and even failures behind your current level of skill, but man... Seems genuinely impossible to me. Props for the great work.
I was recently painting an Imperial Navy Bastion fleet for BFG and did something similar to what you do here on the red, just with some new Fluor paint I bought not long ago. A super thinned glaze of that gave me a super saturated red while keeping the depth! And the highlights were super bright before, almost pastely, but after that turned into an amazing red!
Wait…what? The katana better than a broadsword? Alright, I’ll let you have that, but my bearded axe reigns supreme! Go Norsemen! Once again, your videos are awesome.
To go along with the lore you came up with... the faction name could be something like: Shadowscale Hunters. The main units could be samurai, you could have a stealthy ninja unit, Warlord/Shogun HQs, Kabuki squad, religious units/characters, siege weapons and more!
Hello good sir! I want to tell you that you and Hobby cheating are at the top of my list of mini painters on your tube. You both are doing the most technical painting videos. you might focus on a lot more entertainment, but you still are actually painting models with a brush ,and giving tips in that way .I know UA-camrs probably think that they have to make the newest coolest video with the newest coolest angle, but regardless of that, you still actually painting, and I appreciate that. I think people are going to get fed up with all of the Extra stuff in the videos, like 24 hours of painting straight ,and stuff like that. I know everyone has to worry about sponsors, but I still appreciate that you are actually painting and I’ve learned a lot from you.
There are so many times when watching your videos that you just spout the simplest solution to a complex problem that has been plaguing me and its always impressive.
The model looks cool as hell. Kitbashing projects around what gets you hyped is imo the best part of the hobby and I'd love to see other models joining this hype train ! Great work, Jon !
I love it when I get an idea for a stumped mini watching others. I was using a regular green and I wasn't liking it, but a desecrated green or brown green would be perfect.
Lots more of these please! Maybe a Monk with a spade axe, an archer with a big daikyu bow, an Ogre with a massive jade lion statue on a chain as some kind of crazy flail etc. If we're looking for Viking inspired faction names, maybe something "North Star" related?
I know Bambu gets a bunch of hate, but I bought the X1C 2 weeks before the black friday sale and they gave me store credit for the difference when the sale started (I had to request it, but they gave zero pushback). My X1C has had no rest in the last month and I have had 2 failures and they were both user error (I used the wrong build plate). I've burned through 6 rolls of filament and many partial rolls, printing ASA (smooth build plate!), PLA and PETG without problems. I had full confidence in just clicking Print and walking away. I had to babysit the first layer on my previous printer every single time because it failed more than half the time. And the print quality on the X1C is SO much better than my previous printer. Highly recommend.
Fantastic conversion! Lot of fans will know GWS did a Nippon range of minis back in the 80s. True 28mm though so tiny compared to current GWS stuff. Some minis are still available through Wargames Foundry though.
The mini you designed and built is awesome! The paint job is gorgeous! That is such a cool concept! Samurai-Viking hybrid faction is such a good idea, I love it! I wanna see a whole faction of it now though!
Man, that three colour gradient for the base coat is such a good technique. I just tried it on a mini and it's turning out great so far. It adds so much depth and atmosphere while tying the whole thing together. Can't wait to find some more interesting colour combos use it some more :)
You make the painting look so easy! Please make more of these models! I also love ninja/samurai and your channel name is the whole reason I watched a video of yours in the first place!
Love the concept and the final model looks brilliant. I really liked that you went with full kitbash/sculpting method rather than 3D printing and I would love to see more of this faction come to life, some ashigaru for support maybe? Some ninjas if you want to go really crazy a big boss sumo dude!
Question 1: yes please do more, this is so inspiring. I'd love to see more of the creative inspiration and decision process as this helps hobbyist from an army gamer level all the way to golden demon (which can demand it's own fair share of kitbashing). Question 2: The Oathsworn of Ninas; Roaming Ronin
Absolutely love the faction, your bashing efforts and achieving what you sought out to make is so inspiring man! I feel like I constantly get stuck and lose sight of what I’m making (even with reference photos!). You’re a magician with color theory and brush technique I swear. I’d definitely like to see you paint bigger models more often (which I know is a big ask). I always want to see people build and paint fulgrim transfigured, but I’d also love to see you kitbash the ever-loving hell out of that model and make it someone akin to what suits you. That being said the price tag on that piece is unsane, and would simply just love to see your process with the model. Love all of your videos Jon! Best way to start my Friday’s!
You should *definitely* finish this faction. Thank you for such a great model. For me, I'm getting a slightly pirate raider feel from this chap, so respectfully suggest that the name of the faction might be considerd to be, "The Wōkòu" - named after the Japanese/Chinese/Korean pirates. I think they could make for some implacable foes for the Deepkin. Given the red tones of this first model, it could feature an emblem of the red seal, that they ultimately sailed under. Keep having fun!
You actually Can sand green stuff, you just need a really high grit surface and you need to accept the fact that it's going in the trash after when the green stuff clogs the grit. I use disposable sanding sticks anyway. You can also use a little bit of gel super glue and a silicone sculpting tool with a piece of disposable plastic bag to wrap the tip (so the glue doesn't get on the tool), to smooth the green stuff after it's been cured if you need to make small adjustments.
Yes, please continue. You can call the faction Skålgun and Skålja depending on if they are viking samurai or viking ninja. Skål is the correct spelling for SKOL!
Fun video! I too grew up with all those things but I leaned hard into the Ray Harryhausen Sinbad movies and Aladdin. Which kind of explains why I’ve been working on Warhammer Araby stuff. I hope we get to see more of your Warhammer “Nippon” in the future. Also if you haven’t tried it, do a 50/50 of greenstuff and apoxie sculpt ;)
Man! That model is seriously awesome! The kitbash is smooth, but the paintjob really brings it to life. I especially like the desaturated green alongside the red armor plates, it really works well IMO. I would love a faction like this for Warhammer... well, for 40K cause that's what I play but you get what I mean. Please continue to flesh out that faction, it deserves it! As for name, I suggest The Nimrods
1. you 100% should make this a full faction, the people want more! 2. I think a classic Viking Samurai name is acceptable but I like going a bit more toward the synonyms for the same names to give it a more GW feel, something like the Ronin Bezerkers or Shinobi Slayers. Either way Loved the video!
Pro sculpting trick: try a 50/50 mix of Apoxie Sculpt and Greenstuff. It gives you the thinness, blendability, and sharp detailing options of greenstuff, combined with the ability to post-cure sand it and carve it. Also will save you money on GS.
Dude... this was such a kick ass model! Awesome job with this one man. I'd love to see an expansion of this war band and if games workshop ever made this faction I totally get it
I have some white-scars that need to be finished. Never thought I'd be kitbashing some of my older space wolf bits with them but now, I'm going to give it a try!
This is the Warhammer content I love the most. Remembers me of the old White Dwarfs, but with more details! Please build more of this faction it looks amazing and maybe maybe there will be a Old World Cathy faction in the future!
Jon, make this. For real make this. Kickstart STLs for these and I will back it today, yesterday. This model looks phenomenal and there is a huge lack of good East Asian minis. Go check minifactory and look. I did what you did and kitbashed a samurai esq battle master fighter cause there wasn’t anything good.
Oh man love the low music playing in the background at 12:40 that felt so clean! To your question, anyone that says no you shouldn't continue this and make a whole army of this needs to be kicked out of the dojo!
Absolutely more Viking Samurai!! Let the Priests of the Raven’s Sacrifice grow in number! (The ravens sacrifice being battle as that is when we give ravens something to eat)
I feel really fortunate that the Ork Kommando Kill Team gives me enough variety in heads, weapons, extra gear that I can assemble something and then paint them up to have their own look and theme. This is so awesome and so impressive, and it's exactly what I love seeing as part of tabletop hobbies - this is a pure representation of you. Bringing it to the table is always a win, no matter how the dice fall. :D It's also crazy to me that after all the time kitbashing you went with the painting approach you did - I feel like the kitbash is already a monumental achievement, but for you, it's just another day! The paint job looks great, but I would probably have more analysis paralysis on color scheme, details, etc. As to the questions: 1. Yes, please keep making these. From a creative perspective, you'll only continue to be motivated to expand it because it's your creation. A Kill Team squad could work too. 2. Not sure, but I think it needs "Jon" in it. "Jontunai" or something to combine the samurai + viking vibe.
Make MORE of these guys. They are super cool. What would a brute in this faction look like??? Have fun with it (maybe some kind of Oni/jotnar if youre trying to blend samurai and norse)
Hey Jon, I think its very cool that you have shots of the NMM gold with your brush that has the gold ferrule. But the ferrule does kinda show that mournfang brown isn't quite the right colour for an NMM base colour. IMO it should be a little "greener" if that makes sense
Yeeesssss!! Do more tiny soldiers of this faction!!! And make it mostly about the kitbashing, there's way too few videos talking about this, especially when making things from scratch, like the sword you did! Some of us are into miniatures, but not specifically Warhammer, so we don't have the endless amount of bits Warhammer fans seem to have, so sometimes it's hard to come up with kitbashing ideas due to the lack of materials. Having some tips about how to go around creating them without a 3D printer would be awesome! ^^
When doing a whole bashed warband or army it's very helpful to use thermoplastic press molds to make extra copies of customized bits. Like your customized back banner. Look up "oyumaru blue stuff casting" it's like "copy paste" for model makers
Viking samurai for the win! What are their mounts going to look like? Will you have traditional massive bows for the old hammer archer models? So much lore to produce! Should be fun to follow!
I love that the finished result looks so good, and is made from almost entirely GW minis, but doesn't immediately read as a GW mini. If I saw this in the wild without seeing this video first I don't think I'd have thought it use any GW kits at all. I clearly need to be paying more attention to warcry models!
Would absolutely love to see a warband as long as the format is like this video. Personally I hate kitbashing videos but the mix of bash and brush was great here!
At the end of the video, it is an amazing kitbash and the paint job is perfect and very fitting. I do think that if you feel enough of a draw, you should at the very least get a war cry warband done for this faction - if not maybe go all out by making a full AOS faction.
I'd be interested to see how you handle basic troops. Fits the aesthetic, but can be produced in batches of ten without financial ruin and within a reasonable time.
Jon, this is a true masterpiece! I'm honestly blown away. And also the video so superb, it's the best one I've seen from you in a while. Very informative, so many great tips all around. More like this please! :)
It is a Mongolian Samurai (vikings of the East) the name of the faction. Rimebound Hordes of Uldranheim. You have built Torakai the Shadowblade. Yes, this faction looks as if they came from the Steppe.
Me having never played Warhammer a day in my life:
Yes. Complete the faction.
This. Same
if you decide to dive down the rabbit hole then welcome to a lifetime plastic crack addiction lmao
…and keep the combination of kitbashing/painting in the vids - it‘s perfect hobby content ❤
@@40000_warhammers I can’t ever get any of my buddies to play and I’m anti social irl. But I’ve assembled some and enjoy painting.
@@Crown.A Latest Kill Team has a solo mode ;)
Yes, you need to finish a warband of your new faction, the Glory-bound Honor Hounds.
keeping in line with GW's terrible naming scheme lmao
@heromedley exactly.
Yes of course
Well, with that name, he would have to do a War Hound equipped with battle barding as well. And maybe with swords attached to it, to replenish the front line men who have lost theirs. Heck, what a unit.
YES.
That “do it” segment gave off massive “Do it. No balls.” energy. And I’m so there for it.
Samurai Vikings! If you bring in some of the nautical elements of Vikings, your war band becomes a longship crew. Raiding villages overrun by Oni.
There were pirate ronin. In the carribean.
That would be such a cool lore and aesthetic. If James Workshop doesn't do it, One Page Rules should
More, more samurai Vikings must be made
Faction name idea: Primal Ronin

Definitely complete the faction! And keep showcasing that system of painting you used- it's great!
Building a Faction sounds interesting. Keeping an aesthetic over multiple models and maybe picking a rules base to run them in.
I love the way you did the shadows, I've been thinking about doing something similar, but this video gave great tips on how to do it!
I'd love to see an expansion of this war band and if games workshop ever made this faction I totally get it
Samurai Vikings sound like something that would fit into Age of Sigmar very naturally.
I’m glad you found the faction you like. Ironjawz hit me just perfectly
You crushed it Ninjon.... that is an absolutely legendary Viking-sized samurai.
YES, MAKE THE WHOLE FACTION!!
And if you ever want to put it on the table, you can always use OPR's points calculator to use it on Grimdatk Future 😉
Absolutely more Viking Samurai!! Let the Priests of the Raven’s Sacrifice grow in number! (The ravens sacrifice being battle as that is when we give ravens something to eat)
Hokey Moley! Your painting skills have leveled up to god tier in such a short time.. awesome model
Yes, go for it. I’d like to see how you approach fleshing it out and painting it up. What game system would you imagine them being played in?
I feel really fortunate that the Ork Kommando Kill Team gives me enough variety in heads, weapons, extra gear that I can assemble something and then paint them up to have their own look and theme. This is so awesome and so impressive, and it's exactly what I love seeing as part of tabletop hobbies - this is a pure representation of you. Bringing it to the table is always a win, no matter how the dice fall. :D
It's also crazy to me that after all the time kitbashing you went with the painting approach you did - I feel like the kitbash is already a monumental achievement, but for you, it's just another day! The paint job looks great, but I would probably have more analysis paralysis on color scheme, details, etc.
As to the questions:
1. Yes, please keep making these. From a creative perspective, you'll only continue to be motivated to expand it because it's your creation. A Kill Team squad could work too.
2. Not sure, but I think it needs "Jon" in it. "Jontunai" or something to combine the samurai + viking vibe.
Make them then market them that was beautiful.
Yes *please* complete this faction. This looks truly awesome.
Make MORE of these guys. They are super cool. What would a brute in this faction look like??? Have fun with it (maybe some kind of Oni/jotnar if youre trying to blend samurai and norse)
This was really cool. I feel like I'm getting drawn toward kitbashing more and more, and it's really cool to see your process.
Hey Jon, I think its very cool that you have shots of the NMM gold with your brush that has the gold ferrule. But the ferrule does kinda show that mournfang brown isn't quite the right colour for an NMM base colour. IMO it should be a little "greener" if that makes sense
If you combine Greenstuff and Apoxie Sculpt in equal parts you get the benefits of both and it is sand-able once cured.
Or greenstuff and milliput
Absolutely make more of these guys. As for a name, they give off a Ronin feel, more than a Samurai. More mercenary. Also, then they could use guns!
Go for a warband, I love seeing people kitbash and hearing the passion they put into it.
Love you painting style. Can't wait for another Golden Demon in your background.
Dew it! Phenomenal painting tips as always, I cant wait to see more of this faction.
All hail Plasticard!
Cement for the Styrene God!
Dog tarnit, I do so love scratch-building components with the monarch of modelling materials
Yes, please continue! Just let us know where the specific pieces come from. This is fun!
It is a Mongolian Samurai (vikings of the East) the name of the faction. Rimebound Hordes of Uldranheim. You have built Torakai the Shadowblade. Yes, this faction looks as if they came from the Steppe.
