How to make sturdy 2x4 garage shelves easy or complicated!

- This storage shelf solution can be made as easy as putting up some 2x4's or as complicated as building large shop cabinets. I like the way that the storage cabinets came out in the end, and as the video explains I enclosed everything to keep the shop sawdust off of everything we store.

This is by far the most watched video on my UA-cam channel! I just wish I'd done a better job explaining things... Feel free to ask your questions here and I'll do my best to get to all of them. Please subscribe and thanks for watching!!
Very nice demonstration. This is exactly what I planned for my garage, basic 2*4 shelf and adding doors later if I want. Just have one concern: when I check 2*4 shelf designs around youtube, lots of comments are against the idea of putting weight on screws. For example, this one: ua-cam.com/video/o40kKb0Wp-U/v-deo.html&lc=UgyBS9jao4SECld-uql4AaABAg, and this one: ua-cam.com/video/6ad07z8P17s/v-deo.html&lc=UgzcmCNvWGlcV9SDlRF4AaABAg. What's your opinion from your two years' experience with those shelves? Would glue help? Shall I double up the 2*4s under shelves to transfer the weight? Thanks a lot.
Xirun Chen I have had absolutely no problems with the shelves. Some people said that 2 x 4’s were the wrong thing to use and plywood would be better, however I have had opportunity to remove some of the 2 x 4‘s to fit tall things in the shelves and was very glad that I didn’t have to cut out some plywood. As far as the screws go I haven’t had any break but if you’re concerned about it glue would probably help. I see what they’re talking about but it seems like an unnecessary concern. Either that or I used more screws than I really needed to and “overbuilt“ the shelves. Best of luck on your shelf project!
Watched is true because you can't hear it.
Hi, quick general materials list and rough cost estimate? Thx 😃🍀 P.S. Really nice family...our kind of neighbors.👍👨👧👦🤠
This is the best for the garage shelving.
LOL, my wife made the exact same comment about sawdust after the very first woodworking project in my new home.
Solution (I hope - I am still working on it):
- HD1400 RIDGID 14 gallon 6HP NXT shop vacuum from home depot.
- HEPA/OSHA VF6000 filter and VF3602 dust bags (there is a trick to avoid buying dust bags constantly).
- Dust Deputy Low-pro cyclone separator lid
- 5 gallon home depot bucket
- And build a cart on casters to contain it all that will do 3 jobs in one: (1) Contain the vacuum. (2) Serve as an outfeed table for my table saw. (3) Sturdy enough when I collapse the wheels to use as my shop/assembly workbench.
Man, humility is a nice trait, but you deserve big props. Nice work. And cool dad for sharing air time with the missus and setting your son on the road to manly stardom!
+SUFFERFOOLS thank you so much! Your kind words (and trolling the trolls) much appreciated!
You did a good job. Nice to have your family help you. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
What a great video, I love everything about it from the idea of the shelves, to the humor used in your narration, even the editing with the moving boards was cool. Thanks for going to all the work of making this video, very entertaining.
You are hilarious. I enjoyed smiling while learning to build garage cabinets.
Definitely love this. Thank you
Really great video. I've been watching so many and none of them offer a simple DIY solution for great looking cabinets. Nice job and thank you!
Those turned out real nice
Thanks so much!
Looks really nice
I Am impressed hope mine come out that good. Don’t have all your tools but 2ill do my best. Thanks for the video
Shelves looks awesome
Thanks a lot!
Your shelf pieces were very magical.
Thank you! A lot of effort goes into that stop motion stuff…
I'm looking at doing me closest...... I loved the framework...... simple and easy to understand........Thanks you
Great video love that you got the family involved
Thanks a bunch for watching!
Ryan you are the man! The only time I can get my wife in the garage is to get in or out of the car or tell me it needs to be cleaned up from all my little projects.
HA! Thanks man! Subscribe for more to come!
Nicely done! Overkill on the build, but looks really nice. It's a funny video. I appreciate that you didn't overdo the talking and did a very good job of showing. I love the son part and the animated 2x4s marching into their places. Great job!
It's the show of a whole family members. Love it. Thank you.
+Mekong Giant thank you for watching!
So many DIY's without safety glasses. 😎
I've got to say that this was the funniest video I have seen. I was cracking up so much when you were talking about your son (and the comments you inserted). Thank you for a very informative and entertaining video. You have a great sense of humor and are a competent carpenter in my book.
You’re very kind! Thanks for watching!
You succeeded in making a simple thing complicated, but the end result is nice.
Thanks for your interest
Looks good.
That is sweet!! Definitely on my summer project list!
Jose Sanchez thanks for watching! Best of luck!
Nice simplistic design. I was overthinking my design. Great video!
Thanks! That's why I make them! (Videos)
This looks like the right way to build some shelving! Great video. I plan on making several units for my garage and basement.
Great ! Thanks for watching!
gfourmacman, use plywood for the platforms, not so labor intensive...
I got 2 Sons. 16 & 17. Im not sure what the warranty is on them but they seem to be defective after about 16 years or so. Lol.
Should of bought the extended warranty 🤣.
@@davidp1241 I find the extended warranty is a scam.
Great video, exactly what I was looking for! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Nice video... may I asked how those hinges have held up?
Complete 222% more work with a son!!! 🤣🤣 Thanks for the video. This helped me out a lot. Just bought my first home and I am dying to build gararge cabinets just like yours.
Thanks so much for watching! I hope it helps.
Agree with the shelve comments. I don't have the time to cut all those 2x4s. Home center would have ripped the plywood. And plywood is engineered for the application. 2x4s aren't engineered for lateral loads on the face. That being said the span is short enough to not be an issue. This is not to be critical but to help others who are looking to build. In many ways this project could be accomplished faster, better and cheaper.
Looks good. Nicely done, I like it!
Thanks a bunch!
Nice work mate. Not sure why you used 2x4 for the shelves instead of ply but that's just me. The doors look great and even better you managed to get the wife out there to help!!!!!
Thanks for watching! If I was going to do it again I would do a few things differently. But for now they work great!
Its awesome! I wish I have the talent. Great guy with great family included the cat.
Mark Lidasan thanks a bunch!
Mark Lidasan You do have the talent dude, you just have to go out there and do it!
Great team!~ Fabulous work!! Thank you both for sharing and posting..
You say you used the wrong hinges ... is the link above to the hinges on Amazon, the correct ones? What do you mean by the "adjustment screw"? Is it on the hinge? Do you have a video of adjusting the hinge? Love shelves... love the style.... How much space between the doors is needed to have them open back to back?
Yes I linked to the correct hinges. They have adjustment screws built-in. You only need maybe 3/4 inch gap between doors back to back. Good luck!
NICE, I should have done this
Do it!
Strong shelves, you could put alot of heavy stuff on those. Good job.
*Sees ad for son* *Calls GF into room* "Baby I need one of these, get over here!" Great vid,
jgreeter78 hahaha! 😂 awesome, thanks! Good luck with that!
Lotta negativity in the comments. I dug it, and it resembled how a lot of my projects go. Saving it as reference for my own cabinets.
Thanks a lot Jason! I’m not sure why there’s so much hate for the 2 x 4 shelving. It’s overbuilt, but we are storing heavy things and I know that this will never sag.
Hubbard's Handmade, I'm a serial over builder. There's a several hundred pound chicken coop in the yard or furniture around the house with extra railings or supports to prove it. If it costs more I really don't care - it usually resulted from me going off script with someone else's plans and/or it can survive my kids being kids. Both are satisfying.
Exactly! More than a few armchair quarterbacks just don’t get it… 😉
Woooow look great and cheaper thank you shake video
you guys are awesome. Great Build buddy.
Jose Becerra thanks Jose! We had a good time
Wow, so jealous, they look great. I have a Lucas for a son..... and I am his faaawwthah
Lol nice!
Great Video, I think you did a good job on illustrating the basics of building garage shelves. Thank you! Love the son part.
Damn was skeptical at first but actually looks nice afterwards thanks for the inspiration for a simple way to make something nice
Thanks for watching!
This is a great build. May I know why you used 2x4s for the shelving instead of just longer ply sheets ? Just asthaetics? Makes it look like a deck floor though, which is a nice variegation.
Two reasons:
1. I wanted the added strength that the 2 x 4‘s would give.
2. Modular design. I have already had to take out a section of 2 x 4 shelf to make room for a water softener which was too big to fit under the lowest shelf. This was easy to do by unscrewing a few 2 x 4
Thanks for your interest in my video and projects!
Awesome shelves.. great job... Can I ask how much everything cost? Thanks
Please put a list of everything you got and used example 16 2x4's thank you
Nicely done.
Thanks for sharing, needed inspiration for my build. Was not feeling the need for doors, but that kinda changed now...
I’m so happy this helped! Good luck
Thanks for the vedeo!!! Nice work!!
Thank you for watching!
Excellent vid. Nice and cheap.
thanks! its working great!
What was your cost in material? I too am needing to do a similar project and don't see the need for melanine or mdf
This video was so well made and descriptive I actually think I could build this myself. And I've never built anything that didn't come with an instruction manual before. Lol. Great video!
Thank you for the wonderful complement! Good luck with your projects!
Great job 🙂👍
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for making this video .but is there anyway you can tell the dimensions for door and frame ,because u said u cut the door panels short so I don't want to make that mistake.thanks in advance .
navdeep gill thanks for watching! The doors are made up of half-inch plywood which comes in 4' x 8' sheets. At the lumberyard I had them cut the boards exactly in half making 2' x 8' sheets. This would have been OK but the mistake I actually made was in purchasing the wrong hinges. I should have gone with face frame hinges, but the euro hinges that I used set the doors 1 inch outside the face frame instead of directly on top of the face frame leaving a 2 inch gap in the center. It's not that the boards were cut wrong… It's the fact that I got the wrong hinges and/or made the frame 2 inches too wide. I could have gotten around this if I would have simply tested the hinges before building the frame they were going in then fitting the frame accordingly. Does that make sense?
@@Hubbmade
So if you were using 4×8 sheeting ripped in half (23 7/8" accounting for blade width) and using 2×4's vertically with the "side" or 1 1/2" side of the stud facing out and being used as the face frame....do you think that would have been the way to go?
Obviously your vertical stud placement for the door rough opening would have needed to be bang on and the hinge overlay (In my case I'm thinking about using a 1/2" overlay hidden hinge) would have to be taken into account. Maybe do a router round over on the door plywood to finish instead of trim.
I've already ripped all of my sheeting but unfortunately I'm using 3/8" birch 5 ply and am trying to put together a solid plan before proceeding. 3/8" may have the tendency to warp and isn't deep enough to hide the 35mm hole needed for the hinge cup. I'm starting to lean towards doing a 3 or 4 inch door frame with the 3/8" plywood recessed into the back side of the trim which will change my rough opening...your thoughts? ( If you are somehow able to follow my jargon lol)
Amazingly, your are the only one on UA-cam that shares my vision of what garage cabinets should be (maybe with the exceptions of the upper cabinets and using plywood for the shelving material)
Any advice or forethought would be greatly appreciated!
Simple but very nice!
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching
Sir, may I know the size of screws you used?
The 2x4s got 2.5 inch screws. Any pocket holes got 1.25 inch screws
I'm surprised you didn't use plywood for the shelves.
word looks like he wasted 2 x 4
2x4s are cheap. I would probably use plywood if I made it again... but its not a "waste"
just seem like you had to make a whole bunch of cuts but if it works for you that all that matters.
I was going to say the same thing but hey if you have all that time to spend on cutting why not. We used plyboards on ours bought it at Lowe's we took our measurements they cut it for us and the doors saves us time.
Very nice job, I'd like to be so talented
I think this project turned out excellent. I want to do something similar in my garage.
Thrifty Garage Thanks! I'm really happy with how it came out! Check out this can storage improvement I made too! ua-cam.com/video/PI6eld1eMiA/v-deo.html

@@Hubbmade i am starting to work on half of your storage in my garage using your guidelines.
Nice work!
Thanks!
Hello, great video!
How thick did you make your doors?
Thank you!
I used half inch plywood. Thanks for watching!
Great job and looks good. Very nicely
filmed, and obviously kudos to the producer - your son!! Quick questions - how long did it take and approx what was the cost? Thanks for sharing.
Depending on skill level plan for 2-4 days work. We went to a discount (imperfect) building store, so the plywood was cheaper. If I remember right it was 6-7 sheets of 1/2 plywood and a bunch of 2x4s. total was roughly $350-400. not including hardware and screws. Prices have gone up a bit in the last several years so I’d budget at least $500-600 now. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Get yourself a son. My favorite part. Lol. Good job
Honestly this video made me laugh so hard. I didn't see those boards moving themself coming
Thanks! Glad to hear it!
Stop lying just to please the white man!!
@@acemany1126 😂😂
Great video! May I ask why you used 2x4's for the shelves instead of 3/4" plywood?
You really could make it either way, but I knew the 2x4s would be strong enough for me to crawl around on and wouldn't sag over time. If I were going to do it again now I would use 3/4" plywood to save a little room for more storage. Thanks for watching! subscribe!
Great job!
Gonna try this style next week. Thanks for the inspiration! and general framing idea! I'm going to use plywood for the shelf; 3/4" for the doors as the hinges require 13mm bore depth; I learned a lot about HINGES!and Material Selection!
AWESOME! Good luck and feel free to email me questions or some pics when you are done! ryanislucky@gmail.com
Lag Screws and options. Only change I would make is to use lag screws to hold up the weight bearing horizontal 2x4's (at the very least on the one connected to the wall.
That being said - great design. Something I am curious about. I want to be able to move an 8 foot rolling workbench into the lower level of the shelving unit (effectively ruling out supporting 2x4 beams on the front side except for the sides of the shelving unit).
However, my concern is the structural integrity of such a design. I could try to add flat metal support bars to the front horizontal 2x4's to give them additional structural integrity. Or I guess I could also run vertical 2x4's into ceiling and lag screw them into the ceiling support beams. However, my garage has 12 foot ceilings and getting to that height is a bit of a challenge.
I love the cabinet option with your design, as it allows for a clean looking storage unit.
Any thoughts?
OMG, Love your t-shirt!
Thanks! LOL
Hi Ryan,
I built my storage unit about 3 years ago in my garage using 2x4s and plywood, and my unit is open.
I came upon your video and really like the way you enclosed your unit.
I would like to enclose my unit. Do you assist, or can you assist a DIYer in enclosing their unit?
Thanks
Thanks for watching CJ! I’m not sure what you mean by assistance… I don’t go to peoples houses and help with projects or anything. Mostly I put out this video as a kind of instruction. If you have specific questions I guess you could send me an email. Ryanislucky@gmail.com
What a fun, informative video!!! thank you!!! Just wondering if it's beyond my skill level!!!!! :-/
Bunny McIntyre thanks for watching! It's mostly just planning. Not too difficult of a project.
great video really love it, going attempt with my garage this week, can you tell me which stain/pain you're using during the process.
Alex Vo we used prefinished plywood. It was a little more expensive but we Didn't want to mess around with painting or staining.
Very nice, thank you for sharing. :)
you betcha!
Darn good job. Looks good. Good commentary.
Thank you for your positive feedback!
Seriously great video! May I ask what type of ply and hinges you used for your doors? Is that 3/4” ply?
Thanks! It is prefinished half inch maple plywood. You can find the hinges in the video description
love the title and the video was entertaining
Roomies Garage thanks for the feedback! Subscribe for more!!!
I thought about doing this same project. Have the plywood doors warped at all since the project has been done?
They have been mostly ok. There I one door that has bent out at the bottom about an inch or two.
Great video! My carpentry skills are at a beginner’s level. I’m wondering if doing this is within my capability. I’d love to do it.
Thanks! If you stop at the basic 2x4 shelf stage this is a super easy beginners project. The finishing with plywood might be a bit more tricky, but anybody can do it with practice and some patience.
Davysprocket213 so how did they come out.
CAUTION: Consumption of beverages while watching this video may lead to Olfactory Inundation. ( you might squirt milk out yer nose from laughing too hard!!!) I'm just sayin'.... :-p
Thanks for watching xD
I like the simplicity and durability of the design! I'm in process of making my materials list and have read all of the previous comments (and smarta$$ ones too!). I've landed on using 2x4's for shelving as well given the lower cost AND ability to remove them for taller items if/when needed. Can you please tell me the distance between your framed 2x4's toward the front of the unit? Did you determine there was a better measurement for adding doors and lowering the overall cost? Just curious and thanks for sharing your project! I especially liked how you finished the doors with trim to dress it up!!!
Thanks! The depth of the shelves is 2 feet. The width was determined by the fact that I was making the doors with prefinished plywood. I got a 4‘ x 8‘ sheet of plywood and cut it right in half to make each door 2 feet wide and then sectioned off an upper shelf and larger lower section. The 2x4s certainly have come in handy! I had to remove most of one section to accommodate a water softener and was very thankful I didn’t go with plywood shelves!
@@Hubbmade thanks for the fast reply Ryan! I figured as much re: 2' depth and doors to make it easier on the overall cutting. I'm a novice when it comes to adding the doors. If you know off-hand the recommend spacing/distance between your upright 2x4's that would be helpful. If you followed the good ol' 16" OC then that makes sense. Just didn't want to get too far down the path and then start undoing what I built. Thanks again!
Sorry, I could have been more clear. The only upright 2 x 4 supports are every 4 feet plus a few inches to account for the hinges. If you were worried about support you could do them every 2 feet so there is a 2 x 4 right in the middle of where the doors open but I don’t think it’s necessary
@@Hubbmade that's what I "assumed", but we all know what happens when you do that. ;)
Thanks again for sharing and have a great day!
Could you tell me how you managed to get the shelf pieces to move by themselves? What's the tip, please???
Great video! I love this and you inspired me to make my own. I have one ❓ What molding did you use?
Thanks for watching! It is just a very simple wooden molding from the big box store. Nothin fancy
@@Hubbmade I would like to know if that's ok with you.
What I meant is that it’s just a generic round over molding. Just pick one that is cheap that you like. here is a link to a similar one at Lowe’s

Awesome job I'm going to do the exact same thing
Excellent! No safety googles when using the mitre saw 😮
Love the idea. Have watched your video with my wife and she wants me to construct the storage in our garage. What kind of plywood did you use for the doors? They look great.
Thanks! Prefinished half-inch plywood. I think it was maple but you can get all kinds of prefinished plywood
Looks amazing! What type of plywood did you use?
Prefinished half-inch pine plywood. The prefinished saved me a ton of time and it’s lasted really well!
that project reallly came out nice. l have two questions, why not just plywood for the shelves instead of all those short pieces of 2x4's? does the molding interfere with eachother when the you go to open a door? those hinges have to allow the door to really swing out before they touch. just wondering if that was an issue.
See other comments about plywood. Yes, If I was going to do it again, plywood would be better. The hinges I used prevent the moulding from rubbing together when you open the door, however, you can only open one door at a time. when I try to open two back-to-back doors they do rub together... not a big deal though. thanks for watching!
How did you do it so that the plywood edging on the right side doesnt show?
You can see the edging if you open the doors. They are covered by the molding from outside. Since they are just garage shelves I didn’t mind seeing some plywood edges
Great video! What kind of plywood did you use for the doors?
I really enjoyed your shelf building project with doors. I am starting a project similar to this right now. I'm planning on using 3/4" plywood for the doors. Is that what you used? What is the width of your doors? Again, thank you!
Doors are 2 feet wide. I used 1/2 inch plywood for the doors but it was just barely thick enough to drill for the hinges. 3/4 would be good but you may need to use different hinges to account for the weight and how they open. something like this: amzn.to/2k03Rf7 (although I've never used this hinge) Good luck, ask me if you have more questions!
I couldn't reply to your other comment because of the link, but I think those hinges would work. There again, though, you might be better off with 1/2 plywood because of how much a 3/4 inch door would stick out from the face of the cabinet. but either one would work with those hinges if you get screws short enough not to go all the way through.
Hubbard's Handmade thank you very much!
I enjoyed your video!!! how long did this actually take??? how long did it take to video the dancing 2X4's? are you able to laugh at your wife's bloopers? Keep up the great work!
Glad you enjoyed it! We always have a lot of laughs around my house/shop! The shelf construction was done in a weekend plus a few hours throughout the next week. It’s not too difficult of a project... stop motion on the other hand is… Time consuming!
I built a framing wall inside the pole barn garage, totally forgetting about the door, and the realized how hard it was going to be to install. I got around it by maneuvering. Keep in mind there was a truck in process of restoration in the way, with no wheels, so I couldn't move the truck. I actually hoisted the wall over the truck to get it in place.
Man, I've been there... little mistakes and oversights sometimes add up to more work and pain! Most of my challenges are all my fault!
Excellent
you make this look way easier then it is. :)
Patrick Sanders you did see the part where the camera stand broke, right? And also the part where I measured the front face frame incorrectly? Just making sure… xD
Hubbard's Handmade turned out really good. building some shelves in a open closet space, found this very helpful. cheers :)
wonderful to hear!
Hubbard's Handmade you made me thero at my job. i do maintenance. turned out beautify. thanks for taking the time to create this.
Patrick Sanders that's fantastic! Thank you for the kind words!
Any issues with the plywood warping? Was it successful in keeping the dust out? My wife complains about the same thing but I'm wondering if I would have to put a weatherstripping around the door to truly keep everything dust free.
No problem with warping. A little bit of dust still gets in though so some weatherstripping around the edges it’s a good idea!
Does the lumber that touches the concrete need to be pressure treated??
Good stuff man
Thanks for watching!
Next time you use those European hinges, put both in the holes, then put a straight edge (level, carpenters square etc) actoss the back of each to ensure they are parallel to each other and not binding. The way you did it, follows the top and bottom of the doors, not necessarilly parallel.
Great tip, thanks!
Wht kind plywood u use for doors
How much would a project like this cost?
