Bear Mountain Builds has a similar storage shelf. The only difference is, he screws his back support legs into the studs making it less likely to everr tip over. Just another idea.
Absolutely LOVE the simplicity of this build! As an newbie looking to build out my first shelf this is perfect. One little finishing touch I plan on putting on mine are locking wheels so I can move these shelves around as needed whenever we want/need to rearrange the layout.
Really nice and straightforward design. Some say it is overbuilt but I'd rather have it that way, knowing I can put whatever I need on it. Great job on the video and walking through that assembly. I was looking for something like this as I need to organize several containers and boxes. I'm going to give this a shot!
First Class Presentation! I have been intending to organise the contents of my garage for some time, but kept delaying the work, as it became more cluttered, and assembling products on sale were not ideal, or too costly. However your excellent clip brought home some practical instructions on tackling the task, and the project work has finally been put in my diary to secure the required / advised items, and time. Thank you!
The Jack studs supporting your shelf frames are smart. The shelf frames themselves I see can be rearranged later to different height configurations by merely resizing the Jack stud lengths (just use screws in lieu of glue for that option). Heavy duty. Adaptable. Nice 👍
I use to go crazy with wood glue and glue everything together but when I started needing to recycle my projects I realized what a PIA it is. Now I only use glue when it's absolutely necessary. For this project for instance, I would've skipped on the glue completely.
Yeah, skip the glue and jack studs altogether. Use cutoffs to make four spacers to accurately position each shelf from the one below, then just screw them in place and be done. Saves time and money and the result is the same.
This is just the kind of thing I was looking for. Great production values; well paced, well narrated and easy to follow. I’m going to build a couple of these for my brick shed and am wondering whether I should fix them to the wall. Happy to be a new subscriber from over the pond 🇬🇧
Thanks for subscribing! We should’ve mentioned it in the video, but we do definitely recommend securing it to the wall to be safe. Glad it was helpful!
Like you said, the home depot (or SAMS) cost about $200 dollars, so once you factor paint as well (not to mention 1000 pound rating per shelf), then its not that much of savings. I wonder what other projects would be more profitable for the amateur carpenter ? Like some wood work you could sell to your neighbors or even online.
This is definitely the style of shelving I’m looking for. Since it’s only going into a storage unit, I would appreciate your “plans” so I can build the same. Thanks in advance.
These look like pretty good shelves, but I don't think the liquid nails or glue on the legs is necessary. There is nothing that will tend to pull the OSB from the frames, and there is nothing that will pull the supports from the legs. The unit would be just as strong if it were just screwed together, and in the future, when you decide to change things up ( like we all do ) it would come apart easily and the materials could be reused. It looks great.... Just a little more effort and cost than necessary.
I would be greatful if you could please share these plans. I like your video, i have hi hopes that my son & myself can do this in my garage. Thank you...
Nice shelving but a bit over engineered. I think they can be done even more cost effectively. The jack studs could be totally eliminated, or you could use 1x4's instead of 2x4's. The compression strength is more than strong enough. They are primarily spacers anyway. The shelves themselves could be constructed with 1x4's as well. Granted, they wouldn't be as heavy duty but good enough. I have heavily loaded shelves that are just 1x12 pine mounted on those flimsy zigzag braces that can hold a heck of a lot of weight. Also, don't forget to anchor the shelves to the wall studs. Free standing shelves are a disaster just waiting to happen. Especially when the kiddos decide to climb up to get something on the top shelf.
I keep seeing this design. And I can't help think it's way over engineered. I thought of building something like this, and ended up buying a flimsy solution from Ikea, that is less than a 1x3. And it holds up fairly well. How much cheaper would a 1x4 single layer post design have been?
Hi, I've just seen your video on UA-cam which was really beneficial. I've downloaded your instructions. I'm going to the store which I will buy the material and also they will cut the wood. What sizes do I ask them for. Can you send me the sizes so I can just show them and they can cut to size and provide me the materials. Many thanks.
I think the glue was probably over kill. I’m sure screws alone would be enough and (as someone else pointed out) it would allow you to more easily take it apart if needed. Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!
Im not the most mechanically gifted person out there. If you are willing to share the plans with me I would love to make these exact ones for my garage. This will be my first attempt as something like this.
Thanks for posting this video! Do you think 1x2 or 1x3 would work instead of 2x4? Looking to make it slimmer/lighter and I don’t need a lot of weight to support.
It really depends on what kind of wood you're using. Typical construction grade wood may start to warp and bend out of shape if you go so thin, but with hardwood you'd probably be okay using 1by's. Thanks for watching! Good luck on your project!
Do you think that I could have the hardware store cut the pieces for me so that all I have to do is assemble them? I don’t have a saw but I do have the space to put it together, screws and drill. I’m just trying to really really minimize my cost.
For sure! Most home improvement stores can make cuts for you. They most often charge a cutting fee, but it's usually pretty affordable. Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!
I’ve just built this with just a drill, impact driver and jigsaw. Not too specialist as I’m just starting out doing my own projects. My local DIY shop cut the OSB board to the size I wanted free of charge when I purchased it.
Why did this require 2 sheets of OSB? I think your cost had an extra 25 USD. And judging by the edge paint on the OSB sheets, you oriented the strength axis incorrectly. If I'm not mistaken, then orienting your cuts correctly would increase the OSB strength by about 300% and its stiffness by about 400%.
Hey all do you think it is overkill please send me your plan. I like it is sturdy but I do not like the glue part. I like if it is less material if you may have.
You don't have to use glue imo for post. I've built aquarium stands for 100+ gal tanks very similar to this, it can easily hold 1000 pounds per shelf. This is a an extremely solid shelf build.
hi I'm a architect , I highly interested to work with you .I can design all type furniture ,cabinet, kitchen, bathroom , bed room with high quality render image in 3ds max , if you want I will send you my previous work portfolio
I think this is a heavy duty shelf and is overkill for what most people will use it for which is just very lightweight stuff. You'll want to use less wood and make the whole thing small so that it is easy to move around when you need to relocate things.
"Most people" means that there are still "some people" who this works perfectly for. Assuming what other people's needs are for them is not really necessary. Why not just enjoy and appreciate the video and the effort?

Great easy build and ridiculously strong.
Thanks. I built one using your design. Quick. Cut the pieces. Put them together. Easy.

A brilliant design with ease of construction. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Glad you appreciated!
Great how-to video. I am needing heavy-duty shelving for home canning, so this gave me ideas I need to incorporate.
Glad it was helpful!
Great design. I'd highly recommend securing that mamma jamma to the wall though. You don't want somebody pulling that thing down on top of themselves.

Sturdy!
Overkill, but, good stuff!
The OSB won't sag.
Can you use 2 x 3 s for this project, or is the strength of the 2 x 4 much better? How do you know how much weight you can have on the shelves?
I think this would definitely work for my storage needs. I’m a first time beginner. Would you mind sharing your plans?

So cool! Whats the name of the software you used to draw your project?
thanks! Glad you found it helpful. It's called Sketchup and they have a free version you can use online.
Did you secure them to the studs once in place to prevent tipping or racking?
We did! Good point - we should definitely have mentioned that in the video. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!
Would there be a structural difference between putting the legs on the outside vs the front and back?
the bearing of the main beams would be shorter, so it is less robust, but in reality it's probably going to be perfectly fine

It’s called Sketchup. It’s fairly easy to learn and you can use a web-based version for free
nice, but right now amazon has the metal 5 shelf for $50.00
what's the blue edging on the osb?

Is there a reason why you cut the wood to 72’ instead of just leaving it factory at 96”??
It was just because of height limitations in our shed, but if you have the space to go all the way up - go for it!
@ thanks for the speedy response! Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t for a different reason! Thanks
I’m interested in doing this in my basement also. Plans please?

Thumbs down. This is a ripoff from Bear Mountain Builds "Simple and Strong Garage Storage Shelves".
It's not even close... Bear Mountain builds it permanently attached to the wall and uses pocket holes....
Way over built. That shelf could hold up,a tank
