I have many expensive knives in my collection. For some reason I love my Ace. It is my EDC. I have worn it daily for over 8 years now and the original plastic sheath (which I love for some reason) is still perfect, although the SOG symbol has worn off. Last year, my local Walmart had these on clearance for 4.99! So I had to buy all of them (6 in total)!
I got the SOG field knife a few years ago. Really good everyday carry, job sites, hunting, fishing, bushcraft, campsite, does it all well. Edge retention has been better than I expected. Love the handle grip. For the money ya can't go wrong. Oh and no rust , just wipe it off. A little gun oil and it's good to go.
Purchased the Field Knife a few months back. It’s decent for what it is. I use it for tactical purposes. The sheath leaves much to be desired and I’ve had it come off my belt during rolling drills. But again for a $20 knife it’s fine. Once I have a few extra bucks to spend I’ll switch it out for a seal pup. If I had the money I’d go for the SOG Pillar. But for what it is the Field knife does fine. It’s the Savage Arms of knives.
My fieldknife is in a bugoutbag in the car, but it gets some use from time to time. You are right about the steel, really soft thanks for the review Aaron
I haven't had the problems of edge rolling/chipping with hollow grinds like so many others report. For years all I had was Buck knives (hollow grinds), so maybe the better steel is the reason I haven't had those problems. Either one on the knives shown would put a big smile on a young man's face Christmas morning. Polymer sheath's are safer and more robust than leather or nylon, especially for young men. I am surprised they are only $20 with the SOG name, no matter where they are made. Thanks for showing them.
I took the Field Knife out on a multi day hike. I found it to be too light to be used for pounding in tent stakes. It did however work ok for cuttings nylon straps and line. What I really don't like about it is that the handle has a ridge around it that presses into the meat of my thumb uncomfortably.
I just picked up a Ace for 18 bucks at a flea market. I have to agree the Ace is cooler! It cuts sticks alright but I feel the thing is the tactical look to it. I was in the military for a little over 15 years and used many knives the blade shape is just familiar to me is it the best feild knife no but when you have used this shape of blade before it because familiar and you understand its limits and how to effectively use the knife.
Great video informative. I have three more heavy-duty companions 2 for different backpacks. And a SOG seal pup. Just for day hiking or if I need one. And they work great. The one more knife I have I use for yard work doing Plumbing in the woods beside my house it's had a lot of hard use and it's still cutting
Got a gift card to a sporting goods store while in high school, got the field knife and used it all the time untill I got an Esee 4. It’s extremely comfortable and while the blade doesn’t stay sharp terribly long it’s very easy to get a hair trimming edge on it. Most of the time now it sits in my car and it’s definitely nice to have something larger and tougher always tucked away in the center console
Nice review! I just recently picked one of these up for an ultralight, ultracompact fixed blade option for more minimalist backpacking, as opposed to my Gerber strongarm which is my typical outdoors/survival knife. I always mount my knives to the waist belt on my packs and I don't like the lack of mounting options with the sheaths on the Mora knives. My HOPE was that the field knife would hold up to VERY OCCASIONAL batoning and emergency batoning and this review is reassuring 🙏🏽🤙🏽. I know the steel is junk by steel snob standards, but my thought is that it should be sufficient for occasional lightweight use and ultimately... If I need to replace it every few years... I paid $26. I'll just replace it
I carried my Sog Field Knife for several months last year as a utility knife on my farm/ranch. Nice knife for the price and I wanted to test it a little. However I noticed rust creeping out of the handle at the base of the blade after a couple of months. The one thing I don't like is that cutting slot on the sheath. While walking the string on my compound bow entered the slot. It was not pretty. I immidiately placed a ranger band over it. My normal daily carry blade is a Mora Bushcraft Black in a kydex cross draw sheath.
best reason to get a cheap knife is if you think you might need it someday but its definitely not going to get heavy use, like maybe something to leave in your garden shack, or an emergency kit or bug-out bag. In which case I think the $8.95 Mora is the best choice.
For 5 bucks the sog Ace is great. Only issue was the sheath came with many defects around the logo. That being said I do think the field knife looks better. I like that beefy exposed tang. That being said the Ace handle looks not so nice but it feels comfortable.
I have the ACE and have for about 2 years, Its actually taken all the abuse I've put it through which I'm surprised by. I would recommend it for anyone on a hard budget for a kind of a jack of all trades knife. Its also light enough to wear around with basketball shorts or pj pants inside the waist ... If they redid it with their cryo quenched AUS-8 or a 12cr28n for under 40$ I would throw my money at them.
Re. sheaths. I have the SOG Field knife, but didnt like the tactical sheath. (sits too high, and feels unbalanced, although I realize this conceals the knife much better) For 20 bucks on Amazon I bought a Cold Steel Pendleton Lite Hunter - just for the sheath - The SOG fits perfectly, actually a bit better than the Cold Steel! And also to Gideonstactical ....LOVE your videos!
I got a field knife in some subscription box a while ago.. it was in a blister pack and didn’t even open it for a long time… well, I finally got around to it.. oh man! That is the most comfortable knife I’ve ever held! So impressed with the rubber grip! Only wish they made one in much better steel while keeping the rubber grip… not the Pillar!
The ace i picked up has 8cr13mov. I like my moras but the ace feels more fun to just play around with. Was trying to find something stainless styled a bit more like a RAT-3.
@@gideonstactical From a local sporting goods store (sportsman warehouse). Looks like most sites sell the 7cr version. Had it been 7cr i dont think i would have bought it.
Cool! I think that I like the Ace for some reason. I have the Mora knives and I'm not in the market for a knife, but if I were I would probably get the Ace... Great review!
I own Moras too and I can rave all day how great they are but they don't come with full flat grind like this SOG does. I think this full flat grind is better overall for multi purpose use.
I would take this blade ( ACE ) backpacking instead of a Mora. I like FFG and at that price point I don't care if I misplace it or have to borrow it to a friend on the field. I like it.
Seems the Marttini Condor Timber Jack keeps getting dropped in these comparisons. I still think Marttini does a better job on their grinds than anybody else on the budget end.
I'm looking at these knives because I got a gift card to a large retailer that doesn't have mora available on their website and out of the budget options SOG are probably about as good as I'm going to get (alongside some wool socks). Not that I need any more knives but free is free.
Great vid/review. Just bought one for EDC at the ranch. Im surprised at your experience/opinion on the field pup. I've had one for years (previous EDC ranch knife), that things been through MANY deer/pigs, including ribs and joints, and has always performed well. Regardless, again great review
I will probably buy the Field Knife but I know what you mean - the Ace's blade is fatter in shape and looks more "Survival-ish." But, I'm not going style over substance on this one.
4116 is no match for 7cr17 mov, which is definitely superior to 8cr13mov. A steel composition chart is adequate to show the difference between 1.4116 Thyson Krupp stainless and 7cr17mov. Experience shows me 8cr13 mov is inferior even to 5cr15 mov on CRKTs S.P.E.W. so I would take 7cr17 over 8cr13 without even trying the 7cr first. The ACE is definitely cooler. I may update this comment with any updates on this steel. Got one on the way.
Great review! I'm liking that Field knife for a tough little fixed blade beater. I don't get the popularity of those weird looking partial tang Mora's though.
My Ace falls right out of the sheath. I actually Like things like FFG and rust resistance, call me a weirdo, but I can't carry a knife that isn't secure, bummer.

Same thing with me.
Wow that's impressive, but it'd be awesome if they released a premium version of these nice cheapies

That functional choil, flat grind, and belly do it for me.
I got the Ace for 5 dollars on clearance and there’s definitely something about it, I agree.
Glad I read your comment. I was contemplating the 25 bucks for it but after reading this I looked it up on Walmart and got two for 10 bucks.
I’ve just picked up an Ace, looking forward to using it. Thanks for your review.
7cr is with a good heat treat (Gerber flatiron in my experience) holds an edge as well if not slightly better than kershaws 8cr.
"The reasons you're looking at these knives is..."
What is "you've never heard of Mora?" for $100, Alex.
My fieldknife is in a bugoutbag in the car, but it gets some use from time to time. You are right about the steel, really soft

Hey man cool video! I agree, there’s something I just “ connect” with more with the Ace! Idk what it is exactly. Nice review 👍

Bought five SOG Ace knives at Walmart for $5 each on clearance. Fine for car kits.

I like mora but there sheaths kind of suck. I wish more people would make pocket clips instead of belt loops on the sheaths or paddle style

Great video, on your recommendation I decided to get the Mora Companion HD instead of the SOG Ace. Do you have any full reviews on the Moraknivs?
is the giant SOG logo part of the unexplained uncoolness?

I got the ace and I’ve put it to hell and back and it’s held together very well
That's exactly what I was thinking when watching the video. Field is better, Ace looks cooler. Ace looks cool to edc as well.
Got the Ace at Cabelas in a combo pack with a keychain tool for 20. On the one I got it said 8cr13mov on the package.
Yes, my package read the same thing also, so why are these reviews saying differently?
I have the field knife and its a great knife for edc and typical everyday use and is pretty darn tough

Every now and then big5 wil have them for sale at $12.99.
Found the ace at walmart on clearance for $7 only reason I bought it was to throw in a emergency car get home bag
The sog ace is the butter knife of all sog knives....the sog ace I got was duller then a day in traffic school
I own 8 mora’s. Only SOG I own is a Sogfari. I cant say enough good things about my Moras.
I own Moras too and I can rave all day how great they are but they don't come with full flat grind like this SOG does. I think this full flat grind is better overall for multi purpose use.
Great that you do videos cutting rubber and things like that. And also great you test the knifes also with gloves on.
However none of the moras are full tang which is why I prefer the dog at times over the mora
I own a dog field knife and I have a bur in the same spot he got one, I think they are generally thinner in that spot

The SOG field knife is a great little knife to throw in the trunk of the car, really is a decent knife, just not for heavy use.
I could understand why u would get confused between the two. Yes, ur choice of words, one is better but the other is cooler
I think we are still waiting on that SEAL Pup and Pillar in the same video 😀
I read some bad reviews. SOG Field Knife "Tang BROKE while using" WTF
I can't speak for the field knife but I own the field pup and while ugly its a tough lil SOB in my experience. :)
