  • Triumph has really stepped up their game with the newest 900 Tiger. The changes may look small on paper but on the bike they are much larger.

I rode the 2024 and 2023 Tiger Rally Pro bikes back to back a few days ago. Immediately I noted the seating position is naturally further back on the 2024 due to not only the handle bars being 15mm closer to the rider but also because the foot pegs are (10mm) further back. It makes the bike feel like steering more with the rear like an off-road bike than with the front like a street bike. The 2024 feels easier to ride all round and the rubber mounted handle bars coupled with the new free revving motor makes the bike feel less strained at highway speeds.

Thank you!! I have an older Triumpgh 1050 Tiger Sport, and I love it, but it's definitely time to upgrade and this has so helped me to finally make a decision🙏 I looked at the 2023 and I'm now soooo glad i hesitated. Thank you😊👍

Thanks Brett for the impressions. I take delivery of a new 900 Rally Pro in the next few weeks. I have a Tiger 800 which I really like but the 2024 900 is a huge step up. Well done Triumph for listening to customers and sorting the dash, power and vibes on the 2020-23 versions. Sure to be a winner this updated model.

@@MrBerry67 Hi, I did consider the
1200. I am 5’7” and 75kgs and the 1200 felt tall and heavy for me. The 900 is plenty powerful even two-up, fully loaded (my 800 is a little lacking here). Lastly, my mates ride middle weight adventure bikes (KTM 790/890’s and KLR650’s) and the 1200 just won’t cut it with them when we venture off road. For me, the 2024 900 RP fits the bill perfectly. And after a long sealed road ride home, I know who is the most comfortable! Perhaps in Europe, if you’re doing long high speed motorway miles fully loaded, two up and need 150hp to hold 200km/h, then the 1200 might be the way to go 🙏

I have the old 900 RP (in green-white of course) and I love it. It is an excellent bike that does everything. There isn't really anything I miss.
Although.... she doesn't like to crash. And that always worries you a little bit and holds you back. "Explore that dodgy looking sidetrack over there? Nah... another day, sure."
When she falls, she falls hard. It can bend the handlebars or twist the cockpit. The Triumph crash bars don't take much force and it doesn't take much to dent the tank, which costs 900€.
She's very, very capable, don't get me wrong. But you should also be a capable rider so as not to drop her too often.

I had a strange engine noise on my 22 model. I took it to my dealer who also noticed the problem. They couldn't resolve it. The dealer took it to the Triumph importer in Auckland who did nothing. I even contacted Triumph Uk; next to useless as well. I ended up trading it in for a new 900 24 RP and then had to wait the best part of the summer for it.
I did have to pay an eye-watering amount of money for the delta, but I just couldn't face legal action against my dealer. I finally have my new bike and Brett is right, the engine is smoother, it just feels like a totally new model compared with my 2 years old model.
Maybe I had a lemon before. I must say that having been a Triumph owner in the UK many years ago, I never experienced warranty issues there. The New Zealand importer doesn't give Triumph a good name, in fact my experience shows they simply don't cate enough about the brand they represent.

The class where most of it is on BDR like trails and roads. Great class would highly recommend it. Took it on the new 1200RE.

I had just sent you an email last night offering my 2024 RP if you needed to finish your review and to my pleasant surprise I see this video pop up. I just picked up the RP yesterday so I haven't had a chance to really ride it yet. Weather is turning nasty this next week in North Georgia, so I'll have to be patient. However, I am one with a short inseam (30") and am able to comfortably get my feet down (not flat footed, but a good contact nevertheless). I was surprised that it felt less top heavy than my 2019 650 V-Strom. I do like the handlebar position and that the handlebar is fairly straight (not curved like the GT).

I started my Adventure bike journey with a 2018 KTM 1290 SAR. After 5 years realizing the bike was too big in a lot of ways I traded for a Husky 701. As I'm getting older in a few years from now I'll probably be looking at a mid size bike and this so far looks to be in the running with a few others. At least this bike is appealing to the eye.

I owned a Tracer 9GT, an MT09 on stilts that gets scared when faced a speck of dust on the road. And really it was dull.
(Not so with my Speed Twin 1200. Oh regarding gravel yes, but dull it is not.)
Long story short. Today I visited my dealer here in Gävle Sweden (yes Very snowy and icy) and my salesman started up the 900 Rally Pro… my Goodness that throaty angry sound! Awesome!!! He and I wondered what it will sound like with an Akra system! I’m sold and a down payment will be transferred for a green one.
    Thanks for the up!

Thanks for the video Brett, useful and helpful as always! I have short inseam and thinking in a KTM 890 adventure or this Triumph... I believe many riders that combine off road adventures with commuting and some duo weekend ride might have the same question!

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs  5 місяців тому +1

The 890 does have "GS" like balance which is very helpful if you are shorter. The Triumph is MUCH better at heat management and more comfortable on the road. I would test both, make an honest assessment of your riding needs and then decide.

Great vid! Triumph dealer is letting me know when they get them here near Atlanta. Excited to ride it. Wanna start doing way more off road. So I’m also going to look at a 2021 890 R Rally with 1100 miles on it. The 890 is super clean and is the owner of the dealerships bike, he keeps in the showroom, so I’m conflicted. Worried about the KTM gremlins. My current 2020 Tiger 1200 has been bulletproof so I’m definitely leaning towards another Triumph.

2:30 My aprilia tuareg 660 stays in off road mode with rear abs disabled when you cycle the key. Also you don't have to stop to switch to off road mode from road mode, also you can adjust traction control on the fly, it's nice having adjustable traction control, not just one setting like the tiger.

High praise from you for this bike would ordinarily land the Triumph on my list of possible contenders for my next bike. What keeps it off my list, at least as a new bike, is Triumph's warranty.
Under "Conditions And Exclusions" the warranty states "1. The machine must not have been used for competition, misused*, inadequately maintained, or incorrectly serviced or maintained."
"Misused" being the operative word here.
Then under "Service Records" the official warranty states "*Misuse includes any use not in accordance with the recommendations made in the ’how to ride the motorcycle’ section of the owner's handbook and any use contrary to the warnings given in that same handbook. In addition, misuse will include, but not be limited to any use of the motorcycle which does not constitute normal road use."
The last sentence basically says that the warranty excludes "misuse", so anything other than "normal road use". Take it off road and you cancel the warranty. Makes no sense to me.
Husqvarna's warranty (looking at the 901 Expedition) does not have that limitation and neither does BMW (will look at the new 900GS when out)

KTM has been the leader in off-road electric riders enhancments in my opinion but that gap has closed in the last couple of years with Ducati jumping in. (Ducati is still behind in offroad ABS tech though).
Triumph was horrendous with it's off-road tech when it emerged in 2015. It was seamless on the 2024. I still like having more control over each setting than just general settings like Triumph, BMW and others.
Ducati seems to the the best at individualized settings with KTM just behind (KTM still has the best offroad electronics performance though).

I’ve got 22k miles on my ‘21 Rally Pro. Prolly 10k of that dirt mountain roads. Have pretty much figured out all my setups for off-road, on road, touring. I moto-camped for 9 weeks last year (zero hotels/motels). Every rider’s fitment will be different. And I think I have mine pretty dialed in.
Rode to my local Triumph dealer yesterday, actually to check out the new 400 scrambler which is now delayed months (Thanks to Houthi radicals bringing all shipping through the red sea and Suez canal to a standstill). So no 400’s for a bit. I was looking to add a small fun bike to my stable for visitors.
But they had just PDI’d the ‘24 Tiger 900’s. They didn’t have a demo to ride yet, but I was able to side-by-side some things. Ok… horsepower and torque. The first gen 900’s needed to be able to be restricted for EU. You could have your Tiger detuned to 47hp while you put in your time and miles. But the EU limited max hp to 94 for “Configurable” bikes. In the fuel mapping, the ecu restricted max throttle opening above 7,500rpm thereby limiting max hp. So opening up that restriction, viola, more hp. Something that can be done with tweaks to the map. Also a much better flowing exhaust (just a look at the header tells you this). The sales person, also rides a first gen, and we both agreed…we would GLADLY pay like $1,500 for the upgraded TFT.
I’ve worked out my setups in the ride modes, dialing them into my preferences. I’ve gone through enough tires to find what works for me. When they have a demo ready, they’ll give me a heads up. But it would be a tarmac only ride as they are many miles from any of the mountains I ride in.
I chose my Rally Pro because IMHO it represented the best ALL ROUND adventure bike on the market, and not by a little, by A LOT. When I took the time to really concentrate on adjusting it to the riding conditions and my riding style, it has become quite an amazing machine.
I can’t think of another bike that would better cover one of my loops I like to call “Shake and Bake”. It’s about 175 miles. Covering over 31,000 feet of elevation changes, 80 miles of mountain dirt atv/4x4 roads, AND the Tail of the Dragon thrown in just because.
To put a new gen 2 Rally Pro together with what I consider essential gear, I’d be over $21k otd. If it were cosmically better than my gen 1, kinda like my RP was to the 800XC, I might consider it.
In the end, if the new bike gets the respect that the gen 1 failed to garner, all the better.
Looking forward to a full review.

I owned a 900 Rally Pro which I sold last year due to major reliability issues - three warranty claims: 1. Wheel failure; 2. Gearbox failure; 3. Complete ignition failure and rewire. To be fair, the Triumph warranty covered all the problems, albeit the bike was off the road for weeks at a time. And to be honest, I completely loved the bike, riding over 18,000 miles in 2 years. Maybe, I had a 'Friday' bike, but it has put me off buying another Tiger.

Thank you for the review, still some questions.
    - isnt the norden expedition 901 not competitive priced (also with heated seat, grips and a oem bashplate that is offroad worthy.
    - In the Netherlands we have a lot of short stretches of offroad sections so you need to change ride mode easily. Or it should be easy to turn ABS off on the rear wheels. Am I correct that it is only possible to change ride modes when standing still, even with the short cuts? Because that makes the bike unusable for me. Is it possible to change ABS mode when riding?

My only comment would be how does it compare to the Norden 901 on the dirt Brett. We know that Triumph have consistently made motorcycles with impeccable road manners and are very well appointed. So, is the dirt handling a difference? That low-slung saddle fuel tank on the Huskies and KTM 's sure make a difference when low speed handling on broken surfaces. It the new Tiger 900 top heavy, or does it hide its weight very well?

I'm also confused about the display. The previous one had too small RPMs, it was hard to see. I hit rev limiter a few times because of that on my test ride.
This new screen again looks weird. Revs shown in red, close to redline is marked in red, and redline itself is marked red. It doesn't seem like not hitting rev limiter will be any easier with this display.
Plus it should just let you display some things permanently on display like A trip kilometres, etc. The screen is so big, plenty of space.
Also, now we get only two styles. Why can't we get 4 like in Honda Transalp? So everyone would find something they like. The weird part is, that it's just a design, it's not like actually making hardware to send inputs, this part works no matter what design is used.
