Going over rail road tracks and feeling the suspension drop out from under the truck was probably enough to trigger it. Likely Triumph has done something simular.
Nice format Bret. Good fun. You had it nailed with the comment: “If I only had one bike, it would be the Tiger”. I’ve done 2,500kms in the two weeks I’ve owned my 2024 Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Can’t stay off it. It’s a brilliant bike.
Hahaha... pure illusion of yours..., but that's ok, GS only increase in weight and size, one of these days a GS will reach 1500cc and impossible to ride off-road 👍👍😅🤣
After test riding both bikes I bought the 900 Rally Pro. The key points for me were stability at higher speeds on road (that steering damper on the Desert X is absolutely necessary), fuel consumption (the Ducati used twice the amount of fuel on exactly the same test route) and price. For similar a specification the Ducati was £5000 more expensive. The Tiger was also far more comfortable for me at 6’3”.
I will say this about the Ducati: I've ridden the Triumph 900, owned a GS1250, a 890R and now the Ducati DesertX. None of them are as easy and confidence inspiring in soft terrain like sand and mud as the Ducati. If you look at the geometry (rake, trail and wheel base) you'll understand why.
Went with Ducati desert x rally and have been really impressed with the first 7000kms….had a 23’ 1200 rally pro for a year and way to many electrical issues for me and pour fuelling….so didn’t want anything to do with the new 900….hopefully they get sorted….I have also found the Ducati electronics are by far the most advanced from all the bikes I’ve owned -KTM, Triumph, BMW….
Awesome awesome awesome, and I agreed, almost pulled the trigger on DesertX, but since I have a dirt bike went for Multi V4 rally, but if I am on the market today and new Tiger is out ( which wasn't last year) I would go definitely with Triumph, love the video tactics here, great job you guys, cheers V!
I have a Tiger 900 RP, and I found that the off road performance is significantly enhanced by adjusting the suspension for off road as per the manual. This seems to be little discussed in reviews, but it changes the rake angle, and made a real difference. I wonder if you have done the same, and whether you have any comment on the consequent performance?
Had a 900. LOVED IT! But I crashed it and broke the engine crank case or something like that. So I purchased the closest thing to it on the showroom floor. Tiger 1200 Rally Pro. Oh my GOODNESS. Best thing ever happened to me. Not a lot of difference in weight, a hella lot of difference in power, performance, vibration, and over all fun. Have ridden it all over America. On and off road. Now I wanna do it again. I love this (these, including the 900) bike. The 1200 is everything you want in a BMW GS without all the bulkiness.
I tried them both and ended up with ordering Tiger. Basically all pros and cons were said, however I would say that Desert X has very little of wind protection. Great video Gents!
Always enjoy watching your channel and hearing all the very knowledgeable points you make about each bike. In my mind, one major difference between the Rally Pro and Desert X is the steering damper on the Desert X. How much difference does it really make in a real world scenario and would it be possible to fit one to the Rally Pro?
The Tiger is an almost complete bike. The only thing missing, imho, is an electronically adjustable suspension. I love the bike, it's awesome. And I love the brand. ❤️ And yet, I'm gonna sell it. Whenever I come to my garage, without much thinking I always pick the other bike, a Husky 701. It doesn't have all the stuff, but it's just so much more FUN and makes me giggle all the time and I feel 20 years younger. 😅 Last year: 200km on the Tiger, 10,000km on the Husky. There's just no argument.
Thank you so much for the comparison video guys. I’ve been torn between the tiger rally pro and the BMW 900 GS. Even though this was a comparison with a Ducati, I think it helped me make a more informed decision.
@@willurban837 yes I am going for the 2024 tiger rallyPro. Around 85 to 90% of my use is going to be on the pavement. However, I also live in Washington and love having accessibility to the mountains and forestry roads so I think this is a perfect pairing with my 4Runner. There was a lot of technical reasons that I chose the 2024 rally pro but you’re just getting so much for the value.
@@Lejokerjosh nice, bmw Thailand is making it easy for me by not offering the f900gs 2024 until November. After a happy test ride I will be going for the tiger as well!
Would be interested to see a comparison with the new F900 GS.. I'm not a huge BMW guy, but that new 900 looks the part. Maybe you can get a Tuareg 660 to try out at some point too. I've been having a lot of fun on mine :D
I have the Tuareg 660 and put 7,000 miles on it. I have only test driven the new Tiger 900 rally pro on pavement. The Tuareg seat does not agree with me for longer than 30-40 minutes, though others seem to like it. While riding, the Tiger feels just as light even though it is not. I feel significantly more refinement to the Tiger overall, and definitely more power even though the Tuareg's does not feel lacking. For sure I could do many more miles per day on the Tiger on pavement/gravel and feel much better at the end of it. The Tuareg had no problem doing it, it's just not comfortable seating, though I've done over 500 miles in around 9-10 hours with some rain. I cannot speak to the Tiger offroad. I hope that helps.
The only bike I own is a 2015 Triumph Tiger XCX 800 which I bloody love and the engine is beautiful. Out of the two on display in this video the only thing that would sway me to the Ducati is the aesthetics, it looks SICK. Other than that triumph every day of the week.
Agree. I own a DX but I wouldn’t want it as my only bike. Frankly the wind protection on it is poor coming off a GS. Haven’t ridden the updated tiger yet, but looks like good bang for your buck!
The mid range adventure bikes have really gotten competitive. I looked at the Triumph, Ducati, KTM, Aprilia and Husqvarna. All of them were feature loaded to the gills. The price range was all over the place. I eventually opted for the Norden 901 Expedition, but truthfully you really couldn't go wrong with any of the bikes in this category.
Any comments or thoughts on the different front fork rake angle? I get it that Triumph may not want to eat the cost of different tooling for different designs between the road vs offroad oriented Tiger. Does it really make any difference offroad compared to the Ducati or others? Thanks!
I really didn't notice any significant difference between the DDX and T9 Pro in handling other than the Showa suspension felt slightly better than the KYB. In 23' I'd say the DDX may have been the best OEM suspension of any middleweight... The T9 Pro now has a slight edge. As for fork angle... I don't care about the numbers if it works
Thanks for the analysis. I saw a review video where the rake angle was "partially" blamed for a gravel corner crash. Agreed. If it works, it works, is what matters!
One of the tricks they don't tell you about is that when riding off-road and you reduce rear preload and increase front, the angle actually increases and is more competent off-road
@spikejnz Interesting! It does make sense. I think I remember correctly that Ian with Big Rock Moto, on his Nevada BDR ran into a bunch of deep sand, and I think he increased front preload to try to help make it easier.

Good stuff…. Deal breaker for me on the Tiger 900 was the fact I would have to stop to change drive modes, are you kidding me! Bought a BMW 850GSA. More wind protection, more miles to a tank, a blast on the twisty pavement and a 3 year warranty. Fortunately I have another moto in my stable, a Tenere 700, simply a simple adventure moto… Haha! Knobby both my adventure motos up and ride em like I stole em! Ride on!
I had the Rally Pro for just over two years, eventually putting it in on a speedmaster. At 5’6” it was a little bit too tall for me, don’t get me wrong I took it over to Munich while working out there and Denmark while working out there taking in some long mileage (800+ miles) runs, but I was not confident in taking it off road, mainly due to the height and weight (oh i am 61 too). I have my eye on a possible 2nd bike, for some off road shenanigans and that is likely to be the Himalayan 450 when it eventually gets here in the UK. You never know, if I can work on my skill levels I may well get another tiger, I like the 1200 with its shaft drive, but they are even taller, may need some high heel boots lol
Hi Brett. Great video. I have a Desert X and can relate to your comments on the bike. Can you pls let me know what windshield you have put on yours. I’m not very tall (5 foot 8 inches) however I find the buffeting at 100km/hr very annoying. Looking forward to future videos.
Buffeting on Adventure bikes is horrible, I'm 5,8 also ride a Tiger with an adjustable screen, if it's high or low I still get buffeting so 5,8 or 6 foot you'll still have it.
I change modes on the go on my Multistrada quite a lot when i go out on a big adventure weekend or longer. I would hate having to stop to adjust the mode. Without this video, i may have bought it and been totally let down by that. No worries though, i am infatuated with the Toureg.
Great vid! Love the Tiger (have a -22) but really enjoyed riding a bike with the possibility to switch Offroad mode on/off on the go during a trip to spain last year... It is one of the few complaints I have about the Tiger.... DesertX looks awesome tthough!
I’m an old fart who’s not getting after the full lock power slides. I have a 22 GT Pro but between a generous Christmas bonus and the significant 24 improvements I’m going for the 24 Rally coming up here soon. These Tigers are such an easy, friendly ride. I’m hooked. Then, here in Idaho, the dealer is a significant factor. Quick comment on the passenger pegs. Don’t tell anyone, but I dropped my bike at a standstill and the passenger pegs plus bracket saved my Scorpion can. One last question. Just bought a pair of Alpinstar Tech 7 enduros. It’s like riding in my ski boots. Any tips on break in?
The Tech 7 is actually one of the more flexible enduro boots in toe flex, but the toe box is fairly thick. Most importantly you need to adjust your controls if you haven't already. ua-cam.com/video/aWU0owE8T8w/v-deo.htmlsi=jXGQHbAtWfEFrWUA
Not being able to switch riding modes on the fly is one of THE most annoying things about my Tiger. I know I can switch from off road back to road mode while riding by holding down the Mode button but super annoying that I have to stop to switch from road to off road. Also super annoying that I have to do this every time I turn off the bike as it starts in road mode.
Paul didn't love either seat but I liked both. The Tiger is definitely set up yo be more comfortable on long trips. Better airflow, heated seat and grips, centerstand for chain maintenance etc. I would ride either but given the choice I'd take the Tiger
I took my '22 Tiger 900 RP to Colorado, including riding Cumberland Pass, and spent a week riding it in total. At no point was I longing for an aftermarket seat, though I would def add a Sheepskin seat cover for long distance riding in a single day.
We didn't bring it up because they are nearly the same. Both have an 18k valve service and similar intervals on everything else. A desmo valve check is slightly more work because it has an opener and closer instead of just a closer.
I'd probably love to have either of them, but... for 18 grand plus all the fees the magicians at the dealership can pull from behind my ear, I'd rather buy two bikes. Like a Transalp and an XSR900 combined would only be a couple grand more than the Duc by itself with all the additional kit.
@@BretTkacs Oh, definitely. No argument there. They are friggin' sweet. It's just like buying tools though. Do I want to blow the bank on some absolutely top of the line tools, or do I want to blow half as much for tools that are 90% as good? In your case, it certainly makes sense to blow the wad on a absolutely sweet tool because you're going to use it just about all day every day, and it's a great tax deduction :D
good review; interesting comments. . which has service and parts i your area. Both are slow here. i'd pick the lightest one. like the 850 sport but its not available here ! so ....
These bikes are incredibly similar... It's really rider choice. The Ducati is more tunable foe people like me that like more control over settings, although most of the time the power is maxed out and everything is off or minimized. The Triumph is a better "do-everything" bike The Ducati's ABS is too sensitive in down hill technical off-road (but can be turned off). The Triumph lacks refinement in the off-road traction control in loose uphill or mud (but it can be turned off). Access to settings is much better on the Ducati
Not to mention the ridiculous service costs and the 40 minuete air filter change. If the tiger 900 is as smooth and capable as my old tiger 800. It would be Triumph all the way for me.
Most of the time I am full power, quick shifter on, traction control off, lift control off, off-road abs (or off). My Enduro mode is: low power, QS on, traction control 1, lift control off, off-road ABS.
I would probably grab the Triumph keys myself. One of the biggest gripes I have about anything Duccati is cost of ownership, more on point the cost of maintenance. Not necessarily shop costs, those are outrageous. Even if you turn your own wrenches on the bike the parts are all more expensive then they need to be and it's done on purpose to discourage people from doing their own work. On top of that, many of the go to after market brands don't have decent parts for most of the Duccoti like up. That said, I would rather something like a Honda 300 or 450 for a haul to the trail head dedicated off road bike. If I want to ride there, my R1250GSA. Yes, it's a touring bike. I will freely admit that, but the GSA still does what I need it to do even on single tracks.
I find it gear shift to close to pegs and and when up hill, heel landing on muffler on the right and pressing on the kick stand on the left on the duc not a deal breaker but I wonder if that can be resolved some how ?
Key difference for me is being able to maintain and service the bike at home. Ducati has made it so the owner is unable to do that, which is a hard stop for me even though I love the retro look of the DesertX over the 900RP.
@@BretTkacs The service notifications and CEL notifications are locked down a lot harder than other bikes, on the DesertX forums we're guessing about 2yrs until it's unlocked in a third party OBD software tool. In order to turn them off you need dealer tools and every visit means paying a dealer to do it. Most dealers will only reset it when doing an oil change, and that's an almost $400 charge to get done.
I hate bike 'reviews' They're mostly a summary of what the specsheet told us.. and in the end, it comes down to "both/all are good and it's a personal preference" This one was fun to watch though.. 😂
That's was a comparison and we did leave a lot out but I hate 45 min reviews. We did do individual reviews on the bikes... I normally try to skip the spec sheet and focus on what you can't read about.

Dammit, this making me lean to purchase another Tiger 900!

I just got a 2024 GTPro..I’ll take the Triumph all day 👍
When the bike in front is kicking up rocks , the last thing you want to hear from the rider is "EAT MY FEATURES"😂
Fun watching this, finally, not taking everything oh so serious with comparison video's.
Well done, as always!
That makes you a team DesertX guy 👍
Tried both a couple of days ago. The DesertX beats the Tiger at… everything. Except smoothness.
The Tiger is the more well rounded bike for sure
The triumph is a great bike, but if I had the choice to own a Ducati without having to pay for it I couldn’t pass on it tbh.
Win-win
The duke looks good tho
Which one would you choose to take on a 1000 mile trip? I heard the old 900 wasn't exactly pleasant on the tarmac for long distances.
At no point was I longing for an aftermarket seat, though I would def add a Sheepskin seat cover for long distance riding in a single day.
i’ve been reading that the Rally actually rides better on the road which is a bit of a surprise i think
So both will bring a big smile to your face? So pick the one that feels right to you!
Exactly
Always nice to see “Paul the Peeker” again
🤣🤣
I think service intervals and their relative costs would have been appropriate topics to be referenced.
We didn't bring it up because they are nearly the same. Both have an 18k valve service and similar intervals on everything else. A desmo valve check is slightly more work because it has an opener and closer instead of just a closer.
Great, this film is great, and you two are really funny giving informations
Really good video! Brazil is watching you! rsrs
I'd probably love to have either of them, but... for 18 grand plus all the fees the magicians at the dealership can pull from behind my ear, I'd rather buy two bikes. Like a Transalp and an XSR900 combined would only be a couple grand more than the Duc by itself with all the additional kit.
These are both a price premium for sure and loaded in kind.
Excellent review!
Being able to switch to off-road mode while moving is a big deal for me. I hated having to stop for that on bikes I had before my R1250GS.
I agree
Thanx about video! I love my tiger 2020 and little angry about new TFT screen:) I want upgrade😂
The new screen is really nice
good review; interesting comments. . which has service and parts i your area. Both are slow here.
i'd pick the lightest one. like the 850 sport but its not available here ! so ....
Fun Video Indeed 👌
Which one of these motorcycles feels lighter or simply easier to handle while riding across Challenging Off Road Terrain?!
These bikes are incredibly similar... It's really rider choice.
The Ducati is more tunable foe people like me that like more control over settings, although most of the time the power is maxed out and everything is off or minimized. The Triumph is a better "do-everything" bike
The Ducati's ABS is too sensitive in down hill technical off-road (but can be turned off). The Triumph lacks refinement in the off-road traction control in loose uphill or mud (but it can be turned off).
Access to settings is much better on the Ducati
How do these bikes compare with the Husky Norden?
Better seats
Not to mention the ridiculous service costs and the 40 minuete air filter change. If the tiger 900 is as smooth and capable as my old tiger 800. It would be Triumph all the way for me.
Service cost is rediculous for any brand now 🫤 unless you do it yourself and then it's time.
GREAT STUFF
Awesome! 😂Miss you guys already. See ya next year!
What settings do you use for off road on the Ducati as I have the same bike
And Ducati is more expensive on parts than BMW?
@@BretTkacs Compare the numbers side by side and at least here the BMW is actually cheaper.
I find it gear shift to close to pegs and and when up hill, heel landing on muffler on the right and pressing on the kick stand on the left on the duc not a deal breaker but I wonder if that can be resolved some how ?
Have you put the gear shifter in the high position?
Oh man, you're breaking my heart over here with my just broken-in Norden
The 901 has better balance than both of them
Great video. 👍
Ok… before I watch, rooting for the DDX all the way!!!
Key difference for me is being able to maintain and service the bike at home. Ducati has made it so the owner is unable to do that, which is a hard stop for me even though I love the retro look of the DesertX over the 900RP.
How is servicing the Duc at home any different that the Tiger?
@@BretTkacs The service notifications and CEL notifications are locked down a lot harder than other bikes, on the DesertX forums we're guessing about 2yrs until it's unlocked in a third party OBD software tool. In order to turn them off you need dealer tools and every visit means paying a dealer to do it. Most dealers will only reset it when doing an oil change, and that's an almost $400 charge to get done.
@@donut3110Not true. OBDStar
@@pbunt1911 It's not unlocked. Still very much restricted to do anything.
The Ducati looks better. I’m over the beaks.
I'm with you
Adventure bikes have beaks, racing bikes doesn't have them.
I don’t mind the beaks but the triumph is just a bike to me in terms of looks. The Ducati is really a bike you look at and admire
Great video! So fun to watch it! What do you think about the 890R compared to these two?
Ugly AF
I hate bike 'reviews' They're mostly a summary of what the specsheet told us.. and in the end, it comes down to "both/all are good and it's a personal preference"
This one was fun to watch though.. 😂
That's was a comparison and we did leave a lot out but I hate 45 min reviews.
We did do individual reviews on the bikes... I normally try to skip the spec sheet and focus on what you can't read about.
Awesome video next time add a little bit of POV riding off-road would like to see you guys riding hard and maybe crashing a little 💪😁
That was the plan but weather and time limited us... Our primary job was teaching so all the video had to be snuck in. I am also solo and video and edit everything on this channel 😁👍
This was a lot of fun, loved the natural, competitive banter. And wrapping with the “one thing” added the cherry on top.
Neither one, both are too expensive and more powerful than I need. I'll take a free key for a Transalp XL750, a V-Strom 800DE, or a Tuareg 660 though!
I fully agree with the first sentence. The second is missing the T7.
