The North Portal Bridge is more than 50% complete. I also think that 2035 completion date isn't for the new tunnels, but for the entire project which includes a total renovation of the old North River tunnels.
That's right. Probably looking at 2031-2032 for the new tunnels alone.
10 years to build 2 fucking miles. It took Switzerland 17 years to build the Gotthard Base Tunnel and that's almost 36 miles. How in the world does it take LONGER to tunnel with tunnel boring machines when it only took 6 years to build the original tunnels with manpower?!?!?!

I think the timeline is for total completion of the entire project, including rehab of the old tunnels and related bridges and stuff in the area. The new tunnel should be done well before then, but then the old tunnels will close, keeping the max train capacity about the same until both are open in ~2035.
The question to ask is what is the length of the tunnel connection between New York and New Jersey?
