When your father tells you that they have never lied to you then it's safe to assume they lie to you the most out of anyone in your family. If I'm kind, considerate, compassionate, loyal, and truthful then I shouldn't have to tell people that
But he didn't claim that his father TOLD him that he has never told him a lie. It seems more like he just believes that. For example I truly believe my father has never lied to me and he has never once had to tell me he isn't lieing. I agree that if your father actually tells you he hasn't lied to you it is probably likely he has, but that isn't what I heard here. (Also I am paused at about 30 seconds into this video to comment so I'm not sure what is in store for the rest of the video. I'm just stating what I heard it seems that you are commenting on in the beginning) ✌
Huh - too much overthinking there for me I'm afraid. I've often told my kids we should tell each other the truth; I've also told them if they've a problem/worry etc to come to me and we'll do what we can to sort it - I wouldn't NOT say that just "because I shouldn't have to". There are of course instances where a parent has no choice but to lie to their child - I suppose then your way works out, as it's never been clarified.

We need different voids filled now. Hitchens destroyed the idea that religions are untouchable. Today, a book is due similar to his which may well be written by a new author titled "Government is not great - Authority destroys everything..." If global government responses to Covid and human trafficking are anything to go by, such a book is long overdue.
Hitchens contradicts his argument here. He says Pilate is depicted as a mere serf and it was Tiberius who got rid of Pilate. But in the film, Pilate mentions precisely that 'the next time the blood will be mine' - so Gibson did imply the hostility between Pilate and Tiberius the film merely depicts the pressure Pilate was under from fear of a Jewish Revolt
You didn't grasp what he actually said in the slightest. The argument he presented is that Pilate is presented as a serf to the Pharisees, bullied into the execution. Hitchens notes that in reality Pilate was removed from his position because of his vile treatment of said people. That reading is nonsense, and wouldn't constitute a contradiction on any level.

One of my favourite things about Hitchens is his very concise listing of things. He doesn't rant. He educates. He builds a case in parts and provides evidence with every breath. There is still nobody like him. And the wit is like a beautiful package of delivery. Jordan Peterson is a babbling child compared to this guy. After hours of watching Hitchens Peterson just comes across as boring and opinionated rather than clinical and passionate.
Peterson spews nonsense with enough passion and authority that the uninformed assume it must be true. One of the funniest I heard was that people can't quit smoking without a belief in god
Hitch who pretends to know the bible as he screws up on it over and over again including what faith means biblically. --"Faith is the surrender of the mind, it's the surrender of reason, it's the surrender of the only thing that makes us different from other animals. It's our need to believe and to surrender our skepticism and our reason, our yearning to discard that and put all our trust or faith in someone or something, that is the sinister thing to me. ... Out of all the virtues, all the supposed virtues, faith must be the most overrated”-- Christopher Hitchens Now, look at what biblical faith really means that Hitch the liar didn't even look at: Biblically, faith means trust. It's a trust by evidence seen. God asks that we prove things. To reason. To get knowledge. To study. God has nothing to hide. We develop trust from what is seen, and that which is not seen yet is trusted also because of the trust built up from what is seen. It's much like a human relationship. We don't trust much until a person has gained that trust from what is observed. The difference is though, God is not limited to human powers. He created us. Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. crossexamined.org/biblical-faith-vs-blind-faith/ www.truthortradition.com/articles/what-does-the-bible-say-about-faith www.revisedenglishversion.com/Appendix/16/Faith_is_Trust www.truthortradition.com/articles/faith-a-confident-expectation-of-gods-promises-coming-to-pass www.truthortradition.com/articles/hebrews-1-11-and-faith Hitchens always went into evasive word antics to avoid key questions like how we got the creation of the universe. Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God. Only shallow people follow Hitchens.

"For the normative self-understanding of modernity, Christianity has functioned as more than just a precursor or catalyst. Universalistic egalitarianism, from which sprang the ideals of freedom and a collective life in solidarity, the autonomous conduct of life and emancipation, the individual morality of conscience, human rights and democracy, is the direct legacy of the Judaic ethic of justice and the Christian ethic of love. This legacy, substantially unchanged, has been the object of a continual critical reappropriation and reinterpretation. Up to this very day there is no alternative to it. And in light of the current challenges of a post-national constellation, we must draw sustenance now, as in the past, from this substance. Everything else is idle postmodern talk." Watches a movie about Jesus, calls it fascist, of course. Everything he opposes must be fascist. What else do you expect? Also, is his objection to the movie it contradicts the Bible? A strange point from him.
It never made sense to me that Christians should be upset that anyone killed Jesus (according to the mythology) since without His death, there would be no salvation. The whole point of the mythological tale is that in order for humanity to be saved Jesus must die. They should thank anyone they believe were responsible not condemn them. But of course, I ask too much intelligence from the religious who don't even understand their own holy book.
I remember having to watch it in Sunday school. Since then, I have long since moved away from Christianity, but I will say this. This movie, and the mindset behind it, misses the point of Christ's teachings. Jesus taught kindness and empathy, but his name is often invoked to incite division, manipulate others, monger fear, or put on the image of virtue and righteousness. If the word of God was as sacred as people like Mel say it is, they'd stop preaching it and start following it. Instead, they use it to clean themselves of their own dirty deeds, like toilet paper used to wipe someone's ass. And yes, that is blasphemous, but I say it's well deserved. Now, I for one think that Christ's teachings are wishful thinking personally, so they're not for everyone. But if someone claims to follow those teachings, I say they better show it. Because I'd imagine he'd have a lot more favor for a virtuous non-believer than a devoted hypocrite.

He made several legitimate criticisms: 1.) The portrayal of Pontius Pilot as a sympathetic and subservient to the High Priests, which is extremely inconsistent with both the biblical account and all historical evidence of that era, it was the other way around. Criticism of the High Priests was pretty common among Jews in those times, especially among the Pharisees and Essences. The former was the precursor to Rabbinic Judaism, the latter very heavily influenced many Christian teachings. 2.) The use of antisemitic tropes and Aramaric phrases which no official church authority, Catholic or Orthodox, agrees with, and outright rejects as heretical. 3.) The use of scenes and characters for which there is no biblical or theological basis, just shit Mel Gibson added on his own accord. Throughout the Bible He pronounced judgments on cities and civilizations, and history has shown that they have come true just as promised hundreds or in some cases thousands of years earlier. The God of the Bible pronounced specific judgments on the cities Jerusalem, (Luke 21, 20-24) Nineveh, (Zephaniah 2:13-15) Samaria, (Micah 1:5-9) Tyre, Exekiel 36) Ashkelon, (Zephaniah 2:4-7) Capernaum, Chorazin, Bethsaida, (Matthew 11:20-24) and many others. In every case the pronounced judgment came true. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, but they came true. The God of the Bible pronounced specific long term, or permanent judgments on the Hebrew civilization, (Ezekiel 36-38) the Edomite (Ezekiel 25:13-14) civilization, the Philistine civilization, (Ezekiel 25;15-17) and many others because of their sins. Once again, history confirms that the pronounced judgments came true. There are many religions that tell me to fear their gods. But there is no God, except the God of the Bible Who has demonstrated that He actually judges sinners in real life. He is the only God to follow. And He is to be followed according to the book He has given us, the Holy Bible. Are You Good Enough to go to Heaven? (The 10 Commandment Test) The Bible is supernatural in origin, therefore take heed to its promise of Heaven and warning of Hell. The Ten Commandments says “Thou shalt not kill.” Have you ever murdered? If you have you are a murderer. It says “Thou shalt not bear false witness.” Have you ever lied? If you have you are a liar. (Think: If one little murder would make you a murderer, then one little lie makes you a liar.) It says “Thou shalt not steal.” Have you ever stolen? Ever? Anything? If you have you are a thief. It says “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.” Have you ever used the name God or Jesus as cuss words. If you have you are a blasphemer. Jesus said that if we even look at someone with lust, we are adulterers at heart. Have you ever looked with lust? We have only looked at five of the commandments, yet if God were to judge you by the 10 commandments would you be innocent or guilty? If you have said yes to any of these questions, you are guilty and cannot stand before a holy God. Do you really think a Holy God is going to let murderers, liars, thieves, blasphemers and adulterers into heaven? The Bible says. “. . . all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone.” (Revelation 21:8) You desperately need a Savior. The Bible says: But God commendeth His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ, God the Son, died on the cross and paid for all your sins. The Bible teaches that He literally took the entire punishment that was coming to us for our sins, so that we could be forgiven and freely allowed into Heaven. He rose from the dead, and now wants to forgive you and save you from the sins that condemn you. He will give you a salvation that will not only forgive you, but it will turn you away from those sins that are destroying you. If you will repent of your sins, (name them) and trust Him for forgiveness and salvation, He promises: “Believe (trust in, rely on, cling to) on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16:31
Fun fact: the guy playing Jesus in Passion was struck by lightning during filming of the Sermon on the Mount scene. Atheismo certainly has a great sense of humor.
He was also accidentally whipped as the actor carrying out the whipping was meant to whip a post behind the actor playing Jesus but his aim wasn't always as it should have been. He also suffered from migraines from the prostheses he wore. Plus a dislocated shoulder from carrying the cross.
It is never fun if one gets struck by a lightning. Further more, you are implying that him being struck by a lightning implies existence of some god, and if you not, you are a moron.
Caciezel has said he doesn't do scenes with gratuitous sex and "I also don't do gratuitous violence", so we know he must have a sense of humour, or at least sarcasm.

Your comment is something Hutton Gibson might have said,. Obviously anyone with sedevacantistic leanings would lap up this film.and would be a lost cause to Hitchen's petition. His argument is this film is pitched at ultraconservative, fundamentalist Christians. If you are an ultraconservative, fundamentalist Christian, he therefore is not talking to you.
I was not expecting somebody portraying himself as "rational and bright" to give such a hateful and extremely emotional rant. I'm an atheist myself and I watched Mel Gibson's film, however, the arguments Hitchens presented here were ridiculous and he did not base them on anything compelling, except for a few polemic facts that he interpreted his personal way. I was expecting the Passion to be an antisemitic film, but all I saw was the more or less biblically accurate portrayal of Jesus' last hours of life. And what's with that disgusting and clear implication that Mel Gibson denied the Holocaust, just because his father had done that and "Mel Gibson claimed his father had never told him a lie"? That does not mean that Mel agreed with his father on everything!! His father could have been wrong as far as Mel Gibson knew. Unless Hitchens had something Concrete and Verified to back up his claim on Mel Gibson's Holocaust stance, what Hitchens said here was therefore irrational, and pretty dirty too, to accuse Mel Gibson of something as extreme as denying the Holocaust, albeit with a sarcastic implication. I lost some of respect for Hitchens after watching this video.
Hitchens took considerable care to provide the full context around his condemnation of the film - including explaining which religious groups around the world would lap it up anyway because it feeds their prejudices. Hitchens contradicts his argument here. He says Pilate is depicted as a mere serf and it was Tiberius who got rid of Pilate.
But in the film, Pilate mentions precisely that 'the next time the blood will be mine' - so Gibson did imply the hostility between Pilate and Tiberius
the film merely depicts the pressure Pilate was under from fear of a Jewish Revolt
You didn't grasp what he actually said in the slightest. The argument he presented is that Pilate is presented as a serf to the Pharisees, bullied into the execution. --"Faith is the surrender of the mind, it's the surrender of reason, it's the surrender of the only thing that makes us different from other animals. It's our need to believe and to surrender our skepticism and our reason, our yearning to discard that and put all our trust or faith in someone or something, that is the sinister thing to me. ... Out of all the virtues, all the supposed virtues, faith must be the most overrated”-- Christopher Hitchens
Now, look at what biblical faith really means that Hitch the liar didn't even look at:
Biblically, faith means trust.

Hitchens always went into evasive word antics to avoid key questions like how we got the creation of the universe.
Hitch calling for a boycott? Hmmmmm.

@@michaelfern4079 Well, for an avowed "Antitheist" who only discovered late in life that his mother was Jewish, this assertion presents something of a conundrum. Watches a movie about Jesus, calls it fascist, of course.

Exactly. This bitter rambling hardly destroyed the film or its director…and certainly did nothing to discredit the subject matter of the film.
He accurately pointed out that the film was an antisemitic screed the likes of The Protocols of the Elders Of Zion and that Mel Gibson is a lowlife Jew hater with a holocaust denying father who spirited his sons from America to Australia in order to keep them from serving in Vietnam.
He made several legitimate criticisms:
1.) The portrayal of Pontius Pilot as a sympathetic and subservient to the High Priests, which is extremely inconsistent with both the biblical account and all historical evidence of that era, it was the other way around.

Is There A God Who Really Judges Sin?
While there are many who have called themselves God or gods over the millenia, have any of them shown an ability to actually judge sins?
The god of the Quran has never shown that ability.
The gods of the Hindu scriptures have never shown any ability to judge.
The god of the Book of Mormon has never shown that he actually judges anyone.
Literally, in the history of man, the only God Who has shown that He judges sinners in real life is the God of the Bible.
(The 10 Commandment Test)
The Bible is supernatural in origin, therefore take heed to its promise of Heaven and warning of Hell. If you have
said yes to any of these questions, you are guilty and cannot stand before a holy God.

Rest in hell
You are missed greatly, Christopher Hitchens. May 2022. ❤️
So is my grandma
I concur. He helped me realize I had been a lifelong atheist.
Missed by whom? Did not even know he had passed. One less conceited individual living in the world if reports of his death are real.
@@saintsone7877 Missed by people with actual brains. Funny how a random nobody says they never even heard, while millions of people have. Sad
@@alexb9969 Not sad Alex but your response is.
I rarely watch NEWS as much of it is fake.

The fact you cannot accept a simple fact shows how sad your comment is.
I guarantee you Alex that if you were able to poll every person on the planet Earth instantly you would be shocked to see his death would not be known by the majority of people on the Earth today.
Only you think he was so important all knew of his life/death. Sadly for you the rest of the world did not idolise this liar.

No, Hitchens destroyed Iraq and his lungs not Mel Gibson.
It is very admirable that he changed his views on "enhanced interrogation techniques" after undergoing it himself, but that's what pricked my Hitchemania bubble. If he changed his opnion so easily and quickly in the face of personal experience, what else has he been wrong about (while talking about it with utmost panache, certainty and confidence)?
@@Avengerie So easily? He was choked half to death after which he had the honestly to admit he had been wrong. The ability to admit one’s errors is a sign of strength not weakness as I’m sure you’ll agree.
@@PaulHussey01 It's been a long time since I've seen it, but remember it was pretty quick. Waterboarding is deceptively non-violent, but it tricks all your senses into thinking you are drowning without doing any damage to your body. The point is: it is good that he admitted he was wrong (though I'd love to see him try argue his way out of admitting it after having just dropped the safety item 10 seconds into the procedure), and he still has my respect for his intellectual honesty, but he lost credibility in my eyes on a lot of things he's been arguing for with the same certainty as he had wrt Iraq/waterboarding. Was he wrong about women and their sense of humor? Was he wrong about his obsession with the Clintons? Was he wrong about Mel? I guess it was my fault for idolizing him and not evaluating all his arguments on the strength of their premises, but it is very human (and dangerous) to be longing for a person whose thoughts you can accept uncritically because you trust his intellect so much.
edit: just rewatched the video - he lasted 16 seconds. Basically the moment the water seeped through the towel, he dropped the items. All that time spent intellectualizing and contorting yourself into compartmentalized mind frames that make you justify torture evaporated in 16 seconds. It's one of the first videos (I was 16) that I remember that put me on a path of cynicism and moral relativism I am on now, as sad as it sounds.
There is no pure reason, only motivated reasoning.
@@Avengerie Thanks for your thoughtful and honest reply. I like your line “because you trust his intellect so much”. Easy to fall for isn’t it? Someone so eloquent and smart and who seems to speak your thoughts . Easy to idolise and assume that you and they must be kindred spirits. And then they go and say something you just can’t get on board with. Aaarrrghh! I hear you….Your intellectual heroes will always disappoint you. Unless….and it took me until my 40’s to get this…they’re just really smart people who are also prone to allowing their emotion to cloud their judgement. Idiots are 90% emotions and 10% intellect. Geniuses are the opposite. Folk like us in the middle. Let’s not be disappointed by the foibles of the brilliant ones, let’s enjoy what they teach us and forgive them their humanity. I mean, who are we to criticize ;-)
@@PaulHussey01 I appreciate the reply. Maybe the reason I was so hard on him is because he was the first person who had that glass-shattering effect on me. It almost felt like a betrayal. As you said, 90% reason, 10% emotions. 90% right, 10% wrong, sometimes glaringly so. The upside to that is me being more critical of predominant narratives and vaccinated against ideologues and people who claim to possess the ultimate truth. I still value his wit and perspective on things, and the humility and stoicism he's shown in his final months is something to be admired.
Devil can use human to stand against Christ.
Starts evidence listing personal information about mel gibson 😕
Jim Caviezel was great in the film, it’s a shame that “Hollywood” black balled him.
If that is true, then that would be a shame. Actors often have to take the roles they can get. Also, they read lines. They are rarely intellectually involved in projects like this (they advertise the movies they do out of necessity).
I understand there was some good acting in the film. That is a separate issue from the problematic message of the film
No one blackballed him, he's devolved into a Q anon moron.
@@busylivingnotdying Might not be what you think. Look him up. He seems like a strange, unhinged sort of guy.
@@ddburrows988 I did look him up. It seems he is influenced by some bad company with some bad ideas (Q-anon etc).
Perhaps being included in a better environment instead of being shunned, might have a better effect on him ..? I don't know. These things are difficult to handle well .. I don't know.
Usually people who are shunned get involved in even worse company than before, so ..
It's a matter of finding out what works best.
Note:
He's a good actor, right? Perhaps that can be a redeeming quality .. Perhaps it can be used for something more wholesome than the tribalism of q-anon and the othering of out-groups. "Where there is talent, there is hope" ;)
He frames it like rejecting the second vatican council is a bad thing.
It was one of the most successful films of all time
@@matthewklahn7523 made a fortune
Hitchens took considerable care to provide the full context around his condemnation of the film - including explaining which religious groups around the world would lap it up anyway because it feeds their prejudices. In the light of this, quoting this success/gross takngs statistic, out of context, is both childish and insulting to the intelligence.
