I just successfully replaced the spark plugs on my 2006 Toyota High hybrid following this video. Took about 5 hours, and I can't say enough about how good the descriptions of each step was. I'm no professional mechanic, but was still able to get through the job without problems. THANKS!
exelent video thanks I can't say enough about how good the descriptions of each step was. thanks for mentioning the size of each tool and bolt thank you so much for this video !
The local Toyota dealer gave me a quote of over $900 to change the spark plugs. It took me 5 hours, but i'm slow and have primitive tools. Very helpful video.
One suggestion. Let people know that those back bolts are a bear unless they have tools like yours. I did it with a metric wrench and my hands show it. Very little clearance and putting everything back together is a very patient process. Other than that, outstanding. Total time was around 4-5 hours.
Thank you so much for this video! My highlander hybrid v6 has over 213k miles and cylinder #6 is misfiring. I was able to do total tune up thanks to you.
Thanks so much. Great step-by-step video. The little here and there "tips" are nice. Can't understand why "a plenum" has to come off in order to change the plugs. Price of progress I guess.
Hi, Great video! Question: At 9:40 you go behind the throttle body to remove a 12mm something. I've been following this video step by step, as this is the same make & Mmodel as mine. When I got to this point (removing the 12mm behind the throttle body), I got stuck. I couldn't reach it, or get a good drip on it. I ended up rounding off the head of the nut/bolt (Whatever is back there). Now I'm completely stuck. It's very hard to get to. What should I use to get this frozen stripped bolt out? I've sprayed it with WD40 and PB Blaster. It seems to be the only thing holding the maifold on, and I can't get this one out. Any advice? - I should mention, I bought this 2007 Highlander back in November '23 w/ 249K miles on it. It now has (as of May, 2024) 265K miles on it, and I don't think the rear plugs have EVER been changed! I got a P0303 code (Cylinder 3 misfiring) last night, and had the car towed home.
@ It was very difficult, so I ended up following that mount down to the bottom where it mounts to the transmission (or whatever it is mounted to) & pulled it out along with the mounting bracket. I also used a hacksaw blade to cut off the useless nubs around the intake manifold. That made it easier to reach behind it. Then I broke off 3 of the spark plugs inside the cylinder heads! Ask how I got THOSE out! lol!
Bought an extra long 12mm ratcheting flex head wrench, and it did the trick!!! I had nearly rounded the bolt off using a shorter wrench and trying to hit it with a hammer, but luckily there was enough left for this wrench to grip onto. $15 well spent. Be sure to replace your pcv valve. Mine was clogged up and throwing p0300-p0306 codes. You can still access it with the manifold on, but it's extra easy with it off.
and true on the other comments, you guys need to make sure you have a long 12mm or something to get those back bolts. So far the worst part of this job. I was able to break the right one free with a standard 12mm wrench, then sliding a pipe down on to the end, then hitting the pipe with a hammer...but praise God it eventually went free.
So what would cause a 2007 Highlander Hybrid to have the, "Check Hybrid System, Check VSC, and Check AWD" plus the triangle with the exclamation point in it to come on shortly after the READY light comes on, it goes forward and backwards on the HEV system but only tries and fails to turn the gas powered system on?
Specifically made for it. Prevents corrosion between contact points and “seals” to prevent moisture build up. Also aids in removal next time. They won’t stick and break off when pulled. My theory at least lol.
@@overthehedge0155 thanks for the reply. I was once told a long time ago that dielectric grease can prevent electrical contact, but then I'm not a master mechanic and you are haha.
Dude, I was gonna go look at a 2007 hybrid today would you recommend I like doing my own work on my car so that’s why I chose the Highlander but I’m not really sure with the hybrid technology not really familiar with it
I have same type. When I start the car and put it in drive it start making a cranking noise, did diagnosis says it's the cylinder 1,3&4. Have some codes. Nobody wants to work on it except one mechanic that came and towed it yesterday, and ran diagnosis on and got some codes. He said alot of codes. Hope he can do it. With the video I see today I have hope. What is the cost for that time up?
Focus on what he said at 21.56 , idle relearning. Make sure you do that everytime you disconnect the 12v battery, otherwise ICE will run more often than required and MPG will take a hit.
I have looked up idle relearning for this model, and there isn't really anything definitive. In fact, some claim it is a myth and that the car would relearn on its own under normal driving. What there is are varying instructions on disconnecting both battery cable for 5-30 minutes, then reconnecting them and letting the car idle by itself for a period of time.
I bought 2007 Toyota highlander hybrid, after 3days the car refused to start, displaying hybrid current contactor circuit high. Two different auto mechanic have tried to fix the car but to no avail. The car is still packed at mechanic work shop. The funny part is that I have spent a lot of money in changing the contactor still nothing worked. Please how can I get help here?
You can get factory service instructions from toyota (i think its called tech net?) It's like 15$ for a week of access to the full service manual. I did the thermostat and would highly recommend doing this as you have to remove the inverter to get to it. It's not too hard but pretty time consuming.
Hey man quick question, will the copper core spark plug keep the vehicle from starting? I just bought a vehicle just like this from a guy who took it to his mechanic and he got the car back not running, so I purchased it to fix and re-sell, so just wondering if that would cause any issue like that. Like the videos by the way👍🏻
Josh Robison glad you like the videos. Thanks! And no even with copper core plugs the vehicle would stil run. Maybe some randomn misfires, and if no misfires right away there would be in a shorty amount of time. The copper corr plug is actually a better electrical conductor just simply doesn’t last any where near as long. 20-30 k miles vs 100k. If it is just like this one I would hook up scanner and retrieve trouble codes. This vehicle has no starter. It uses hybrid generator to turn vehicle over. There are many things that could cause a no start with this. Trouble codes will def point you in some sort of direction.

Very helpful, thanks! (Still can't believe they built it this way!)

Should the plugs be removed with an impact drill ? Does it matter ? I have heard recommendations to only remove plugs by hand tools - thanks!

I don’t see the fuel rail or injectors anywhere. Can you help me locate them? Getting p0171 p0174 codes and vacuum and MAF sensor seem fine. 😕🤦♂️
At 24:26 you put the dielectric grease inside the coil pack hole? The dielectric grease wont effect reliability, connectivity, or spark of the plugs?
