Love the fact you had a hard time getting it out, but you showed the difficulty. Bravo! Subscribed!
+70Marc Thanks for watching and subscribing!
After reading a few nightmare stories online and watching this video, I've been convinced to just replace the entire LCA with a Beck/Arnley assembly on my 2008 Sequoia. Thx for the awesome video.
This method would have been much more effective with the car on the ground with a jack stand under the lower control arm. You need a solid base. The control arm moved every time he hit the ball joint (absorbing the force of the blow). And though they make a lot of great videos A1 parts are not the best quality. That A1 ball joint will not last 1/2 as long as a factory Toyota part.
Just a couple loving bonks.
Dude getting this ball joint out was insane. Not just in your video mine was just as hard. I had to loosen my whole LCA use a press and hammer. It took over two hours of just not giving up. Hahaha now to do the assembly of the ball joint UAC and new shocks and springs. Im a jeweler not a mechanic but this has been inspiring. Your videos have the small details needed for a novice to attempt such a task! Thanks!

@@1AAutowhy didn't you use the ball joint press to get the ball joint out . Was there a reason thanks
Well done Len. Considering the price of new LCA’s from 1A Auto, why go through all the trouble of replacing the ball joint and not replace with fresh LCAs?
Okay at 8:42 you've convinced me to buy the complete LCA :D
This makes me feel so much better about my truggling.
I just grabbed a ball joint kit on sale for when I have to do this project in the future. That better have the size I need for my FJ.
I appreciate all of the 1A Auto videos and I will definitely be ordering parts for our cars.
I did yesterday on 2006 4runner, old one was seized on arm control, great video
Actetylene torch!? I was looking for something a non-pro could use. Glad it worked for him.
Great video. It's nice knowing I'm not the only one who's gone half "loving bonk"erz crazy getting out a ball joint. ;-)
I just pressed a lower ball joint that I purchased from 1A Auto. I have pressed it in straight and as far as it will go but the snap ring doesn't fit under the lip.. What do you think the problem is? 2010 fj cruise
Question. What are you wacking against? Whats holding the lower arm up, the shock?? 🙈
+Rodolfo Lucca Blohm Thanks for checking us out! Yes, the lower control arm is attached and being held up by the strut.
@@1AAuto so the strut was destroyed while removing the joint. 🙈
@@alporroing Is this true? What do you suggest I do
@@claytonwilson4301 Further up - a great comment: lower control arm shouldn't be flapping/hanging like here - but supported underneath with a jack, holding the weight of the car.
Toyota lower control arms ball joint appears to be an off size making a ball joint press useless for removing. Some have used a socket from a socket wrench set to fit around the top of the ball joint which is needed to remove. I would rather buy a new control arm as this method seems to stress the arm
Heat expands metal. I'm very impressed
Great video and information…..you guys rock!! I will definitely will order my parts from you.
Is a front end alignment needed after doing upper and lower ball joints? 🧐
+Nicknackzz 13 Analignement would be required after changing the ball joints.

Why didn't you use the ball joint press instead of the hammer?
To take the ball joint off, I think you can do the same procedure in installing the new one.
+123m aa Thanks for checking us out! We did not have the appropriate cup for the press to get it out, plus this is an alternative way if you do not have the press to begin with. 1aauto.com

OK. I see.
Thanks for replying
I have a question regarding the upper control arm ball joint.
How can you tell weather it goes up or down while taking it off?
I know that you have made a video about the UCA, but it was replacing not servicing.
Thanks anyway.
Aluminum foil works great to keep the torch from melting your cv axle boot... just wrap some around the boot or lay a sheet of foil over the boot when heating up the joint. Also, if you dont have an acetylyn torch, will a regular propane torch work to heat that up??
MAPP gas works better than propane.
Anyone know, if as your pressing the ball joint in, if its crooked by 1/16” or so, will it straighten itself out when it meets the LCA?
Lololol
Do you have bolt joints for 2001 Saturn SL2, can't find it anywhere. Or the only option on that car to replace the Lower Control Arm? Thank you.
+Olena Erhardt We do not offer the bolts.
Why not a bushings remover kit
I have a 2007 fj. Front end feels so lose. Like driving with really low pressure in the tires. Wheel is constantly pulling with imperfections in the road. What can I do to fix that
+Badoo We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Anyone make a note of the inside diameter cup needed for this chassis to make a ball joint press work? I plan to use an impact socket on the catch side. I have a few really large axle nut sockets but I'd love an excuse to buy another!
That red hammer, what do you called this? Which store that have?
Snap on hammer
Would this be the same for a 2005 Tacoma V6?
+Ray Supra We don't have a how-to video for your vehicle right now, but the basic steps in this video should be enough to do this task.
Always great videos! I have a question too My FJ buzzes whenever i hit 40mph then stops at 50mph. Do you think it has something to do with the ball joints? It also womps around 20mph like its rubbing against something every couple tire spins. Any advice would be much appreciated 🙏
That sounds like your wheel bearings are bad. To confirm this drive your vehicle until your hear the buzzing noise then SAFELY ziz zag your vehicle left to right at a safe speed. If the buzzing goes away on one side then comes back on the other then your wheel bearings are shot.
Great job that was really stuck 😅😅
These lower ball joints are REALLY difficult to remove. I had to use a lot of heat and a ball joint press with a 3 foot cheater bar to get it out. Bonks didn't do anything.
+Magnum Muscle Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Is this applicable to GX470?
+Shalmaneser The part in this video fits your application for model years 2003-2009, and the install should be the same or similar. Buy this part on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Nice! This is perfect 👌🏼 Just what I needed 👍
Notorious difficult to remove, why not press.
Laziness of not removing the whole assembly, and not even professionals have a hydraulic press on spot.
I needed an 8 foot (yes, FOOT) cheater bar on my 18 inch breaker bar to press out the lower ball joint on my 2010 FJ. Next time I just replaced the entire assembly and now I have the old ones off the car to put in a hydraulic press next time i need lower ball joints.
great video, I'm inspired to this job.

That went well! 😂
this balljoints are known to be a no no to anyone without the right tools I respect this guy damn
+Luis edc Thanks for the feedback!
If you're watching this, and are planning on actually doing all of this work, do yourself a favor, don't buy the bs junk part shown in this video... Goto napaonline and look up your year FJ cruiser or whatever Toyota you have, search for ball joints, chose the 555 brand. These are Sankei 555 Ball joints made in JAPAN, and they are just as good as oem, but at a fraction of the price. Don't waste your hard earned money on junk like Moog or other China junk part peddlers!
I found out, the hard way, this does not work for the 2014 FJ cruiser. All the ball joints that I tried to buy were too short from 1/8” - 1/4”. You have to buy the whole lower control arm or buy the boot repair kit. If someone else knows of a ball joint that will fit the later models, that would be helpful. Every part store that visited had the wrong ball joint spec’d for the later years.
+Dan Duran Thanks for the tip!
This was absolutely insane. There has got to be a better way to do this then to beat the shit out of the LCA. I am doing this job right now on my GX470 using a ball joint press but the ball joint will not budge. I used a long breaker bar with a two feet extension pipe on it and still I cannot turn it enough for it to even move. This ball joint/control arm combo is a horrible design. A bolt on design would make a lot more sense. I was fuming mad today. Will continue tomorrow and see what happens. I have kdss and could not find a control arm anywhere.
Any updates on how you got it off?
bro this sounds horrible and now you have me scared about changing it tonight
Did you try using heat and lubrication? Were you able to get it off at all?
I would never use that method to remove a ball joint. The pullers don't work too well either on one that have been in place for years, so I would just buy a new LCA that has a new ball joint and be done with it for another decade or so.
Step1: torch & hammer like there’s no tomorrow
Step2: replace knuckle
I can not for the life of me get that god damned snap ring off the top. I hit it and it spins. Anyone know a tool for this??
Try clamping it down on one side and then pushing it out from the other
Should have used the air chisel right away
Well this has inspired me to not do this job
lots of rust
Jesus.
Glad I found the wrong way to do it.
A C-clamp woulda made the job easier. Poor FJ.. z
Oh my God, the rust!
