I had upper and lower permanent retainers from my orthodontist. Years later the the upper broke on one end, they( another dentist) removed the retainer and started me on invisalign and now i wear the night invisalign. I wondered why they just didn't put the permanent retainer back once my tooth moved back?
My ortho was old school and anti permanent retainers. My wire retainer broke twice and to get it fixed was $100 🥹 after the second break I got the Invisalign retainer which was $250 for the top. Luckily I haven’t any issues with it. I don’t play about my teeth either.
I have a permanent retainer on the top. I had them put it there because the gap between my top two teeth was starting to come back. That was the main reason I got braces. If yours is coming off, then they didn't put it on properly to begin with. I've had mine for seven years with no issues, and I know of people that have had them for 20 years.
