Because it got the pep treatment - off key, different tempo. There was nothing wrong with the original version aside from the Engrish. If she fixed just that (which she did in this version) but kept the original tempo and key, it'd be perfect.

This cover needed to exist. I think this is the best live version I've heard, Crystal Kay's sounds the best in recording on the orchestral bluray, but hers and Faye Wong's suffered terribly from the strains of live performace. (Faye's is just so delicate and lovely on the game's OST though.)

lets sum up everyones comments. there both incredible talented singers who sing VERY awesome. faye's version sounds like it fits into ff8 better, and angela's fits into a performance really well. they both have great soul and power. am i right?

Well that is because Eyes on Me is about regret. It is sort of a somber pain then a throbbing pain. Faye gives the impression she is singing it after the fact. While Angela Aki gives the impression that she is singing it with the guy in the bar. That is the difference in their performances.
For all the people who were saying this version is bad. This is why I think it is better. First of all Faye Wong is just a singer, while Nobou entrusted her to sing for the music he composed, she did an okay job. While you have Angela Aki, who not only re-edited the score, but she sang it while playing the paino, live, do you know how hard it is to play the paino and sing? not to mention live? okay sure its not purely sad, with one tone, but the different tones on her score makes it brilliant
Although I love Faye version because it was slow, elegantly sang, I think this version is very good. A cover is when an artist put their own creative ways on it instead of just copying the original. That and the fact that she's at a concert where people wanted to listen to her own songs made the faster version less awkward IMO. Also there's no denying that Aki has an amazing voice and this was live.
this version is good, but as someone who played ff8 i am more attached to faye wong's version. it has sentimental values to me and it brings back memories :)

Angela doesn't bring out the longingness of a lover... but rather someone who is at anger instead... I still like Fayn's style. The longingness.... of this song is what makes it unique and appealing to me.

Angela Aki is amazing and I love her singing, and her rendition of this song is great too because its sung in a different perspective. However, I think Angela lacks the magic that Faye brought into the song.
