Pancha it's good, but IMO, compared to the original version, you simply don't get the feeling. For example, just imagine Julia plays this version in her bar while looking at Laguna. Or maybe between Squall and Rinoa.
Because it got the pep treatment - off key, different tempo. There was nothing wrong with the original version aside from the Engrish. If she fixed just that (which she did in this version) but kept the original tempo and key, it'd be perfect.
I was blown away years ago when I first heard this version. Her English is so clean, and the fast pace makes sense with the slight "desperate" context of the story behind the song. I love it, FF8 I my favorite.
Uematsu didn't even know Faye Wong prior to listening to her CD in a Squaresoft staff meeting, but her voice and mood seemed to match his image of the song perfectly. He also thought her being Chinese fit the international image of Final Fantasy. Uematsu organized an orchestra and gave her a copy of the tape before the recording. Uematsu describes Wong's skill as a singer superior and her voice as "truly heavenly".-nobuo umetso the god of FF music.
i like this version, however i do prefer the more delicate and fragile tone version done by Faye Wong, for me her live was so awesome! However again i do enjoy this one makes it easier to sing compared to the original haha.
Well that is because Eyes on Me is about regret. It is sort of a somber pain then a throbbing pain. Faye gives the impression she is singing it after the fact. While Angela Aki gives the impression that she is singing it with the guy in the bar. That is the difference in their performances.
Whever sang my songs On the stage on my own Whenever said these words Wishing they would be heard I saw you smiling at me Was it real or just my fantasy You'd always be there in the corner Of this tiny little bar My last night here for you Same old songs, just once more My last night here with you Maybe yes, maybe no I kind of liked it your way How you shyly laid your eyes on me Did you ever know That I had mine on you Darling, so there you are With that look on your face As if your never hurt As if your never down Shall I be the one for you Who pinches you softly, but sure If a frown is shown then I will know that you are no dreamer So let me come to you Close as I want to be Close enough for me To feel your heart beating fast And stay there as I whispered How I love your peaceful eyes on me Did you ever know That I had mine on you Darling, so share with me Your love if you have enough Your tears if your holding back Or pain if that's what it is How can I let you know I'm more than the dress and the voice Just reach for me then You will know that you are not dreaming Darling, so there you are With that look on your face As if your never hurt As if your never down Shall I be the one for you Who pinches you softly, but sure If a frown is shown then I will know that you are no dreamer
lets sum up everyones comments. there both incredible talented singers who sing VERY awesome. faye's version sounds like it fits into ff8 better, and angela's fits into a performance really well. they both have great soul and power. am i right?
Although I love Faye version because it was slow, elegantly sang, I think this version is very good. A cover is when an artist put their own creative ways on it instead of just copying the original. That and the fact that she's at a concert where people wanted to listen to her own songs made the faster version less awkward IMO. Also there's no denying that Aki has an amazing voice and this was live.
this version is good, but as someone who played ff8 i am more attached to faye wong's version. it has sentimental values to me and it brings back memories :)
This cover needed to exist. I think this is the best live version I've heard, Crystal Kay's sounds the best in recording on the orchestral bluray, but hers and Faye Wong's suffered terribly from the strains of live performace. (Faye's is just so delicate and lovely on the game's OST though.)
+NazoM You're entitled to your opinion, not trying to say what you should like best. For me though this was the best live performance I have heard of this particular tune.
Shiro, I've been playing classical music for 33 years, since I was 5 years old. I have perfect pitch and have composed since I was a child. No, fix yours.
When I imagine Julia in the bar, I imagine this is more how it sounds... and that Faye Wong's version is more the studio recording, if that makes sense. Anyway, love both, but I probably prefer this version.
In Final Fantasy VIII, the other hand, the song has a meaning in the plot, and it closely relates to the game's main characters. Uematsu wrote a ballad he thought would suit the theme and asked everyone to bring in CDs with vocalists who would match it. The team listened to countless CDs in staff meetings, but none seemed to match their expectations, until they listened to Faye Wong.
I guess you could argue that from a technical standpoint Angela Aki does it better, but I think the way Faye sings is what makes Faye's singing her own, because she's known for that soft and delicate way of singing. Its her style. Its like how Angela Aki's known for her powerful and passionate singing style. But yeah, I'm gonna stop and just say that they're both amazing.
I always thought Faye's version had a more magical touch to it, with her soft and almost delicate voice. Kind of has a dream-like feel to it(no pun intended). Angela Aki is amazing and I love her singing, and her rendition of this song is great too because its sung in a different perspective. However, I think Angela lacks the magic that Faye brought into the song.
Nice. Different feel with Faye's version. Faye's version = pretty voice and soothing like a breeze. Angela's version = strong voice and more emotional.
I love this.. because she is in a such sophisticated place right now.. at an important event and she dresses like w/e... like a regular person.. I think she has done this more than once !
For all the people who were saying this version is bad. This is why I think it is better. First of all Faye Wong is just a singer, while Nobou entrusted her to sing for the music he composed, she did an okay job. While you have Angela Aki, who not only re-edited the score, but she sang it while playing the paino, live, do you know how hard it is to play the paino and sing? not to mention live? okay sure its not purely sad, with one tone, but the different tones on her score makes it brilliant
there's just going to be those people that don't like a different version from the original no matter how masterful the cover is..and don't make any mistake, THIS was masterful!
Honestly this is the best. As much as i love Faye Wong, this has none of the weird translation, more emotion - it makes far more sense as a song played in a bar by a pianist like Julia.
Aww~ I wished she held that, "Darling so there you areee." at 3:32 A bit long, about as long as the "Who pinches you softly, but sure." at 3:51 This cover is amazing, love you Ange~
Personally, I like this version more as well, but both renditions of the song are amazing. I like this one, because Angela Aki uses fuller dynamics and is more upbeat. I like Faye Wong's version because the hesitations are perfect, and she portrays it how Julia would have. Julia was shy about singing and her feelings for Laguna. :3
I love the original song by faye. I know that people put FF8 and this together as it should be, and have very good memories playing the game. but don't hate Angela for covering this song, she did and excellent job at it.
lol... imagine that this was the version being played in the ragnarok scene -_- it'll be so weird... but I have to agree, her voice is pretty... I still go with Faye Wong's version
Neither one could perform as well as Wong since Eyes On Me was specifically written for Faye Wong's way of singing, and Angela's distinguishing in rhythm on purpose even made the song sound more weird. Angela already has Kiss Me Good Bye, doesn't have to follow behind other's signature song to prove anything.
As mostly everyone says. Angela is very good. I give her complete props for being able to sing and play the piano. Although I do agree with the masses, Faye Wong definately has this song in the bag. Also, combining the two would be rather interesting. I'm sure it would come out very well.
I think this is the version Julia sang the first time (she wanted to bith play the piano and sing).... and Faye Wong's one would be the studio version they made when Julia was famous
Angela doesn't bring out the longingness of a lover... but rather someone who is at anger instead... I still like Fayn's style. The longingness.... of this song is what makes it unique and appealing to me.
At first I was skeptical but... c'mon, this is GREAT! I honestely prefer Angela's version to Faye's, despite the latter has the "first time impression thing" deeply carved into my mind :)
Okay, both Faye Wong and Angela Aki sing this song amazingly. You can not like this version if you want, but I give her credit for singing this song so well. I like how she sings it, maybe better than Faye does, but either way, they're both amazing. I'm partial to Angela, because I love her music, and I loved this song from the moment I heard it in FF8.
That's what I thought too when I heard this version. Angela is good, but like you said, this song is more fitting for someone who is more gentle in both tone and voice.
i love her arrangement of it. A lot of people just say Faye's ver is better cuz they've grown accustom to it, im not gonna play favorites i think they both differ from each other and are equally good
I have to admit, i prefer this version. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Faye Wong's version because it's not only good, it never fails to remind me of a few parts of the game; the bar, Ragnarok and the credits. While this does remind me of the game, it hasn't got that sentimental value or emotional context Faye Wong's version has got. However, i do think that she puts more feeling into the song with her voice and certainly makes it her own. I love the piano as well. Both are great.
Well, ouf course it is not faye wong's eyes on me!! it is ANGELA AKI'S EYES ON ME. If you are looking for faye wong in this video, then i am telling you that you are watching a wrong video. This video is Angela Aki and her rendition of Eyes On Me.
I don't get why everyone says this version is bad, it's very nice
Pancha it's good, but IMO, compared to the original version, you simply don't get the feeling.
For example, just imagine Julia plays this version in her bar while looking at Laguna. Or maybe between Squall and Rinoa.
I actually don't like the other versions at all. This one for me is the best around. No doubt
Because it got the pep treatment - off key, different tempo. There was nothing wrong with the original version aside from the Engrish. If she fixed just that (which she did in this version) but kept the original tempo and key, it'd be perfect.
@@ksborg agreed, the other one is not powerful enough, a little too nasaly and pitchy for my taste
I see this as a different interpretation and Angela did amazing job
I love that she corrected the grammar from the original lyrics.
I was blown away years ago when I first heard this version. Her English is so clean, and the fast pace makes sense with the slight "desperate" context of the story behind the song. I love it, FF8 I my favorite.

11 years later I'm still loving that cover.
Everytime you put your eyes on me,
I turn away,
because Ahriman attacks hurt.
Love, FFXI.
Ahriman? The big bad God of darkness? Kills people? Destroys cities? Scares naughty children?
This is nice! It is pretty tough to find any original versions of this song, and this was done very well.
i like this version, however i do prefer the more delicate and fragile tone version done by Faye Wong, for me her live was so awesome! However again i do enjoy this one makes it easier to sing compared to the original haha.

I think her rendition of the song is nice when set in her piano and vocals. Sure, its a bit fast for the temple but its okay, thats her style. Nice!

Whever sang my songs
On the stage on my own
Whenever said these words
Wishing they would be heard
I saw you smiling at me
Was it real or just my fantasy
You'd always be there in the corner
Of this tiny little bar
My last night here for you
Same old songs, just once more
My last night here with you
Maybe yes, maybe no
I kind of liked it your way
How you shyly laid your eyes on me
Did you ever know
That I had mine on you
Darling, so there you are
With that look on your face
As if your never hurt
As if your never down
Shall I be the one for you
Who pinches you softly, but sure
If a frown is shown then
I will know that you are no dreamer
So let me come to you
Close as I want to be
Close enough for me
To feel your heart beating fast
And stay there as I whispered
How I love your peaceful eyes on me
Did you ever know
That I had mine on you
Darling, so share with me
Your love if you have enough
Your tears if your holding back
Or pain if that's what it is
How can I let you know
I'm more than the dress and the voice
Just reach for me then
You will know that you are not dreaming
Darling, so there you are
With that look on your face
As if your never hurt
As if your never down
Shall I be the one for you
Who pinches you softly, but sure
If a frown is shown then
I will know that you are no dreamer
lets sum up everyones comments. there both incredible talented singers who sing VERY awesome. faye's version sounds like it fits into ff8 better, and angela's fits into a performance really well. they both have great soul and power. am i right?
Although I love Faye version because it was slow, elegantly sang, I think this version is very good. A cover is when an artist put their own creative ways on it instead of just copying the original. That and the fact that she's at a concert where people wanted to listen to her own songs made the faster version less awkward IMO. Played this in 0.75x speed and it's suddenly sad.
It's already a sad song :p
this version is good, but as someone who played ff8 i am more attached to faye wong's version. it has sentimental values to me and it brings back memories :)
Angela sings this wonderful live.
and she can play the piano at the same time.
shes doing this all by herself.
This cover needed to exist. I think this is the best live version I've heard, Crystal Kay's sounds the best in recording on the orchestral bluray, but hers and Faye Wong's suffered terribly from the strains of live performace. (Faye's is just so delicate and lovely on the game's OST though.)
+Matt Van Vrancken Faye performed, is the best...
+NazoM You're entitled to your opinion, not trying to say what you should like best. For me though this was the best live performance I have heard of this particular tune.
Titus Gray fix your ears
Shiro, I've been playing classical music for 33 years, since I was 5 years old. I have perfect pitch and have composed since I was a child. No, fix yours.

Wow...amazing video and lovely song sweetie..great job, thanks for sharing this master piece....love it so much, take care and God bless.! tqm :)
Damn her voice is perfect...
I love how shes a formal event and shes chillin out with a hoodie and jeans
When you have skills or is capable, then no one will give a cent gow you look. 😊

Por siempre
I always thought Faye's version had a more magical touch to it, with her soft and almost delicate voice. Kind of has a dream-like feel to it(no pun intended). I simply love this version ♥
Till comeback here every year.
❤❤❤
Nice. Different feel with Faye's version. Faye's version = pretty voice and soothing like a breeze.
Angela's version = strong voice and more emotional.
This version gives me the Thrills. She's just amazing. I like her intonation way better!
I love this.. because she is in a such sophisticated place right now.. at an important event and she dresses like w/e... like a regular person.. I think she has done this more than once !
It's a beautiful version of a beautiful song.
Loved this! Angela's Voice is great and cool!

I agree. The gentleness in Faye's version is what makes me love the song so much. It comes across as more earnest. : )
there's just going to be those people that don't like a different version from the original no matter how masterful the cover is..and don't make any mistake, THIS was masterful!
To me this is like the way Julia performed it at the bar every so often. And then the Faye wong version fits the ending off ff8.
Honestly this is the best. As much as i love Faye Wong, this has none of the weird translation, more emotion - it makes far more sense as a song played in a bar by a pianist like Julia.
This version is MUCH better than the normal one. Angela, thank you
I really think she is the best singer of this piece. Like, ever. So amazing!
Aww~
I wished she held that,
"Darling so there you areee." at 3:32
A bit long, about as long as the
"Who pinches you softly, but sure." at 3:51
This cover is amazing, love you Ange~
Angela aki is fantastic. Faye Wong did good, but I really appreciate this cover
It is a very favorite song. I was allowed to share. Thank you.
I love the original song by faye. I know that people put FF8 and this together as it should be, and have very good memories playing the game. but don't hate Angela for covering this song, she did and excellent job at it.
I remember the very day this video was uploaded -so long ago! Times go by as fast as F¨&*
I remember Eyes on Me was the first mp3 I had back in the day.
lol...
imagine that this was the version being played in the ragnarok scene -_-
it'll be so weird...
but I have to agree, her voice is pretty... I still go with Faye Wong's version
15 years late to hear this :(
This concert is called Voices - Music from Final Fantasy
Neither one could perform as well as Wong since Eyes On Me was specifically written for Faye Wong's way of singing, and Angela's distinguishing in rhythm on purpose even made the song sound more weird. Angela already has Kiss Me Good Bye, doesn't have to follow behind other's signature song to prove anything.

Also, combining the two would be rather interesting. I'm sure it would come out very well.
Kanon rules the rendition of EOM. That pure clear voice of her is untouchable.
She is really talented!!!
I think this is the version Julia sang the first time (she wanted to bith play the piano and sing).... and Faye Wong's one would be the studio version they made when Julia was famous
She is the best!

her voice is just SO amazing !!
Love this. Never heard Angela Aki, but I will after listening to this.

That's what I thought too when I heard this version. Angela is good, but like you said, this song is more fitting for someone who is more gentle in both tone and voice.
"I wish we could combine the two and make the ultimate version of this song... "
Man! That would be so awesome!
my god, i've been looking for something like this everywhere, i wanted to accompany my girlfriend at the talent show with something like this
i love her arrangement of it. A lot of people just say Faye's ver is better cuz they've grown accustom to it, im not gonna play favorites i think they both differ from each other and are equally good
Whoa! I hear her talk at the end and I'm amazed because I heared no trace of an accent while she was singing! :O
She's amazingg
Her version isn't bad, it's just the original is epic beyond human comprehension.
I have to admit, i prefer this version.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Faye Wong's version because it's not only good, it never fails to remind me of a few parts of the game; the bar, Ragnarok and the credits.

However, i do think that she puts more feeling into the song with her voice and certainly makes it her own. I love the piano as well.
Both are great.
Beautiful......when ones voice/talent can reach that place inside you ..........nice;0
Absolutely Josh! The arrangement and fill is definitely better than the original. Her English is perfect and she hits all the right pitches.
I love this version, I wonder if this is how Julia sounds like. I imagine her sounding like this.
they both have their good points. but i usually like the originals better. but aaki did a great job on this one :D
here i'm ... listening this song again...
I miss Angela Aki. This version is the best.
Well, ouf course it is not faye wong's eyes on me!! it is ANGELA AKI'S EYES ON ME. If you are looking for faye wong in this video, then i am telling you that you are watching a wrong video. This video is Angela Aki and her rendition of Eyes On Me.
I love Faye Wong's version but this is Great! The song was spiced up! Good Job!
Agreed... I saw Angela Aki at Play: A Video Game Symphony in Chicago and didn't care for her version. No one does it better than Faye Wong.
One of my personal favorite versions
Just awesome.
this is the version i've been looking..^^
I Love Angela Aki, and her version of eyes on me.
Hi, there! As far as I know, Angela is half Japanese and half American.
Her mum is American and her dad is Japanese.
its better than the original version *^*
