I have a totally different take (I totally made this up, but, it makes sense to me, especially the little bar).
It's a song sung from the perspective of Tifa for Cloud for the ending of FF7. The tears in the lyrics refer to Cloud grieving for Aerith. Cloud is obviously still getting over Aerith's death and that's why Tifa pinches Cloud. Unfortunately, not finished in time for the ending of FF7, so used for FF8 instead.

Man, it's like this song was meant for Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy VIII only. I'll be damned if this song is lost to time, because no matter what age, generation, or timeline you're from, this song and Final Fantasy VIII deserves to continue on for everyone to hear forever.

It also has minimal relevance to the game's story. It's a beautiful song but hearing Julia's ode to Laguna, when they never see each other again, doesn't add much, and I really don't understand why they play it for Squall and Rinoa when it doesn't reflect their romance at all (yes, I know their connection to the previous couple, still irrelevant).

LOL! Dude I was 13 for FF8 as well. I was in love with the idea of some pure teenage love. Where was my Rinoa? Where was the girl in the world who had played FF8 too and could feel how I was feeling? Let me see a shooting star and dance a waltz at homecoming, not some lame pop song. I thought 17 year olds was so big and mature back then. Ya know what though? I ended up in the military with 17 year old guys years later so I guess that's not too off the mark from the game. Crazy she's 52 now. That's us in 20 more years. That's us.

This game and this song left a deep mark on me, I remember as a kid looking at Squall and wanting to be as cool as him, and have a romance like theirs. I eventually grew to be a loner and I'm kinda cool (still not as much as Squall) but the romance never happened, now this song hurts a little bit, but in a beautiful way
Oh man I feel ya. But dw, romance is overrated. I thought the same as you and I eventually got it, I got married had a kid and then became a single dad. Finally got into another fairytail which also ended when she went back home during 2020 pandemic. I think I've always meant to be free, I like it this way.

I am 40 now, I'm still listening to this song, I never played FF games but I had my best buddies way back on my college days who introduce this song to me from then I fell inlove with this song so much.1 of my best buddy gave me a bday gift (personalized laminated message card using the collectable cards of FF) unfortunately that best buddy passed away in 2017. I always play this song and look back to the best memories I had with them.😢

I am from Hong Kong and I love Japanese songs espacially the 80s to 90s.
曲だけではダメ､ゲームの内容だけでもダメ。両方が名作であるから不朽のものになるんだろうな
王菲は中国ではMISIAに匹敵する「国宝級歌手」ですが、当時日本では無名だった彼女を起用して、英語の歌を歌わせたというのは凄すぎると思います。この歌をここまで素晴らしく歌えるのは、彼女以外では中国の周深ぐらいじゃないかと思います。彼のカバーも素晴らしかったです。

After a decade and a half, the memories still come flowing. This remains as one of the best songs that was ever created in the entire Final Fantasy series.

A decade and a half? Did you start your FF journey late? I luckily was there when FF first released, but sadly being in NA I only saw every 3rd game until FFVII came out. This game was released on 9-9-99 (so 23+ years ago), I remember cause it was the last game I ever bought on launch day. VII still remains my favorite, but VIII was awesome.

When this song played in FF 8 in outerspace with squall and rinoa i am sure it took everyone by surprise. I dont think anyone ever expected a vocal song of this caliber to be in the game. Amazing then 20 years ago and still Amazing now, and I am sure it will be amazing in 20 years from now as well.
I still remember making an extra save for this cut scene just to listen to this song , over and over. The story is so good , never expect anything from the game back then , and this song just blown me away.

It's actually Raine's song about Laguna. Kiros told Laguna that the singer Raine wrote this song for a soldier that went to war and never returned. That soldier was Laguna

I played FFVIII and finished all the way to ending; The ending is so touching and beautiful when this song hit. The characters animation is superb in that time.

I'm 53, I still remember playing this game in the PlayStation, reach the point in the game when this song was singed and beign absolutely amazed about it... never before I had heard a song while playing a game (original or not). Jay Cee she was legendary because she was the most famous and best Chinese female singer from Hong Kong liked by many in South East Asia at that time, that's how she got the opportunity in singing this song and was picked by the game producers.

Read the behind the scene on it's production, I'm surprised Uematsu never heard of Faye Wong initially, the lady's a literal diva in Hong Kong and the better part of mainland China, yet he made the right choice and it paid off in the end

I didn't play VIII for the longest time, thinking there was no way it could follow up VII. I finally played it, and I'm glad I did. Most underrated Final Fantasy ever. VII, VIII, and IX are the golden age of this series

I'm going through Final Fantasy 8 again because I couldn't enjoy it on its own terms. When it came out I was hugely obsessed with Final Fantasy 7 that I didn't give this one a fair chance.
