- diyforknucklehe... Sanding the Floorboards and Wall Tiling the Kitchen Splashback. G'day Knuckleheads and welcome to Episode 47 in my Diy For Knuckleheads Owner Builder Series. In this Episode we are at that point in the renovation where l'm sanding the floorboards and tiling the kitchen splash back.
Sanding the floor made a massive difference to the house as did the splash back. The older floor took a lot of work to get it up to scratch but the end result was well worth the effort. I decided to use professional floor sanders for this job as l wanted a really nice finish. It proved to be a good decision. I also went for a Satin finish which was appropriate for the older boards. It really made the character in the floorboards POP!.
The kitchen splash back was the same. I can't wait for you to see it in the Big Reveal Video Coming Soon!

Isn't it great how nice the old floorboards cleanup? Made the world of difference in my place when we got them done. Looking forward to the end product mate!
Mate...you can't beat them. People would ask us if we were going to pull them up and replace them (they were looking pretty rugged) but l kept on saying 'No way. These boards are going to make this place'.....and they did :-) Cheers mate
what timber was the old floor Shano? whole thing looks brilliant!
Not a 100% sure Albert but l just think its a mix old hardwoods. Thanks mate
I've been following this since the beginning! Can't wait for the reveal!
Big effort Phil! Thanks for sticking around mate. Cheers
It's been a long road, but now the finish line is in sight. Love it!
So close Mike...so close..just the deck to go. Cheers
Awesome work mate, great job in bringing in the professionals for the floor, worth every cent! Looking forward to seeing the final videos mate, you have done a really good job of documenting it all for us!!
Thanks James! It's been a fun process (not to mention, time consuming!). I hope all's well your end mate. We'll have to catch up for a chat. Cheers mate
Good on you for being so close. Great to have been on this journey with you. Looking forward to the wrap.
Cant wait to see the walk around Unc. Brilliant.
Won't be long Shane. Just got the deck to go. Stick around mate...it should be good :-)
Hey Shane, wow, near the end. Exciting! I think the choice of the dark grout was perfect. And the solvent finish on the floors is also the right call, more durable and " POP " goes the grain. Looking forward to the reveal.
Thanks Bill. Yeah l'm not a fan of the water based product...Solvent based all the way! Cheers mate
Those old floorboards look superb, what a brilliant job those guys did. I used dark grey grout on my own splashback but I wish I'd used those hexagonal tiles. A terrific idea to use the grinder to cut tiles, I never thought of that. Great stuff mate! Can't wait to see the finish.
Thanks Bruce! Mate....the old boards came up an absolute treat. I'm so glad l kept them. Cheers mate
Great work knackers, keep them coming
Thanks for watching Neil :-)
SOOO close now =) I might me almost as excited as you are =) The floors look stunning, and the backsplash is awesome =) Can't wait for the reveal =)
Thanks Veronica. It is exciting. It's been a long haul. Cheers
I really enjoyed that one Uncle Knackers, but you left us hanging a bit mate, can't wait till you can get back in so we can see, the floors were coming up a treat and the contrast of dark grout with light coloured tile was a good one. Thanks for another ripper Shane, stay well and i'll cop ya ron mate.
Can't let all the goodies out at once James :-) Yeah the contrast really worked. The tiler was just a bit concerned regarding the consistency of the dark grout.....no need to worry...it turned out great! :-)
Looking good!!!
Thanks Arif :-)
Shane It looks great , allover bar the garden , top job from an old trad man ..
Pretty much mate. The garden may have to wait a bit....not a lot of coin left :-) Cheers
Looks like you are on the home stretch now... Fantastic job of the floors... I love the tiling....I think I would have gone for the white grout on the tiling.particularly as they are small... I have had both and the white always looks brighter and cleaner. .. Can't wait for the reveal...
Thanks mate. It's a matter of personal choice l suppose and l can see the pros and cons of both. Stick around mate...it's not far off :-)
floor looking great, and i think de dark grout makes the shape of the tiles pop! :)
Thanks Martijn. We've had a heap of great comments from friends regarding the grout colour. I'm glad we chose it. Cheers mate
Great series mate!
Thanks JP! :-)
Those floors look really brillo Shane (anyone for a game of sock skiing) as for the splash backs, they look good prob better when the dark dries up a bit. I have been with this Home Renovation from Episode 1 so i'm looking forward to the big reveal and tour. Cheers, Barry (Bazza from England)
Bazza, my young bloke is forever skidding around the place :-) He loves it! Trust me...the dark grout looks amazing. The end reveals coming up in a few vids. I have the deck and the driveway to go. Have a good one mate :-)
Back in my day, we wore Hessian undies AND WE LOVED IT! :P
LOL
shaneconlan1 If your downstairs department wasn't red raw and bleeding by the end of the day, you weren't working hard enough! :P
... okay, I'm done :D Thanks Uncle Knackers ;)
I'm hearing ya :-)
good choice on grout. white would have not worked imho. it's also a right pain to work with, slightest bit of dirt shows up in it!
Yeah the dark was by far the better of the two. Thanks for watching mate :-)
Well of course I am going to stick around for the big reveal, you don't think any of us are going to jump ship after coming this far.
You've been patient John :-) It'll be worth it..promise
Nice watch! Expensive?
you are awsome!!
Glad you liked the Episode Or :-)
Shane, how do you stop the glaze on the porcelain wall tiles from chipping?
G'day Roscoe. Slow and easy does the job mate along with a thin new blade on the grinder. I also found that l had to attack the last hexagonal on the sheet from both ends otherwise it tended to break an edge off. Trial and error was a big part in this job. Cheers mate
Very nice, Shane. What blade did you use to cut the tile with?
Steve, l used a thin diamond tipped masonry blade. Thanks for watching mate :-)
About how many years does wood flooring look good for
Depends on how well you look after it. If it does get a bit tacky you can repolish it. I love the look of timber floors and don't mind it when they get a bit worn....it gives the house a warm lived in look :-)
Hey Mate,
How much thickness was taken off the new floor with the sanding? 2mm? 5mm?
Thanks
two to three mm max, Matt. 👍
Can't wait for reveal but erm I seem to recall something about the cutting of hair. Seems that hair is shorter.......I could be wrong though.
Couldn't hack it any longer Bec...it had to get trimmed :-)
Do we always have to see that guys crack? why dont he buy a belt?... great progress, I almost finish the series.
Yeah l think poor old Justin needs a belt :-) Stick it out mate.. it's worth it. Cheers
it's called a backsplash not a splashback
The names interchangeable MOJO. I think it depends which school you went to :-)
+shaneconlan1 or maybe the country lol. good work tho man. I've been doing tile for years
