- In which John Green teaches you about the American Revolution. And the Revolutionary War. I know we've labored the point here, but they weren't the same thing. In any case, John will teach you about the major battles of the war, and discuss the strategies on both sides. Everyone is familiar with how this war played out for the Founding Fathers; they got to become the Founding Fathers. But what did the revolution mean to the common people in the United States? For white, property-owning males, it was pretty sweet. They gained rights that were a definite step up from being British Colonial citizens. For everyone else, the short-term gains were not clear. Women's rights were unaffected, and slaves remained in slavery. As for poor white folks, they remained poor and disenfranchised. The reality is it took a long time for this whole democracy thing to get underway, and the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness weren't immediately available to all these newly minted Americans.

The americans were British, they just had different ideologies.
2:41 In all honesty, Cornwallis' decision to establish a fortified base at Yorktown wasn't stupid at the time he made it. Entrenching yourself on a peninsula is a problem if you don't control the sea, but it's great if you do...and the British had throughout the entire war up to that time, and had little reason to fear they would lose that control. Plus, the primary source of supply for the British was seaborne (as noted, their forays inland into the countryside tended to not go well), so it made perfect sense for them to establish a fortified base at a port. The British had a longstanding tradition of sea supremacy, and tended to base their campaign plans around that. The British maintained sea supremacy throughout almost the entire war...except for that one brief period where they didn't, which turned out to be the important part. Yorktown only became a debacle for the British because of their naval defeat at The Chesapeake, which happened after Cornwallis' decision to retreat there, and was due to the failure of the naval commanders, not Cornwallis himself.

If it weren't for the French, we'd be speaking English today.
One reason I love Crash Course is because they always try to be non-biased. I hate how in some textbook stories and stuff people intentionally try to lighten up one side and antagonize others, or simply omit or exaggerate some information in order to make the story more dramatic and patriotic.
My favorite line from this video: "Well, Americans like to think that we all pitched in together and got rid of British tyranny, and lived happily ever after. Also that the Continental Army was the bravest, most loyal, and most effective fighting force in human history thanks to the leadership of George Washington. But actually- Well, yeah, let's go to the Thought Bubble."
Sorry if I offended you. It's just that I'm really offended by bias.

Maybe its just me, but the American Revolution is a surprisingly overlooked war here in the UK. Don't get me wrong, we are aware of it! But largely through it's importance to Americans and its consequences to US history. Brits don't seem to think of it as one of our most significant wars (which it clearly was) but focus more on its role as giving birth to America. Americans celebrate and commemorate their victory over the British, whereas the British almost forget they fought this war. Maybe its the old cliche that history is written by the winners.
+EASYTIGER10 I think it's more that it just didn't affect you guys as much, or even at all, really. I mean the States was supposed to get Baja California, and would've gotten Canada back in the War of 1812 (what do you guys call that one?) but we didn't. Nobody cares because it doesn't affect us.You guys may remember it just as that one war where you lost a colony, and that's about it. There was no major threat that wanted to invade you and it didn't bring forth any new ideas (as far as I know).
Britain:Oh well, we lost a colony. Looks like we'll have to start turning towards India.

+EASYTIGER10 The Great British Empire continued to dominate large stretches of the world and didn't reach it's landmass peak until the 1900s, so it affected only a portion of it's land and people but all of the colonists.
+NitroCharizard you are the first American on you tube who actually realises why this war doesnt mean much to the us in the UK, most Americans I speak to just can't wait to tell me that "they kicked our asses" as if they're the only ones who ever did that the truth is we have been getting our asses kicked since about 50AD when we became a Roman colony, our history is a series of great wins and humiliating losses, we've won and lost many colonies in battles with the Spanish and French and America was just another colony back then, the fact that they went on to become the most powerful country in the world is great for them but at this point in history it was seen as just another colony and not worth wasting too much time, money and manpower on when there are other places to discover.
+EASYTIGER10 France, Dutch, Spanish also "gave birth" to what we all USA today. The war started in the North East, where most British colonies were.

Hi John, I just wanted to say that I really like your obective view of not only US, but world history in general. I think that if history books were as realist as your videos we would have better educated children that would realize what is truly important about human values and development and the actual mistakes that history books are supposed to teach us. Hi, I'm from France, and I agree with you; if it weren't for our support in the american revolution, this would be the history of Southern Canada.

It would have taken longer for the Americans to win their cause and there is a possibility that they would have become discouraged, but it they hung in there then they would have won in the end. When the British invaded the cities, the Americans took over the countryside. Wherever the British went the Americans would move away and establish themselves somewhere else. The British would have eventually realized that they could not win this war in the face of a determined and collective American population. They might have won if they had used their "divide and conquer" strategy. Can't imagine what shape that might have taken but they could have disrupted the American effort if they could get the individual states sufficiently angry with each other. There's a thought!! Because of the way the war was fought, the outcome was inevitable. Britain learned something though. They learned to adjust to their colonies aspirations and even to let go when they no longer wanted to be associated with the motherland. That may be why the empire lasted so long.
Given how it turned out, (only with the support of one of the 3 competing world superpowers at that time) we can easily assume what would have happened if France hadn't supported the americans :
- the english would have won ==> history of New England
- the battle would have lasted much longer, thus weakening both the americans and the english ==> history of southern Canada and northern Mexico
So yes, if it weren't for France's support, this would not be the history of the United States of America.
Ger0 You misunderstood my comment, GerO. I said the Americans would have won anyway, as long as they did not become discouraged by a long war. The money, weapons, munitions, and troops that France provided helped pay for the war and to win the final battle. There were more foreign troops fighting with the Americans at Yorktown than Americans. The final battle sealed the outcome of the war long before a long drawn out guerilla campaign could have ever succeeded, but even without foreign help, I believe the Americans would have won eventually. We have seen so many guerilla type wars in more recent times that prove that a well equipped and trained army cannot defeat a determined guerilla force fighting at home: Algeria, Viet Nam, etc.

The slave issue in early US history (1776-1850) was mostly there because the founding fathers thought independence was more important since the southern states would vote no on Virginia's proposal of independence. However they set up the basis for free slaves in the Bill Of Rights and in the Declaration of Independence. In the continental congress, if one state voted no on independence, it was rejected. So it was critical to make ALL the states happy with the resolution before they could pass it.

Hey crew of Crash Course! I am from the great mitten state and currently enrolled in a university! Right now I am in an American Experience class, and as I am studying I watch a chunk of crash course that pertains to our section we are on! 3 weeks or so ago I received my 1st college A on my multiple/fill in the blank exam! I dedicated my score to my teacher in 10th grade and you guys! Last Friday I took another exam and I nailed it on the head again!
I'm British but grats On your independance! I mean ppl say that you allied with the French and spaniards but how else would you have won? Any way you had courage and spirit and got there in the end!
Then the british were like "HA YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE IMPORTANT" and went on to conquer an empire yet to be matched that the sun never set on with a total square mileage of 13 square million miles, like 4 times the size of america today lol well done.
Yes we did have the biggest empire. But Americas here to stay. Doesn't mean the Brits don't have some influence today. Also we'd probs have more influence if we left the eu! Silly Obama, I like you but you've been a silly person recently.

Johnny Watts I googled "canada" and "atrocities" and it spit out an apology Canada gave to its Indian population for the poor living and education systems that it's forced on them for 100 years. I mean the details are bad, but that's a pretty small stain on an otherwise very positive history.
For comparison, Americans massacred their Indians to the point of near extinction, and the British committed atrocities to Indians on two different continents.

All men ARE created equal, they grow up unequally...women aren't men. Thus unequal.
Native Americans were never inequal in America....
They were only relocated to reservations, they were living in land that was claimed by United States. Natives were always allowed to vote and live with the rest of the Americans.

pijef That is what white kids are taught in school. I recommend to read some Native American literature like Basic Call to Consciousness (Akwesasne Notes). Quite different point of view there.
No other country at the time had votes for women, that's a ridiculous metric to use. It happened in New Zealand first more than a hundred years later.

Great video. I actually learned something. We had a test on the revolutionary war, however everyone in my class didn't do too well because it was mostly about matching dates with events.

so, i'm taking college classes from one of my favorite authors..... I love that it only took me 7 videos
The main reason Britain lost to me was the fact that they overlooked one big problem. And it was big. The Atlantic Ocean. As John stated, the colonists had home field advantage, while the British had to import everything from Britain. If the colonists needed cannons, they'd melt down bells. If the British needed cannons, they shipped them from Britain. If the colonists needed troops, they'd knock on their neighbors (or neighbours if you're gonna be like that) front door. Britain again had to ship from Britain. Makes fighting difficult, especially when you don't have a clear strategy. But if you're gonna go there, yes the colonists had help from Spain, France, and Netherlands, ending Britain's naval supremacy. But in all fairness, they didn't jump in immediately. They waited a bit to see whether or not it was a lost cause. I will now wait for people to tell me I'm wrong.

this is an older video, but I till want to say thank you. It was entertaining and informative, but perhaps more importantly hinted that just because we as a society in These United States are STILL working on implementing the ideals this country was founded on, and we should NEVER quit. Yep. I didn't take the AP class, but I took normal US History last year and I was really good at that so I decided to take the test this year. I'm trying to cram the entire year in one night.

Fun nugget of info I found when researching for my Historiography Paper for my Senior Seminar for my BA in history is that the first abolition societies in New England cropped up around 1774-1775, coinciding with the start of the AWFI/American Revolution.

Love the video. But I don't get the point of the whole 'did the American revolution really change things' spiel at the beginning. Obviously it changed a lot and set the stage for bigger changes down the road. A revolution doesn't have to revolutionize everything to count.

Movement towards all-encompassing equality is, relative to this time period being discussed, a vastly modern idea, which didn't really take shape until the suffrage movement in the early 1900s and only spread to other races, as well as homosexuals and other groups from the 60s onward. This kind of equality simply wasn't the done thing. The ideology of the revolution was, unquestionably, a vastly new and momentous concept that changed how governments treated people and people treated (and perhaps mistreated) governments, which we can attribute in part to America's unique historical development which these videos endeavor to illustrate.

You shouldn't try to revision history in only the context of life today. Just because the "big" social changes that are relevant to us today did not occur in these events does not mean they are not important. I'm talking about-- you guessed it: the removal of racism in law, women's rights, and who runs the country.
While those three topics are big today, it's important to realise that they are so big and important because of what happened back then, and also realise some more important things happened back then than what we deal with today. To dismiss history as unimportant because there weren't any social reforms that we would see today is to miss much and to never gain a half-understanding of history itself.
