In this video I show you how to change SRAM direct mount chainrings. I wanted to change the 32 tooth chainring to a that came on the SRAM X1 cranks on my Trek Remedy 9 RSL to something slightly smaller to aid climbing. I found a 28 tooth steel chainring on wiggle going stupidly cheap so I picked it up. So whilst it was a job that needed to be done, I made a video on the process on an X1 chainset although its the same process for changing chainrings on xx1, x01, x1 and gx chainset.
I’ve re-uploaded this video with greatly improved audio at this link

Thanks as couldn't get through with quiet talking and ear blasting beats lol
I love when a video makes it look so easy, and I spend an hour trying to do step one.
You need a long allen key not one from a pocket tool. I found pushing a long lever down with my foot did the trick. Had to do it multiple times before I could spin the rest out with the otherside of the allen key.
@@marketingsam Actually, I needed a crank puller.
The eagle crank by all accounts is an extreme pain in the ass to take off.
Thank you followed your instructions the perfect how to video.
I had to put a piece of tube over my Allen key to get the crank bolt to loosen but apart from that I have changed my chain ring successfully.
One very happy Chappy. Was a bit scared as I haven’t changed a direct mount chain ring before.
I changed my chain last weekend and the bike sounded like a very grindy not nice metal on metal sounding bag of bolts.
Now she’s back to her silent self again.
Should have changed it the last time I put on a new chain.
Great instructional video. Not only helped but got me dancing too 🤣
Thanks for this video! This is exactly the information I was looking for.
One video editing tip for you: look into volume leveling between your voice over and background music.
Cheers for the constructive criticism, I actually recorded the voice over using some old iPhone headphone and even as I was editing I was thinking if anyone comments about the crap voice over quality I'll invest in a proper mic.
You'll be glad to know the next video with voice over will be done with a Blue Snowball mic, so expect greatly improved quality.

My guy, great video, straight up and simple, big ups!
Great step by step video. The audio of your voice was a little faint in sections but layout was superb! Cheers!
I love how accessible they've done it in SRAM. To replace a chainring on Shimano cranks you need 3 prioperetary tools. Here's just 2 standards ones.
Thanks for the vid. A lot easier than I thought. Cheers!
Perfect! Just what I needed to do the job myself.... many thanks 🙏
Thanks really liked that you went over making sure the chain is the correct size too.
This video is great allowed me to do this myself without having to pay lbs. Thanks very much !
Great video mate, really helpful and informative. I also liked the little tips along the way.
Excellent video, clear explanation
Great info! Please consider doing them without the music, or keeping it much lower throughout.
Done already! If you check out the first pinned comment, the pop up banner or the end card it should take you to a version of the video with much improved audio.
Good video! One small way to improve next time would be to make the speech be a bit louder relative to the music that plays between speaking. Thanks for recording this!

Looks pretty easy I have to change my front ring from a 32 to a 34 😁👍
I was going to do exactly the same did you think 34 ok as thought about 36 ? Cheers
@@Quadlaners got the part too change it but not got round to it yet.
I bought a 34t ring
On thing they don't tell you in all these videos is that you may have to use a crank-puller in order to get the pedal arm off. I have to use it every time for my new Trek bike.
Im surprised by this. When they were first released and back when i made this video direct mount chainrings were only available on more premium chain sets. This tech must have trickled down to budget chainsets now.
Thats was good, think I can give this a go!
Great video. Thanks so much, but why on earth would anyone put a crapfit bb on an alloy frame?
Great info, but music is too loud in-between speech
Awsome ...very helpfull cheers dude ...iv got the same crank set but with an eagle set up ...to cut cost on my bike they didnt put the carbon crankset on hence why i have the same as yours .
Really helpful! Thanks man
Moz, this is very helpful, as I also am considering going from the Sram x-sync 32 teeth to an after market anodized 28 teeth ring. What about "offset," and how do I know what offset I currently have? I notice that the offset in chain ring offered have some 3mm, while others have more. And my eyes may be playing tricks, but the 28t ring in the video looks to have a pronounced bulge, compared to the 32 t. My own Sram 32 teeth when viewed from above does not appear to have any offset, it looks "flat." Any help would be appreciated.
Well it’s a right can of worms your opening, hence why I didn’t cover it in my old video. You are right, I used a “standard” 6mm offset sram chainring rather than the 3mm “boost” spacing.
A standard single chainring has 49mm spacing from the centre of the BB, whereas the Boost is at 52mm, this is matched with a cassette that is also spaced out to match.
The complexity come with the design clearances on the frame, if I had gone for a big mountain bike single chainring like a 36 or 38 tooth size with a 6mm offset it’s likely it wouldn’t have enough clearance and crash into the frame. I’m my option the chain is most cases is tolerant of these different chain lines, in fact in someways on it could be seen as improved as is more aligned in the climbing gears.
@@MozOnBikes Thanks Moz, for the info, especially on the chain's tolerance of less than ideal chain lines. I had an opportunity to look on the back of my Sram chain ring, and it says "zero offset." Nobody is carrying zero offset chainrings, as far as I checked! So I might end up with a chain ring that moves the chain over somewhat. Since I mash in the lower gears and spin in the higher gears, I would want the chainline more towards the bigger cogs, where I am applying more force such as in climbing. Since you have the experience, would I get the 3mm offset or 6mm offset of a new chainring, if I wanted the ideal chain line more towards the bigger cogs? Thank you.
Nice job mate !
Super helpful, thanks!!
Nice video Moz, currently I've got my bank in the air. Crank off, cleaning parts down ready to replace the chain ring. One question, can I use Comma multi purpose grease to lube the bits I'm putting back on?
Hey Jay, sorry didn’t get a notification of your message, had quite a few questions in the last week.
If your bike still apart you should be fine with a multi grease like Comma.
@@MozOnBikes No probs, I did it anyway as lbs confirmed it was ok
Some time ago I moved from 32t to 28t and I think there were no chain links removed. Just a derailleur adjustment.
Nice vid. Nice bike
I think I have the same transmision and I cannot intall a bigger cassette according to Sram Gx specs....so Chainring is the cheapest way. Did you notice any changes? I have a 32t...and wanted to try 30t
A 2 tooth change is not really noticeable immediately. It’s more towards the end of a long day having that slightly lower bail out gear make that last climb less of a knee grinder.
Thanx😉👌
Thank you
Hi there nice video very imformative. Just want to know if your using a trek fuel model? Can a 36t chainring will fit on 2018 fuel ex 8 29er eagle components? No one can answer that in trek cutomer service but some mechanic said that yes by putting a spacer or token to move the chainring rightward in milimiter so the teeth will not get rid in the frame. Is it possible do you think any idea? Dont it get wear the other components if it put a spacer just to fit the 36t chainring?
Hi Maristle. Mine is a Trek Remedy RSL so a little different. I would have thought a 36 chainring would be possible, but like you say a spacer may be needed to make sure the teeth of the ring have adequate clearance to the frames chain stay. I don’t think the spacer would cause any noticeable wear difference, ridding in mud and dust is probably way worse! Hope that’s of some help!
Moz On Bikes many thanks.
Excelent vid. Could not hear your voice tho
Alex C just re did the video with a better voice over at the following link

Hey, nice vid. I'm about to change my 28T chain ring for a 30T in the same design/model. Do you think I have to add chain links? I'm also thniking about going for an oval version, opinion?
I'm riding a 2016 Specialized Camber Expert Carbon 29'er.
Thx!
Was my bike put together the wrong way because the extraction bolt is on the drive side
No, it’s probably just one of the 3 different SRAM axle designs they’ve came up with in the last decade or so. My version is called a GXP, but there’s also a BB30 version and the newest is called Dub. I believe that both BB30 and Dub have the bolt on the drive side.
@@MozOnBikesthank you for the quick reply. You should rewrite your reply as a pinned comment for all of the non bike mechanically inclined people like me so they don't think their bike is fucked up...like me
Do you think the 36t will match in 10-50t eagle cassete? Hope you answer my question.thanks
Which off set the chain ring has for trek fuel 7
I’ve got no idea which chainset is on a Fuel 7, it quite possible changes year to year 🤷♂️
hi, do know the largest 1x chainset that can fit on a 2022 marlin;6? thx
Assuming you mean chainring size, not crank arm length! If it’s chainring size I’m afraid I have no idea at all, kind of a complicated question, all depends on the frame, the chainset, boost or non boost, if your willing to deviate from a standard chainline and what size chainring you’d like. Best bet, take it to a good bike shop that sells a selection of chainrings and ask them to see what would fit.
@@MozOnBikes yes, the chainring size. Where I'm from it's called a sprocket really. That leads to my next situation, no local shops. Over the summer I was in the market for a bike and as I travelled to multiple states/cities I realize that there was a major bike shortage. So, the first bike I saw I bought and I love it. For a big guy, the bike would be perfect, only I'd like a bit more speed on the road. I was thinking a 36t or 38t, just not sure if it fits.
excellent vid thanks
4:50 what type of BB is used on the bicycle?
Hey does going up or down in chainring teeth size affect the chain length? I have a 32t chainring and i want to change to a 34t chainring i feel like the 32 is a bit soft riding . Thanx
Yes, to keep thing stats quo you need to add a link for each tooth increase in chainring.
Thank you
What was the size of your chainring 3mm or 6mm?
Good instruction but the volume balance between background sound and voice over is not good. Constantly adjusting my volume during video. Thanks
Hi Robert. I’ve actually re-edited this video with improved audio.

Great video but just turn up the audio a bit! Thanks!!
Done already! If you check out the first pinned comment or the pop up link during the video it’ll take you to a re-edited version with much improved audio.
I just got a 2018 Capra with a 32t cog and 9-46 cassette. I am used to a 28t and an 11-42 cassette. I hate climbing and usually let it coast downhill without too much added peddling. Do you think its worth it? Any loss in power I am used to might be kind of made up with 9 cog in the cassette instead of the 11 I used to have (that's my thinking any ways).
Well it’s hard to say without knowing what your local trails are like and how strong a rider you are. There’s an app I use called Bike Gear Cal that I use to compare gear ratios that’s free and quite good. I think for me a 28t matched with a 11-42 is a bit too low. I only tend to use the 42 as a bail out climbing gear when exhausted.
Hi can i ask what difference did you find 32t with a 46 climbing gear to a 28t with 42t climbing gear, i am just about to change from a 32-42t to a 28-42t in the hope getting up hills is going to be easier or should i go for broke and put a 46 on the back with a 28t on the front( Chain length problems me thinks)
I am about to swap from a 32 tooth X01 chainring to a 26 tooth X Sync chain ring. Have you noticed a difference when climbing now ? I tend to ride the South Downs and am hoping for some improvement in performance. It would be interesting to hear your views. Thanks Clive
Clive Lister. Have I noticed a difference when climbing. Yes and no. I don't think it helps climbing faster having a smaller ring, but what it does help is climbing if your doing multiple climbs over a long ride. I found at places like Bike Park Wales I would cycle to the top quite happily on the first few laps never touching the 42t on my cassette. But as fatigue sets in throughout the day on my last climb I found I was using it as a bail out gear. Personally in my experience an oval ring works better for climbing and you don't have to go for such a small ring. I'm looking to buy a 30t oval next.
Hi Moz, great clip just what I was looking for.
Have you changed to a oval yet? I'm looking at changing my sram 32t x-sync on my optic 29er to a absolute black 32t,What brand are you looking at? any thoughts or opinions welcome.
+Grant Ta74 I actually have a 30t oval on order from superstar components. I’m going to re-do this video once I get it as I have a new mic and the audio is pretty awful on this one. I quite like ovals, I’ve got one from a year or too back and I find it defo aids climbing.
Its that 28t 6mm offset.
Laiza Briones
Yes it is, should have really gone for a boost option ideally, but this chainring last less that £10 on amazon at the time so I took a punt on it. Worked fine whilst I had it fitted.
Do I need to add more chain links if I change from a standard circle 34t chain ring to a 34t oval chainring?
No. The overall length needed is the same.
Whats the benefit of going with a smaller chain ring?
The gears will be lower. So it will be easier to do very steep climbs. However you do lose some heavy gears so won't be able to go as fast.
I have a trek remedy like yours, but i have bended the chain ring and threw it away.
Now i dont know the offset anymore.
Your video does not show it very clear and you have not mentioned.
Can you please clear that for me?
Yeah man if yours is a boost trek you need a 3mm offset ideally. I actually ran a 6mm offset for some time on my boost RSL without any issues, but if your in the market go for 3mm offset. Also amazon sell the steel chainrings pretty cheap so that’s worth checking.
@@MozOnBikes Thank you very much for your fast answer.
Im going fo an oval ring aswel.
How do you repair stripped tapped holes in the crank ? There is not enough meat left for re tapping to M6.
Hmm, depends on what tools you have available. If you had access to a pillar drill i would say carefully oversize drill the holes and use a high quality steel thread insert like a Keensert. But the thread recovery tool may actually cost more than the cost of a new crank.
Many thanks. You are spot on and it will be a weakened area.
A 28T on an Eagle - you trying to climb vertical walls on this thing??
Well I think you could climb a vertical wall with a 28t on an Eagle. Unfortunately I only had a 10-42 at the time so was trying to get the low range of an eagle setup .
So
do i have to clean that think when i took it off?
Silly question, why go for from 32 to 28, what are gaining or losing by doing so?
Well this was before I installed Eagle on my bike and I was looking for an easier climbing gear when doing multiple laps of BPW.
Are you sure about removing chain links? I've read elsewhere that you only remove one link for every two teeth down on the chain ring?
That’s correct. You remove one link for every 2 teeth since only half the chainring is engaged with the chain.
Great vid. Voice over could be louder. Thanks

Hi, it looks like the 1st chaindrive has a 6mm offset and de 2nd one maybe 3mm i guess.
Shouldn't the same offset?
Yes. You're right. On boost wheels you need 3mm of set
why did you change the offset?
Whats the name of th "lotion" ?
How did you find the range when moving down onto the smallest cog whilst descending? Did you find much of a loss in power?
+Nick Rees it’s no good for fire road bombing, but it’s great for single track. No loss in power, I can’t see why there would be in comparison to the 32t original chainring.
Can this be possible on x9 cranks?
All depends on which year and model of the x9 cranks you are referring to. I believe that a lot of the X9 came with a double chainring spider that would you could swap out for a single direct mount chainring.
nice cideo, what is the name of that background music?
Drive-Otis McDonald.
Can you talk about getting the proper offset when choosing a new chainring? That was not obvious to me when I started looking for parts.
Thanks !!!
What song?
Its one of the Otis McDonald tracks from the yt creator studio, I can’t remember the exact song name.

Moz On Bikes Nice job! Much better. Used your video to replace my chain ring.
Informative but I could not hear your voice and in contrast the music is WAAAAAYY too loud. Like I said, still informative.
How much NM???
Erik Toupal at which point?
I'm changing from 30 o 34, do I need a longer chain? can someone send me spares? :v
Well to keep the status quo you’ll need 4 extra links. Chances are that your current chain might be too short and over stretch the rear mech. A new chain is very cheap, just buy a new one.
👏👏👏👏👏👏🤙

Nice tutorial but the music is 100% obnoxious. In order to hear your voice the bass "music" would literally rattle my 400 watt Klipsh subwoofer. Very annoying.
Hi Bill. Sorry you don’t like the music. (But hey copyright free music is generally pretty poor, but it could be worse still and be god awful country and western)
I re-edited the video and upload the same video but with much improved audio.

A link is also pinned in the first comment and there was a drop card to it in the video trying to guide people who find it difficult to hear.
I think it’s ok on mobiles or tablets, but it sound like you’ve got a home cinema and obviously there’s a clarity issue when bass is available.
The lesson I have taken away is don’t edit videos on an older iPad with crap speaker or the levels will be well off.
Hopefully you’ll find later videos of mine better.
@@MozOnBikes Thanks for responding. It's a good video. It helped me do the job faster. It was just annoying having to click the volume up and down constantly so I thought I'd mention it so you would be aware and possibly fix it, which apparently you did. Again, good job.
The audio is terrible. Useless
Rafy Vega check out the first line in the description or the pinned top comment at you will find a link to a new version of the video with greatly improved audio.
A 3x9 is far superior system than this bs system. Sorry but I don't understand how this is so "in vogue" having so many disadvantages.
100% would disagree, especially on a fully suspension bike. 1x allows optimised pivot locations for reacting chain torque and creates for space for an optimised structure.
Not to mention no chain suck, no cross chaining, superior chain retention, easier maintenance, less chain wear and lighter weight.
Ugh...music. Terrible
Hi! Is it possible to move the crank towards the frame to adjust the chainline?
