Many times in the show and the book states dragons are smarter than humans, I think people foget that's a George R R Martin's dragon, so it can be as magical as he wants. Then if humans can think about these things, a dragon could do it as well. Also, it may have a smaug vibe since Tolkien's basically everybody's inspiration, as said by Martin. So, it can be smart, but still look like an animal, just like humans

It is heavily implied that those eggs eventually became Daeneyrs’, as it is referenced that they would “turn to stone” without the heat of dragonstone. I had forgotten how devastating that scene was; how Drogon nudges his nose against Danny's dead body as if asking her to get up, like a child asking his mother to wake up, and when he understands that she won't, he roars in pain, then his rage kicks in, and destroys the throne, the mere reason for his mother's death.
It's notable that even though he never trusted Jon, Drogon didn't try to burn him, either, for being the one who stabbed Danny, it could have been because he's half Targaryen, or because he saw him as just a pawn in the Game of Thrones. He did what he "had" to do.

The sadness in this scene shown from Drogon, in regards to his mothers death, his anger towards Jon and his intelligence is on another level. He is extremely angry at Jon and wants to kill him, decides NOPE. I'll take out what everyone has been fighting for so NO ONE can have it and Jon can sit in his misery knowing this..
But what I think this scene really showcases most of all... is the power of Drogon's "fire". At this moment all his rage, sadness, pours out of him and in his second breath of fire (crying) he melts the Iron Thrown. Jon also notices this as he looks back at what's left of it..
I think this is a nod to the book readers, as it's said... only Balerion's fire was hot enough to melt iron. I think here, the showrunners are showing exactly that. Connecting the books to the show, that Drogon is the reincarnation of Balerion. It is here, in this moment of Drogon mourning the loss of his mother, we (audience) have confirmation...
    Yes, Drogon is Balerion reincarnate.

Drogon did what he had to do. No more Throne, no more madness.

He breathes fire on the back wall, blasting down what remains of the great red blocks of stone.
We look over Jon’s shoulder as the fire sweeps toward the throne-- not the target of Drogon’s wrath, just a dumb bystander caught up in the conflagration.
We look through the blades of the throne as the flames engulf it, and blast the wall behind it.
We see the throne in the flames, turning red, then white, then beginning to lose its form.
