I've been watching your videos a lot lately and I just want to let you know how much they have helped me as a fledgling interpreter! I sincerely appreciate it. I was wondering if a possible video you might do would be like a simulation with a poor phone connection? That's what's really been killing me. I never have any difficulties understanding the Spanish in your videos, but I so often have a difficult time understanding every word patients are saying to me, even when I actually AM familiar with each word. I bet this is a common problem for OPIs!
Just an idea! Thanks again for all you have already contributed to the interpretation community! You're awesome!
Always glad to know the videos are helping out! I don’t think a video like that would actually help and I wouldn’t know where to begin. What kind of problems is the poor connection causing, volume fluctuations, static, words cutting out, etc. If the connection is bad and you cannot understand the other party there is not much you can do except to inform the client of the issue. Let them know that you are going to be asking a lot of questions to give an accurate rendition. (Hopefully will they hang up and your next session has a better connection) I try to be as clear as possible on the videos to help you concentrate on the interpretation and nothing else. I hope this answer helps and although technology is a blessing that allows us to work remotely, technical problems are out worst enemy. We must ride out the storm and do our best when it happens. Good luck!
@@Interpretyourworld Thank you for your response! Honestly, even a regular recorded phone call would be helpful, with a normal connection quality. Maybe I'm crazy, but voices sound pretty different over the phone, like there is a specific kind of audio distortion that makes certain sounds trickier to distinguish during phone calls. Which I guess is is why, when saying letters or spelling things out over the phone or radio, people will often use the phonetic alphabet to ensure a proper understanding. At least to me, a regular voice recording and a recording of a phone call are easily and immediately distinguishable. I have decades of experience with English phone voices, but very little experience with Spanish phone voices, which I believe makes a difference.
But I totally get if it would be tricky to record this kind of exercise over the phone, and you already do so much for the community, so I really don't mean to make any kind of imposition on you!
Ok, I understand what you mean. You are correct, phones use an equalizer to cut sound frequencies so the voice can sound clearer through such a small speaker. This in turn does not sound natural. That is actually a good idea to have a few videos like that. As soon as I have time to edit the next two practice videos, I will upload a phone line version of each.

Thank you for informative videos:) I am a Remote Video Interpreter
if you don't mind, is there a possibility you can make a videos on how you deal when the patient is a minor that speaks English but the Non-English parent is in the room? Because usually, doctors and patients speak nonstop: do you summarize to mom after a couple of sentences or right after the doctor spoke I interpret even if it "breaks" the flow between the patient and provider. Also, minors can sometimes speak VERY softly and unclearly, so any suggestions on what to do in these scessions?
And last but not least, a video on how you deal with family members that want to interpret ? These scenarios can be uncomfortable Im sure. I know Im really good at my job, but I constantly want to improve and develop better ways to come across certain scenarios. Thank you!
This might help. ua-cam.com/users/shortsy8TWHZpD-_U?si=dTYCPbhhlGlh0BnU Just to make it clear, make sure the client gives the summary for you to interpret for the parent. You should never summarize a conversation yourself. I have been scoffed at by other experienced interpreters for this practice, so be careful. I will never interpret conversations because it takes a high toll on my mind, and I don't get paid enough to suffer that much, lol. You can also keep on reminding and interrupting the doctor to give you a chance to interpret if the summary thing is not for you.
The company policy where I work states that if there is another interpreter (ie. family member or whatever) in the room we cannot stay on the session and must disconnect. We can only stay in a session if the patient or the client want to speak directly to one another and they want to keep the interpreter in case there are some miscommunications and that is the only time that we are permitted to monitor a session.
For the minor not speaking clearly, just make the problem known to the provider. Doctor the patient is very soft-spoken and is not speaking clearly, I will have to clarify many times with the patient to provide an accurate interpretation. Is that ok? And then you just do your best.
This channel is amazing thank you for all the videos they're very helpful!
Glad you think so!
Hi can you please make interpretations videos where the patient is on the line and not with the doctor and include where you introduce yourself to both the doctor and the patient or do series of leaving voicemails (interpreting) for the patients, thank you
Sounds like a great idea. I had not thought about it before. Expect some soon.
@@Interpretyourworld for IA Assistant app, just download and ask any question like "write me a conversation between a doc and a patient" and you get everything you need, we would really appreciate more videos if possible . Thank you

Excelentes escenarios para medical interpreters
Gracias!
Muchas gracias
De nada
Hi! Is there a way to see both the English and Spanish translation?
Yes there is you can support us on Patreon to access all the goodies, www.patreon.com/Interpretyourworld
extremely helpful!! May I get your payapl email as I tried through Patreon's and it didn't work out so to become a member. Thanks a lot and best luck!!
Thank you for your support! Unfortunately, Patreon is the only membership we offer for the time being. You can always buy us a coffee or give us a super thanks as well.
