Many thanks for this. I live in South Africa, but my childhood days were in Moss Side, circa 1952 to 1956. My folks had a grocers shop, 100 Great Western Street, just before the lights at Princess Road. Great and nostalgic times: GWS Methodist Youth Club, the Wycliffe cinema, the Odeon on Whalley Range, and the park opposite our shop on Great Western Street. And, of course, the home of my still beloved Manchester City. Some 70 years on: the memories linger on. Many thanks. Robert H. Fidler, KZN, South Africa.
@robertfidler7344 Hello Robert, I lived in Whalley Range, at that time ( Manley Road ) I recall the last film shown at the Odeon Cinema, before it permanently closed down was The Alamo, starring John Wayne( appx 1962 ) strange how somethings remain in the memory. Sorry for being boringly nostalgic. Anyway, Peace to all.
Brought back many memories of shopping with my mum in the early 60's. My grandad used to drink in the Alec (Alexandra pub.) We used to go in the UCP cafe. In the late 60's I used to go to a great material shop with a friend, whose mum would run us up the latest fashions. Got my first record from Marshall's record shop. It was a great shopping area; Whalley Range & Moss Side lost it's heart & soul when that went. I love that piece of music as well. Thanks for the memories.
My dad, Dennis Viollet played for Man Utd during the 50's and 60's. He grew up in a house on Clinton Avenue in Moss Side:) Thanks for posting this video.
@RViollet Hello to you, came across this site by chance. I saw your Father play many times for Man Utd, in 50's. I'm ex-Manc, I've lived in South England, for over past 50 years. I've just been reading a Biography of your Father, by Roy Cavanagh and Brian Hughes. I'm not sure if/my, message will get through to you after 11 years. Anyway, ATB.
@@alankirkby465 Hello and thank you for your message.Hope you're doing well. Always nice to hear from United supporters. Hope you enjoyed the book. Best Regards, Rachel
stephen gregory great memories i lived in ends or street went to princess road junior school 1960 onwards until they demolished mosside.my child hood memories can only be remembered thanks to you.
I am 57 yrs young lol I remember the good old day the time was somehow a lot better people were a lot more friendly u could talk to some on on the street no problem nowadays every one in in a rush I remember Sunday was so relaxing and satarday was town day we took 192 to piccalilly the best time of my life
Alan Milewczyk except it wasn’t thriving. The regeneration of Hulme was necessary because far from thriving, it was a neglected and run down area getting worse and less economically successful year on year. Everything was not always better, and change is sometimes improvement
Went to Manley Park school in 60's - My mate's Billy Western, Leonard Moor what you doing now lad's. I lived on Cambridge Ave. Man it's changed now, drove past few week's ago, heart breaking like much of the UK. Remember that PSM camera shop, my Dad would pull up and gaze in the window. Really great video - thank you.
My Dad was born in Moss Side 1920 ! We used to go to the swimming baths there from Brookway High School for our swimming lessons ! I don’t remember it looking as nice that would have been Late 1960s such a shame I bet it’s even worse now !
I lived in crosscliffe street at number 54 and my nanny lived at 52. Absolutely loved it x does anyone remember tommy lowther he had a little brother called jimmy I think they moved to carnforth when they started pulling down the houses
First of all thanks for the great videon and music. my name is Russell, I was born at 314 Great Western St Moss side, I was born in 1949, and lived in the chippie, along with my 2 Sisters, 2 brothers, Mum and Dad. And no they wer'nt good times, in fact living in the moss was bloody miserable, it was one big infested cockroach grot hole, and i was glad to see the back end of it when my mum sold up and moved us to Broadbottom in Tamsside. Sorry but i dont mean this response to be offensive,
Cycled all around here and Princess Road. Some great shops at the time. I remember PSM Cameras and noticed its boarding up at the end there. I just enjoyed riding my bike everywhere from my home in Old Trafford.
Thank you very much for posting this video it brought back an awful lot of very happy memories and a tear to the eye , I was born and grew up on Endsor street from 1956 to 1972 when our houses were demolished and a community destroyed for a supposedly better future for the area a fabulous video , thank you so much , if anyone watching this remembers me please feel free to get intouch my name is Ian Thompson
What a great video. I lived in Moss Side and Whalley Range and remember Alexandra Road and the park.It was where Mum took me shopping.Brought tears to my eyes watching this and I am saving it to show my mum and dad ,both now in their 80's.I know my mum especially will love it.Thankyou for taking the time to put this together
Thanks for all the comments. I miss Moss Side I knew so very much. We were all poor but we were happy. Getting bomfire wood, penny for the Guy. Exporing empty old houses. Getting bruised, scratched and mucky.... Things that made us. Things this generation will never know. On a side note does anyone remember the old Our Ladys Club on Raby St? And Father Lee. I played snooker there many a night as a teenager. ,
I could honestly say I visited the majority of the shops on Alec Rd during the 60s, born just off Moss Lane nr the Baptist Church, as others have said, it was a crime to demolish this community.
This is brining bk alot of memories!!..i remember the shopping pricint so well, mum use to take me shopping with her to do the big shop I also use to go to Alex park and play by the pond!!..i went to princess park school in the 70s.🙄
Bring me memories back! I was live in Chorlton, regularly used a bus pass Moss Side area during 1965 to 1975, Amazing place with plenty of shops, sadly now to full of cheap council houses and flats for immigrants only.
My mum had a shop on Alex Road, and I played in the park all the way through my childhood-remember the pond! I spent hours fishing there LOL. Went to Whalley Range High School
Real communities destroyed, the big supermarkets swallowed up the smaller shops on high streets. Shopping now is soulless, robotic and boring. Progress is not always for the better, I felt a great sadness watching this video.
Hey, ive been looking at your videos and ive found them very intersting. I dont know if you still use youtube and are still active since this was 11 years ago. Ive been currently very interested in whalley range high school. It would be appreciated if ypu cpuld give me information on the past about the school and if you know anything more facts in greater deapt. Any information would be useful, thank you!
Walked up and alex rd so much of my early day as a child later on married Mrs pickles daughter heath and herbal store move to withington rd old Martin's bank left to go back to moss side estate nr fern leaf .now new wife st Anne's Lancashire uk. John Rooney
It angers me how they break up great communities like this and what they replace them with is always awful, my dads from whalley range and it would be so much better if they'd left it how it was.
Shopping centres and vibrant communites destroyed, along wth the economy that supported them. Immigrants to the city at that time were jumping onto a burning economic ship! No wonder troubles followed..

Wow this brought back so many memories. Shopping on a Saturday morning with my Mum, the old shops and much more. Thanks for the memories
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Janet. That's all we have left of the old Moss Side. Our memories.
This makes me sad. I'm 56 and remember all this. Wish I had a time machine - would never go forwards, only back.
I love looking at these pictures makes me reminisce of the good old days when life was less complicated.... I miss those days

Hi Yvonne. It's not a group. Just a couple of videos I did years ago, to look back at my childhood. I hope it brought you some pleasure. Take care.

Go there at your peril
What they did to alex rd is a travesty
What they have done to our childhood is a crime.
It angers me how they break up great communities like this and what they replace them with is always awful, my dads from whalley range and it would be so much better if they'd left it how it was.
