  • 'On This Day 1978: Parties Battle in Manchester Moss Side By-Election'
On This Day 1978, political parties canvassed voters in the Manchester constituency of Moss Side, in a by-election triggered by the death of Labour MP Frank Hatton.
Labour, Conservative, and Liberal Democrat activists trundled around Moss Side in campaign buses and caravans, with local candidates being joined by party leaders including Margaret Thatcher and the now-infamous Cyril Smith. Meanwhile, acclaimed British actress Vanessa Redgrave campaigned on behalf of the Workers Revolutionary Party.
As well as being defined by local issues such as housing, the campaign was also marked by violent clashes between the far-right National Front and anti-fascist demonstrators.
Labour won the by-election with their candidate George Morton, in one of the last battles for the seat of Moss Side. The constituency was abolished in 1983.

Hah, many thanks for posting. The reporter and crew got their postcodes mixed up. The sequence started in Hulme, not Moss Side, a jump cut to Chorlton, the semi's on Wilbraham Road. at least the report featured the determined efforts of anti-fascists in Moss Side and Hulme.
