I disagree with the poster who said that Joanna seems tired of her own songs. I think this is a beautifully executed and passionate performance, and superbly captured by the video, too. There is none of that back-phrasing, used by artists as diverse as Lou Reed and Frank Sinatra, that signals to ME that an artist is bored with the song and is desperately seeking some way to enliven it (take note - that isn't the way! It almost never works). There are two officially released recordings of Cosmia. The one on the lp "Ys" is lush with full orchestral accompaniment, and that one the "Colleen" ep is a little sparser, but is propelled along by some great percussion, especially in the early / middle section, and has an extended outro when all the players get to do their thing. I wondered how Joanna, with "only" her harp, would convert this to a solo performance - but of course she did so with aplomb, bringing her vocals right to the front, and the absence of other instruments (along with the crisp visuals here) allows her virtuous playing to shine completely unshaded. She provides her own rhythm where it needs to be strong, and dispenses with most of the outro, while enhancing the wordless final vocal segment so prettily that I am convinced it must have some very personal association with the titular Cosmia.
I think people are forgetting she's basically an orchestral performer she can't just fuck around her pieces are really long and really complicated like her harp permanence here while singing is utterly amazing.
It's amazing to see her live. I'm from China, so I don't get any chance to see her live performances in the flesh. Thank you for the great video. Btw, the description has me lol... The first time I ever heard Joanna Newsom, I was immediately fascinated by her melody. That, combined with the length of her songs and the exquisite vocabulary, creates a 'folk epic' sound which is unlike the sound of any others. She's really exceptional.
oh my god this videos quality is so prominent! it seriously looks like her skin is oozing gold from the reflection of the harp!!! i feel like i am there, thank you from Australia!
Just came to say I used to be subbed and had a random dream where you were at phantogram’s show last night and I was close by and it made me upset that I was that close and didn’t even know it was you lol. Dreams are weird.
Bvcvbbvx Jvcxcghh She’s gotta warm up those pipes for her next album though. And the only way she knows how is by playing like 2 hour shows multiple nights in a row by herself I guess. I’d be surprised if she didn’t seem tired. But it’s still such a beautiful performance.
There is truly no one like her.
Absolutely right
Right On
Joanna Newsom is the greatest female musician ever exist.
really one of the most beautiful artists of the last many decades.

@@Penguin806 A man of taste ‼️
Joanna inspires me to try playing a harp. I just looked at the prices of them 😮
She seems tired of her own songs

I don’t think so, obviously I don’t know her but this song is about the sudden death of a friend and I’m sure it’s emotionally draining to play live
crappy remark, maybe you are the "tired of your own self"agent here
