The small hole is 1 3/4 “ the large hole is 2 1/4 “ I made a board and it works like a charm. I put my hulled nuts in a crate and use a pressure washer to remove any remaining hull and clean the nuts for drying. The board is a Great idea
Damn dude this is genius. Both ways. I just finished doing about 100 by hand with a kitchen knife. Cutting the husk in half, splitting it and squeezing the nut out...Like an avocado basically. Huge pain in the ass. Thanks.
That is a very nice garage floor to stain with walnut hulls. I just dump a pail of nuts into my cement mixer with a few softball-sized granite rocks. Add water and let them roll.
A friend gave me some walnut tree saplings about 7 years ago. This year they are everywhere. Unfortunately we've had horrible wet, windy weather for 3 weeks since they dropped so they're all brown & soggy but will try your method! Thank you.
So excited to have found this video! I have an old Black Walnut tree that looks half dead, but it just keeps producing an abundance of walnuts every year. But I hate working with them, until now. The piece of wood with the 2 holes is the BEST idea I've seen on here!! Thank You!
The wooden box with the holes is a pretty good innovation, the truck and the Jacks is an old way of doing them. My uncle did it with his tractor in the front yard. The bucket and drywall mud stirrer are the perfect way to clean all the black sludge off of them the dirty water can splash out of the bucket, that will contain juglone so be careful where you pour it off. I use a milk crate to pour off the dirty water after spinning, I do mine three times for each batch and they come out super clean. If you have access to a few milk crates that will be a good way to dry them off, milk crates can be stacked so they don't take ups so much room in your garage or shed! Be advised any way of cleaning walnuts will result in the release of a lot of juglone which kills other plants much like deadly nightshade, Black Walnut trees are known as the killer tree!. You don't want that on your yard or garden, the hulls will contain this substance as does the nutshells and the water you clean them with in the bucket. I use the nutshells on the edges of my landscaping mulch to keep down Creeping Charlie and other plants that invade the edges of my beds. You can compost the hulls but the toxic effect of the juglone can be degraded in two to four weeks. To crack the nuts I use a nut cracker I got from Roots and Harvest, its a good cracker but the bolts are kind of cheap so I replaced them with better quality case hardened bolts. So far the cracker is holding up very well with the new bolts, before I replaced them the bolts bent after less than fifty nuts. I can do hundreds of nuts in a real short time with that cracker after the bolts were replaced with no damage to the bolts! Roots and Harvest, put better bolts in your cracker and charge another 20 bucks for it you dopes!
why is it so important to have the nuts so cleaned off? I know that getting the hull off helps speed up the drying process of the nuts inside the shell. But i've seen others talk about an extensive cleaning process. I dont understand the necessity completing cleaning the shells, when they are not edible and will be tossed away eventually.
The car setup was hilarious. You could make a video of just chucking walnuts under that thing --- I was laughing so hard. I mean it's genius, and yes totally dangerous, but very entertaining. The board with holes is a great idea. We discovered some black walnuts growing nearby today and I wondered if we could try harvesting them. But where to dump the herbicidal water leftover from rinsing them? Just down the drain? We could return the hulls to the area from whence they came, but I don't see hauling all that rinse water....
I just read that auto mechanics can use the outer layer to clean metal. Just learned that I have 3 large trees of black walnuts. You can get $6.00/lb and at retail $12.99 😱 I had no idea what they were so my zero turn just ran them over 😩 my wife used her plant identification app BINGO😱 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 letsss goooooo
Those hulls are priceless, they make an awesome dye, they will make the fish come to the top of the water, the will stain your skin but also make it hard and peel off. The dye is gorgeous.
Laughed and laughed at the tire trick. You are so right though. That is so dangerous, for so many reasons. I have used a truck to. However I put a board down. Dumped the nuts on it. Then drove and backed over the nuts. This way you don't run over yourself , or drive into something. I will deffently use that paint mixer trick thanks. Never seen that before, or with the board with the holes in it.
The board definitely! Thanks as a kid I took the outer cover with an ax and then crack the nut. I have to search the neighborhood for wonderful black walnuts. Thanks!!!
Man you went from clever to hillbilly real fast. When you said dangerous I was thinking hammer or something, not putting the car in gear while jacked😅😅
Ah just pour the bucket of nuts on the ground, preferably a driveway (not cement or asphault) an drive over em, pickem up an put em in a cement mixer with water in it an let them wash till clean pour the load out thru a seive over a wheelbarrow an let them dry in sun then put em in a bushel basket an let them age in a cool dry place. Thats squirrel proof. Thats how pappy taught me.😊
Wow... that is really neat. I just moved to a piece of property in northern Arizona, with lovely trees... now I know what to do with them. I can not wait to try... BooksbyAFoster
If you boil the hulls you have a liquid that when applied topically will greatly relieve the pain of shingles. Disclaimer: you may have darkened skin for weeks or much longer, but it’s worth it!
We have two trees - and I’m just starting to harvest them! I am just stomping on them with my heal to get them out of the husk, I’ve heard of running them over - but never the truck method!
What about the maggots?I'm not too keen handling even with gloved hands. I've just been smashing with my shoes And rolling them around Until they're mostly clean, Then pick them up.
Best video I've seen and I've watched ALOT! you already know your genius, I am telling you thank you for sharing your genius! Excellent infinite love and gratitude 💙 💫
You don't need to bake them? I found a wild tree with dried walnuts all around. Can I take vise grips down there and just start cracking? Cashews and pistachios are toxic if not done right so I am concerned.
First method i used to watch my Grandfather use. Just knock a knot out of a board and hammer them through. Second method i think i saw on a cheech and chong movie...
Convince a small kid to pick them up, tell them it is practice for Easter egg hunting. Or train squirrels. The truck idea, brilliant but can see many things that can go wrong.
I just put them in the drive way in a long line about a tire wide and drive back and forth a a few times. Then I pick the nut out of the outer part quick and easy, put in bucket and rinse with a hard spray.
Great video, thank you, I have a new walnut tree growing in my front yard. I can see how folks would be tempted to use the truck tire method but man that could be dangerous. And know that when you stop one rear tire from spinning the other tire is then moving at twice the speed of the speedometer with the arrangement of the gears in the rear differential. And your spider gears are spinning like mad as well through this method, it really isn't good for the rear differential.
I like the simplicity of this. As far as better ways go, I saw someone use a pressure washer instead of the paint mixer. I've not tried them, but I like both ideas.
Next time I buy a new washing machine, I'll save the old one for cleaning the husked nuts. I'll remove the screen in the drain and let the water run into the driveway.
The small hole is 1 3/4 “ the large hole is 2 1/4 “
I made a board and it works like a charm. I put my hulled nuts in a crate and use a pressure washer to remove any remaining hull and clean the nuts for drying. The board is a Great idea
The truck method is a triumph of hillbilly engineering. I salute you.
Bruh! That's kinda genius. I have like 8 walnut trees in my yard and I have macaws so I wanna harvest them to save money.
I remember an old farmer took a really old antique Maytag washing machine and loaded it up with nuts, filled it with water and let it run for hours.
I was thinking a cement mixer would also work without making gramma cringe.
The technique with the truck is nuts.
Yeah, this guy needs a set of "Truck Nuts" hanging off the tow hitch ... only made to look like walnuts and not testicles.
But looks fun lol😂
Damn dude this is genius. Both ways. I just finished doing about 100 by hand with a kitchen knife. Cutting the husk in half, splitting it and squeezing the nut out...Like an avocado basically. Huge pain in the ass. Thanks.
That board with the holes is genius! Don't think I'll try the truck method, but thanks for sharing!
That is a very nice garage floor to stain with walnut hulls. I just dump a pail of nuts into my cement mixer with a few softball-sized granite rocks. Add water and let them roll.
Hey that's how you roll eh?
Some times I use my 7 iron and a concrete wall. Golf stance practice. Liking the truck idea. Lol
Done that, I was covered in stain. Four!
great ideas!! now i can collect more. have been dehusking by hand in my kitchen stainless sink.
so is this where TRUCK NUTS originated? "Hey Ted, thanks for the walnuts"- "No problem, theyre from my floor in my garage!"
You could probably also use the truck tire technique to pluck chickens

I dump the water in my lawn. Never hurt it at all. Only hurts plants that don't like the Jugulone like tomato plants.
Just wait till dark and pour it in the neighbor's yard.
@@garywebb5927 hilarious!!!
You are the most innovative dang person I have ever seen in all my life.
LOVE your methods! Got a major kick out of the tire method! You are So ingenious, the little bit of pressure on the vise grip is GENIUS!
Those hulls are priceless, they make an awesome dye, they will make the fish come to the top of the water, the will stain your skin but also make it hard and peel off.
The dye is gorgeous.
That's brilliant Brian, thanks for sharing. More ingenious videos please.
Thanks for posting this! I have 2 large black walnut trees in my yard… but have never tried getting the nuts for myself. This year I’ll try it.

Loving the red green way

“My buckets got’s a hole in it” -Hank Williams Sr.
What size diameter holes did you make? Its brilliant!
That tire shooter version is hilarious, def gonna stick with the bucket+ paint stirrer.
Thanks for the video. My daughter loves to collect the walnuts from our tree. I like the whole system
Great idea
Black Walnut Stain is an excellent trap Dye.
The ingenuity in this video is on point.
Wow, it's great! Thanks!😎👍

I live in S.e. mi. and I tap mine for sap it makes great syrup.

Fantastic video! What size holes are best for the board?
I was told to put them in a feed bag and drive over them, that way you can control the nuts. I like your board with the 2 holes system.
This video is highly entertaining!!
I do the bucket way with my cordless drill. Worked great
8 minutes in... you probably wanna do this outside.. lol
cool idea about to board with holes in it
Method 1 awesome and thank you
Quad and a canoe in the garage. I like it👍
What size holes work best?
people make simple things difficult. they will not stain if you let them dry completely and the husk just falls off.
We have two trees - and I’m just starting to harvest them!
I am just stomping on them with my heal to get them out of the husk, I’ve heard of running them over - but never the truck method!
The simple method won't kill you by asphyxiation.
Might try it. Thanks.
Good idea.
We got quite a few black walnut trees on my property where I'm living at in Tennessee
What about the maggots?I'm not too keen handling even with gloved hands. I've just been smashing with my shoes And rolling them around Until they're mostly clean, Then pick them up.
Nice job
Solid. Thanks!
Cool !
Well done. Thanks.
You could sell the brown liquid that comes off as sunless Tanner.
was wondering about that. gotta test it on a patch of skin
Very nice. Thank you
What size holes are those in you your husking box?
ask again in ANOTHER year please he's recovering from when the truck FELL off the jacks

I just dump em in the driveway and run over them. Wait a couple days and pick em up. Easy peasy. That being said I love your tire method. Lol
Dude Dad would love this.
Greetings.
I really liked and Subscribed .
Thank you very much.
what are size are the two holes in your board ?
I moved into an house with two walnut trees and I'm glad you let us know the month, because I wasn't sure when to expect to harvest.
Ours starts producing in end of August they dropped all October a little at the end of September too
What sIze holes do you drill out?
Best video I've seen and I've watched ALOT! you already know your genius, I am telling you thank you for sharing your genius!
Excellent infinite love and gratitude 💙 💫
I cleaned walnuts as a kid. We soaked the hulls in buckets to let them rot off,, then strained it for stain.
What size hole do you recommend?
Board is awesome
You don't need to bake them?
I found a wild tree with dried walnuts all around.
Can I take vise grips down there and just start cracking?
Cashews and pistachios are toxic if not done right so I am concerned.
not only are the nuts tasty I tap mine for sap they make a great tasting syrup.
How have I not heard of this?
First method i used to watch my Grandfather use. Just knock a knot out of a board and hammer them through.
Second method i think i saw on a cheech and chong movie...
What size of hikes in the board?
As kids my grandfather had us kids just dump the walnuts in the gravel driveway. He just ran over them with the car to get the husk off.
Convince a small kid to pick them up, tell them it is practice for Easter egg hunting. Or train squirrels.
The truck idea, brilliant but can see many things that can go wrong.
I'm curious on that chicken wire bucket thing, can yiu do a video on that?
That might be the coolest shit I’ve ever seen!
brian my family has 3 black.1 tree has uour nuts the other 2 are size of tennis ball we use a tow behind sweeper to pick up the nuts
The truck method is an OSHA reps worst nightmare, lol!
I just put them in the drive way in a long line about a tire wide and drive back and forth a a few times. Then I pick the nut out of the outer part quick and easy, put in bucket and rinse with a hard spray.
Definitely had to check comments to see if people saw what I did 😱 the truck was hilarious 😩😩😩 power washer and bucket is pretty good as well
Thats hilarious 😂
The truck method works great but you need an open differential, a posi truck will take off if you put one wheel on the ground
I don’t have a walnut tree, am deadly allergic to black walnuts, and have no interest in cracking them. I still like it though.
Your neighbor is going to lose his mind when he finds out your using his truck and messing up his garage
👍
Uses vice to hold vice grips. We just use the vice to crack them 😁
looks messy ! as i remove the Hulls with my corn sheller that's older than myself 64 years Young ! i visualize building the ultimate machine !
Love the hole in a board method...truck, not so much.
That second way is too expensive now! First way was brilliant though
I like the simplicity of this. As far as better ways go, I saw someone use a pressure washer instead of the paint mixer. I've not tried them, but I like both ideas.
Definitely have both in the garage but I think im starting with the mixer first
@@auggiesgarage7684 mixer is so easy. The tire trick is ridiculous tho 😂
The first method is the best the second not so much and dangerous! Kudos sir thanks for looking out
"Pretty damn tasty" 😆😆
this is so stupid and dangerous can't wait to try it
Or you could just put them in a bucket full of water for two days and then dump them and all the green stuff is gone
Using your truck seems to take more time!
It's July 8 and I found a couple on the ground already (zone 6). Isn't this 2-3 months early?!
Oh no I don't know what zone I'm in! I think I need to be re-educated?
Next time I buy a new washing machine, I'll save the old one for cleaning the husked nuts.
I'll remove the screen in the drain and let the water run into the driveway.
The nut cracking device looks like it opens them really easily.
