Arianna Basha What about 1 samual 15:2-3? god orders the slaughter of children and infants. In what “context” is this defensible?

krombopulos Michael krombopulos Michael krombopulos Michael Hi krombopulos Michael . I hope I can clear up a few things. First as Jefferson said when reading the Bible you have to take it in context, and remember that different genres will include different literary devices. For example, 1st Samuel 15:2 Is an Hyperbole. God isn’t literally saying wipe out every single Amalekite in existence, he simply saying defeat them. This type of Hyperbolic writing is found in all middle eastern historic writing during that time period. Heck, we even still use that type of figurative speech today. When you have a big win against an opposing sports team you’ll often hear hyperbolic non-literal statements like “we destroyed them” , “ we slaughtered them” and “we wiped them out”. Same concept. In fact we have *proof* that Amalekites we’rent wiped out. They literally appear 15 Chapters later in 1 Samuel 30:1 . If they were truly genocided, how would they appear 15 Chapters later? Also, They Amalekites were told to be wiped out in Deuteronomy 25:19. So again, if this was truly meant literally, why would they keep appearing. Furthermore, if you read the next verse to 1st Samuel 15:2 You’ll see Sail telling the Kenites to flee before the battle because they were kind to them when they were coming from Egypt. So we also see that God allows for the preservation of groups who don’t even worship him. The reason why the Amalekites in particular were supposed to be Attacked is because not only did they Attack the Israelites leaving Egypt. But they were defiling the land with horrid abominational acts. Hope that helps!

Samuel Appiah Um ok...not sure what this has to do with god commanding the killing of children. But since you brought it up, you are wrong. I guess you haven’t read Samuel 15. God did not say it hyperbolically, 1 samual 15:8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword. 1 samual 15:18 And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ God even gets mad when they spared sheep, calves, and lamb because he wanted them totally destroyed. They even spared king Agag, who was put to death after Samuel pointed out to Saul that he didn’t follow through with gods command to completely destroy the amalekites. Thats 1 Samuel 15:2-3 in full context, seems to me your the one who took it out of context to make an argument.

I am not an expert on this exactly but the reason I understand That God commanded the Israelites to destroy the people was because he understood that these children would grow up to either resent the Israelites for killing her parents and they would live life in a detestable way like sacrifice their own children to they gods as acts of worship.
Ultimately none of this back and forth matters. Their is nothing said that will allow you to see God for who he really is except God himself. Excuse me for saying this but wouldn’t it be arrogant of me (a finite being with limited understanding) to expect God (an infinite being hold all understand and power) to explain why he said kill the kids too? I pray that you stop debating people like me who will fail you in giving you the answer that is needed to you and that the LORD (who you openly admit to not understanding him and his ways) would soften your heart to ask him why you don’t believe he has our best interest at heart. I wish I could mean it when I say friend ( because I want to be able to have good heart felt conversations with you and help to understand why you are disappointed in God and why you push back against the God of the Bible besides you don’t like what you have read) but this place is just a fake place where we stand very little chance of ever having a serious friendship which saddens me. This world is sad and in need. But to me what the saddest is that those who need the most love don’t understand the origin of Love. That’s not a direct reference to you just me rambling about my sadness for our society as a whole.
Can I ask this question? Why if you don’t believe in the God of the Bible being who he says he is, why do you care about debating him with others?

    • @ariannabasha9316

Krombopulus I have just now seen this comment and I have actually just read Case for Faith, which I believe deals with the answer to this thread.
An Intellectual Answer with the underlying assumption there is a God:
People assume that what's wrong for us is wrong for God. However, it's wrong for me to take to take your life, because I didn't make it and I don't own it.
For example, it's wrong for me to go inside your house and break your things. But I can do that in my house because I own it.
If you believe in a God, he is sovereign over all of life and he has the right to take it if he wished. In fact, we tend to forget that God takes the life of every human being. It's called death.
Testimony to the character of the Amalekites:
These were a persistent and vicious people.
Their mission was to destory Israel.
These Israelites were chosen people through whom God would bring salvation to the entire world through Jesus Christ.
They had been following the Israelites and had been cowardly slaughtering the most vulnerable among them--the weak, elderly, and disabled who were lagging behind.
      An Emotional Answer:
Isaiah 7:16 talks about an age before a child is morally accountable before the child knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right.
King David spoke of being with his son whom died at birth.
Socially and physically, the fate of children throughout history has almost always been with their parents, whether that's for good or ill. The Amalekites were throughly evil and violent and depraved culture, there was no almost hope for those children.
      An Better Answer:
Finally, most of the women and children would have fled in advance before the actual fighting began, leaving behind the warriors to face the Israelites. The fighters who remained would have been the most hardened, the ones who stubbornly refused to leave, the carriers of corrupt culture. So it's really questionable how many women and children might actually have been involved anyway.
Besides, under the rules of conduct God had given to the Israelites, whenever they went into an enemy city they were to first make the people an offer of peace. The people had a choice: they could reject that offer, in which case they wouldn't be killed, or they could reject the offer at their peril.
Now, I'm not expert in this manner, but I have done some research. Because, faith is something I personally struggle with this issues. There are hard questions that need to be answered. So if you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask. I'm always lurking on UA-cam.

Andréanne Pinard it actually depends! Repetition is a way of emphasizing and so is chiastic structure. So it’s fun to figure what the text is trying to highlight!

Hey Jeff, I love this video! Great information. Would you consider making another video about how to actually do these things? Such as how to find out the context (if you would say commentaries, maybe talk about how to find a good one... I saw that you recommended one in the description which is super useful, but there are a million out there, so maybe some good authors, other commentaries, etc.) and how to find out other things like what you said with Psalms. I really want to learn a ton more about both of things, but I just have no idea where to start!

Aloha!! Thanks for the vid...what a timely reminder for me to read the Bible with more focus on CONTEXT. I think many times I read the Bible with no relation to time and almost look at each passage as these individual scenarios when they actually all link together in a sequence of events that give it a deeper meaning... Like you said, bringing it from black and white to color! GOOD STUFF.

Excellent advice. There is one more thing that I would add. Martin Luther pointed out that the Bible will seem to be full of contradictions that are impossible to reconcile unless we understand that there are two basic doctrines interwoven throughout the Bible, namely law and grace. The most important function of law is to convince us that we are sinners who cannot save ourselves, e.g. Romans 3:20 and Galatians 2:15 and 3:10-11. Once the law has done its job of destroying our hope of justifying ourselves before God by our obedience, we have no other option but to turn toward grace, most clearly expressed in the gospel, which tells us that when we put our faith and trust in Christ, our sins are imputed to Him and His righteousness is imputed to us, so that now we are free to stop obsessing about ourselves, as in "Is it OK for a Christian to ...," and instead turn our focus outward towards our neighbors and work toward the goal of loving them as we love ourselves, not to win God's approval, but as an act of thanksgiving because we already have God's approval based on our faith in the finished work of Christ for us.

What helped me is to read the background/ brief summary then I would continue to read. Also if you start with the first 4 books of the new testament that helps a lot. I was told not to start with the old testament or revalations first as that may be confusing. Also I read the ESV version as, it usses very plain wording as opposed to the St. James version that is writen in very old English language that can be confusing as well.

    Good, sound advice! :)
I've thought for long time that it was significant WHICH mountain Jesus was saying His disciples could speak to. I mean, it was Zion, where God has said He would dwell, the heart of Jewish culture! It must have been shocking to His disciples - not to mention Matthew's Jewish readers! - that Jesus could speak of *that* mountain being removed!
I've been interpreting it (especially because of the fig tree bit) as being one of Jesus' foreshadowings that the Temple culture was coming to end soon. Your interpretation of it as Him empowering the disciples for what God had for them to do later in Acts has certainly given me a new take on it! :) Thanks for expanding my horizons! :)

I am Gali, in the year 1980 I lost all my hopes, I became a thief and club dancer. At that time I heard about Christ, the Lord spoke with me though the Scripture.
JOHN 14:6 “I AM THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE NO MAN COMETH UNTO THE FATHER BUT BY ME.”
I surrendered my life to Lord Jesus and confessed that He is the only Lord and died for my sins to deliver me from all my sins (Karma). When I totally surrendered my life to the Lord He has delivered me from evil spirits, which suffered me about 6 years. I became a new person in Christ. I love Bible so much and started memorizing the scriptures.

By the grace of God I have memorized Five Thousand (5,000) Verses from the Holy Bible. Every week I also remember all the verses. Morning time I remember about 1500 verses for praise, worship and prayer. (Including 100 Psalms). This practice helps me to grow strong in the Lord and also to help others for the glory of the Lord. John 14:6 is my favorite verse; I preach this word to many unsaved people that they may find the peace in Jesus Christ because He is the Lord of all.

I need some help. Im not looking for sympathy just advice and what you would do in my situation. (I know of course pray about it) I would like to think im a strong Christen guy (I read the Bible daily, try and attend church regularly, and most importantly pray everyday) but just recently the love of my life and I put an end to our relationship. I prayed everyday that she was the one. She is amazing and everything im looking for. We moved kinda fast and both don`t have much dating experience. However we both felt a very strong connection and have very strong feeling for each other, we both knew there was extreme potential for us, i can truly say ive never felt so strongly for anyone. Shes moving to another state for her masters degree, so she needed some space to get through the move and I just wanted to be as supportive as possible. But today she ended things, basically God told her she needed to work on herself before she was in a relationship, she didn't think we were growing closer to God together due to sin and she felt God didn't want us together. Though I myself, never felt closer to God and thought i was growing stronger everyday and wanted God as the foundation of our relationship. We would pray together on the phone (which i was never able to do with any one else). I wasn't the spiritual leader i should have been. I really think this is all my fault. I have a very difficult work schedule working nights at an airport, Wednesday thru Sunday morning (i get off at 9AM) So it makes it very difficult to get involved in a Church regularly and have a strong support group. She said that her wish for me was to be able to find a good group of Christians as support and have a true encounter with Jesus. I guess my question is are there any online support groups or different programs for people with this kind of schedule? Im not looking to move on, im just looking to grow closer to God and find people who are strong in their faith. Sorry for the life story, but any guidance or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey man can you please give me some advice about lgbt and homosexuality because I’m bisexual and love and believe in Jesus. I accepted him as my savior but there’s still a little something off. Since I have a lot questions when one of them is homosexuality... I asked a question to people at my bible study if gays or bisexuals go to heaven and their answers were “no” “I don’t think so” etc. I felt completely lost and drained of confusion and bursted our into tears because of not feeling free from my sexuality. My mom is a Christian and she think homosexuals are nasty and monsters that don’t belong to god which made me really mad and upset because I’m one of them. But I do know I’m not a monster because I have so much love and light inside me and my mom sees that but doesn’t really help me with my sexuality. I love Jesus very much with all my heart and god of course he’s my savior I accepted him in church. I feel trapped and I need Jesus freedom right now since people will just judge. I am crying while typing this because I just need non judging heartfelt advice coming from a bisexual christian. I don’t want to go to hell either because as long as I love Jesus he’ll let me come.

I'm struggling to read the bible and my unbelief hurts me sometimes. I really just have my faith and I never want to lose that. There are some verses in the bible like James 2:19 that say even the demons believed in the Son of God. What does that mean for us? We have to show God that our faith is in action or is it just by faith like in John 3:16?

Thomas of course we are saved by faith(belief in the finished work of Jesus).when it says even the demons believe it’s talking about how there’s people who believe in the existence of God but choose not to follow or worship Him.That is not a saving belief because you have to believe in the finished work or Christ and accept that free gift, not just simply recognize His existence.
This is my best understanding of it,If i said anything wrong please correct me or feel free to add to it

Thomas I would say if you’re struggling to read the bible, what i find very helpful is set a certain time aside each day where you just read/study the scripture. It’s easy to get caught up in life and not make time to read.

I would also recommend praying for a desire to read God’s Word and pray to find more joy in it. When you have the desire to read God’s Word and actually find joy in it, you want to read it daily! I’ll be praying for you!

What about exodus 21 verse 21? The laws are given and instruct on how to treat slaves and you can beat them as long as they don’t die within a few days, it even says that slaves are your property or your money.

nunya business what about 1 samual 15:2-3? God orders the slaughter of children and infants??? There is no context where this is defensible.

nunya business Like Jeff said, use context. In ancient NTS the path to slavery was varied in many ways and in many cases voluntary. In cases where people were forced, they could've been captives of war or convicted criminals paying their debts both to society and to God.

Slavery in biblical times and slavery in early America had both different motives and how people entered into slavery. It's always good to question, so thanks for commenting!

KJ k, in what context is 1 samual 15:2-3 defensible?

    • @daltonbarron6483
      @daltonbarron6483 6 років тому

KJ I don’t care what context it is that is always wrong and that is my point I wouldn’t expect a book inspired by god to include laws on how to beat your slaves and that they are to be purchased from the heathens around you. That sounds to me like men writing it because men can benefit from slaves, you can try and sugar coat it anyway you want but if you were the slave getting beaten I think you might have a different opinion.

I love reading Proverbs..it’s the development of making a person god fearing..just by practicing those particular verses..don’t read the Bible..INDULGE in it.

Ps: the read the Bible in one year isn’t good. Make sure you read, comprehend, dig into the scripture with the 4 I posted and then move on. I missed so much and twisted scripture like most do who don’t read or read with the spirit do, for so many many years!!

One should scan the Bible not read it. One should scan for truth. The scanner is thus like a flying eagle soaring high and only diving to the ground for prey. It helps if you have a question in your heart when you scan, flip through the Bible. The first commandment is to love God. There are two ways to love God 1: seek the truth 2: serve the needy people. Most Christians do not realise fully that Jesus died to send the comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, which guides us into all truth. In other words if we do not seek the truth Jesus died for nothing. John 16 and 8. If you ask with the heart of a child, God will answer you, and you will not receive a stone when you ask for a fish. You may think the truth is complicated, but it is not, it is simple -- for this reason the truth is hidden in the Bible in stories, numbers, symbols and parables.
