    What if the Bible wasn't primarily a weapon or rulebook, but a story?

    • @HBOwenOralCommClass

      I think that this is the first time I have ever strongly disagreed with you. I believe that God's Word should not be reduced to being viewed through any one of those lenses; as you said yourself, there is an element of truth to each one that you describe. While it is indeed a narrative, I think it is far more important to remember that it is God's specific revelation to us, He shows us what His general will is in His Word, and His Word has final authority. While it is harmful to view it only as a rulebook, as you mentioned, God is indeed a Judge, in addition to being our author and creator. It is harmful to view it only as a weapon, but His Word is indeed our weapon against our true enemy in this world, which is made clear in Ephesians 6:10-18. I believe that the danger in viewing the Bible as just a narrative or a story is that it effectively robs God's Word of authority, and He is THE Authority. Just like we can't view God only through a lens of just one of His attributes, it would be wrong for us to view His Word through just one of its attributes or facets as well.

      This is a really good opinion and I totally agree with you. But I didn't interpret the video like you did. I think Jefferson actually meant what you are saying, but just a little bit unclearly. I also think his main point was to uncover the fact that some people read the Bible with just one lens. Which will hurt the relationship between that person and Jesus.
      So indeed, we need every lens God has given to us so we are able to receive every truth, gift and everything else he wants to give us. We need to be aware so we don't but him in a box. Because that's kind of impossible.
      Thanks for your post H Owen!

      ***** If there is a point to love, to forgive, to care and to encourage others and yourself, then there is a point to follow Jesus, to Bring the Kingdom of Heaven on this earth, and to be a Christian. Being a Christian is not being separated as better people from others, but being a follower of Jesus, and being in the practice of the ministry of love. That's how I consider myself as a Christian. And I think it is very meaningful for me.

    "For the Word of God is living and operative and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, both of joints and of marrow, and able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
    The truth about this passage is actually not that we must turn this sword on others, but that we must turn it upon ourselves. The Word is a sword that we need to use in order to divide our soul from our spirit, to cast away the unwanted darkness of sin and the world, and focus on God.

      Rev 1:16
      And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
      And what goes out of Yeshua's mouth? His Word--which we know are the words of YHVH (John 12:50)

      Carina D. Love Fulfills the Law. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself. ”Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

    • @Darlington22228
      @Darlington22228 10 років тому +1

      Tyler Ebling thats it there, Love fulfills the law. it is the solution in one word, thats why Jesus gives you just that one commandment. and by doing that you fulfill all of the law

    • @Darlington22228
      @Darlington22228 10 років тому

      You don't get it, a few times in the bible you find where Jesus was being questioned about healing on the Sabbath day, or his disciples doing other things, find out His response. Secondly, we are no longer under the law, it was fulfilled by Jesus. We have a new commandment which is to love as Christ has loved us. Again like I said, if you do just that (walking in love) you have nothing to worry about concerning the law. If I love you I wouldn't affect you in a negative way...love. Loving God and your neighbour is what all of the law stands on, so love is the fulfilling of the law.

    Jeff, thanks so so much for this video. I've been struggling about how to view the Bible and God for a long long time, and a lot of people who are non believers will mock the bible calling it a rule book and accusing God as being a cop-type figure and this is such a beautiful way to describe it to them. And thanks so much for referring us to your friends who narrate the Bible through visuals, I haven't watched all of them but it's suuch a great way to see things and really put it into perspective. I'm not religious and I label myself as agnostic but this is great! I witness too many people using the bible as something to backup their hate which is one of the biggest reasons I left my religion. People seeing the bible as a rule book; calling other people out on what they are doing "wrong" and using the bible as fuel to spread their hate.
    This is a great video and although I may not believe your beliefs I 100% respect people like you. I believe that faith is a beautiful thing but faith and the love you have in which ever god you believe in is between you and that god. No one else.

      phantom2k10 "Faith without works is DEAD." Works doesn't just mean doing good it means being good. "A sinners way seems right to them" Religion is the worst misused terminology ever. Religion is "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of an agency". Religion is not an organization or a term depicting organization. Religion is simply what one believes and practices. When one says they hate religion they mean to say they hate is organized religion or belief or organized believers AKA church. Hate on church see how far that gets you. Hating on church is like saying I hate hospitals which is actually what a church is actuated to. People hate police departments or jail or courts and rehabs, school, work and any institution or organizations that challenges or identifies what issues you may have. So even if church is hated a lot, any place that doesn't just give you total freedom to be an idiot is a hated place. Funny how no states they hate bars or clubs but they will put down any place that challenges them as a person.

    • @Jbobadilla23
      @Jbobadilla23 10 років тому

      ***** I said it was ONE of the reasons. Not the only reason. I have my other reasons and biggest one being I just don't believe. If there is a god then that's great; if there is not and once we die that's it...total blackness well I'm ok with that too. All I believe in is being good to one another; I don't care about one's sexuality, race, gender, religion, etc. If you're a good person I will get along with you and respect you.

      Jessica Bobadilla *Disclaimer: I hate using Pascal's Wager. That doesn't make it any less true.
      If God is real (which He is), you won't think it's great when He sends you to Hell because you didn't believe in Him. The consequences shouldn't be the reason for your belief, but it should motivate you to continually study the Bible so that you may one day truly believe it.

    Yes! Thanks for the video man. I think the word "story" Is a great description of the bible. It gives god so much glory and in turn it makes us relevant pieces of the greatest love story EVER.
    And just because the word story is used to describe the good news, doesn't mean that it's fictional or fake, but I believe it makes it very real.
    If I fall UP my stairs and I tell that story to my friends about how epically I failed, it doesn't mean that it didn't happened but it just means I'm retelling something that already happened...so yes, I believe the gospel is a story that happened...and is still happening!

    Awesome perspective. Something that broke the bible open for me was to think of a "golden thread" running through the bible and connecting all the stories. This "golden thread" is the story or narrative God tells, and it is and has always been about the Jesus and the cross. It is amazing how all the stories in the old testament comes to life when we ask the question: "How does this represent Jesus?"

  • @SanctusSententia
    @SanctusSententia 10 років тому

    Great video and interesting perspective :)
    I suppose there are various ways of looking at it. I've seen it as you described in the video (all of those roles) but I didn't come to quite the same conclusion about God and His subsequent influence on me per role. The roles stayed the same but the result was much more like what you described at the end. I also saw it as a love story, the parts of every bit pointing to Jesus; or a love letter from Jesus to us that we can 'respond to' by seeking the Lord's guidance about tough to understand parts, meditating on the Word and just spending time talking to Him about it. It exists in many ways in my life.
    But I like where you're going with this and especially love the project you linked to. It's beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

    When you see the Bible as narrative, you can see and read naturally from the first verse, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.", and the last verse being "I will be with You alway, peace unto you..." that shapes the context!

    for a while, i just smashed its content into my brain as truth and wisdom. then when i broke down and the walls around my heart broke down, i understood the message with love. it is important to know the true love of the truly loving father turning words of wisdom and freedom into first person. the word becomes our flesh, our actions can exemplify being Christs friend, servant, brother, and savior. Jesus is king and God is father. and we can feel the love we were meant to embody and share. who are the most important influences in a mans life? Father and Christ our true image bearer. they are the ones who see your trauma and actions. they have seen it all before and know what has happened. and they are waiting to hear us and heal us, hold us and mold us, relieve us, believe us, and receive us.

      ***** No you didn't say that in the video homie, you referred to Hebrews 4 in the video about the Bible dividing and cutting. Ephesians 6 also refers to Scripture Graphe as the sword but says nothing there about dividing it just says "sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." 1. You were wrong in saying the Bible is called a sword once in the Bible because Ephesians and Hebrews are two different places where it states it, not ONE. Second, you thought you referred to Ephesians 6 here when you were talking about Hebrews 4. I seem nitpicky only because yes it's important to spread the Word with Love like you do but you also have to be just as passionate with accuracy on the Word, for even the Old Testament Scribes long before copy machines or the printing press would throw away and redo the whole thing if they messed up on one word. Prophets and even Jesus' followers were very careful to not mess up or screw up God's messages but relayed them as accurate because God's Word (not man's words or additions/errors) are Holy and should be treated with care.

    • @Holyfiremikey
      @Holyfiremikey 10 років тому

      ***** This is why I get concerned (which I know you prob don't care because you have millions of followers or people who comment and will subscribe) because you have such a big stage to spread the gospel which I commend and am glad you have that stage but...after these years since your first viral video why have you not gone deeper in your Biblical study and are you doing it under anyone's authority? For even the New Testament states we should yes look at the Bible on our own but even the disciples who were the leaders of the early Church would keep each other accountable and correct one another as Paul did to Peter when Peter made errors. Yet you don't seem to have much theological knowledge or accuracy (I see your videos and see sOOOOO many misinterpretations, poor hermeneutics and very baby Christian emotional feelings about Scripture without a true knowledge of scholarly understandings on the topics. I know to many liberal or new Christians you are their hero because you appeal to those who don't want structure and accurate Biblical knowledge and wisdom, but just feel good stuff and simplicity. But, Scripture is the deepest Book of all time and with the relationship part of our faiths, we should know a deep and true understanding of God's Love letter as much as we would want tot know the deep love and facts about someone we love on earth.

    • @Holyfiremikey
      @Holyfiremikey 10 років тому

      ***** I know you with humility agreed when your first video went famous that the critiques on your video made sense, and that you didn't know it was going to become a widespread video which is why you admitted your points were not 100% accurate on Christianity but...after saying this you use that vid's lines word for word (which you admitted was inaccurate in some points) as the intro for your book after that??? And the vid you put up is still up without fixing the damage you did by discounting the fact that Jesus did set up religion as James 1 states "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." You claim Jesus hates religion, people point out Scripture disagrees with you (you keep saying Jesus is the center yet you leave up a video that DIRECTLY disagrees with His Word) and then you go on and write a book using this same line Jesus hates religion when Jesus says in His Word which is more true than your teachings that God did set up and accepts if it is pure. How can you do that? That's like me misquoting Einstein, even though the quote might be popular with people and make people be interested in Einstein more, if the quote is not his or disagrees with him I'm not being a good admirer or genuine fan of einstein by lying about or saying he said somehting he didn't, EVEN if it makes him more popular. This is con behavior and I can see by your ads you monetizes your videos so I'm sure you make a good income off your views but I hope this is not why you are continuing your falsehoods that misconstrue the Bible and you've not really made much effort to fix your misrepresentations of God. Go to a Bible college, learn from scholars who LOVE Christ that they wouldn't misquote or teach against His Words! Again, your intentions may be to bring the masses in but if it's on a false pretense or inaccurate, once they do come in and see that's not what the Scriptures state, it will be more worse. It's like a child being set up to go to the park when in reality the parent actually takes them to someplace they hate. The child is excited for the drive but once they reach the real destination they will DISTRUST that parent more!!! WAKE UP YOU ARE DOING MORE DAMAGE THAN GOOD IN THE LONG RUN! I'm not saying to stop, but at least let a Pastor with a good Biblical knowledge screen your video or help you write out what you will say before you go off and say feel good things which don't show Scripture correctly! Do you really LOVE Jesus? I know you DO! So fix this part of your habitual lying with good intentions!

    I actually experienced the opposite growing up in church in that I've always had a calling to be single or desired to be single and every time I got the same old "well you just haven't met him yet/ or you haven't found the right person yet". I always found it offensive and thought I don't want to find the right person, I've got God that's way more than enough. And the whole idea for a woman to be single was never seen as a calling but more as a curse. I wish that I had known growing up more people who would see it as a calling and a gift and not as a curse. I wouldn't have felt so force fed marriage to the point where I can't even stand weddings. Thanks for your video, I enjoy different perspectives.

    Could you do a video on the difference between eternal salvation and experiencing the kingdom of heaven? And why so many people get the two mixed up? Many people think that the kingdom of heaven is only experienced once you die and Jesus clearly shows that the kingdom of heaven can be experienced here on Earth.

    I see the Bible as a guide to help you get through life but it has rules and stories to the book 📖 as well. But I try to see it as a puzzle too because some verses and passages don’t make much sense to me and I read around them as well as other parts that may contradict the ones I’m studying and I put them together and I get the results I think God was really saying. ✝️✝️✝️

    I agree with you. before I see the Bible as how you described it and then one day it just came to me to read the Bible like a story book and it changes everything. I feel like the stories in the Bible are inside of me, happening within me like I have Israel within and even Jesus within. but maybe I'm wrong.

    The question was posed How do you view The Bible? To me the bible is the Living Breathing Word of God it is a word that is Alive. When I look inside I get a peak inside the mind of God and I cannot fully know his word unless he shows me so I pray God show me. I am humbled by all that he shows me its beautiful and profound and deep

    Amen dude - I guess all of our reflections are a way of understanding --- and I truly believe the Bible as story. In the beginning -- hey that's a great way to start a story - and in this case, it sets the Bible up as the story of all stories - the story starts litterally about the first things of life. Yeah that is beautiful!

    Awesome video Jeff its amazing to see these things get out into the world. Can you make a video on the saying "God Loves the Sinner Hates the Sin" it sounds nice ofc but i think we can't really understand Gods hate and Gods love ts different from ours. As in your book i like how you talk about the bible not being this fairytale buttered up book its deep and its strong. Taking that statement from before read psalm 5:5-6. This is why i myself cannot be for that saying myself. i think a video would be cool though. ( psalm 7:11)

    The only problem with the "story" approach is most people equate that term with fiction. That's how you end up with illustrations in Sunday School classrooms, of all the animals smiling on the Ark...when in reality, there probably wasn't ANYONE smiling during the Flood.

    My thoughts on this? I'd say the bible is a fuel. Fuel for what? Your soul.. I came across one time when I didn't read the bible for almost 4-5 days, couple of first days not reading it told myself I'll read it next time, till it became a habit, lead me to excuse myself from prayer, On the following days, I started getting annoyed at people who complains about work, life, issues, situations, (Like my girlfriend) But what's weird is, I usually enjoy listening and helping, This was the 1st time as a christian to get annoyed when helping the lost and sharing my testimonies.. As I continued, I started slacking off with responsibilities, I slowly backslid. I couldn't teach the young kids in Sunday school, anymore. I slowly feeling depressed. And I was asked by my girlfriend saying "what's wrong with you?" I replied "I don't know!" At the same time feeling annoyed. On the 5th or 6th day earlier in the morning. I prayed I obviously didn't know what to pray for. It felt like I forgot how to pray. Weirdest moment. Yet scary. I prayed and confessed that I have not been following God, doing my devotions. I prayed for Forgiveness. On that day. i started reading the bible, as I did. little by little, I started feeling more spiritually "Pumped" And this verse hit me good, Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
    God revealed to me, that bread is the food we eat every single day. Bread as in whatever you eat. like right now as you read this. But by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God! This is the bible which came form the mouth of God, God showed me that it's food for our spirit. A fuel, If you stop eating the bread you get weak, imagine in spirit, it's common sense that the spirit would get weak too. Now I'm not saying you're wrong, no. I'm saying that everyone has their own revelation on what the bible is. I believe there are tons and tons of revelation on the bible or what the bible is. it's a sword, a history, a story, a lesson, a guideline, a rulebook, a profile about jesus and God, its everything!
    A pastor preached one time on our bible study here, and he said this "when you read the bible the bible reads you! Meaning the more you read the bible the more it shows who you truly are!" Boom! another revelation, bible is like a mirror a mirror which shows us how dirty we are and the more we spend time on this mirror and it'll show how dirty you truly are. What would you do if you saw yourself dirty? Clean up of course! Once again bible is "Everything" It has no specific genre on it. It's hard to explain, but what God showed me. It's a fuel for the spirit, and a mirror on our current self. To get pumped and to correct what's wrong. I do love this video. I'm sure people agree and most don't, But what God has revealed to you its for you :) Share it! And others will have a different revelation on it. :D Overall! I thank you for this video. i did learn from it :D Keep it up and God bless you!

      there was a sermon that I listened to in which the theme was 'breathe'. physically, we cannot survive if we cannot breathe, right? the pastor said that our spirit is like that, too. if you do not consume the bible, if you do my read the bible, if you do not allow God to consume your life, then you are not breathing (in). you've got to continue to study about God and His word in order to breathe! but, don't forget to breathe out, either. spread His news! share it with anyone you can! put God's commands into actions in your life and you will be breathing (out). you've got to keep God in your daily life, otherwise things will start to crumble. I've noticed this, too. I'm more patient, kind, loving, and content when I'm breathing God's word.

    Hey Jefferson can you make a video or comment about christians and wine or alcohol? This is a very debated topic these days and through my own research I came to the conclusion that God'd will for us is to us alcohol in moderation and avoid the sole sin of getting drunk.

    I totally agree with pretty much all you say. Although I do think the Bible is a Christians sword, is a rule book, a map and a story. I think it is all these things, it is no more one than the other and no more less than the other. I think that's what makes the bible beautiful, it is a thesis of life that can help us fight our temptations, it gives us rules that shows us how god want us to live, shows us how to live our lives (in a general way) and also gives us the amazing history of our planet. When you see the bible as all four of these things, I think the bible becomes the amazing, beautiful, elegant book that is. Thanks man for all the great work you are doing though :)
