      Why has nobody made a mod where arrows and darts/shuriken etc.. that miss can have a "second wind" effect where if you line up two enemies the arrow can hit the guy in back even if it "misses" the one in front lmao. It would actually make archery builds more fun tbh.

    My personal little pet theory is, when you get off the boat and start the game, you character has such shitty skills with weapons that they manage to miss ON A QUANTUM SCALE. Yeah, even though the blade visually connects, it just goes through the spaces between the atoms of your target's body.

    • @ArvelDreth
      @ArvelDreth 8 років тому +178

      If the game had been made in a different time, it would just show your enemies dodging or your blows glancing off of their armor. Which would have actually been a fun thing.

    • @samdouglas32
      @samdouglas32 8 років тому +116

      That might have made it feel less arbitrary, but I don't think it would have made it any more 'fun'.
      People defend the game's combat by saying "it's like D&D". Seriously? Have they even played D&D? In D&D even a first level thief can hit with a blade ~50% of the time. Unless your dice are cursed and you can only roll 2s and 3s.

    • @ArvelDreth
      @ArvelDreth 8 років тому +49

      Sam Douglas
      I've been able to hit things more than 50% of the time at level 1. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Redguard with long blade major skill. As long as you don't have very low fatigue, you can hit just fine.
      That's the main thing which tends to stop people from hitting consistently. If your fatigue bar is down to 0, your chance to hit drops significantly at low levels. Holding the attack button for 1-2 seconds also makes it easier to hit.
      I think that better animations would have made the combat more engaging because then it's not just two guys standing still and making the same few attack animations at each other.

    • @samdouglas32
      @samdouglas32 8 років тому +31

      But choose wrongly and even a steak will dodge your blade...

    • @ArvelDreth
      @ArvelDreth 8 років тому +22

      Sam Douglas
      Yeah if you pick an Argonian and decide to use a weapon that isn't a major skill for you, you're gonna have a bad time. When you play Morrowind, you have to play to your natural strengths.
      You have to use a spear as an Argonian at first, or a bow as a Bosmer, or a long blade as a Redguard. All you have to do is actually read and pay attention at the beginning and you're fine.
      Your argument is invalid, because by that same logic I could say that Star Wars: KotOR is bad because if you only use a blaster pistol the whole game and don't get any feats for blaster combat then you won't be able to beat the game.
      Yeah, if you shoot yourself in the foot then you won't do very well. That's how it is in an RPG, most times.

    What I love about Morrowind is that by the time you are at the end of the game (Beaten the main quest, done a lot of side stuff, have badass gear) the game subconsciously makes you feel like a god. It just works, because you actually have a point of contrast at the beginning of your playthrough as you couldn't figure out how to use a sword, you were taking the Silt Strider just like everyone else, and you were treated like a commoner. They kept a little bit of that from oblivion, but they made you seem a little to important in the first 2 minutes when you were in the emperor's dreams, and even more so in Skyrim where in the first hour, you could absorb a soul of a fucking dragon

      @EpicWinNoob 9 років тому +17

      Teirdalin Shadowfall But a piece of sharp metal coming into contact with you doesn't really matter how skilled you are at using it, so in a roleplay sense, all weapons take on a ghost form when swung by inexperienced people, thats the only explanation that fits, because I don't care what roleplay rules are suggested, if you make contact, you make contact.
      Whether or not the hit is effective is up for debate.

    • @teirdalinthree9783
      @teirdalinthree9783 9 років тому +33

      EpicWinNoob True. The way the system is designed works better on pen & paper play where you don't have visuals of your blade passing through them, and the "misses" you make during these attacks in a pen & paper sense would just be you having to imagine your character swinging at the enemy and them either deflecting the attack, blocking it, dodging it, or your character straight-up missing. Older RPGs which used the pen n' paper systems like Morrowind, Neverwinter, Baldur's Gate, IWD, planescape, arcanum, etc just gave little "miss" messages. The main difference though between them and Morrowind is that in Morrowind you're from the perspective of the player and not just floating from a distance, and can literally see your blade going in collision with them; without you seeing the math which is going on in the background or why it was a miss; which just causes frustration.

    • @DatsTehUber
      @DatsTehUber 9 років тому +3

      +Teirdalin Shadowfall The problem at large is really a matter of the fact that there is a severe lack of urgency in the combat. The system being used in the game is abstracted and suits a tactical perspective with multiple characters, but you're playing it in the first person perspective which is primarily for action or puzzle games that require a higher amount of player input and skill with the mechanics. It really usually just boils down to you sitting there while mashing the attack key, or running backwards and kiting with a bow or spells, whereas in other heavily abstracted RPG's your paying more attention to positioning, party co-operation, etc. which is where most of the fun comes from.

Same thing was happening if you were walking around during the fight, to change the attack mods. Remember you had three attack options with each sword, knife, axe or hammer.

  • @adamrohrer1175

    The key to not dealing with this shit is to pick major and minor skills that align with the racial bonuses your race gets. A wood elf archer will be able to hit enemies with a bow early game. A redguard with a longsword will be able to hit enemies early game. A nord with a battle axe will be able to hit enemies early game.
    If you insist on playing a class that doesn't match your race, you gotta find some money and visit a weapons trainer. Once you get past a threshold you stop missing so much

If you want to use a blade, try starting with a character that's proficent with one. Pick it as a major skill. They just don't understand that it takes more than a couple minutes thought to create a character. Hell, I can sometimes spend near an hour perfecting how I want to start out lol.

If you hear people legitimately complaining about this issue, it means they played the game for five minuets and gave up, or they never played it period. A half decent character with a weapon they know how to use will never miss it's target. It takes literally the tiniest bit of patience to get past this small issue in one of the greatest games of all time.

    • @glitchhunter09
      @glitchhunter09 8 років тому +6

      David Nguyen
      You obviously don't know how the combat works, if you did, you'd be hitting stuff off the boat. You're supposed to pick a weapon based upon your Major skills early on if applicable. You can't expect to hit anything if you don't understand how it works. Let's say you have 5 long blade skill like in the above video and you go up to a rat. You're gonna miss a lot because your character is not very skilled with long blades.
      Now as an example of hitting things, Let's say your character starts with a spear skill of 30 or so. As long as you keep your fatigue up and your agility is a decent level, you should be able to hit most of the time with a spear.
      A good build to pick for a first time player is arguably either Steed, Barbarian, Redguard or Steed, Barbarian, Nord.
      The Redguard one gives you a better speed boost but the nord one has better defensive skills (eg Woad which gives you a magic shield, and regular magic shields add armor as an armor bonus during their duration.) and they can tank through most early game enemies. Plus Barbarian Class gives you a fair amount of weapon options early on.
      As for the steed Birthsign, it grants you a speed bonus so if you run into something you can't take down, you can retreat and heal up then come back when you're ready. Trust me, the Barbarian Class and steed birthsign alone give you like 80 starting speed.

      Yeah fuck that, my agility and long swd is high. The combat still sucks at level 14 in. Theres a good reason they never used this shit for any other game they made after. It sucks, it practically ruins the open world exploration aspect of the game because you're getting fucked up by crowds of enemies that you can't even hit all the time, but a slaughter fish or rat can take you down to a qtr health before you kill it. Chance based combat for a 3d open world title was damn near game breaking.

    I started playing Morrowind again recently, opting to play as a Dunmer necromancer type of character who specializes in Conjuration, Illusion, and Axes (because why not). Dunmer don't have any racial bonus's to Axes and they are quite heavy. However, the "Bound Axe" spell gives you a Daedric axe (which does 1-80 damage, pretty OP) which gives you a constant +10 in Axe skill while equipped and choosing Axe as a major skill during character creation leaves you with around 30-40 Axe Skill. I very rarely miss and 30 out of 100 is not a very high amount of skill, especially with low Agility since I'm playing a magic user. You also do more damage and hit more often with higher Fatigue and if you hold the attack button longer (to charge your swing).
    I think a lot of people have misconceptions about the combat system here, it's not faulty or bad it's just a different take on it. For example, in Skyrim or Oblivion if you fight a very high level monster you will always hit them but you'll do essentially 0 damage (Except you never face a high level enemy because the world levels with you, which I think is bullshit and removes any excitement from random encounters). In Morrowind you simply won't hit them. Functionally this system is the same, being unable to combat outside of your effective level range, however in Oblivion/Skyrim the game does provide some feedback which I see as a big plus.
    The caveat of Oblivion/Skyrim's system is that they can't be as deep with the skills, spells, and calculations of how combat is handled. There are no Sanctuary or SIlence/Dispell/Sound spells which augment the function of level gap hit/miss. All the really interesting spells and calculations are what draw me to Morrowind, personally. I enjoy how much thought goes in to my progression, what skills and spells I focus on, and the danger of exploring a world that doesn't level with me.

    .... I played Oblivion/Skyrim first and then started morrowind ..
    I really like the combat in Morrowind , the way you build your character really matters and you dont just trade hits like in TES4/5.
    Dont get me wrong i love these games but morrowind is actually really easy if you actually think ahead A LITTLE BIT.
    Combat is piss easy (Havent used magic yet!) , even from the beginning - dont just pick a race and class and expect to rule the world like in skyrim... **edit** Also dont just spam attacks like in the video ( I KNOW ITS A JOKE.. just saying!)
    its actually important to hold down the attack button for like half a second , also the way you move determines if you do chop/Slash or thrust attacks ...
    You dont like the game because of the graphics? Use some graphicmods and you will have a great time in morrowind.
    I play it almost Vanilla , Normal graphics , Code patch (To make stealth and pickpocketing more viable)
    and some UI mods and i am still having a blast :)

Does a person who shoots hit the bulls-eye every time they shoot? Does a hunter who aims kill the animal they were shooting at EVERY TIME? Do people ever get in to car accidents? There are a lot of variables when one does anything and actually its a good way to model life with dice rolls.

    Me personally I think the difficulty of Morrowind is much overstated. When your level one in the game the treats you like your level one. Once your skills up just a tad bit things become a lot easier. Your first few hours playing this game will have you and your character feel like nothing, hell less than nothing but it makes it so much more worth it when you build up the gold to enchant your pants so they allow you to fly, or kill someone in one blow a almighty weapon from hell. Nothing compares however I will say always hitting in close combat like in skyrim makes more logical sense, however wtf gamemakers make your game actually challenging to person older than 5.

    I love how there are always apologists. Pen and paper RPG's are the way they are out of *necessity*, not superior design, stop pretending it's a more sophisticated and cultured combat system. When you miss in D&D, the DM throws some flavour on it and describes an epic swing-and-a-miss, the enemy ducking or weaving or parrying the blow. When you miss in Morrowind, you just see your sword go through the enemy and nothing happens.
    Neverwinter Night's had awesome little dodge and parry animations to keep the roll based combat visually interesting. There's no excuse for Morrowind's abysmal combat system.

    You put melee combat in a first person / third person game, regardless of it being an rpg, I want to feel like my personal skill in moving, parrying, shield blocking, sidestepping matter. Not oh my stats are everything so combat doesn't matter. The arguments that just running up and flailing your weapon about like a dumbass is good combat, because your stats are what matters, does not fly with me.

    • @SinerAthin
      @SinerAthin 8 років тому +3

      This is why I liked Oblivion, and especially Skyrim ,much better.
      There's still heaps of improvements they could do, but it's a great improvement nonetheless, especially if you add some combat mods.
      I prefer games where the real gain is not just in weapons and shiny armor, but in your own skill as a player, meaning that even if you were naked, you could still kick ass through proper play.

    • @rikterterran3833
      @rikterterran3833 8 років тому +1

      Yeah, the Elder Scrolls games never really had good combat. Even in the later games, it wasn't really about skill but your stats and equipment. Morrowind's combat uses some kind of dice rolling system, so even if you aim and swing at the enemy, it would count as a miss if you don't have the stats.

    • @lordetern
      @lordetern 8 років тому +2

      I actually really like Skyrim's combat. Yes, stats are still involved, but it is an RPG after all, and that is one of its appeals. Skyrim just found a good medium of skill vs stats. Your stats are still important enough that trying to take on something way higher level is going to be a really tough and long fight. Yet, the fact I can move and actively participate in my battles adds to the immersion. Morrowind above is not participation. Its run up and throw dice at the enemy to see who wins.

    • @rikterterran3833
      @rikterterran3833 8 років тому +1

      lordetern I'm not sure I feel the same. In Skyrim, all combat boiled down to me is finding the best equipment or magic, having the right stats and swinging or shooting at the enemy until it dies (As well as running away and healing if necessary). You could get by the game without personal skill in combat at all, just the knowledge of where and how to get good stats and equipment.
      But I really don't see lackluster combat being a problem in a TES game since the series is more into world building and interaction. Combat isn't really the most important element in these games, even if there's a lot of it.

    • @SinerAthin
      @SinerAthin 8 років тому +2

      Rikter Terran
      Even if the combat isn't the centerpiece, one shouldn't discount its importance either.
      The RPG scene has no shortage of people who'll go crazy over a good combat system, as the Dark Souls series can testify to.
      A TES game with a good combat system only enhances the overall experience, especially since in almost any run, you'll be doing a lot of combat :P

      Despite my nostalgia to Morrowind, I can remember my own hatred for this combat system back when I was a kid. It is great that you couldn't kill the best warriors of the game uniquely based on player's inputs but indeed, this is and WAS looking quite wrong in terms of animation. They could have easily simulated the enemy dodging or the weapon skidding/bouncing on enemy's armor. I don't know why it wasn't more refined either.

A skill level of 1 in the weapon class he's using with subpar agility, Yeah, you're going to miss A LOT, because the game mechanics are saying that this enemy will reliably dodge every swing. If there were animations suggesting this however, the combat would be tolerable EVEN IF the result were the same just because you're not making contact with the enemy and hitting nothing but air.
