Speed vs. Arrow Weight Profile: Killer Instinct Diesel X

  • Today's video is pretty simple: A speed vs. arrow weight profile for my new Killer Instinct Diesel X. Using my chronograph, I measured the Diesel X speed for arrows as light as 391 grains and as heavy as 638 grains. I then put that data in excel and build an entire speed vs. arrow weight profile for the bow for all arrow weights (in 1 grain increments) from 391 grains to 700 grains. And since we have both speed and weight, I calculated kinetic energy and momentum for all combinations. If you buy a Diesel X and don't have a chronograph, this profile has you covered!

    What kind of accuracy can we hope for with 300 grain broadheads?

    • @draggindeeroutdoors
      @draggindeeroutdoors  10 місяців тому

      I'm not sure, depends on several factors. However I'm confident you can get an arrow/insert/broadhead setup dialed in to shoot the 300 grain broadhead you like.

    So, what I want to ask is, for hunting at 40 or 50 yards, what is the initial speed at which you can easily handle hunting? I would like to choose the appropriate arrow weight based on this initial speed, and I look forward to your reply very much

    • @HolySword312
      @HolySword312 11 місяців тому +1

      Perhaps sometimes the hunting distance can reach 60 yards

    Question so overall the heavier the bolt the slower the speed however better the penetration give the bolt pass through result?

    • @draggindeeroutdoors
      @draggindeeroutdoors  Рік тому +1

      Correct, heavier arrow I’ll have more momentum and penetrate better but be slower. Heavier arrows are also more stable in flight (less impacted by wind).

    My broad heads are on average 6 grains (139g)are lighter then the field tips (144.5 gr) the chart shows the velocity of the broad head would have a weight 414grain/velocity 382.388 while the velocity of the field tips, weight 417 grain/ velocity 383.339, If I use the field tips to zero with the speed ring and set the zero to strike 1/2” lower then the point of aim, do you think the broad heads would be striking the aim point? Or would they be striking higher.

    So far I am extremely happy with my new diesel x! Going for deer and turkey this weekend in northern AZ! Can't wait! So far it shoots amazing and hits hard! I'm sticking 6 inches out the other side of my target and having a hard time getting the bolts back out! Beast mode!

      I am thinking since they are both 405 fps, it should be as accurate as comparing different diesel x 405s I think they that all will be close. Just like factory ammo, there is often a wide difference from ammo in the same box shot out of the same gun

    Wow, lots of good info! My SpeedRing scope told me I was at 370fps with my 505-510gr setup, and your chart is showing 355-360, so either my Diesel is shooting just a tad faster or my SpeedRing is being generous, lol. Either way I love my Diesel X (bought on your recommendation) and am more than happy with the accuracy and power. What a fine weapon KI has given us; kudos to them and to you for helping us get the most from our equipment. 👍👍

    In short, what I want to ask is, what is the initial speed for hunting within a distance of 50-60 yards? Considering the attenuation of kinetic energy

    • @draggindeeroutdoors
      @draggindeeroutdoors  11 місяців тому +1

      Any crossbow over 350 FPS (which is 90%+ of them) will be be just fine at those distance from a KE/Momentum standpoint.

      Okay, thank you for your reply, but I also want to ask, if I use a heavy arrow with an initial speed of only around 330, can I still achieve it?@@draggindeeroutdoors

    Thanks Matt. I think this also is useful to just see what drop off you can have from different weights, regardless of your crossbow. I shoot a 385fps rated crossbow and use a 578gr. bolt and always assumed I was shooting around 350, after watching this, I am likely closer to 330. Appreciate the effort and time.

    Another great job on this review and video! I'm going through a similar test with my new M-370. I've already noticed a speed difference between the carbon arrow and the XX75 aluminum arrow both with the same 100 gr tip. This was an extensive amount of work and quite detailed. For a follow up I'd love to see how these different arrows fly and impact the target at say 30 yards?

      Thank you, James! Im going to do the same profile for the X1. When I first shot my X1 out of the box, 395 grain arrow was 389 FPS. 500 grain was 352. So similar to the Diesel X, maybe a smidge slower.

    Thank you for the helpful videos and the reviews on the Killer Instinct X bows. I am interested in buying one. Question: Can I add more weight up front on the stock 390 grain bolt and still expect good arrow flight or do I need a heavier spine bolt? I’d love to be able to save money and use the 390 grain arrows that come with the Killer Instinct but use a heavier broadhead.

    • @draggindeeroutdoors
      @draggindeeroutdoors  Рік тому +2

      Yes you can add weight to the KI HYPR's. I usually pull the stock inserts out and run a 110 insert in them with a 150 grain point. Works really well. Thanks for reaching out, hope you pull the trigger on a new bow!
