  • I am probably gonna get 2 whole views on this video, haha! BUT Introducing something new to my channel! Aka My adult ballet journey. Also starting ballet in your 20s and also why you should start ballet as an adult, too, with no experience! This isn't my typical video but has been something I wanted to add to my channel for a while because this is a part of my life :) I made a ballet playlist because I will be making more. Im not sure if anyone will watch this tbh, lol, but this is (like my lily video) a topic on UA-cam that I felt needed more attention and love. I looked for video like this on UA-cam for years and found nothing.
So in this video I talk about 3 topics:
my inspiration to start ballet 1:24
    my ballet journey 3:00
why you should start ballet as an adult - 7:37

Advice from a ballerina that started ballet 3 years ago: do Beginner Classes on youtube and slow them down so you can get all the movements correct. A few of my go-tos are Kathryn Morgan classes - she walks you through every motion. (P.S. I went on pointe last year - I was finally strong enough, and I love it!)

    Hi!
I'm 16 and I've been doing ballet for thirteen years.

Yes it is painful, but it has the power to transform pain in beauty and grace.

This reminds me so much of my own ballet journey! I started at 21 and was immediately obsessed with everything ballet. I found a fantastic studio that accepted adults and after my first year moved from adult class into nearly full time vocational training in RAD syllabus. Nearly 18 years later, I am still dancing, just took an advanced level exam (only one left to take!) and have performed with my studio and amateur companies. If you would have told me I would be doing all that at such a late start, I would have never believed it. Keep dancing - anything is possible! x

@@Werallgonnadie RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) is a specific style of ballet training - kind of like Cecchetti, Vaganova, etc. and has specific work you need to learn for the exams before you can move into the next level (after passing your exam). I am in Vocational training, meaning it gives you the foundational training you need to audition and move into further ballet training and career. I am clearly much too old to do so, but I loved the challenge of really mastering the technique of ballet. I am 19, and I had the opportunity to take a ballet class thanks to my college partnering with the ballet company in my city. I've wanted to do ballet since I was little but never had the opportunity. I have no experience with any dance either; I'm a complete beginner!
I just started at the beginning of the semester and it is SO fun and SO hard. We move pretty fast because our instructor says we learn well, and also because it is a professional setting we are expected to learn more quickly. I am glad that it's through the college as well because we have quizzes about ballet history and terminology, which is really helpful in my opinion.

I'm a guy and I started ballet when I was 21/22 and made my way to dancing almost every day for a year, and I agree with everything you said here (including being in touch with the feminine). Also, all of the studios I went to were always very very welcoming to male dancers especially. It's seriously underrated for guys, both as an art form and as a means of exercise and getting in touch with your body.
In my first year I even was lucky enough to perform as the prince in The Nutcracker! I met pro dancers, old and young dancers just starting out, and developed friendships that will last a lifetime. And all just because I thought it would be fun and interesting and I liked the aesthetic of it.
I had to take a break for the past two years, but I am dying to go back. I miss all the feelings involved with every class.
Thanks for your video! It's never ever ever too late.

I just turned 24… And I’m really overweight. Ballet didn’t become a strong dream for me until a few years ago when I learned just how powerful their legs need to be to dance the way they do. 😅 I really wanted to be like that! Strong and lean! …but every article and video I’d found insisted that if you hadn’t started dance from the time you left the womb, it’s too late and you won’t get any good
I had no idea there were adults who started dance in their 20’s and 30’s and onward…. That really gives me hope, so thank you for speaking up. 😅

Loved this video. I did ballet for about 5 yrs as a kid, but never put the work in outside of class, so I never saw improvement. When we moved about 5 yrs ago I decided not to continue. I regret that decision so much and want to start ballet again, but I was a bit hesitant. Since I am 18 I felt like it was too late and I would never be able to get the flexibility for ballet, but your video has helped inspire me to try.

So you can learn faster if you put in the work! Hope this helped and glad you liked the video! Let me kno what you want to see next!❤️❤️

Gah! Thank you for sharing! I'm 27 and this is my third year in ballet. The closest I'd come to ballet before was basketball for 6 months in elementary school and then the coach moved sooooo... I actually never dreamed about ballet in my youth. It was kind of outside my realm of awareness. A friend, though, moved to the area my senior year of high school and she wore ballet tights to homecoming with her dress and she mentioned that her favorite form of dance was pointe.. As an adult, I needed exercise and my friend's mention had always kind of stuck with me. I began to do a little research and my eyes were opened to a whole new world. I started reaching out to ballet studios in the area and found one that would accept me as a normal ballet student. I take class with 11/12 year olds and it's such a blast. They all have so much personality and the classes are so challenging! I also have yet to get onto pointe, but I can feel my strength building and I can see my body physically changing before my eyes so I know I'm on my way! I can't imagine the strength yet to gain! Thanks, again for sharing! I'm going to go ahead and follow you on insta but incase you wanted to add me back, my name tag is beth_black22 [or 2.b.photography for my business's insta. I am so excited about my future journey. I know it will also be a long one to get on pointe too. I am not starting ballet, it is not that I am not interested, but I chose to start figure skating as soon as the pandemic is over. (I am 22 years old). So many interesting aesthetic sports out there, but I can't take too many things all at once! I want to be able to do jumps and all those cool tricks on ice, hopefully in two or three years. It's inspiring to see people start aesthetic sports in their adulthood. Gymnastics, ballet, figure skating, those sports are heavily associated with childhood. However, I am not giving up. This video was really inspiring. I hope your journey will always be smooth! We are on a similar but different path. Figure skating and ballet are similar in some ways, both very demanding and require years of hard work to be really good at it.
I will always root for you! Subscribed :) hope to see more of you in the future.
P.S: I started classic piano at 17. Felt really late to start it, but now I can play my favorite pieces. It feels VERY rewarding after a few years in.

Oh my gosh I love seeing these kinds of videos. It's never too late to find something you love - and hearing you say that you don't think you're very good, but still love it is an important mindset that I think our society has left behind. (i.e. if you can't do something well/profit from it, then it's a waste of time) [also there's lowkey a stigma that dancers, specifically ballerinas are really pretentious, so I'm glad you mentioned the community you have with your studio!] xx

I really really loved this video. Its so well constructed and interesting, adored how you talked about self talk, feminine energy and being connected with one’s body instead of being stuck in the notion of performance. I stumbled upon this video after having searched for figure skating content since like you I chose to finally sign up for my dream sport at 20, I started taking beginning adult ballet classes as a supplement to FS, and wow? I never knew how fun and lighthearted ballet could be? It was always pictured as a kind of torture sport where everything seemed to hurt etc. I agree with you on the cute outfits, aaaahhh seriously my inner child is always so pleased with wearing baby pink during ballet practice 😭
I’m glad more adults have decided to please their inner child and do what their soul wants to do instead of feeling sorry of the ‘what ifs’ of the past, your video is a step towards helping those people so thank you! 🤍
PS: If you’re reading this, whoever you are, you are NOT a leftover of wasted potential of what sport or hobby you could’ve practiced as a child. As a woman it’s so important to value yourself and your capabilities at whatever age you are. It’s okay to start now rather than never.

SAME!!! I'm 27 and I've always loved ballet but because I wasn't a dancer as a kid, had noodle arms and legs lol, and didn't do gymnastics I figured it wasn't my thing and I was never meant to do it. My mom tried to put me in a class at 2 years old but I was so shy, my first day I ran out, then I tried it again when I was 8 along with gymnastics and tap all in one class because of movies like the Barbie and the Nutcracker and Broadway musicals like Annie or Cinderella. It wasn't just ballet, I wanted to dance. But my teacher who taught the classes at the rec center ran away with her boyfriend with all the money donated for the performance on the night of the recital and I was forced to give it up because my parents didn't have the money to send me to a new class after that. I watched dance movies like Step-Up, Dirty Dancing 1 and 2, etc. all through my teenage years(and still do haha) it inspired me enough to take ballroom dance lessons after I graduated high school, and then I finally started ballet from home when I tapped into that love of dance again and had the confidence to actually stick to it. I love this video and I just felt a personal connection to your story so much. Love it and I wish you luck and blessings on the rest of your amazing journey.

Whoa, so im a male ballet dancer here. Started when I was 8 and I’m almost 19 now. I actually quit last year for a year and joined back in April, and I never was the most flexible and most technically good, but I was solid and reliable. Before I quit my work ethic was meh, but I still managed to be solid at the age of 17. If I push myself really hard now, I could be top class in my company again. Due to a lack of men and my age, I had to perform Sugar Plum Cavalier on stage for my company haha, but it was really fun. So if any of you wanna jump into it, but you’re scared, don’t be. It’ll make you a better person and it will give you a better image of yourself :)

Hi! Lemme say, I love your channel name. I started ballet from scratch about a year ago at 20 with a similar journey of doing yoga for several years beforehand. I took a class through my college which met twice a week. I was working with dancers who had a lot more experience than me, and I learned so much from being the worst one in the class. I'd even recommend finding a teacher who will allow you into a slightly more advanced class because, in my experience, it gets you to work harder and you may learn tips from observing the more experienced ballerinas.
Tried online classes during the pandemic; gave myself too many injuries, so I am working on strength training. I highly recommend learning more about anatomy to work your flexibility and strength more effectively. I thought I would never achieve middle splits, but with better understanding of hip anatomy I am almost there!
Best of luck on your ballet and youtube journey. This video made me smile!

Congrats for starting! I started in my early 30s. It was so good for me and the hardest thing that I ever did! But my posture improved, my legs and butt became sculpted and I got to perform in recitals. I didn't want to wear tights and a leotard at first, because I thought that those were for "real" dancers. But I was told that it's important for beginners even more than pros, because the teacher needs to see your body alignment, so that you don't injure yourself, which made a lot of sense when I thought about it. I developed a disability in my 40s, but I still went to dance. I am now in my 50s and still taking ballet. It's been very good for me. It has also helped with my body issues. I used to wear baggy clothes to hide myself.
I highly suggest that whatever age you're at, if you want to dance you should. You don't want to look back at your life with regrets.
    Thanks for posting this!

I'm currently 15 and ballet has always been a dream of mine (Since the time I saw barbie and the swan lake when I was 4) and I'm finally being honest with myself caring less of what people think of me (I'm the "quiet kid") and more of what I want! Problem is I've been moving around since the day I was born and not in locations with dance schools and since I'll be moving to a boarding school I think it will be impossible then too at least for the following three years. AFter that I'll probably move into a big city for a degree and might be able to then (If I get a part-time job). That's all the hope I have right now but I just wanted to share. If you're wondering whether to start or not, go for it. You'll soon figure out if it's something for you and even if it wasn't, at least you won't regret not having tried. Good luck!

Well, I'm 21 this year I'm starting with pointe, I've been dancing for 3 years, with a good trainig, I mean, dancing almost everyday going to the gym and looking for any oportunnity to dance more and more.
I do realize that the difference between ages it's tuff but maybe finding people that have the same issues and finding also a taches can work very nice for every person that's struggling with finding a ballet class for her age. Remember you can start late and still succed.

My family couldn’t afford ballet, but it was always what I wanted to do since I was a kid. I use to wear tutus year round as a kid thinking I was a ballerina. There are pictures of me wearing one in the snow with a coat because my family couldn’t get me to wear real winter clothes, hahah. I saved any magazine picture with the “ballet aesthetic.” I took a class at 19 I’m college for a PE class (yes, my university made us take some class like this, but I got to take ballet). I had so much fun, but always thought adult ballet wasn’t a thing so I stopped. I’m 31 now and took a virtual freebie class with the Atlanta Ballet this morning and had so much fun! I’m going to keep going and doing things online too. Also thank you for this video and also for making a note about the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine. Totally on the same page!

I danced as a small child and my grandparents were told “we’ve taken X as far as we can”, which seems like a nice way to say I was crap. I started again in the summer as a 32-33 year old and I’m not crap at all. I dance 4-5 times a week and love it and thoroughly recommend it. I’m dancing virtually over zoom as there’s no options for adults in my area and we’re all still in a lockdown anyway, but I’m happy to stay virtual and I’m converting my spare room into a studio space.

I don't know why this just now showed up in my UA-cam recommended but I'm super happy for you! I started at 7 and went all the way until I was 16 (I was also inspired by Barbie). However, I then had a somewhat similar experience to you where my parents couldn't afford it and had to stop. I was super devastated and never thought I'd be able to return because I'm too old. But recently I found a studio near me that takes adult beginners. (I'm not really a beginner but I lost a lot of my skills) I'm almost 25 so I'm kinda iffy on it but I think I might try again :)

Thank you for sharing & for the encouragement :) I’m 25 and I did some ballet in high school.... not at a professional company or anything, just some basic ballet & dance classes in place of P.E. at my school. (We had diff dance units so we would do 3 weeks of ballet, 3 weeks of jazz, etc.) I absolutely loved it.
In college I took 2 musical theater dance classes, but then I switched majors & left dance behind. :/ I really miss it & have been wanting to get back into ballet. Sadly there aren’t any adult ballet classes offered near where I live.... so idk what I’m gonna do, but I would really like to start learning again.

A little advice for all the broke guys like me out there!!!:
I am in ballet since I was 5/6yo, it's ten years now,but I was in studio only for 7/8 years long because ballet is really expensive so when I was 11/12yo I left. When I tell you that this was my most heartbreaking decision, it's no joke. I kept having nightmares about dance (me not be able to use my legs anymore and rejecting my decision, me in a burning studio,me at 40 years old crying at work because it's not what I wanted to do etcetera), I cried every night, abandoned every activity I was doing, rejecting any kind of replacement. Then I understood that living without dance couldn't be an option. So I started hip hop and modern. I felt better but it was not the same and c0vid ended up with taking this away too. So I got it: nothing could ever replace ballet. And I started again. But not in class. At home. It's really to expensive for my family and i have to accept that I'm never going to be a professional ballerina. But I'm never going to stop dancing. Now I have 10 years of dance experience so I dance by myself but if you're a beginner I really discourage to dance by yourselves. I still suggest to do simple exercises because in the end it doesn't matter what you do, what burns your heart is ballet, from the biggest to the smallest movements you can do. When I will feel confident enough I'm going on pointe again but guys if you have poor experience I REALLY suggest to avoid dangerous movements. When I will be an adult I'll definitely take ballet classes because I can't separate from this form of art, I am born with dance in my heart and I really can't help it. If you can't afford ballet, don't feel sad, one day you are going to dance if you really want to and you even have the possibility to dance at home. Sorry for the bad English but I'm italian. Love u all little swans🤍🤍

-Like most adult ballet dancers have said it's never too late to start ballet. It never crossed my mind that once you're x age it's too late. Perhaps at a certain age it's more of too late to become a professional. What I say is people take up football, soccer and other hobbies but not every hobby/person wants to be a professional at it...same goes with ballet
-I think everyone if they wish to do ballet should do it. You may not be good at it but at the very least ballet makes you aware of posture, can be an intense workout, keep you limber/flexible (vs stiff), keep muscles strong, relieve stress and more. Besides having stop growing as an adult, a pro to taking ballet as an adult is there no pressure on you except the one you put on yourself. Taking ballet as a kid/teen there's a bit more pressure I find both internally and externally.
-Personally, if a class doesn't have a consistent/regular instructor it's a no for me. My reasoning is a permanent teacher will over time get to know me;my strengths and weaknesses . This in turn gives them the ability/knowledge to aid and push me to improve. Another factor I'm choosy about is the space. I prefer a studio space as it is made for dance and also puts me in the dance mentally. I understand some recreational classes dont have the ability to be in a studio and I have nothing against taking one in a non-studio. I prefer a dance space as it puts me mentally ready. For one if I have to do things on a wood or non-dance floor I'm more hesitant to do the moves full out as my fear of slipping and falling keeps distracting me. Also wall of mirror (and barre for ballet) I need as that's the spot to check alignment and form
-Ballet and dance in general to me, requires more mentally than physically. That is more goes on within my mind(thinking) than me preforming the moves. It's a mental and physical workout. I find from having done ballet, coordination of several body parts is better than those who have no dance experience. Meaning I can move my arms and legs at the same time(coordinate) without thinking too much about it...For instance in a mixed class, the ones with no experience tend to think only on one body part(legs or arms) and forget the other body part that suppose to move at the same time.
-If you're curious to my dance history...not a professional but have done it for enough years (7-8ish yrs). I dont want to say "long time" as compared to others I feel i took average amount...though I could be wrong. I started with ballet "late" at 9 at a small studio and was with them for 2 years before unfortunately they were forced to close. I took another year of ballet at another small studio before my family moved. The year we moved I took a year off dance as I needed to find another studio as well as adjust to the new environment. The next year I found a studio and was taking ballet as well as jazz/modern class. Taking up dance after a year off was a hard adjustment. I had to remind my body of moves I knew how to do and it was frustrating that I wasn't able to preform as well. But once muscle memory kicked in it was a bit easier. Bringing up the studio point I mentioned previously, the old studios I went to I realize were more relaxed than the new one, as I had a lot of bad habits that weren't corrected. Can't hate that teacher though as she had many students in a small dance space. Also found it a bit hard to break ballet rules when in my other dance. For instance not being so pulled up and turning out. Back to the current studio which is where I did my final four years of ballet, jazz, modern. I decided to quit dance despite the ability to take it for a year more before university for a several reasons. I could elaborate but it would cause this comment to be longer than it is right now. My final year of dance I did get approval to start pointe work which sometimes I think to myself I should of just stuck it out for a year more as I really wanted to try pointe work but then the some of the reason for me quitting come to mind. I went to a university that offered ballet and modern that fulfilled an half an art credit each. Naturally I took both for credit and stress relief. Dancing again after a break brought back many feelings like joy, it's a bit hard to describe if one hasn't experience it. I guess the phrase "feels like home" sort of explains it. I haven't had a proper ballet or dance class in years and I miss it. Dance as an adult without those pressures as a child/teen really allowed me to enjoy the moment. I hope in the future to take up ballet again and try pointe work. My only connection to ballet is I still do certain ballet strengthening exercises to keep strong such as ones for my ankles and feet and stretching.
---Apologies to your eyes, I hope they're not too tired from reading this essay of a comment. I believe you'll be able to do pointe in the future. The question of when all really depends on how much effort in and out of class as there is no set number of years before pointe work. I had 7 years before approval while my friend took 13 years of classes. You're body stop developing so now it's all about how strong every body part is that will determine. A bit of foot flexibility does play a role but strength I feel is primary. I mean you're balancing the body on your toes so strength required. I say whole body as; core is what holds you up, feet are what pushes you up to toe, legs are attached to feet so they need to support...basically our parts are all connected, having one off or weak can be a domino effect. Best way to improve is practicing aka stretching/strengthening exercises everyday. I think this was one factor to why i was able to advance and get better faster than my friend...practice makes perfect right?
-The sickling of your foot could be weak ankles as your not pushing and maintaining your weight over the foot...or your center is not where it should be and your not pulled up. For tendu you need to use the floor more; think of pushing the floor as in pushing down through the ground instead of pushing to the side. Ballet is thinking about lengthening and expanding, torso up(upper body) is pulling towards the ceiling while legs (lower half) are pushing through the floor.
....there are a lot of ballet videos out there but if you like I can give more info/tips/exercise recommendation. Again I was never a professional but I'll try my best to help. Again sorry for long read...it's the reason I'm stopping here though I could converse more haha.

It means a lot to me that you took the time out of your day to watch and leave me this comment 💛I’ve only taken like 10 classes of ballet at this point but you are so right that as an adult there isn’t a pressure that you get as child dancer. I think I should go more often (eventually) to put pressure on myself so I can get better and stronger. I am in awe of all and any ballet dancer. Thank you for sharing your story. Also thanks for your advice! Ballet really is more mental I have also found but I love to learn about something that is more creative as an adult. Thanks again for your beautifully encouraging comment 💛🩰
