It’s because when we need the help everyone’s looking around like we’re on Mars, then when we’ve managed that bit out ourselves and don’t need the help anymore, then everyone and aunt Cathy wants to huddle in the kitchen doing pedestrian donuts for absolutely no reason😂😂😂 😂😂then by that point we’re just frustrated as hell and want everyone out of the kitchen. Ya’ll can get a drink at midnight when thanksgiving is over and the kitchen is closed and I’m not in it anymore😂 I’m kidding!

Thanksgiving 2020 I cooked my first solo thanksgiving.
The kids cleaned up.
The next day my daughter stated she threw out all the dark meat because she “didn’t think anyone would want it”.
I burst into actual tears.

Sometimes if you try to help out, you just become the unfortunate scapegoat for all their pent up yelling, anger, and holiday frustration. Especially if you ask for some help or direction- they usually have a lot of hot emotions running through them at the moment, but that’s no excuse to make their kid feel like the dumbest idiot alive just because they can’t read their minds.They might thank you for helping out later and make you an ‘example’ for the rest of the siblings (aka ‘why can’t you guys be more like him/her), or maybe treat you out a little, but the chances of them apologising for their earlier behaviour are low to nonexistent. If a parent can handle some well-meaning but clueless assistance while stressed without blowing up at them, then sure.
I love my mum, and both my parents, but our mutual anger issues make trying to do the right thing like playing Russian roulette over a field full of land mines. It’s an uncomfortable place to be in, and most of the time I’d rather hunker down in my room, stay completely out of her way, and deal with her passive-aggressive comments later. I’m already perma-charged with doing the dishes. She could limit her stress by making it a potluck, or keeping it small and not invite anyone the way we’re doing this year for Covid. But she’s the one who loves parties and hosting, she’s the one who loves cooking complicated dishes, and she’s the one who loves impressing her friends and our extended visiting family with formal artisan table settings and elaborate centrepieces. She can deal by hiring some temp help for those days.

My mom and I reference this video at every family holiday. My grandparents look at us like we are crazy.
Tip: just prep thanksgiving over 2 days. Day 1, everything you can reheat. Day 2, geryhring which is best served fresh, mainly any meats (for me it’s salmon b/c pescatarian) Then once all your things are cooking on day 2, you can take half an hour to reheat all the stuff in day one. Also, crockpots are your friend :)
