  • If you watched the First Rise of Nickelodeon video about the networks first show, Pinwheel, you know that I touched briefly on some of the animated shorts from independent animators. These were the first steps in what would eventually become a staple of the Network. The first Cartoons that aired on Pinwheel were foreign-made cartoons that were dubbed over in english, a lot of them were from the 1950's and 1960's and were cartoons that were related to old folk tales.
Many of these animations today are obscure and poorly made they're also notorious for being kinda creepy. For its first years, Nickelodeon continued to play foreign-made cartoons in a similar fashion as part of two anthology series called First Row Features and Special Delivery. In 1980, the channel aired its first original series that was not live-action: Video Comic Book. It could best be described as a "motion comic" that consisted of illustrated scenes with animated elements, like speech bubbles and moving backgrounds.
Nickelodeon's first attempt at a fully-animated show occurred later in 1980, when Geraldine Laybourne produced test pilots for Video Dream Theatre. It holds the title of Nickelodeon's first true cartoon. However, it was left unaired when test audiences did not give the reactions Laybourne wanted. Throughout the 1980s, the amount of acquired animated shows increased on Nickelodeon, with reruns of cartoons such as Bananaman, Danger Mouse, The Little Prince, and The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Blocks dedicated to animated programming like Looney Tunes on Nickelodeon ran from the mid-1980s well into the late 1990s.
Profits from Nickelodeon's expanding audience at the time helped it fund its own original cartoons. This started what's known today as the"Nicktoons".

Why does every video you make make me wanna cry? Lol.
Probably because nostalgia is such a profound thing and a lot of these shows had such a deeper meaning than what we first understood them as when we were kids. Ugg. 😭💓

I like Spongebob but it's sad that Nick put all its resources into Spongebob which caused other cartoons to end

You can thank Cyma Zarghami for that. She never gave a shit about Nicktoons and was just willing to let every Nicktoon that was made at her time as president that WASN’T SpongeBob and (eventually) Loud House to rot. Luckily, she’s gone. Brian Robbins (who you may know as the co-creator of All That) has been the president of Nickelodeon for over 2 years now, and he’s said himself that he’s going to make the entirety of Nickelodeon 100% creative driven. And that’s JUST what he’s been doing. With great new shows like Lego City Adventures, The Casagrandes, The Adventures of Paddington, It’s Pony, The Crystal Maze, Ollie’s Pack, Santiago of the Seas, Unleashed and (more recently) The Astronauts, and great reboot and revival series like All That, Bubble Guppies, Are You Afraid of the Dark? (the miniseries) and Blue’s Clues & You!, all created under Brian Robbins watch as president of Nickelodeon. Hell, there’s PLENTY of upcoming content coming from Nickelodeon that’s worth looking forward to. Adventures in Wonder Park, the Rugrats revival, Meet the Voxels, Star Trek: Prodigy (which will be animated), a new animated Garfield series, Man of the House (developed by Norman Lear) and Counting Stars (which will be a live action musical series), among many other upcoming series. So I can safely say that Nickelodeon is in great hands with a wonderful future ahead of us.

Still mad Nick sold Doug to Disney

If only Disney would give the rights of Doug back to Nickelodeon so Jim Jinkins can make the revival. Sadly, because Disney can be so fucking incompetent and greedy sometimes, they’ve refused to give up the rights yet they don’t want to do ANYTHING new with the series! WTF is the point of keeping the rights of something to yourself if you’re not going to do ANYTHING new with it?! It pisses me the hell off!

Nice man, however, I'm surprised you didn't talk about what NickToons is like today that would've been interesting but sadly that didn't happen but that's still okay I'm glad you still talked about what NickToons was originally and that's just awesome to see someone else talk about one of my favorite channels from my childhood (even though I didn't have cable to this channel as a kid but rather watched it at friends houses).

I associate the rise of Sponge Bob as the beginning of the downfall of Nickelodeon. It just became loud and obnoxious and sold out big time with all the merchandising from there.

Lot of people associate that with the fall of Nickelodeon. At least people who grew up in actual remember watching the original nicktoons.

Rugrats was the most popular show on Nick.
