  • Magewell's USB Capture 4K HDMI Plus has a crazy name, but pretty flexible feature set that I think would work well for a lot of people wanting to pass through 4k60 signals and capture and stream, without having the highest-tier hardware.

    The whole issue of your console outputting 4k and setting the magewell to record 1080p60 and re-upscale it back to 4k in OBS really interests me because a side-by-side comparison of the upscaled 4k v actual 4k would be great to see - hint-hint.

    Just bought one of these thanks to you buddy! I think there needs to be more devices like this, so there will be more competition, and possibly less pricey.

    Just want to say that as someone that uses this capture card. 1440p 60fps records fine. even when using a custom EDID to pull in a 1440p 120hz signal.

      Hi. I am looking into a capture card to either record:
      3440 x 1440 @100hz
      Or
      2k 144hz
      Can this card record/stream at 3440 x1440 or 2k without trouble? Most other external cards can only do 1080p/60

    I understand you touched briefly on this, but I'm still not 100% clear: if I sent a 4K60 signal at this guy, would I be able to then bump that through OBS studio and stream it live to YT at 4K30? Disclosure: I'm a complete noob to streaming but wish to start a weekly live stream on my YT channel (which is all in 4K, hence this question), Cheers mate!

    The EDID customization is really cool.
    Does it have a EDID wizard so I can create a fake HDMI output that has lets say 1920x1080 and 60 Hz and that also supports 720p 60Hz and 30Hz, and rest just some standard stuff. I.e. I want to be able to connect some devices like Raspberry Pi or a console, without needing to connect external monitor, and just do video capture directly to computer, but lets still allow a connected device to properly setup output resolution.

    SInce Avermedia nor Elgato don't support 1440p60 ->1080p60 i guess my only option is USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus but damn it's expensive. What about USB Capture HDMI Plus? Since you state 4K version can do what i want, i guess the regular non-4K can do to since it can pass 4K60. Also, it's 100 bucks cheaper but still quite expensive.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  6 років тому

      I wouldn't assume that. Most 1080p60-focused capture cards cannot take >1080p signals. The only way would be to force the clone in Windows which would get questionable results and possibly cause other problems.

    FPGA Chips are no joke. Since it an FPGA, does this mean you can overwrite the existing firmware with a custom one?

    I can see this USB capture card very useful for Laptop streaming, specially with the downscaling inside of it, but for the desktop, specially dual PC streaming, the ElGato 4k60 seems like a better option, price and performance wise.

    Nice to see Linux supported, and tested. It will work with any recent Linux without any drivers.
    For Elgato HD 60, nothing is said. It might or might not work. (I know CAM LINK works, but Elgato doesn't say it works, and they do not test it. Screw them).

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  6 років тому

      The only Elgato that will work properly on Linux is the Cam Link.

    • @movax20h
      @movax20h 5 років тому

      Yep. I contacted Elgato, and they confirmed this.
      But, somebody took firmware from mac driver, and wrote a driver for Linux in user space (so not even a kernel driver, which would be needed for PCIe devices probably or for high resolution models that require) for HD: (no HD 60 yet)
      github.com/tolga9009/elgato-gchd/blob/master/README.md
      obsproject.com/forum/resources/streaming-on-linux-using-elgato-game-capture-hd-and-obs-studio.294/
      But it is not supported, not maintained really well either, and no work on it right now to fix or add any new hardware. Great work by the author, but only useful if somebody made a mistake of buying GCHD in the first place.

    I guess the software is insane expensive that comes with it.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  6 років тому +1

      The software is an afterthought. These high/end cards are always that expensive - the onboard FPGA chips are what costs money - chips the slightly cheaper 4k60 doesn't have

    • @llothar68
      @llothar68 6 років тому

      No it's the 4k in the title that costs money. If it isn't even encoding it can be made cheap.

    • @janiss2926
      @janiss2926 6 років тому

      such ignorance in the comments ... this card's pci express competition costs close to and over 1k! (elgato cannot do RGB colors so id say its way overpriced, only pro cards can and they cost way more than this) EDIT: the 4k60 RGB capable "Magewell Pro Capture HDMI 4K Plus" ... is around 1k ... and there are more expensive and arguably better solutions from Datapath and Deltacast, if you are ok to sacrifice color compression there are other cards closer to this pricepoint...

    Hey I may just be a total idiot, but I just set up this card with my PlayStation for the first time and the screen was just flash from black to green, to a “no signal” but it was the same hdmi cable that I use from PS to tv and have no problems.

    @EposVox, random advice request here....I'm looking for a 4K capable device that can live record the display on a 4K monitor. For context, this is needed to record a unique visualization program that's running during a live heart surgery. Questions I can't yet answer - type of monitor, operating system, and whether or not it will have HDMI. Assuming for now that it's windows or mac, and assuming it has HDMI out, could the Magewell reliably record the 4K monitor's display for up to 4 hours?

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  5 років тому

      Yes. This would be one of the better options for that, given that it has active cooling. Though keep in mind the final image is 1080p downscaled from the 4K. For full 4K capture, you'd need an internal card, sadly.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  5 років тому

      Also worth keeping in mind that this kind of capture card needs a computer to use to record the feed. If you need it to operate independently, the only options you're looking at are the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus (also downscales to 1080p, but records internally to a MicroSD card and takes USB power) or something from Atomos Ninja line (can record full 4K, runs on Sony NPF batteries, records to SSDs)

    • @logankaneprod
      @logankaneprod 5 років тому

      @@EposVox Thank you for the quick reply! Been discussing it with our tech team and seems the Ninja is our best bet. Still need to find out from the hospital what specs they're working with, but if the monitor has an HDMI, we should be covered with the Atomos Ninja. Just need to get the SSDs as well. Thanks again

Also the image quality over usb its not that good as the original source.Do you think getting a magewell plus could help me? I have a I7 6th generation quad core and NVIDIA 4 Giga and 8Giga of ram.

  • @themoungatalia1412

    So I'm looking for a cap card that will catch my 1440p 165hz (can be lowered to 144hz) signal to my streaming pc and take that signal and downscale it to 1080p 60fps or 720p 60fps and output that to twitch. But I cannot sacrifice my gaming monitor refresh rate and lower it to 60 fps. So will this cap and downscale a 1440p signal? If not anything besides elgato that can??

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  6 років тому

      This will downscale the 1440p signal, but for 144hz (165 out of the question) it may not work. The Elgato is your best bet.
