  • Experimenting in mixed media art is essential to developing your own artistic style and voice.
    This week, I am experimenting with using the Suminagashi technique of pulling prints from ink and water. I have never done this before and only watched one video using this mixed media technique before I filmed.
    In typical “Jackie-style,” you’ll experience the whole gamut of reactions as if you were sitting in the studio with me.
    It is my hope that, as a mixed media artist, this video encourages you to spend time experimenting with new techniques.

    Every creative person has different needs. Here are the different ways to enjoy these videos.
    - Some enjoy hearing me explain my process. If that’s you, make sure your volume is on.

    - Some don’t want to hear my voice at all (that’s ok 😀). If that’s you, turn the volume off and watch.

    I play with Suminagashi in my studio. I first experimented at Art Camp teaching 8 to 11 year olds. I did some research and bought Carrageenan on Amazon and we used paints at camp which didn't work as well as only but kids had a great time. Water st as yes pretty clean as paints didn't sink. I have red two gallons of the carrageenan water I reuse all the time. Love your videos

      Thank you, Heather - I bet the kids had a blast! So you can reuse the carrageenan water? And what proportion of C to water do you mix? I'd love to try it.

    Lovely to see you experimenting with this. I came across it when I lived in Japan in the late 1990s and I too had a lot of fun trying different techniques with the sumi and mixing in other inks, mostly using thin Japanese papers. I think khadi paper would probably work well. Sadly I think I only have a couple of pieces tucked away in a box somewhere. You've inspired me to give it another go - if I can find space for and cope with all the wet paper! Thanks for sharing!

    • @PaintedPaperStudio
      @PaintedPaperStudio  4 місяці тому

      You're right Diana, dealing with the wet paper issue takes some planning. I think in the future I may do it outside where I can lay down a large tarp and let them dry right there. I had never heard of Khadi paper, so I just went down a delightful rabbit hole learning about it. On one of the sites I saw a khadi paper sketchbook that made me swoon 🥰

About a year ago I watched a suminagashi master create something gorgeous and I thought, "... someday I might try that...", but of course I never did because it looked too technical or complicated or intimidating.
