- This is the ending scene of the 1976 movie All the President's Men which tells the story of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein who investigate the Watergate burglary and the massive cover-up which followed. President Richard Nixon would eventually resign.

Who would have thought a close shot of a typewriter could be one of the greatest freaking movie endings of all time
It's a TELEX MACHINE.
It is. The general point is spot-on.
It was the only way they could tell everything that happen without another 2-hour movie.
What a thing to live through. We were all riveted to the TV. Chilling. Absolutely chilling.

I was sitting in a Chinese restaurant, in Amsterdam, with two young ladies from Germany that day. The table across from me, the patrons (who were also Americans) heard me speaking and called over: "You're from the states?" I said yeah. They held up a newspaper to show me the headlines. And there were just two words, in the thickest, largest, blackest newspaper font I have ever seen. It simply read:
NIXON RESIGNS
Imagine how would it be now. You know the news the moment it's made public on your phone.
The teletype ending is utterly brilliant.. I've seen this movie a dozen times, and I always utter the same thing at the end... "Un-***king believable"..
And it is unbelievable that events could snowball to that degree.. The story's arc is perfect, as well, taking us to the disclosure of Haldeman being the architect of the whole mess, and then the teletype tells the rest.. Whoever came up with that idea is a genius.. One of the very best thriller's of all time (even though we all know the story beforehand.. that's quite an achievement)..
Actually Watergate was set in motion in 1971 with the leak of the Pentagon papers.
Hard to believe it lost the Oscar for Best Picture to "Rocky"

It’s like his typewriter is a machine gun, waging war with the corrupt. However, the pen is truly mightier than the sword.
What an utterly brilliant scene. The shot of the inauguration with Woodstyn typing the presidents doom into their typewriters. Then the end of the story told through the Telex.
One of the best ending scenes in movie history. Very memorable. The most visually memorable ending scene in movie history.
It is interesting how this movie ended with Woodward and Bernstein at the lowest point of the Watergate investigations, especially when it was well-known how their investigation changed journalism. There must have been more than a few moviegoers in 1976 who exclaimed "That's it?" when the credits rolled.
It got messy after that.. The Saturday night massacre, Nixon becoming morose and unpredictable.. At heart, it’s a movie about journalism, and they ended it at the point they got inside the Oval Office, which I think was perfect..
I saw this movie back then and didn't understand much of it then; must watch it again. Watched the newer version with Liam Neeson as Mark Felt
I saw it for the first time today, a journalist ending for a journalist movie. Fitting it ended with "President Nixon resigns" that was the endgame for them. There was no going back after the first headline hit and there was no other way it could've ended. Beautifully made.

I don't think their investigations changed journalism. It changed politics. The Republicans have been mad ever since and run years long investigations into Democratic Presidents just trying to find anything (like lying about cheating on your wife). When they can't find anything, they just make it up (see Biden "Crime" Family moniker when there is no such thing).
This is one movie that I will watch over and over. Script, direction and acting all top notch. Robards won Oscar for Bradlee portrayal. A fascinating fact was that Redford and Hoffman memorized both parts, so they could finish each others' sentences and thoughts. I still feel a chill when Holbrook, playing Deep Throat, whispers, " Your lives are in danger. " Brilliant drama of the downfall of Nixon.
Masterpiece.
The typewriter shots have stayed with me all this time.
That's the perfect series of scenes of reporters following a story to the end even though nobody wants to read it or gives a shit. But it's there and the story has to be told.
The movie ends half way through the story. The final days picks it up from April of 1973 through the resignation.
I nearly have to cry when I see them going through the card catalogs in the library ("I don't know if you want them, but I got them"--dude with the fro). Just soooo sadly funny, compared to today. GOD! And YOU know, if Trump gets in, the biggest All The President's Men is just waiting to happen!!!

That scene was accurate in that Woodward and Bernstein told him the depth of the Watergate cover-up at night on his front lawn, but what Bradlee actually said in response is more haunting than what was said in the movie. The real Bradlee simply said, "What the hell do we do now?"

@@beckr11 Hail to the Chief it’s plated every inauguration when the president arrives and then when the president takes you with of Office. The fafarw immediately before is called 4 Ruffles and flourishes, then Hail to the Chief with a 21-gun salute.

This is probably an odd statement but, from a purely dramatic viewpoint, it's good that these events took place when they did. The final bits involving the teletype really make everything work better than I suspect they would as words appearing on a contemporary computer screen.
Five years later, I couldn't agree more.
The movie starts with eighteen seconds of nothing but an out-of-focus page and then, just as the audience thinks there's something wrong with the projector, the first typed letter crashes down on the page like a gunshot. It's a great dramatic device.

Saw this at the Paramount in Austin a few nights ago with a friend, and what a great film.. I loved his reaction, seeing it for the first time, having been born after watergate, cause he was thrilled with the context of why there was a cover up, and that it wasn't just a singular event.. Great film..

My favorite little detail about this scene is how the sound of the cannons firing continues even after the teletype starts doing its thing. "Shots fired" indeed.
You can say all you like about your smartphone or email, nothing made everyone "stand up and look" like the bell ringing and the sound of the teletype in the room beginning to chatter :D
Such a chilling way to end the movie! As the viewer, you practically stop breathing as each typed line rattles across the screen.
Now in 2019 we might just have a sequel...

It certainly changes watching this, to see a corrupt President brought down and know that decades after, an even worse President escaped consequences for his even more blatant corruption.

The day Ford took office my dad my brother and me were driving to DC for a weeks vacation and dads two week naval reserve duty my brother was 17 I was 19 and we had never seen people dancing in the streets . What a memory.
Coverup of watergate was trivial in context of history. Every president of every country in history of planet earth covers up something

Underappreciated maybe, but not underrated. He's got the acting Triple Crown (won an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Award).
I remember the days when journalists had a moral duty to present the facts, not to weaponize their own opinions. Back then, credibility was earned. There was no internet, no cell phones, no instant mass-marketing tools. You HAD to think about what you were doing. Hearsay and accusations were only as good as the proof that came with them. Nowadays... Hearsay and accusations are all you need, because everyone usually believes the first thing they hear.
That's true-- if someone happens upon Jesse Watters of FOX claiming that Biden is corrupt, they'll believe it; if they come upon Rachel Maddow at MSNBC claiming that Trump is corrupt, they might equally believe it.
Journalistic and broadcast standards used to be enforced laws now they imprison or exile people for telling the truth.
We've always had press that covers for high-ranking people: the Kennedys' affairs, Franklin Roosevelt's paralysis, etc. These days it's wide open, and people still don't know what to believe.
It's a great film. Well made. Great story and I've enjoyed this film for many years. Now in 2023 that the whole truth is known the relevance of this story is greatly diminished. Consequently, the film does not have the mystery or mystique it once had for me but I still enjoy the story telling. The break-in that triggered this event was a minor occurrence in a larger scheme of deception and manipulation concocted by narrow and limited men. The ants that annoyed the lion so much the lion had to move.

Not to get overly film school-y but isn’t it cool, the “war” between the TV and the typewriters at the end there? Big, slow cannon-like and thunderous rifle fire sounds from the Nixon TV. Smaller, more rapid machine gun-sounds from the typewriters that chip away at the Nixon regime. Either that’s a great microcosm of the whole movie or I gotta lay off the peyote..

Since asking, I've learned that the name of the music may be something called Inaugural Fanfare, but there's more than a few "fanfares" existing which are written by different composers for elected officials going into office. In any case, I find the music very inspiring. Again, thanks.

Sort of. It appears to have been a brokered deal. Gerald Ford became the VP knowing that Nixon would likely be impeached or resign. Ford was the house minority leader. It should have been the speaker of the house that became VP.

+KingDT2007 Hi. According to Wikipedia, Nancy Marchand didn't appear in the movie as Katherine Graham. She did, however, appear in the tv series, Lou Grant, where she played, from 1977-82, Margaret Pynchon, in 99 episodes. This role was likened to the real Katherine Graham
They couldn't show her 'tits in a ringer' - this is a family movie. (Note: that paraphrase of Bradlee's line was based on a threat to Katie Graham and free speech made by Republican Attorney-General Mitchell.)
The producers decided that her presence in the film was unnecessary and would have been a diversion from the story. And I agree.
She initially agreed to sanction the film, on the agreement that she wouldn't be a character in the movie. After seeing it, she said she'd made a mistake, not allowing herself to be a character in the movie.
Remember it well. In 1972 (the last year of the draft) my number going into 1973 was...3. When they ended the draft I was so relieved and thankful for what Nixon had done. When Watergate unraveled I saw Nixon for the despicable liar, cheat, and criminal he was. A few years ago I discovered that he had secretly negotiated with the North to hold off on peace talks with Johnson until after the election in 1968, so he could take credit for ending the war. What a piece of slime, and until Trump, the worst stain on the Office. At least HE was held accountable.

I was forced to take typing in high school. As an elective course. I thought it was the most useless course I would ever take. I am glad I did. Because when computers came out I was up to speed
Robert Redford is actually quite good touch typing. He had to LEARN to type "2 finger" style for the movie. Bernstein was a touch typist, but Bob Woodward could only type 2 fingers. Never learned touch typing. Prior to computers, only secretarys were taught touch typing.
High school courses were gendered: boys took shop. Girls took a home ev and typing.
Up through the 1970s there were three levels of typing, short hand, dictation, business machines (mechanical adding machines). Because clerical positions paid poorly and had little advancement, they became women’s jobs when women were expected to marry and then stay home to raise families.
Spelling, grammar, punctuation were taught very strictly, with strict adherence to “standard” usage, as the secretary work could not be machine-checked for errors, etc.
Pre-WWI a lot of clerical jobs (book keeping, etc) were men’s jobs.

I had to take typing in high school (1981) I thought it was the biggest waste of time and that I would never use it. Little did i know that 10 years later there would be computers and I was already trained to type. A skill i used to laugh at turned out to be a huge asset. A good lesson in humility.

"Before he enters the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:-"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." "
(Article 2, Section 1, Clause 8)
While it may have been used earlier, the earliest inauguration with contemporaneous evidence of its use was Lincoln's second in 1865, (and that is contradicted by other evidence). For uncontested contemporaneous evidence of use you have to wait for Arthur in 1881, while we know that Hoover didn't use it in 1929, (simply saying "I do" in the question and response version of the oath).
What's more, the US Constitution also allows any oath of office to be replaced by an affirmation. This replaces "I swear," with "I affirm," and drops any religious reference like "so help me god."
