Gloria Swanson, Barbara Walters, 1981 Interview
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- Gloria Swanson is interviewed by Barbara Walters about her controversial 1981 autobiography "Swanson" and allegations of her one-time affair with Joseph P. Kennedy. Walters also reads a letter denouncing Swanson from Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
Gloria Swanson comes across as straightforward and doesn't put on airs. Barbara Walters on the other hand is pretentious, affected, and full of herself.
Was that an interview? It seemed more like a interrogation.
@@pmafterdark That's how Walters got so famous!
Was that famous or infamous?
You couldn't have said it better.
@@moondancer3157 - I believe Barbara W. rise to fame was from Visititing many casting couches.
How precious to hear her sing. What an amazing movie Sunset Boulevard is.
She was so beautiful even up until her last days. She took care of herself so well.. What a GEM!
@Susan B COOL!
she looks so amazing!!!!
Her voice sounds also so young! She was a realy cool Lady, may she rest in peace...
Also she always said that sugar was really bad for you and so she ate no sugar .
@@gardensofthegods If only she had warned me. 😃
How absolutely rude to ask Gloria if people are surprised she's not senile. How old is Barbara Walters now? Wonder how she would feel being asked such a demeaning question?
Strange how its turned around now. I saw Barbara on some things a few years back and thought there was some problems with senility going on with her.
2019 has Barbara in full blown dementia
I'm guessing the celebs she interviewed knew most of the questions she asked.
You may not know Barbara Walters very well. She's a disgusting person and always has been. She's filth.
@Raven Whitechapel Not true. How rude of you!
Gloria Swanson shows great intelligence and class. Barbara Walters and Eunice Kennedy..not so much.
Barbara Walters is a terrible interviewer-embarrassing. Gloria, on the other hand, was a wonderful woman and I feel very privileged to have known her. Sometime, when the weather was good for it, she would call and invite me to come over nd get some sun in her garden. Her apartment was on the ground floor and that garden was the open space we see in this clip.
Chris Albertson wow that’s so cool that you knew her! After reading her autobiography, I’ve become a big fan of hers:)
How lucky you were!
Chris Albertson Swanson brought joy to millions especially during the depression era when cinema was the only positive escape. My grandmother adored her and said she was a kind and gracious and caring lady . “A rarity in my days” she’d say; referring to the ‘putting on of airs’ most in the city social clubs did in the 20s 30s and 40s. She reminds me of my grandmother when I see her and hear her speak. Walters... eh. She needed the controversy and sensationalism to keep her on top. Had little if any interest in who Ms Swanson was. I’d like to know what Ms Swanson thought of that interview ?!
Barbara Walters caters to mainstream media.
Chris, how did you meet her?
Barbara was THE worst interviewer. It was ALL about her.
She's adorable! Such an elegant woman,
Barbara was annoying even then, ugh.
Agreed 100%
Barbara Wa Wa has always been like this.

She’s a typical BageI.
Ms Swanson was smoooking hot even in her 80's. Wow.
@AMANDA WOOD She looks fabulous. NO BOTOX!
It looks like Herman fuckng munster
Johnny Smallcock and his vile tasting toffees
You go around, demanding attention like s little kid.
You didn’t get enough hugs as a child.
I agree!
She was a classy lady till her very end!
The journalist is horrid, aggressive and awful. Gloria instead such an intelligent, talented and beautiful soul. Wonderful actress. One of the best
+Twaddles McGee are u 7? So unnecessary and tacky
Twaddles McGee When the psychiatrist says "take two pills a day to avoid psychotic episodes" he means it dear. Get well soon Sybil.
Twaddles McGee
(looks out into crowd) Wouldn't it be wild if twat-ddles is really that rude sea hag Baba Wawa? Hahhahahah I love it!
Yes, she was. But she was also agreed to do the interview with Walters. Did Gloria really think Barbara (in 1981) was only going to discuss her silent film career?
I was really surprised to hear Gloria Swanson. She was an intelligent woman, an honest one, and in no way vulgar. She lived life as it came to her and when she was taken over by Joe Kennedy---a rough, arrogant man---she lived thru it and out of it. In this interview we can see the honesty and intelligence of a lovely lady who has no gripes. She lived life as best she could. I'm really surprised that I cam away liking her.
WOW! Gloria Swanson in 1981 was incredibly beautiful. Wise, feminine, articulate, and sharp!
I've never laughed so hard in my life. Gloria was NOT having any of Barbra's mess. LMAO
@osimeon00 Yes. You saw how she raised up out of her seat to check Barbara's dumb ass? LMAO!!!!
Damn straight. "Barbara Walters" (really Bar-Bu-Rah) is an ancient evil from the Carpathian mountains that sucks the life out of her victims. We defeated her in Carpathia years ago but she moved to the states to feast once more.
We will defeat it again, be gone Bar-Bu-Rah!
Can't wait to see.
That affair that she had Joseph kennedy he robbed her. What a bastard!!!
'Mess' love that rejoinder!
They set Gloria Swanson up by making her go on and on about Joe Kennedy when she clearly wanted to move on and then having the letter ready to read at the end. Shame on Barbara Walters.
The letter only made me think that no one cares about the kennedy’s and how much better Gloria was
Rest in peace Gloria Swanson.
Gloria so natural, so romantic. More early "Hollywood" less Kennedy would have been nice.
Barbara Walters made herself look like a Mean Girl in this interview. I use to admire her, but The View is completely beneath her, and this much earlier interview makes me understand why she ended up with The View. When I was younger, I thought she was a "real" journalist.
The View is a disgustingly mean show with horrible catty, cruel women. I guess Barbara paved the way for tv meanness.
Bar-Bu-Rah is a carpthian demon
I watched The Today Show with my grandmother in the early 60s. I was about 5. My grandmother said Barbara was a horrible hostess as she was rude to her guests.
Words cannot express how much I loathe Barbara Walters......
Gloria Swanson looks great at 81. Mrs. Shriver would have done herself a favor by not commenting at all (let alone with a single-spaced multiple page novel she wrote). Swanson was right to say Joe Kennedy was unsophisticated. He was a hick.
Yap, he was a hick. Who amassed a vast fortune across numerous theatres of endeavor, served in several high-profile government capacities, and raised a brood of bright, remarkable, high-achievers. A total hillbilly.
@@stephencalder8357 He was an evil and completely unscrupulous criminal, worse even than many mafia mobsters.
Wow. She got Gloria all angered. I would have told Barbara to read the book. Anything she needed to know about that topic was in the book. And it really is. She lays it all on the line about her and Joe Kennedy.
Sure, she cheated. But Barbara and Hugh gave the impression that JP Kennedy was a victim. He had multiple affairs and made all his money by breaking the law!
And if you caught it, he was a 3 minute man! 😂😂😂😂
If we don’t fall we slip in this journey of life. Sure ask a question or two about the affair but there’s so much more to this woman’s life. A tour of her garden would have been nice too.
@@isabellapaar9549 Yes, you are so correct!
Barbara was on a mission. Kennedy money reaches all. Shame its a woman set to try and hurt another woman. Gloria, glorious indeed and class all day long.
Gloria Swanson a Legend
Kudos to Miss Swanson for handling that interview so well. What was the point of trying to undermine such a star from the original Hollywood days? Tacky tacky you Barbara. On the other hand, what a treat to hear Miss Swanson sing and graciously defend her choices.
Gloria was one tough old time Chicago broad, I'm telling you. She is exactly like the fiery old dames I grew up around in Chicago in the 70s. Watching her is like sitting down with my Grandmas, or my great aunts and/or their friends. They loved to talk about the old days, and the men in the other room were just as much fun to listen to. Yes indeed, Gloria could have hung around at my house and fit right in, a martini in hand. She's just like them. The most glamourous of them all, wow what a woman.
Gloria Swanson handles Barbara Walters with patience , firmness and grace.
I read the book 3 times it was that good ! Why is it always the women who gets the BS for the affair . Joe Kennedy used her & when he was done he walked out & never looked back . I also would like to say that Gloria got three Jewish men out of Germany during world war 2 & brought them here to work on a business that she owned . I also think that Eunice Kennedy should take a look at her father & not put all the blame on Miss Swanson , it takes two to tango ( Just Saying )...
spooky katt 👍👍👍
I'm glad she helped the Jews. God will bless her for doing that!
Joe Kennedy sounds scary seeing Gloria's reactions and expressions...
Is there anything scary about the importer and distributor of Scotch Whisky who requests his daughter to be lobotomised? There may be millions who thought J. Kennedy a little scary.
Michael Greenwood I’m going to need you to say that LOUDER for those in the mezzanine section . Clearly Joe was not stable and was more likely behaving like an obsessive fan that Gloria couldn’t get rid of from how she’s behaving .
Well he was a bootlegger, who lobotomised his daughter & financed Jack's election campaign with Mob money. Then sat & watched while Bobby declared war on the Mafia, putting the family at risk: as Joe had promised Jack would leave the Mob alone in return for the cash.
He was!!!
I felt sorry for rose tbh 😪😪
Rich of Barbara to grill her about her affair at the very time Barbara was in a secret affair with a married senator.
Alan, I cannot thank you enough for posting this! I have been dying to see this interview and haven't been able to track it down. Thank you, thank you, thank you! If you should ever have anything more about Miss Swanson I would love if you would be so kind as to share it as well!

We don’t care what you like Barbara, your interviewing a REAL movie star an icon, Gloria has sooo much more class then you will ever dream of having!
Ms Shriver could have shown much more class, I read Ms Swanson's book,I found her honesty refreshing, and she was far more fair when talking about Kennedy than most of us would be. It is a great read, and she was a brave woman who made some poor decisions along the way,you might say like the rest of us........................
Gloria was 80 but her energy was that of one in their 40's or 30's ..Fabulous Lady.. thank you for Sunset BLD, Gloria
What a charming, intelligent, down to earth lady GS is compared to the classless, fake, rude, ba- ba- wa- wa.
READ HER BOOK WHEN IT CAME OUT AND WAS WOWED BY HER TENACITY!
My first time watching this video and whoever manages this content.Gloria Swanson could whip as whole bunch of actors of Hollyweird into shape in 2019. What a graceful elegant woman. Wow, 81 years old and looks really good. She really took care of herself, and not in a vain way but you can see she was healthy, alert, and whip sharp. When she said " we weren't death mutes when we were making silent pictures. She was sharp! I watch sunset blvd and was actually frightened. She was good. She can rest easy because she left gems with us today.
Barbara is just rude
@Sweetpea You are incorrect. It was Barbara Marx who married Frank Sinatra.
Agree, not Barbara's best moment I'm afraid.
Sleeping with married men is rude.
C W your point?
Gloria left a more lasting legacy than Rose
Definitely
I want to be like Gloria when I grow up! What an amazing lady she was :)
Wonderful singing voice!!!!
So wonderful to see Miss Swanson. Just saw Glenn Close (again) in Sunset Blvd...and thought of Miss Swanson and all she represented
Not a damn wrinkle and she's over 80 and decades before Botox
+Patrick3183 There was plastic surgery long before it became available to the masses & I believe Swanson's wrinkle free face is proof positive of that fact.
Ginger Vision
disagree
Xcuze Some people just have good genes. I've met people in their 80s who didn't have wrinkle...they took very good care of themselves, and also had genetic. And I know they didn't have a facelift or use tape. Not everyone ages badly, you know.
Not Neccessarily. Swanson was a health nut long before there WERE health nutts. She did Yoga and quit drinking and smoking in the 30's. And it's all to do with genetics. My mom lived to the age of 86 and had no facial wrinkles but she had them in her neck.
Exactly thekingofmoney. My mom ofcourse had neck lines but not One wrinkle in her 86 year old face.
I can't believe Barbara Walters. She is not an interviewer. She is an interrogator. I don't understand why the lady has to put up with it.
Gloria Swanson! What a class act! Forget Barbara Walters. She should have got an Oscar for “Sunset Boulevard”! What a perfect Lady! People can’t act like her anymore. Or be her. For sure.
Thank you very much for this!
Love Gloria Swanson... it's a shame she couldn't have been interviewed by someone else. I enjoy BW interviews when they stay classy, but when she delves into gossip that's when it goes south, but I guess she was trying to make sense of her own affairs with a married man.
Anyhow Swanson's book was/is a great read. I couldn't put it down. I'm glad she wrote it sharing a look into her whirlwind and sometimes tough life. Bless her.
She did lead roles with Wallace Reid and Rudolf Valentino. She's true legend.
Gloria Swanson was like most women in the arts, never paid as much as men, never given the respect men were, and honest to a fault. I would have loved to meet her and given her some plants from my garden.
What are you talking about. Do some research. She was one of the very highest paid stars of classic Hollywood. Along with others such as Mary Pickford, Norma Shearer, Mae West, Greta Garbo, Irene Dunne, Claudette Colbert, Carole Lombard etc.
Gloria was a fascinating personality. It would have been great if she could have been profiled more often and by journalists decidedly classier than that annoying Walters woman. And boy, do I remember those fashions!
I love this woman! She's simply wonderful and in so many ways...
Gloria Swanson 81 years old, God Bless her. Barbara same old questions. Miss Swanson experienced so much in her life, not just a small portion...kennedy
Eunice Shriver could have been a bit more classy.
The Kennedys had no class. They bought their way into politics and Hollywood.
When you come from the gutters you have no class no matter how much money you come into
Frank Sinatra hated Barbara Walters.
What a terrible statement from the Kennedy's "what a lasting value has her [Swanson's] life left us". wow. gfy.
Thank you Alan for your great video's.
Gloria Swanson seemed like a very strong and ambitious woman. She was very gracious in the interview.
I saw Gloria Swanson in 1970. She was doing a play and got on the elevator. I was so star struck. She was so classy and majestic; gorgeous skin - no wrinkles. What a star. Barbara did a poor job with this interview.
I enjoyed looking into this piece. Swanson was great. I get where she is coming from and I don’t think she is upset with any question. She is just making her point. BW is not always my fave interviewer but I thought she was asking the questions that we would want to know the answers. As for Eunice, I guess she really couldn’t say anything else. Lol. Though, no comment might have been better.
She was so beautiful. It is sad to see how time flies.
Can’t believe she was in her 80s, sounded like she could have been in her 50s. Amazing.
For her age she is alert, intelligent and really looks good. Her skin is so dewey and looks great. RIP
What a beautiful, articulate, interesting woman. Her makeup & hair give me a hint of how Marilyn Monroe would have aged too.
Did any reporter badger Walter about her affair?? SMH
Thank you!
Sunset Boulevard was not a ‘comeback’ it was a ‘RETURN!’
Those Kennedy's and the love of movie stars I see goes way back.
+viyau It was a love of sex, booze, dope, and political power. This interview left out the fact that Joseph P. stole Gloria's money.
Oh wow. I did not know about the money being stolen. Those Kennedys were definately not saints.
Wait....he needed her money? I was under the impression that he was fairly well-off.
From what I understand it was due to some investments that went bad, used her money to do that.
Incredible listening to Gloria Swanson.
what a beautiful lady. Natural and sweet. A very interesting life - sounds like she takes no bullshit too. 'Who could be an atheist' she said. Love her RIP x
Odd, that Barbara sits and argues the 'merits, or demerits' of Swanson's Affair with Joe Kennedy, and why she chose to go public about it; when all the while, Barbara's 'Affair' with a married man, her work, 'Boss', is a ghost that was lurking in her closet. Wonder if, when Barbara finally acknowledged her affair, if the memory of this interview came to mind.
Gosh...when I'm 81 I hope I can be as amazing as this lovely woman.
Miss Swanson was a class act
She sang beautifully and she showed up with a rose... Goddess
It truly blows my mind that Barbara Walters is an interviewer as profession, she is rude and awful!!!!
Bet Gloria was a hoot to be around. She strikes me as a lady full of life.
At 14:57 she looks at her carnation and said when you look at this (carnation) I don’t know how you could be a atheist.🙏🏻✝️🙏🏻
She was so interesting I love to hear her talk. So classy. What a life she lived a great lady and actress
gloria, my dear...you are absolutely enchanting. Would have loved to have been your neighbor. But Babs, i wouldn't pee on you if your hair was on fire.
I often holiday at her old beach house in San Clemente Ca. It's has the most beautiful panoramic view of the Pier and ocean.
It's my favorite place in the world to be.
Barbara trying to give this woman a heart attack ! Now Barbara that was heidious! Joe Kennedy got what he wanted , and you should know that !
Why does Barbara always talk over whom ever she is interviewing?
I love Gloria Swanson!
This woman Barbara was like the Spanish Inquisition, sheesh, I've never seen such an uncomfortable interview where the subject looked like she felt like she was being attacked.
Love her. I think she had great repentance for things that weren’t necessarily even her fault, because she cares.
Wow. Barbara attacked Gloria. Definitely wasn't expecting that.
Classy Lady! Even in her 80s a Beautiful and witty Woman!
That was hard to watch. But I have more respect for Gloria Swanson now, than I did before.
Her honest regret over choices she made, surpassed the vulgarity of Walter’s interview.
Swanson should've NVR given Walters the time of day!!! Walters was so unprofessional and judgmental; like she doesn't sin or make mistakes?!!!! She's almost attacking Swanson like a detective would.
He found excitement.♥️
Completely different 💄
All the Kennedy MEN are Womanizing…

Because she wanted people to buy her book and read it for themselves.
Barbara Walters is the most overrated TV personality in history. In this interview, equipped only with an ounce of National Enquirer level of decency and a pound of moxy, she badgers, an eledrly woman, one of the most important actresses in the history of cinema, about a love affair. This is the kind of trash with which Walters made a name for herself. She's a shameless, pushy, creep. How else could a mediocre interviewer with a laughable speech impediment have climbed her way to the top of her business? This interview was so beneath Gloria Swanson's dignity -- painful to watch.
Don't forget Babs had an affair with a married man!😃
Babs is nothing short of a typical BageI. That’s the truth.

How am I not surprised. Did it happen before this interview?if so, that would have been soooo perfect if Gloria was given the heads up and shot back about that when Babs asked her about if she felt guilty or not about the affair.
Gloria was brilliant, stunningly beautiful and epitomized true grace and talent from beginning to end. One of my absolute favorites!
The opportunity to talk to an amazing star who had the most amazing life and interests and the questions were mainly about an affair. Trashy
AGREED!
Well that's TRASHY Barbara Walter's for you. A woman who got where she did on her back.
Never heard of her until I read her wiki bio 6 minutes ago. I have no idea what kind of women she was but I’m not surprised by Walters questioning. The wiki bio, however true is may or may not be in terms of reflecting her true character, certainly makes her look like an ambitious, yet problematic woman in her personal life. Wow
Barbara Walters was trashy and jealous of stars.
she aged extremely well, not just her looks, but her voice as well.
Just like Barbara to continue the 'affair with Joe Kennedy' questions for over half the interview. She's symbolic of what's been wrong with so-called journalism for a hundred years. Here you sit with arguably the greatest actress of a by-gone era (right behind Lillian Gish).... an America National Treasure...nothing more interesting or significant to ask? Really?
What I found most funny was that Gloria seemed to be oblivious and almost angry about the fact that she was a mistress. I guess in old age, you no longer care about those things. Lol!
I thought she was very good at articulating the moral dilemma she had found herself in.
Barbara poses the questions that the lowest common denominator viewer would ask. That's why she's so popular. She admitted in her own memoir that she had had an affair with a married man--Senator Edward Brooke.
Sex sells. But here it's disrespectful to an 81 year old woman.
Then why did she write a book that featured it??
I am confident that Gloria Swanson will be remembered LONG after Eunice Kennedy Shriver is forgotten.
It's funny when Barbara Walters behind closed doors was having an affair with a Congressman hahahahaaaa!!!!!
I can’t stand Barbara Walters so rude! How dare she treat Miss Swanson that way!! Barbarawana could have talked about so many other subjects. Miss Swanson was a true movie star! There much be thousands of wonderful stories about the movies she made! Miss Swanson is a classy lady, opposite of Barbarawana!!
Gloria Swanson was BEAUTIFUL even at that age!!!!
OMG I was shocked on minute 7:38 when she starts singing, ,I didn't know she sang so well she still had a wonderful voice at age 84 and she looked beautiful probably without any plastic surgery I dare to guess. not like today where people use and abuse botox and horrible procedures that transform their faces. Good for you GLoria. RIP . you were a true movie star !!!!!
Ms Swanson has such a soothing and comforting voice I love her
Stupid interview... All the BS about Joe Kennedy.. it upset her.. so lame.. she didnt come off very well.. Barbara was aggressive and interrupted Miss Swanson.. not very uplifting to someone who was a great star in her day and amazing dame.
Yeah, I would have been far more interested in her thoughts on playing Norma Desmond. But no, just more E!Hollywood affair stuff that never ends well.
Still, it was fun to watch, and I'm glad it's here.
Ah, the overrated Barbara Walters, mangling an interview with Gloria Swanson. At least she didn't ask her what kind of tree she is!
