3 cups (24 ounces) Lemon lime soda

4 (10 ounces) containers Pillsbury Vanilla Frosting
16 ounces raspberry preserves

The nicer ingredients certainly make it feel like it's worth it. Loved the lemon zest.
Possible video idea: as a horrible baker I would be combing everything all at once then mixing it would be cool to do a side by side comparison of the differences of doing things the “lazy” way versus your way!

How about an episode on baking on a budget. Due to the financial crunch that we are facing, learning to bake on a budget - making our dollar stretch could be informative.

Dollar Tree sells Icing Sugar that you could have also grabbed along with the icing. It would have helped firmed up the icing more to make it easier to pipe. Most Dollar Trees also sells shortening, and vanilla even, which could also be used to making icing or used to help with stability of the premade icing lol. But It is really nice to see you baking again! It has been a hot minute since we have seen a baking video from Ro!
Do they sell apple sauce? Coz she could have used that as an egg substitute or vinegar
Was thinking the same. Could have even made a simple frosting and cake from scratch if they'd have shopped another $ tree. Many of them also sell eggs and oil as well as lemon juice which would have added to the cake flavor. I don't buy much in the way of food at the Dollar Tree but don't think this was a fair comparison. Erewhon is just a rip off for people with too much money. I got the same exact strawberries at a farmer's market for $6 that they were selling for $18 and quickly realized that it was more about bragging and being seen there than actual good quality products. I just hate to see people shopping there and literally throwing cash away.
Some of them sell dried fruit too, which I just thought about,
I bit you could off smashed up some lemon drops almost like a dust into the frosting as well.

They sell a lot more. I'm really disappointed with this shopping. It's like they already had the idea that Dollar Tree has nothing, so they didn't even look. My Dollar Tree also has a refrigerated section that has milk and butter. I feel like she lives in an area with a ton of Dollar Trees and it wouldn't have been hard to at least try to make them similar.
They didn't give Dollar Tree a chance, they do have eggs, flour and all kinds of sugars, oil and lemon juice all the ingredients from scratch on a small version of it 😢.
Sadly all of the stores I went to didn't have this, so I bought what was local to me. i'm having a ton of fun with these new style videos, so I might do another one with a different theme!
99cent stores were the stores that had produce and eggs when I lived in Southern California

Not all stores have the same stuff , my dollar tree doesn't have anything that people on UA-cam show in their visits to the stores...my store is terrible.

It feels like they already had an opinion about the Dollar Tree and had no desire to try and make something good from there. It would have been nice to have an actual comparison. I've seen some people make amazing things with Dollar Tree food items.
@@bethanysolimine5428 The stores I went to this is all they had, its the only company I had to visit multiple stores. I'll check out different ones if I do something similar again to see what they have.
The goal of the video was actually to make the BEST cake possible with the ingredients they sold at the store. Hopefully they will be more stocked if I do this again!

This whole video screamed elitism! I was so disappointed in the fact that she didn’t even try!
I'd love to see more like this. Maybe one where Ro elevates inexpensive things like how that Dollar Tree cake looked really good even though it wasn't expensive. Proof that anyone can make an elevated cake with what they have, type of thing.
Maybe another 3 price point baking challenge, only that time everything looks identical with no extra added ingredients. I understand not all Dollar Tree stores have all the baking things (the one close to me does have oil, though), but I feel like Target also sells almond oil, lemon oil, and dried raspberries if those were ingredients she really wanted to use. Perhaps not all Targets, but I know I've seen organic dried raspberries in at least 2 of the stores near me. Again, I get the ingredient limitations, I'd just like to see a baking challenge without extra ingredients or decorations. 3 identical cakes with identical ingredients made with ingredients of different quality/price points, can you tell which one is which?
This would be a fun way to do it, and is something we talked about. For this one we decided to go with 'lets make the best cake possible with the ingredients they sell'.
I did check my Target for some of the items you listed but they sadly didn't have them. Excited to do more videos like this though, it was really fun!

The erhewon cake looks so so pretty and those raspberries omggg ive never seen such pretty berries but for 4x the price of target i would say target’s cake wins for sure!
The Target one was DELICIOUS. That is by far the best bang for your buck... highly recommended if you're able to do it!
Isn’t it an unfair judging when the cakes looks so different? It would be fairer if they looked identical and you just had to judge by taste 🤷♀️
We thought about what to focus on a lot for this video. Is it looks? Is it 'make the best cake you can with the ingredients they sell'? Is it try to make them all taste the same? Is it buy similar cost ingredients only? etc etc.
I decided to go with 'try and make the best cake possible with the ingredients they sell in the store itself'. That said, I might do different approaches for future videos! Theres no way to completely compare them 100% fair, but truly did my best!

@@melindarivera6598 Yeah I will most likely do something like this as well. All of the dollar stores I went to didn't have enough ingredients to make a better cake, so might need to change up the stores a little bit.
@HenrietteAndersen26, I agree! I had the same thought. They should look the same. And I don’t think you should tell the judges what stores you got the stuff from. Obviously that biased them too, they were like the Dollar Store doesn’t have fruit so this must be from the Dollar Store. You should only have them rank the cakes and guess the cost.
@@RosannaPansino I think making the cakes as identical as possible would be more fun. Dollar general would have been a good option for ultra cheap. I know mythical does this and honestly I love it.
My aunt would take store bought icing add it to a bowl. She would add powdered sugar and a little milk, maybe some vanilla extract to make the icing more stable. At my local dollar tree you can buy all of this. She would even "doctor" up store bought cake mix. When you ate the "store bought" cake you would think she spend more than $10 - $15.
Unfair advantage to Erewhon. Each recipe should have been the same to get a fair comparison.
