Last time India did so was during 1971. That time was crazy. Pakistan was running a genocide in our land, India who was supporting us, was under direct US threat, UK warships and subs were crawling all over the Indian ocean, so was Soviet warships and Subs, counterbalancing the situation. At one point US 7th fleet entered the Bay of Bengal. So, India has no other choice to go under direct defense pact with USSR.
This time, there's no such direct threat. The only similarity is - we're again very clost to WW3 just like in 1971. But SA is not the center. So, this seems a bit weird.
