@mbitaacoustic he made an S23 impressions vid two days ago.
@Mbita Acoustic you can not deny that they're first class at what they're doing, there's a reason why they're at the top rn.
Certainly, Apple consolidating parts is bound to be impactful.
@Mbita Acoustic bro check out dave 2D Samsung S23 video. Its better than both MKBHD and Mrwhosetheboss video and its like 3 mins longer. There's nothing interesting about the S23 this year
One thing to note with micro LED: There are some early studies that suggest that it is easier to move cameras under the screen with that technology since the space between pixels is larger. People are focusing on the switch from manufacturers, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple is doing this because they want to get rid of the camera cutout in the near future and they believe this is the best approach.

*In 6 more phone cycles
@@playerroku4412 *50 more phone cycles 😂😂😂
Would be quite a step backwards honestly
Or maybe they want to make third party repair impossible with all those proprietary tools to change the screen
micro led is already being developed by samsung
Can we get a video on microLED? I know there’s probably a lot of vids already out in them, but Marques makes them so easily digestible with the graphs and how he explains everything. I feel like there’s a lot of people who have no idea how screens work, and it would be a nice addition to his “how tech works” library.
It's basically a screen where each pixel is a separate RGB LED diode which allows for all contrast and color upsides of OLED, while also being brighter and more durable.
@@BuggiEU I thought mini_LED didn't have lights behind each pixel? Like there's a grid of LED's but they're not pixel sized so they aren't as precise.
@@andregouws7223 Mini LED is just another type of LED used to light the back of an LCD screen, like QLED. MICRO LED is a different technology, and it's not light behind each pixel, multicolor light IS the pixel.
@@BuggiEU no you’re combining pled and micro led. Micro led doesn’t have a led for each pixel, but it has A LOT, so it can get pretty much equivalent black levels to oled at higher brightness.
@@TounguepunchfartboxIt does, just check Wikipedia or google it. What you’re talking about is mini LED, while the topic is micro LED.
You guys are blowing it out of the park with the graphics. WOW!
I love when Marques does these deep-dive type vids where he goes into the why of the tech rather than just reviewing it.
Except when he vastly oversimplifies and gets things wrong.

Excellent knowledge for users, IT geeks, and investors. Great job, thanks 👍👍
this channel has been so great and frequent lately :)
Great video. You bring up a topic a lot aren’t talking about and bringing light to something someone didn’t think of
This is such a great video, well done Marques and team!
What’s the point though? You could literally just listen to his videos and gain the same knowledge or understanding. Everything other than what he is saying is basically pointless and done just for “likes” i.e… he wants to make as much $$$ as possible per video.
Enjoying these type of vids! Keep it up MKBHD

The video was incredibly long and uninformative. What are you talking about? It could be summarised into a single 1-minute video without losing any information, as follows:
Apple wants to make custom parts for themselves because it gives them more integration, reduces quality control, and saves cost. A consumer will notice no tangible difference. Other phone manufacturers don't do this because they don't have the volume and margins that Apple does. Examples of parts they can produce in-house would be radio antennas and micro-led screens.
I really do enjoy when you dip your toe into the business side of tech. Nicely done!!
I found you a couple of weeks ago and your content is just AMAZING! Sending cheers from Brazil.
Great video as always. So much interesting information here. We want more of these! (Or I do at least)
I'd just like to say the visual ways in which you explained things in this video were absolutely on point and made the information much easier to digest and enjoy regardless of whether i even care about Apple

I've seen a lot of vids. You are spot on. Logical. Well presented. Informative. And we learn how much we rely on Chinese manufacturing. Lots of lessons here. Good work. Keep it up.
Bing chilling
He’s been doing this for years!! He just keep getting better as time passes by.
On the same token, China has learned how much they rely on global consumerism to keep their population fed.
Oh the rabbit hole goes far deeper than you know. There are a great many ubiquitous products that nobody cares to know about. Much of the world wouldn't function without these items and they come from China. It's not that other countries can't make them, it's that they don't have the manufacturing infrastructure specific to it anymore.
Love the effort you take for these videos. I've been watching your videos for a long time, but you still manage to impress me!!
Why would i ever want to stop watching this channel. This is the best tech channel on youtube in my opinion.

@@charleswallis8395 thats kinda the trick no?
Well there is a tradeoff mate, it's generally good content but not very comprehensive and presented in his own opinion. There is nothing wrong with that, but you got to realize that he's often wrong and has some big biases. That's why its important to listen to "long talks" and other tech journalists to get a deeper understanding of tech (if that's what you care about of course)
Such a great post Marques. I learned things I had no idea were in play!
Well done, so informative!
Hey you should make a video explaining all types of displays because I don’t think I’m the only one when I say the difference between pled, amoled, led, micro led, etc. just a suggestion
Theres likely already videos made talking about the different display technologies.
I’m interested to see how this might affect repairability. With apple’s track record of making their phones difficult to repair, it could prove to be even more difficult if they now exclusively control their own supply chain
This is a really good point that I'm sure MKBHD thought about but didn't wanna talk about because he's an apple sheep.
It's the same thing with lightning port/cable, Apple exclusively manufactures those, so they get to price it like they want, AND they get an extra cut if other companies want to feature the port on their products, because it's "Apple's technology".
I'm afraid they'll do something similar with the screens, cuz apple is apple.
Their recent track record has literally shown otherwise. Apple has redesigned components to make it easier to replace them (i.e. redesigning the display so that Face ID still works after a 3rd party fix). The iPhone 14 line up also received a 7/10 for reparability from iFixit -- which hasn't been seen since the iPhone 7. The back glass of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus were redesigned to be easily replaced rather than entirely swapping out a whole phone. The redesign helped slash the price to $200 instead of $500 for out of warranty repairs for those devices.
@@jasonhaven7170 The changes in repairability only apply to the non Pro models of the 14 series lineup, the Pros still retain the same back glass non-repairability as previous devices, not to mention there’s still a whole remote service feature that needs to be done if you go the DIY route Apple officially has for certain devices and replace the parts yourself so they’re marked as genuine and enable features like truetone and auto brightness.
I’m really hoping Apple adds more to the repairability of iPhones however. The ability to buy parts from them as well as rent the tools out for such is already a decent first step. I just wish we didn’t have these software locks when you’re literally receiving the same components they themselves use when you have their service techs repair your device instead.
@@jasonhaven7170 Going to go out on a limb here and say you've never taken apart a phone in your life.

I love those "deeper" dive into a subject videos. I believe many people will be surprised that Samsung, Apple's main android side competition, is making displays for iPhone (although Samsung Display is kinda separate company from Samsung Electronics tbh).
Check out TechAltar if you love those. He goes a bit deeper than MKBHD since Marques’s audience is more mainstream
Dude, profit above all. Samsung doesn't care if they're providing some of their best "stuff" for rivals. It's a business. Samsung wouldn't have an entire display division if it didn't want to sell them.
Samsung is a monster behemoth conglomerate, making 20% of all Korea's GDP. They make anything and everything
@@jakublizon6375 That's why Samsung Display is a separate company from Samsung electronics so that business is first and not competing.
When i first heard this, my view on samsung rose, but also my view on apple. Apple isnt a manufacturer but a business that compiles the best from different companies (ie samsung lg whatever whatever) and i liked apple even more.
What a brilliantly done explanation. Why I love this channel.
I've never owned or used an iphone but I love learning about them and the company's history, founders and business practices have always been interesting to me and I really like your channel
I'm pretty intrigued by this. It seems like it might actually incite more competition within the mobile phone industry
And that's eventually going to be true for each of us individual consumers too!
Chassis & buttons? SLA 3D printed. Custom processors? RISC-V suppliers. Custom 8/10-layer PCBs? PCBchart. Operating System? Ubuntu Touch, Fairphone OS, LineageOS, etc.
Display, cameras, batteries, speakers, sensors, indicator LEDs, and ports? Off the shelf components with firmware based on something like the Librem 5, KitePhone, or if some major endomodular phone brand like Fairphone or Shiftphone makes their PCB designs-schematics-firmware open source and contributes then toward some industry standard.
Ultimately it would be cool to have multiple phone brands with interchangeable parts as well as customizable configuration builder/retailers like PCs and clothes right now but for phones & AR-XR glasses.

I have always wondered who manufactures the speakers in all of Apple's devices. Especially the ones in the current 14 and 16 inch Macbook Pros because they sound absolutely amazing.
Who does?
Its a secret company
Isn't Beats Audio under property of apple?
The sound is unreal on iPhone 14’s I was so surprised!
What's stranger yet is this isn't a new trend. My only past experience with iOS was an old iPhone 4S my father didn't want after an upgrade and I tried it out. I had a Galaxy S2 at the time, the difference in audio quality was staggering. Now I've bought my very first iPhone and it's just as surprising now as it was then. To be fair, I've only ever owned Galaxies up to this point. Maybe that just isn't Samsung's strong suit.
That analogy with the triangle and the squares was brilliant. Love the new intro too!

I love these videos where you share your thoughts!
Interesting video. Thanks. Could you also look into efficiency vs innovation during Cook's reign? (his focus has been mainly on production efficiency and ROI while Job was mainly focused on innovation angle)
Did Apple ever innovate though? Don’t get me wrong I’m fully integrated into the Apple ecosystem and quite happy with it, but even under Jobs, Apple usually did something other manufacturers did but the reason Apple’s versions of those features were considered revolutionary is because Apple refined and polished the feature to the point “it just works”, and also because Apple built an ecosystem around certain products to make them a better choice than alternatives.
Example, the iPod was probably the most revolutionary product Apple made before the iPhone but other music players did also exist along with it, but Apple had a super refined user experience and also had iTunes to make purchasing and syncing music super seamless. One could argue Apple still does something along those lines with its current products but it certainly isn’t as much as under Jobs
@@MYerra99 Thanks for the comment. If you'd expect something from scratch, then it is called invention not innovation necessarily. But in my view below happened during Jobs time: iMac: A desktop computer that introduced the design aesthetics and simplicity that would come to define Apple's products.
iPod: A portable music player that popularized digital music and paved the way for the iPhone.
iPhone: A smartphone that revolutionized the mobile industry and defined the modern smartphone user experience.
iPad: A tablet computer that popularized the concept of a tablet as a main computing device.
Mac OS X: An operating system that combined the stability and security of Unix with the ease of use of a graphical user interface.
Apple Retail Stores: A network of retail stores that provided customers with a hands-on experience with Apple's products and helped establish the brand's identity.
@@MYerra99 So, they just see a product, and make it much better, for example, the iPhone originated from feature phones, and the iPod originated from other music players. But for the Apple 1, it wasn't an original idea, but, all the computers were crazy expensive, so they made it commercial.
I genuinely love how this channel is making better then professional and friendly graphics

Great video MKBHD. It’s true, having custom and self designed parts for the product gives an immense advantage over the competition in regards to software-hardware optimisation, be it speed, power and area.
With Apple being a fabless company, they would still ask the foundaries to manufacture the chips, but, this manufacturer (fabrication) variable is same as with Samsung, which is an IDM. When any semiconductor company do design the chips, they have well defined models from these fabs, which take into consideration the fabrication variables.
It's not worth for Apple to build their own fab, unless they're willing to manufacture of others.

Kinda makes you wonder if you might start seeing non-compete clauses between manufacturers and clients; e.g. preventing a client from building their own version for x numbers of years after the contract expires
I don’t think that would hold up unless they were like reverse engineering the chips
You mean patents.
Pretty naïve if you think this does not exist yet.
myeah
Qualcomm kinda is in that regard now with their modems on iphone they apple can't use other modem till 2024 likely then we would see a custom modem from Apple that's the reason why they brought Intel modem division
i used to watch sooo many tech channels like 5 years ago now i just watch you lol
The intro is just soo good...I watched it multiple times and still wanna do it..
Important to note: doing it yourself has one big consequence that wasn't mentioned unless I missed it: you end up putting all your eggs in one basket. If right now one of the screen manufacturers makes bad screens, or doesn't figure out the next big thing... You don't care. If your own department suddenly falls behind or bets on the wrong thing, you can't nearly as easily cut them off.
Yea but apple’s not going to do it themselves unless theirs is more dependable than a 3rd party
@@awsomeguy1997 If Apple didn't care that much about making a one trillion dollars then, perhaps. Profit before everything else. Stupid economy..
Not only that but if they’re condensing BT, Wifi, and Cellular in one, that means if one thing goes bad your phone is basically gonna be unusable for calls or any form of connectivity
That's not Apple's MO. They are super conservative when it comes to fundamental changes and will only do so if they think they can do it better.
It's even worse than that for apple, the all in one chips.. yah those exist. They've been on the market for over a decade, it's apple that doesn't know how to work them into their system.
As you said in video about how apple sources displays, i had recently seen a LTT video where they. Had opened 2 Mac studios and they had completely different motherboard layouts coz they were made by different companies, but the performance was very similar,
that was the PSU
Dude your studio lighting setup is so clean and balanced
Excellent analogy.
My biggest concern about merging cellular, WiFi, and Bluetooth all into one chip is if it will still perform as well as the individual chips. Like how all in one WiFi boxes tend to perform worse than a dedicated modem, switch, and access point.
Those modem/router combos sucking is more a matter of making them cheap than making them good.
Yet apples, CPU, GPU, Ram and neural engine on one chip works really well.
Higher possibility of them all becoming more effective than for them to all suffer in performance
@@mrsittingmongoose Exactly. I bought a good router/modem combo and it has been the best router I've ever had
I'm not an engineer but I'm pretty sure the analogy you used doesn't work that well here. Apple designs advanced SoCs and microchips (System on a chip), not legacy WiFi boxes. To give you a better idea of it, even the MagSafe (magnetic charging) CASES that they make for the iPhone are powered by microchips and interact with iPhone when you put them on - the iPhone recognizes the Apple case and makes a sound and shows a screen popup to assure you it's an Apple case. So, yeah... we're talking current and even futuristic tech here. I mean, what they achieved with the M1, M2 Apple Silicone is next-level stuff. We've never seen consumer-grade computers so efficient and yet powerful before. As Marques said, their R&D budget and top class engineers mean pretty much the sky is the limit.
Please make more videos like this. Loved it! You could perhaps cover what could be the next big tech that could or should be integrated in smart phones. More importantly please cover the commercial performance and discuss industry stats such as unit sales and bottom lines, compare marketing strategies. Would love to learn that from you. ❤️
Awesome content.
Triangle analogy is smart. Interesting vid.
Just want to say you’re really good at what you do. My favorite, actually.
Modems are a minefield of patents... It's been tried before, but qcomm and bcom basically own enough patents on modem-related tech that it's effectively impossible to develop one that doesn't infringe any of them.
The trick is to be the bigger tech company, then tell them to go fuck themselves if it works for Microsoft then it will work for apple
That’s called a monopoly
Apple bought Intel's cellular modem patents. Their chip is just not ready yet.
Patents eventually expire…
