    Here is an overview of the Waves Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain plugin, an emulation of the hardware used in the Mastering Suite of London’s Abbey Road Studios since the early 1970’s. Heard on albums like Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” and Radiohead’s “OK Computer,” the hardware is still in use at the studio.
    Overview first.

    Nice review. For mastering, I've found that the best way to use the plugin is to start from a fully reset device. Then methodically go from left to right in each module. Using the presets only made me waste time going through menu after menu with nothing I liked. The key for this plugin is using in moderation. Try to have a decent mix before you instantiate this plugin. Then use it to sweeten your mix. And yes, you should use a traditional maximizer/limiter after this plugin to catch peaks and to get to final volume.

    • @AlexFarranGuitar

      Precisely my thoughts too. Love this plugin for adding some colour and sweetening/leveling out the mix a little before applying a final limiter.

    Thanks for a professional tutorial. I really like this plugin, especially the tape equaliser, although I don't really know what it does, but it sounds good :) One question for you; does it happen that this or other plugins stop working and need to be restarted? I am using mainly Waves in Adobe Audition. I am also getting audio dropouts when restarting a track after pause. Could this be related to audition, the plugin or my crappy sound card (Sound Blaster ZRX)? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    • @GreenLightSound
      @GreenLightSound  4 роки тому +1

      I don't think I've ever had the problem of individual plugins that stop working, other than specific bugs that I already knew about. I would check if Waves plugins are compatible with Audition. Could be a sound card issue as well.
      As far as the tape EQ, it was originally meant to compensate for EQ differences when transferring between different tape machine standards. I assume you don't need it for that, but if it sounds good, it is good!

    Awesome turorial.. Which plugin would you recommend in terms of a novice with this or a similar plugin. You mentioned The Redd Console, TG12345, etc But out of the 3 for example, including the one in the review, how would you categorize the most important one or for what genres for a sound coloration?

    • @GreenLightSound
      @GreenLightSound  4 роки тому +1

      Any of these can work with any genre. The TG Mastering Desk is different than the other two because it's a mastering plugin, not a general channel strip. Being a tube console, the REDD has more coloration and the TG is cleaner. The REDD just has basic EQ and no compression, and the TG12345 has more EQ options, plus compression (though it's not standard compression). None of them is more important than another, and it's tough to use any on their own for mixing. For general, modern mixing purposes, I would go with an SSL-style channel strip. The Scheps Omni Channel is also very good and very versatile, and could host any of the other Waves plugins within it. If you had the Omni Channel plus the REDD you would have versatility plus color - a powerful setup.

    • @GreenLightSound
      @GreenLightSound  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the compliment. This mix has a lot of Slate Digital's Virtual Mix Rack on it for color, plus FabFilter's EQ, Compression, and De-essing. There also Soundtoys Decapitator on some of the guitar parts, plus the Novatron compressor from Kush. The vocals get compressed with an 1176 and LA-2A. A lot of my mix tone comes from my mix buss processing, which in this mix is Slate's VCC>Slate FG-Grey Bus Compressor>Ozone 7 EQ for a high shelf on the sides only>slight Stereo Widening>Pultec EQ.
      Before you buy plugins, demo them and really work with them for a while to see if they are worth purchasing. Better plugins don't always mean better mixes, and you can achieve a great mix with stock plugins. If you're not opposed to subscriptions, one of the best values is the Slate Digital All Access Pass. FabFilter's plugins are also fantastic, though a bit expensive. I really like Plugin Alliance (especially the bx_consoles) and McDSP. Try to get things on sale and build your collection slowly.

  • @TheDude-vx6wn
    @TheDude-vx6wn 5 років тому +1

    Thanks for the tutorial! What would you say are the differences between this and the SSL E or G? How should we decide which one to use? I have both. I'm new to mixing.

    • @GreenLightSound
      @GreenLightSound  5 років тому +1

      The TG Mastering Chain is used more for mastering, or taking already mixed program material and adding the final touches before release. It's not really meant for use on individual mix elements, though I'm sure you could use it that way. The SSL E and G series channel strips, and the consoles they come from, are more likely to be used for tracking and mixing since the actual desks provide many individual channels of EQ and compression. So use those when mixing individual elements, like snare drum, guitar, bass, vocals, etc. SSL E vs G is a matter of taste - they just have different EQ curves and the dynamics section reacts a bit differently between the two - G is a little cleaner than E.
      If you are new to mixing, I also suggest checking out my mix prep series and my compression 101 video, as they will cover the basics of mix prep and compression and set you up for success.

    • @GreenLightSound
      @GreenLightSound  5 років тому +3

      @@TheDude-vx6wn Mastering plugins are meant to process complex audio signals like a full mix, rather than individual mix elements. Usually they have more gentle processing, like softer EQ curves for example. There are no set rules though, so use whatever tool works for the job.
