    The reason for having Linear Phase filters for the Sidechain is because Phase = Time, if the filters are not linear phase some frequencies would be delayed and that will affect how the compressor reacts to the audio. That being said Analog sidechains filters have never been linear phase and it doesn't seem to be much of a problem. But 6db/oct filters have much less phase distortion than 48db/oct filters and this could be the reason for going Linear Phase here. I also find 48db/oct on the sidechain quite a strange choose.

    • @andresnol
      @andresnol 5 років тому +6

      i think you are not entirely correct on the time=phase statement. for example: zero latency eq does not create latency yet causes phase distortion on the affected frequency. in fact in a way it is opposite. linear filters need time for processing so actually they cause timing issues which is fixed with delay compensation.

    I think the reason so many plugin companies want to have analog looking UIs is mainly because thats what impresses clients when they come into your studio and see your progress. Even if you don't have expensive hardware, at least they want to feel like you do. I think if you were to do a test showing two masters, one done with purely digital plugins and then one with analog emulation plugins, even if you did a intentionally poorer job with the analog emulation master, the client would prefer it since they can see all the analog gear that that think sounds great rather than a flat utilitarian based UI.

  • @autodidacticprofessor869
    @autodidacticprofessor869 5 років тому +90

    The unit is modeled after actual hardware so it's really not expecting levels like you're feeding it. You need to back off the input gain going into the strip; I turn down as much as 10-15db if it's a "hard hitting" electronic or metal kind of thing. Then the initial behavior of the compressor/limiter isn't so extreme. It was designed to handle levels that would be going from tape masters to vinyl cutters. You can adjust the ratio and "mix" knobs until you get the gain reduction you want. The mix knob isn't the full audio into the plugin, it's just a blend of the input into the compressor and the output, so it can be used to compress very lightly. You can do all your loudness crap after the TG desk. It'll sound better and perform better if you gain stage. Also, each module has an expanded version if you click the upper right hand button. That way you can get more detailed with the EQ and limiter adjustments. My only complaint is that I wish the GUI was a little larger.

    lol great video my guy. I'd you might want to use audio that's not been processed already. That track used already had it's peaks processed (hence why you couldn't get a "dirty" mix). When you activated the compressor. The levels were so loud it was reducing the gain and squashing the mix. They used that compressor to boost (or upwards compress) the volume of smaller peaks. Waves actually has a plugin that prepares the track for mastering for you called "WLM" or you could use IM Pusher's peak "in" peak meter. Also, you could prepare the levels thru the phase module or slide the filter module to the beginning of your mix.

    The VU meter is usually not just there for shits and giggles but it's kind of a great tool. Since they are modeling analog hardware and its distortion characteristics, there is a certain level where the parts start to distort, which is usually when the VU meter hits 0 and above on the -18 setting. Now you saw that your level was pretty high since with the input level set to 0 your compressor was working pretty hard and you heard distortion right when you engaged the input module's filter. So you had a gainstaging problem which you could have identified with the VU meter calibrated to -18 (or whatever else Waves recommends).
    Cheers

    Hello! Nice review of a (imho) nice plugin. Just for the record, the calibration only affects the metering. If you want "more" dirty sound, I guess you just have to increase input gain and reduce output gain. By the way, the metering calibration is pretty straight forward. -18 stands for -18 dBFS (which is the normal audio standard) and can be used to change a bit. For example, I am used to work with -20 dBFS calibration with a -20 dBFS gain staging. Ciao and wish you the best!

    Perhaps one day, a GUI will be available that will let you actually reach into and through the screen, that will allow you to feel and turn knobs or push actual faders, or, even replace the virtual rack screws that you always seem to obsess over. Hell, maybe one day you’ll even be able to touch up those scratches in the paint of the virtual faceplates on the GUI’s, to prevent them from rusting.
    I know that when I’m considering a plug in - no matter how good it sounds - if the virtual rack screws aren’t correct, well, that’s always been a deal-breaker for me.
    🙄🤣😂

    Good point on the visual...I’ve never understood why plugins need to look like analog gear....but on the other side of this it’s makes it’s more fun and you have to use your eyes more....idk

    Hi WSS, thanks for the vid...Isnt all face plating in aluminium...so it would be actually corrosion right hehe ;-) Have you ever tried to chassis punch 3mm steel? But seriously; I would love to hear a raw transient laden track and something like a K-20 with some space in it; so you can really see whats going...would be quite helpful. Not sure about the curve comments...dont you just load a preset when you go back?? Tschuss

    While reading the description you read processing twice, while one was monitoring.
    You should maybe consider giving Waves a little bit more love. Many of their plugins are just great.
    I even like the guis, but that's just my taste.

    • @peterbrandt7911
      @peterbrandt7911 5 років тому

      @@jdl2180 sadly there are quite some people who say bad things about Waves, although most of them were just commenting, so I can't judge, whether they have any clue at all or not.
      Regarding Wytse, he complains the GUI mostly. And even this review isn't really bad soundwise. It's the way he thinks. That's why he rates Waves, Slate and others not as good as they deserve (in my opinion).
      But he's alright :).

    Just thought it was worth mentioning that on any waves plug in you should be gain staging it to -18dbs (in the DAW), apparently they've made all their plug ins add 'analog' distortion and colouring above that level. So the 'headroom' that they give you is basically a colour level. All of the waves compressors sound awful if you run them hot to my ears.
    Not my knowledge, i was told it by my lecturer at university (worked at abbey road as a mix engineer)
    Peace!

    Just one more thing I hope the reference tracks you are using are really not already mastered, so it maybe could make sense to compare an already good mastered one with the one you working at?

    I am finally going to comment on analog-looking plugins because I just had an epiphany ... what if you are using a control surface? They have knobs, buttons, and sliders (like the Softube Console 1 and others) ... or what if you are using a Slate Raven?

      The raven just added another layer of complexity between me and my mix. Not worth it. Maybe in future when tech catches up?
      And controllers are hit and miss . If they could all auto map so that it’s quick maybe? But most of my time got spent teaching controllers the midi functions etc. now if you use softie plugins and a softy be controller then that works fine! Avid for avid and so on….
      Waves doesn’t offer one I don’t think? Neither do any other plugin companies. So if your cool spending time pre programming all the functions and then learning them too… I think shortcuts are my best solution so far . Maybe the fader one due to simplicity?

    I'm late getting to this video; I didn't see it before I purchased that program. Though I own and use many programs you criticize... the value of the negatives you point out, is that it helps me to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of the plugins.
    I have been really ANGRY at Waves due to their WUP thing... but I keep coming back, because no other software exhibits the functional characteristics of Waves plugins. I use other great company's plugins... but Waves is a unique 'thing'. :)
    Stay safe/well man!! :)

    I do have a rebuttal to your understanding of using a "analog looking" plugins.....I deff think part of the enjoyment of use, is the UI & how it "feels", part of the romantism is from the "look". If I use a "modern" style plugin......I dig a more "futuristic" style UI. I, personally love the look of the analog "simulations". Good stuff Brother.

    This chick can really mix a track!!!
    But really...I don't know why Waves gets such a bad name by some of the critics. I've seen some of the biggest professionals on the PLANET use Waves plug ins on huge commercial successes. I used them almost exclusively for a long time as well and made GREAT sounding tracks. Do I use UAD, Fabfilter, Soundtoys Arturia, softtube, Brainworx, black rooster, Valhalla and on and on...YES I've used em ALL. But Waves has some bitchin plugs...their Deesser is still one of the best..works better than fabfilters in my book. Their Renaissance series is the shiz. The Rcomp is epic for vocals...the Eq. Then you have the Waves L2...L3...and their Abbey road stuff like this is bitchin. They really upped their game with this package. LOTS of mojo for your money in my book and I've used em all. Meh....whatever...if it sounds good to you that's all that matters.
